HGTV DStv channel launch press tour - An overview.

Discovery Inc. for the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region worked incredibly hard to make a great impression and to create a splash for the launch of its new HGTV (DStv 177) channel in South Africa on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service.

Discovery Inc. absolutely succeeded.

It did so in the form of a 3-day press tour - even flying some media from the Middle East to Cape Town, South Africa - for what turned out to be the biggest, most comprehensive and elaborate media launch for a single TV channel in South Africa in literally years.

Discovery Inc. and HGTV wanted to make a statement and announce the channel's arrival and it made a statement.

Through it, Discovery Inc. - beyond just launching HGTV and raising media and public awareness around the channel - signalled the importance Discovery Inc. itself attaches to HGTV as a property, as well as the importance and attention it attaches to South Africa as a TV market.

Even if Discovery Inc. only held the utterly astounding cocktail party that it did inside a Clifton mansion as the official HGTV media launch for the channel, it would already have been totally supremo. It's all that Netflix South Africa for instance ever did for its arrival.

Just the HGTV cocktail party alone - although it just served as an introduction - already served to set an excellent tone and create a perfect impression for what HGTV is and the qualities that Discovery Inc. and HGTV embodies. It was beautiful.

It was already more than what happens or is done for several TV channels in South Africa that launch without any fanfare, media event, or attention (take for instance this year Newzroom Afrika with neither the channel nor MultiChoice that bothered to do anything).

Instead, Discovery Inc. stretched HGTV's media launch over 3 days, flew in talent and high-ranking executives from the United States, Dubai and Amsterdam and made a "house party" of it.

Only if you've ever attended a similar type of event for TV in America, would you realise that the HGTV media launch was "American level" and on par and even succeeding in some aspects how American broadcasters and TV studios and channels launch some shows and channels, and do studio series press junkets.

The HGTV media launch in totality was absolutely excellent and the few mistakes and things that I personally didn't really like, far pale in comparison to the overall great and positive impression it made on me and every other journalist I spoke to.

A few thoughts: Discovery Inc. flew media from the Middle East to South Africa. Will South African press ever get access to Discovery's upfront in America or be there when Discovery does things elsewhere in the world?

Somebody who I won't mention said in a short speech "The Home Channel" meaning HGTV. The Home Channel on DStv is actually HGTV's direct competitor and I thought it was odd that people were not briefed beforehand to specifically not try to "say out loud" HGTV as "the home and garden channel" or "the home channel". Luckily it only happened once.

Donovan Goliath as the MC and moderator on Day 2 of the official media launch wasn't bad-bad, but he wasn't good. He didn't prepare, he got names wrong, and his interaction and session with the Flip or Flop star Tarek El Moussa was awkward and borderline cringe-worthy. His questions were bad and pandering, so the content he generated from some people was a waste of time.

Like a magician at the circus Donovan Goliath also called journalists to the stage. It was the 3rd time in 20 years that I've experienced that and it's something that the media loathe. They don't want to be the show or be forced to help create the entertainment.

The press is there to observe and listen, not to be part of an act. When a screen with a typo for instance flashed, Donovan Goliath said "Turnbill" instead of Turnbull. Did he not go over and wasn't he briefed beforehand who he would be introducing and talking to or studied their names even a little?

The events organising company Show Works was absolutely astounding in the creativity, conceptualisation and execution of basically everything as far as look and spacing and interaction were concerned.

Everything looked incredible and had that Disney-level "wow"-factor ("O, look at that! O look at that!"). I noticed the incredible attention to detail in many, many things and the overall setup.

The most impressive single thing for me over the 3 days was the stage lighting at the Waterfront Studios on Day 2. Utter perfection in scene and atmosphere creation.

Personally, I least liked the wine blending exercise in the extremely cold, damp cellar of Grand Provence. It was difficult to enjoy due to the uncomfortable cold. It was very difficult to hear anything and it felt like sitting at a bus stop when it rains and you look every 5 minutes to see if you don't see the glimmer of a bus.

Doing this in the middle of winter in a wine cellar in extremely cold, didn't really fit.

There was oddly no HGTV channel schedule (it took days to get one emailed), nor a hard copy or USB with publicity material like photos and programming and show synopses on it for the media.

Even some screeners on disk or digital screeners of HGTV shows would have worked well, considering that the media launch stretched over 3 days and journalists would have had time to watch things in their own time.

The Discovery Inc. executives were all absolutely amazing. They were personable, approachable and took time to talk to the media and journalists when no red recording lights were flashing on cameras and phones.

Yet they were also very forthcoming, expressive and detailed during official interviews - and actually sat with media during lunches and dinners. They were very open, wonderful conversationalists and made genuine effort to get to know and to connect with the press.

Something that wasn't done so well was the period leading up to Day 2's afternoon HGTV press conference that felt disorganised, tiring, confusing and frustrating.

I was told to wait in a particular room and obediently did so. Then suddenly we were told to leave because "it's for corporate", only to go outside and wait in another area. Then I was instructed to go back, again to leave, and then sternly summoned to go back "immediately" - to the very original room where we were seated and waited originally. Confusing.

"Just please tell me where you want me to be because I've been there twice and here twice and this person tells me to go there, and someone else tells me to go there?" I asked.

After waiting and just before interviewing TV talent Tarek El Moussa it was weird being told, "please no personal questions".

Firstly, journalists won't ask personal questions anyway - unless tabloid press were invited, and secondly, maybe people should make that clear not in the seconds before an interview when journalists already had taken time to prepare, research and write down questions and might not have other questions if they're suddenly told they can't ask certain things.

The Day 2 HGTV rooftop gala dinner at the Zeitz Museum was incredibly beautiful and wonderful and showed off the splendour of Cape Town at night.

It was also hugely appreciated that Discovery Inc. during the 3-day media launch actually showed the media the programming in terms of sizzle reels and edited episodes of shows as part of a screening session.

It's television - and HGTV showed its product and wonderfully so - which is something that a lot of TV channels doing launches forget or don't keep in mind.

The amount of effort, energy, money, intent, preparation, arrangements and logistics that Discovery Inc. and the South African PR and event teams working with Discovery put into the HGTV media launch was self-evident, enormous and astounding because it was a big machine with surely a lot of different, constantly moving parts.

I miss when Discovery Networks used to do annual upfront events in Johannesburg, South Africa for the press and advertisers about the upcoming programming on its various channels and gave a longer overview of what's coming.

Only BBC Studios Africa and M-Net have filled the void somewhat when it comes to upfront presentations but Discovery used to rule the roost with how they did it, the content Discovery spoke about and how far in advance Discovery would highlight programming across its channels portfolio.

The HGTV media launch was just so exceptionally excellent that I instinctively had thoughts several times during the 3 days thinking back to when Discovery's upfront was far and away "the best in town". HGTV's unrivalled launch was exactly back to that level and more (and so well done), again.

It was hard work but also hugely gratifying to get to cover HGTV's media launch and press tour as a journalist and TV critic.

It was wonderful to see and experience it all and to be immersed in it, and to be able to report on it - whether for viewers who care about every small detail, or for people working within the TV industry who want to know all they can about it.

HGTV DStv channel launch Day 3: IN IMAGES - 8 photos of the Grand Provence media lunch.

Day 3 of Discovery Inc.'s 3-day press tour for the media launch of its HGTV channel in South Africa concluded with lunch at the Grand Provence wine estate in Franschhoek.

The international Discovery Inc. executives who flew to South Africa from different countries, mingled and sat among journalists and editors enjoying the wine-paired three-course lunch that was a highly enjoyable experience.

Everybody talked about ... television of course.

On Day 3 of Discovery Inc.'s 3-day press tour for the media launch of its HGTV channel in South Africa, the day kicked off with a light breakfast and coffee and the Grand Provence wine estate in Franschhoek, followed by a press screening of the content on the channel that included a special video message, a cellar tour and wine blending experience, followed by a gourmet wine-paired lunch.

MultiChoice has added Discovery Inc.'s latest TV channel, HGTV (DStv 177) to its DStv satellite pay-TV service in South Africa for DStv Premium, DStv Compact Plus and DStv Compact subscribers.

On Day 3 the invited media and Discovery Inc. executives all went with shuttles to the luxurious Grand Provence wine estate nestled within the vines of the Franschhoek Valley, about an hour's drive from Cape Town.

The cold and wet winter weather was perfect for a warm cosy indoor day ... watching television!

At the wine estate, Discovery Inc. with the help of the Cape Town-based events solution company Show Works, welcomed media with coffee-to-order and a barista behind the coffee machine alongside a delectable array of breakfast pastries and fruit in the art gallery.

Then media were ushered into the screening room with a choice of luxury popcorn (and various toppings like chocolate).

Tatiana Lagewaard (vice president of lifestyle and pay-TV production for the EMEA region), did the screening presentation and introduced several of the new shows that are part of HGTV's programming schedule to the media and played several sizzle reels.

The first sizzle reel was a promo for HGTV's Flip or Flop, Flip or Flop Nashville, Good Bones, Home Town, and House Hunters, followed by a show reel for My Lottery Dream Home.

After that Tatiana Lagewaard told the media more about the show Good Bones, and then showed an edited episode of about 20-minutes to give the press an indication of how the show looks.

The HGTV screening day was then capped off with a 20-minute edited version of an episode of Home Town that was screened.

At the end Discovery Inc. had a lovely surprise in the form of a specially-recorded video message from the stars of Home Town, Erin and Ben Napier, talking about HGTV being launched in South Africa. "HGTV is coming to South Africa guys! This is so exciting!" said Erin.

After the screening, the media went to the Grand Provence cellar for a wine blending exercise with everybody who went home with their own bottle of wine, followed by lunch.

On the evening of Day 2 of Discovery Inc.'s 3-day press tour for the media launch of its HGTV (DStv 177) channel in South Africa, the press went on a guided tour of the Zeitz Museum in Cape Town, followed by a beautiful gala dinner on the 6th floor rooftop.

HGTV has been added on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service in South Africa for DStv Premium, DStv Compact Plus and DStv Compact subscribers.

On Day 2's evening the invited media were requested to dress formally and taken by shuttles from the Table Bay Hotel to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa for a guided tour.

The Zeitz MOCAA is the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world and houses an impressive collection of work from all over the African continent and beyond.

Housed in an important historical landmark, the old grain silo at the V&A Waterfront, the museum  has an interior as outstanding as the exterior and the art inside.

The HGTV gala dinner took place on the 6th floor rooftop, with spectacular views across Cape Town's central business district.

Before dinner and after everyone was seated, Discovery Inc. played the beautiful, rush-edit video with music below, of all of the activities of Day 2's HGTV media launch:

HGTV DStv channel launch Day 2: INTERVIEW - Flip or Flop star Tarek El Moussa: 'I feel like I have a very intimate relationship with HGTV because I feel like I've grown with them'.

The Flip or Flop star Tarek El Moussa who flew from the United States to South Africa for the launch of Discovery Inc.'s HGTV (DStv 177) channel on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service told TVwithThinus that he feels that he has a very close relationship with HGTV as he's grown with the channel over the past 7 years and 8 seasons of his show.

I had the chance to sit down with the star of Flip or Flop, and who is working on a new spin-off show, Flipping 101, at the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town on the afternoon of Day 2 of Discovery Inc.'s 3-day press tour for the HGTV channel's launch in South Africa.

What are some of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to renovating homes as assets to then sell for hopefully a profit - what is calling "flipping"?
Tarek: There are so many mistakes and I always tell people, the most important thing you have to do is be educated.

It's a big deal. You're talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars and if you don't have the right education, it can be very risky and you can lose a lot of money. And the biggest mistake I see is that people will buy a house just because it's a piece of junk, thinking they can make a profit.

But just because a house is a piece of junk doesn't make it a good flip because you have to get it for the right price.

For people who want to start out - because "flipping" is not really yet that big here in South Africa, but the trend is starting and growing, what would be your advice?
Tarek: You know, when I started I had no capital, I raised other people's money but I was able to raise other people's money by doing extensive research and writing business plans.

So my suggestion for everybody who wants to get into it is to read as many books as you can and use the internet and learn about house flipping. There's so much valuable knowledge out there that you can teach yourself.

In terms of house design and trends, what are some of the latest changes and trends when it comes to home renovation that you've noticed?
Tarek: Marble has been really, really popular over the last few years and I'm starting to see that dwindle off and starting to replace that is we're starting to see cement tiles, a lot of bold patterns. I'm starting to see a lot of black-and-white tiles, and actually really becoming very popular now is black-and-white pattern tiles.

Overall, design-wise I'm seeing a lot of simple designs with really bold accent pieces, so you'll have a simple-looking kitchen countertop, simple cabinets, with a really defined backsplash that pops and it looks it looks like artwork.

What are your thoughts and impressions of South Africa and Cape Town so far?
Tarek: It's different than I thought. It's absolutely stunning.

At the HGTV cocktail party at the house overlooking the ocean, it was the most spectacular house I've ever seen. So I must say that the real estate and the architecture here is phenomenal.

With Flip or Flop and since you joined HGTV, what has that journey been like for you, and what do you think contributes to the success of HGTV as a TV channel?
Tarek: You know, HGTV has grown so much. I first aired season one of Flip or Flop in 2013, and I feel like I have a very intimate relationship with HGTV because I feel like I've grown with them.

HGTV as a channel has become so big over the last few years and my show Flip or Flop has risen with them. So, I feel like we're a team and I just love the network. They've just been really amazing and been really good.

Then, finally, you're good at or have become good at "flipping" properties but I think you started out as, or still are a real estate agent? In terms of bringing that expertise and background knowledge to HGTV is there other types of shows that you would like to do or consider or do you see "flipping" as your domain?
Tarek: Oh, there are so many different shows!

I would be open to do anything - design shows, challenge shows, competition shows, talk shows. You know, I've been through a lot in my life, outside of real estate, so anything entertainment-world related I'm interested in.

HGTV DStv channel launch Day 2: Executives press conference - HGTV's surprising answer on design trend-spotting and staying ahead of the curve with what viewers want to see next.

Who knew that tiny homes would become a thing? HGTV.

By perpetually being on the cutting edge of the latest trends in television programming, spotting them, adjusting, and incorporating them, America's home and garden channel has itself bucked the trend in a pay-TV world marked by sliding viewership and so-called "cord-cutting".

With its finger constantly on the pulse of what viewers want to see and rolling out content about whatever is next while at the same time staying true to tried-and-tested home design and renovation content, Discovery Inc.'s HGTV (DStv 177) has kept growing and adding viewers (or "fans" as HGTV calls them).

HGTV has continued its viewership expansion to become the third most-watched channel in all of pay-TV in the United States.

MultiChoice just added Discovery Inc.'s HGTV (DStv 177) for DStv Premium, DStv Compact Plus and DStv Compact subscribers and for that Discovery Inc. held a HGTV press conference at the Table Bay hotel in Cape Town.

Kathleen Finch, Discovery Inc.'s chief lifestyle brands officer, was one of the TV executive panellists on the afternoon of Day 2 of the 3-day press tour for the channel's launch in South Africa.

TVwithThinus asked her how HGTV as an aspirational TV channel determines what the trends are and will be, for instance the "tiny house" movement for which HGTV just "suddenly" had shows ready, and how HGTV executives trend-analyse before being able to programme according to that.

"Well, we don't do it before we programme," explained Kathleen Finch in her surprising answer.

"What we really like to do is - because we make 800 hours of new content a year, we cover everything - so, we do modern programming, we do country chic, we do farmhouse chic. We do all these different styles. Big homes, little homes, mega-mansions, tiny homes."

"We have so much content and every talent that we bring, bring their expertise. So we don't just want to hire designers who will have the 'HGTV look' because there is no 'HGTV look'. It's personal. And it's a real reflection of the different talent that we have and we try to personalise it so that the viewers can take an idea from here, a trend from there," said Kathleen Finch.

"We don't dictate, we don't want to dictate, because it's a personal decision. Instead, we want to make sure that we have people who are at the top of their field who talk about trends, who reflect trends, but they empower viewers to do what they want and to make their own decisions."

"I think trying to spot trends is sort of a dangerous business because it's a trend today and it's gone tomorrow."

"Instead, what our goal at HGTV really is, is to inspire and to encourage viewers to find their style and to take from our channel and our experts what they can do to translate their style to their own home - as opposed to going 'okay, from now on every appliance is stainless steel, that's the new thing'. We don't do that."

"We let you decide by sharing a little bit of everything," said Kathleen Finch.

HGTV DStv channel launch Day 2: Press conference - Why Discovery Inc. launched it so quickly in South Africa after acquiring Scripps and Africa's growing importance as a pay-TV market among global content suppliers.

In a global pay-TV market that often moves with tectonic speed, TVwithThinus asked Discovery Inc. how it was possible and why it decided to roll out HGTV internationally and in South Africa so quickly after buying Scripps, and asked MultiChoice whether adding international channels quicker from global content suppliers signifies a growing importance on the South African and African region as a pay-TV market.

MultiChoice just added Discovery Inc.'s HGTV (DStv 177) with the TV channel's addition that comes literally weeks after being made available in Germany; and HGTV having launched in Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and a few other Southeast Asia countries just a few months ago.

HGTV will soon be launching in the United Kingdom, with South Africa that got it before Britain.

Discovery Inc.'s held a HGTV press conference at the Table Bay hotel in Cape Town on the afternoon of Day 2 of the 3-day press tour for the channel's launch in South Africa, and TVwithThinus asked Discovery Inc. about the strategy behind HGTV's relative quick roll-out and expansion globally and why it's being done, and MultiChoice about how South Africa and Africa is now being perceived as a pay-TV region.

Amanda Turnbull, vice president and general manager at Discovery Inc. for the Africa and Middle East region, was one of the TV executive panellists at the HGTV press conference.

"In terms of the internationalisation, when Discovery Inc. and Scripps came together, there were some fantastic 'complementalities' if that's even a word," explained Amanda Turnbull.

"What Kathleen Finch (now Discovery Inc.'s chief lifestyle brands officer) and her team brought to us in the United States was absolute dominance of women in pay-TV every night of the week. Don't forget that we're a big global company, so what happens in America is important."

"So what the Scripps deal brought to us was huge scale and ownership of ratings in the evenings in key demographics. What it did for us internationally was that the Scripps team hadn't been at that point been as active as we had been internationalising."

"We do pride ourselves on being first and fastest since we've been internationalising the Discovery brands for the last 30 years. What that meant was there were huge opportunities because we are operating in 220 countries, so we have teams in the majority of places who know the market and know what's expected."

"So the idea is for us to internationalise the legacy Scripps TV channels as quickly as possible because we're on the ground and we can do that and we have the relationship. So that's what you're seeing now," said Amanda Turnbull.

"Even though it feels quick to you, it doesn't necessarily feel so quick to us but that's why I'm so proud. We have a very strong relationship with MultiChoice - it goes back to 1995, in 1997 we launched Discovery Channel in this market."

"Lee Hobbs (Discovery Inc.'s senior vice president for pay-TV and global brands for the EMEA region) and I have been working with Aletta Alberts (MultiChoice's head of content strategy) since 2007, so we go back a long way."

"And a lot of my fellow country managers across EMEA are really having helpful and useful conversations with their distributors around these fantastic brands, so it rounds out our portfolio really nicely in that real-life space."

"It adds more value to a distributor because there are these verticals that we can really serve now even more passionately. And you know, we didn't have food (Food Network) before, we didn't have HGTV before, we didn't have Travel before but it does complement what we had beautifully now."

"When you're in this real-life space this idea that you can be credible, authentic, expert in these verticals is really important. So it was a brilliant buy for us. To be honest, we learnt. When we acquired Eurosport we learnt what happens, when you acquire you have to be quick because we're publicly traded so there is an aspiration and there is an expectation from Wall Street."

"So we wanted to do it quickly and we wanted to move the brands forward," said Amanda Turnbull.

Aletta Alberts, MultiChoice's head of content strategy, said "for most international suppliers Africa is a very, very important territory because we are still one of the few territories where you see the growth in pay-TV that we see".

"Although you read in the newspapers that DStv Premium is declining it's actually not declining to the rate that we thought. And nowhere in the world does a pay-TV operator grow by almost a million subscribers every year, and we're still doing those numbers."

"Even if we don't do a million and we do 800 000 it's still more than other global territories and it's not going to change overnight. Yes, the over-the-top (OTT) competitors are out there, but it's all additive. It's not this-or-that."

"As long as broadband is expensive and not everywhere, we've got a good five to 10 years before you'll see that real fast change happening in other territories."

"We see on average five TV channels a week; people who pitch to us international channels that people are making. I mean, it's difficult for me to say but you can ask my colleagues, I'll just tell you what suppliers tell us. They say South Africans are incredibly spoilt. We probably have the best of the best that is out there."

"There are maybe one or two things that we don't have but there isn't a lot out there. HGTV was one of them and there's maybe one or two others - because then you start running into repeats," explained Aletta Alberts.
