Ewan Strydom returns to SABC3’s Expresso after 3 years: ‘I missed that rush of live TV’.

After exiting SABC3 in April 2019 to appear on kykNET for the past three years, Ewan Strydom is back at Expresso as a TV presenter saying that he missed the rush of live TV.

Ewan Strydom who lives in Blouberg and turns 40 on 8 March, will now appear simultaneously on two TV channels - in the mornings on SABC3's breakfast show produced by Cardova Productions in Tokai, Cape Town; as well as on Sunday evenings on Bravo! on kykNET (DStv 144), which is produced by Homebrew Films in Montague Gardens.

Ewan Strydom made his surprise Expresso return on Wednesday 8 February last week. It happened without any fanfare and no press release like when the disgraced relationship cheater Katlego Maboe unexpectedly returned to Expresso in August 2022 after two years with a sit-down on-camera interview.

kykNET confirms to TVwithThinus that Ewan Strydom remains part of the presenter team of the Sunday night Afrikaans celebrity profile magazine show Bravo!, the series he left Expresso for three years ago. 

Last year, Ewan Strydom who is married to Adrienn (38) and has two sons Kèan (9) and Dominic (6), was also the presenter of the first season of the Afrikaans reality competition show Plaasjapie on kykNET.

Ewan Strydom tells TVwithThinus that "the best way to describe being back is 'refreshing'. I have missed my feel-good family tremendously, and that rush of live TV."

"After nearly 3 years, a lot has changed. I grew in so many ways, yet returning to Expresso, I feel familiarity….and I'm excited. Stepping back onto the Expresso studio floor brings back so many feel-good memories, and I'm looking forward to making a lot more."

Patience Stevens, producer, says "We are delighted to welcome back Ewan Strydom as a regular presenter on Expresso on S3. Viewer response has been very positive – with the comments being that it is as if Ewan had never left, and how seamless and natural it is to have him back on the show again."

kykNET's new 2020 reality show, Plaasjapie, looking for 20 contestants to go live in a barn and work on a farm with Ewan Strydom as presenter.

kykNET (DStv 144) is staying at the farm for the Afrikaans pay-TV channel's next reality venture in 2020, Plaasjapie, in which 20 city slickers from across South Africa will have to work on a farm and live in a barn as they're whittled down to find a winner.

Cloistered on a farm somewhere in the Western Cape, Infinity Films is now looking for 20 complete city slickers who are willing to go and get up with the roosters, work, compete and do without any of the luxuries of city living for a month in the channel's new reality show.

Somewhat similar to E!'s Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive reality show of 2005 and following on from the success of Boer Soek 'n Vrou on kykNET in which love-seekers go to try and find a "connection" with lonely South African farmers, Plaasjapie will parachute 20 contestants from across South Africa to a working farm to test their endurance and skill to survive the rural farm life.

The Bravo! presenter Ewan Strydom - now complete with a 5'o clock shadow on his jawline - will be the Plaasjapie presenter with the 20 contestants who will live together in a barn and get whittled down episode by episode as the majority decides, Survivor-style, who has to leave.

The requirement is that a contestant must have no farm, farming, or farmer experience and be willing to live in a barn for a month. According to the producers contestants will have to "survive the basic elements on a farm - meaning none of the luxuries found on modern-day farms".

"Those who can outwit their teammates in the challenges will get the chance to win some luxuries for themselves, but the rest will have to feel how it was to live on a farm from years ago," says the show.

"Plaasjapie isn't just about survival and physical labour on a farm. It's about strategy, determination and being smarter than the other contestants, as well as making plans because that's what farmers do."

Some of the challenges will be group challenges, while some will be individual challenges. "Figure out who are your real friends and who are wolves in sheep's clothing," says kykNET.

Ewan Strydom joins kykNET's weekly Bravo! magazine show as a new presenter.

Ewan Strydom has joined the weekly Afrikaans entertainment magazine show, Bravo! on kykNET (DStv 144) as a new field presenter with his first insert that will be broadcast on Sunday 26 May.

Ewan Strydom left SABC3's morning show, Expresso, on 30 April this year where he was one of the co-presenters since the show, produced by Cardova Productions, launched in October 2010.

No reason was provided by Expresso or SABC3 for Ewan Strydom's exit but it's now clear that it was because he left to join a broadcast competitor of the SABC.

Ewan Strydom is returning to Homebrew Films and the M-Net stable with Homebrew Films that used to produce the original version of the magazine entertainment show, All Access, for M-Net (DStv 101) where Ewan Strydom was one of the original presenters.

"So exited to announce that as of 26 May I am joining the Bravo! team on kykNET," he announced on social media. "Looking forward to yet another unforgettable journey with you".

Ewan Strydom will now switch from English TV presenting to Afrikaans.

A flood of tears as Ewan Strydom leaves SABC3's Expresso after 8 years in highly-emotional farewell and co-hosts say: 'You've been the best part of our mornings'.

Tears unashamedly streamed down his face on Tuesday morning as Ewan Strydom bid goodbye as a TV presenter of SABC3's morning show Expresso 8 and a half years after he joined the Cape Town based lifestyle show, as his co-hosts shared moving messages in a highly-emotional on-air farewell.

Tuesday was announced as his last day on air with Ewan Strydom who teared up when his co-presenters shared final goodbye messages during this morning's broadcast, along with a tribute lookback including clips that were played.

The various goodbye on-air messages on Tuesday on SABC3's Expresso made for extremely compelling and moving morning television.

The energetic and friendly Ewan Strydom is one of the remaining original presenters together with Katlego Maboe and Leigh-Anne Williams who are both still with the show, when it made its debut, done from The Equinox Building in Sea Point since 4 October 2010 as a new live breakfast show on SABC3.

Before joining Expresso, Ewan Strydom was part of M-Net's All Access weekly magazine show produced from Cape Town before it got cancelled.

During his time with the programme he also became a dad of two.

No reason for Ewan Strydom's departure from Expresso was given on Tuesday but Cardova responsible for the show issued a statement through SABC3 to TVwithThinus later in response to a media enquiry, saying "Expresso bids farewell to Ewan Strydom and wishes him all the best with his future ventures".

"After almost 9 years on the Safta award-winning Expresso, Ewan Strydom is leaving the programme to pursue other business ventures."

The show said "Ewan was one of the first of a line of presenters who have been crafted into quality live and field reporters on the popular breakfast programme, including those who won their places on the show through the rigorous audition process of Presenter Search on 3, which introduced the likes of Zoe Brown, Thabiso Makhubela and Mosa Kaiser to Expresso viewers".

"Cardova Productions and the Expresso morning show recognise the hard work Ewan has invested in helping the show grow to where it is today, and appreciate the positive feel-good attitude that Ewan has always displayed, on and off camera. We wish him all the best with his future endeavours".

"I don't know how we're going to do Expresso without you. I feel Expresso is you. But you have been the best part of our mornings," said Leigh-Anne Williams who described Tuesday as "a bitter-sweet day".

"You are one of the most incredible people we will ever know in this lifetime. You are as real off-screen as you are on-screen," said Leigh-Anne Williams.

Katlego Maboe mentioned how he was "On this journey with you since day one when this studio was nothing but rubble and cement bags and kruiwaens".

"In such a massive way over the years you have been my support in so many of the life challenges that I've gone through." Katlego Maboe said "there's no way that I could ever have done this without you. Thank you for your friendship. From my heart, thank you."

Graeme Richards said "I can't tell you how much you mean to me; how much you mean to everyone here. Everyone is a little bit broken because you are just honestly one of the most authentic, genuine guys." He said "this bond, and this connection - nothing will ever affect that".

"You guys are family man, you guys are my family," said Ewan Strydom.

As Tuesday's end credits rolled and his voice wavering, Ewan Strydom said "It's incredibly difficult to say goodbye. I will miss you all dearly. You are my family. You've become my world. I don't know how to do this. I'm not a crier. But it's been a journey that I will never forget."

"It's been an incredible past couple of years. I treasure so much you guys who became the closest people in my life. And the thought of having to say goodbye and not spending the mornings with you is heartbreaking for me. It really is."

"To you at home as well, thank you for allowing me into your homes every single morning."

TV dreams in Durban: From dawn to dusk hopefuls queue at the Durban auditions of SABC3's Presenter Search on 3, luring dancers, DJ's, doctors and even a rugby player moonlighting as a male stripper.

Zola Myeza who woke up when it was dark and queued for hours for her chance to do an audition for the SABC3's Presenter Search on 3 when the show came to Durban, says programmes like this visiting places smaller places and cities outside of Johannesburg scouting for new TV talent, gives people hope that "even when you're home, you can go ahead and conquer your dreams".

She was one of thousands who queued patiently when the show visited Durban, the episode that will be broadcast this evening on SABC3 at 19:30.

Viewers already saw how thousands of people from across South Africa flocked to the nationwide Presenter Search on 3 auditions, that kicked off in Port Elizabeth, and then moved to Cape Town.

Over two days at the Durban Exhibition Centre, people queued from very early for the chance to be seen by the regional judges like the Top Billing presenters Ayanda Thabethe and Maps Maponyane, Expresso presenter Ewan Strydom, Lotus FM's Shirdika Pillai, Afternoon Express' Danilo Acquisto and the Mela presenter and doctor Tevin Naidu.

Ntombfuthi Ngema (35) from Umlazi who woke up at midnight and arrived at 04:30 to be the first in the queue at the Durban auditions, told TVwithThinus that said she wanted to enter because "this is me. This is what I was born to do. I know I can do this because I'm the best person for this."

She said she sees herself on Top Billing. "I mean, I can do the movies. Maybe I can be a producer or a talk show host".

Londeka Sishi (21) originally from Port Shepstone but living in Durban, said "I've always been very passionate about people and speaking from a very young age. I've had a lot of hurdles that have prevented me from pursuing my dreams which is media and entertainment. And now I think I've finally got myself in a position where I'm able to pursue it."

She said she didn't sleep the night before. "I'm also a singer, so writing comes naturally to me. In preparation I watched a lot of auditions; a lot of people presenting on TV; and I watched a lot of SABC3. And then what I did was write something that I felt was close to the show that I was auditioning for and I did a couple of takes for my family to give me some feedback and tell me what they thought."

Speaking after her audition, Palesa Tembe (27) from Umlazi, D-section said she decided to come and try out for the chance to become a SABC3 presenter because "I have a background in dancing and acting, but TV presenting has truly been at the core and always been something I've been attracted to. So when I saw this opportunity, I thought who am I not to take it".

She woke up at 5:00 in the morning. In preparing she said "I know that SABC3 has a very beautiful relationship with humour. Everybody is funny and personable, so I just tried to remind myself that whatever I put in my link, needs to truly resonate with the fun-loving atmosphere that SABC3 always puts through to viewers."

"The judges are really cool, really personable, and I really felt a connection with them. So it was a lot more intimidating that what I thought it would be, but they made it so comfortable and truly encouraging."

Zola Myeza (25) from Mount Edgecombe who already appeared in Uzalo on SABC1, said she decided to enter because "it's what I'm passionate about".

"I'm already a radio presenter and in growing my brand this has always been a dream and part of my journey of growth". She described her audition before the judges as "nerve-wracking. You can't ever deny it - especially with some of your role models in front of you being the judges".

"But it's also extremely inspiring because you're pushing yourself to the limit and you're pushing yourself to the edge. So it was a test for me to see - and just a moment for me to believe in myself, and see me conquering my dream, so I'm just making the most of the opportunity that SABC3 has given me".

Asked what it means for Durban for TV productions like Uzalo to film on location in the city and KwaZulu-Natal and for Presenter Search on 3 to go to Durban to do auditions she said "not a lot of opportunities in the past have been afforded within the city, and just because everything always happens in the City of Gold, as a Durbanite you always dream of 'When I'm done with school I just want to go to Johannesburg to fulfill my dreams".

"A show like Uzalo gives the platform to fulfill your dreams. Even when you're home you can go ahead and conquer your dreams. And it also made people realise that there's a gap in the market. Why can't Durban be the goldmine of dreams? Opportunities can be created here. And stars can be born in Durban. It gives Durbanites that hope that, you know what, you can fulfill your dreams still being at home."

Mishka Gounden from Hillcrest said she decided to enter because her heart told her to do it. She woke up at 04:30 and described her audition as "daunting".

"It's very nerve-wracking, but it's good positive nerves. You do make a few blunders here and there with the lights and the attention and all of the cameras pointing straight at you."

"The pressure is on you, but I have to admit I wasn't nervous at all until I got to the last part of the competition when all of the attention is focused on you. For me personally, I'm very good at improvising, but when you're told on the spot to improvise, under that much pressure, it's very difficult."

The rugby player Ntandoyenkosi Zuma (18) from Durban who woke up at 6:00, surprised the judges by doing an impromptu strip routine and said the judges responded well to it. He said he was "happy about my performance".

He recently started a male entertainer group with some friends. "In December it's very busy when it comes to events, so we thought we can push something new with the stripping thing."

As a flanker he plays rugby for Varsity College (VCRFC) and said "I love rugby and I'm there to steal the ball every time and I enjoy it; an aggressive part to it, but it's a gentleman's sport. I love it, I really love it."

Expresso presenter Ewan Strydom a dad again of second son Dominic; 'we were instantly smitten and can't wait to take him home with us'.

Expresso breakfast show presenter Ewan Strydom became a dad again this morning for the second time with the birth of his son Dominic in Cape Town.

Ewan Strydom and wife Adrienn who already have a 2-year old son Kean, welcomed their second child, a boy, this morning at 7:50 at the Panorama Mediclinic hospital through caesarean.

"We are absolutely ecstatic!" says Ewan Strydom. "As soon as baby Dominic made his appearance, we experienced first-hand how elastic love can be. We were instantly smitten and can't wait to take him home with us so we can all spend quality time together as a family".

Newborn Dominic weighed in at 2,87kg at birth and 47cm. Ewan Strydom was by his wife's side in the delivery room and says his wife and Dominic are "doing well" and enjoying their first few hours bonding with their new son.

"He is safe and sound in this world and he is gorgeous. We can't keep our eyes off him and we are thrilled that he is finally here with us."

"The deliver process was so effortless. The staff and doctors at Panorama Mediclinic were absolutely incredible and so professional. We are truly lucky and blessed that baby and Adrienn are both in good health".

Ewan Strydom however might have to return to the hospital soon. Who knows?

He is currently training for an upcoming celebrity boxing match in aid of charity to be held in Cape Town on 4 July. Ewan Strydom will be facing off against TV hunk Janez Vermeiren.

Expresso celebrates its 1 000th episode as SABC3's weekday morning breakfast show.

Expresso, SABC3's weekday breakfast show, is celebrating its 1000th episode this morning since it started on 4 October 2010.

Presenters Katlegoe Maboe and Ewan Strydom are still part of the on-air talent team and have been since the beginning.

"We've had 1 000 feel-good mornings," says Ewan Strydom. "Expresso was a complete blessing in disguise for me and for my family. I am very proud of the team who has worked so hard to bring these feel-good mornings to South Africa".

"Expresso has become a special home to me and we've become part of people's families," says Katlego Maboe.

"It's quite something to know that we are part of a team that did groundbreaking work reintroducing lifestyle entertainment to the morning. It's fantastic to bring this show to people every day and to do it with such a diverse team is an honour".

Uh-oh! The Asian stir fry had a lot of beef on display when the Expresso presenters Graeme Richards and Ewan Strydom went shirtless this morning on the SABC3 weekday breakfast show.

Viewers got an unexpected eye full of a shirtless Graeme Richards and Ewan Strydom with Loyiso Bala (who kept his shirt on but referred to himself as "The Naked Chef") during a cooking segment at the tail end of today's show.

The Expresso shirtlessness follows Janez Vermeiren and Jeannie D of Top Billing on SABC3 who went shirtless last month in the marketing campaign awaiting the reveal on 12 April of the new Springbok jersey.

But now the Expresso did just that and now look as if they've stepped right out of Hamptons; ready for Summer 2013.

The new Expresso publicity pics and photo shoot are for summer - and if that sounds matter-of-factly, Expresso is the only morning show in South Africa which regularly actually takes publicity photos and updates them as the different seasons roll by.

I've said it many times before and I'll say it again: unlike some of the other trash purporting to cover television TV with Thinus won't cover the personal lives of people on or working in television unless it starts to impact their on-screen work.

He was at work today, which means he manages his private life quite well away from the cameras, but congratulations are in order for Ewan Strydom, the Expresso presenter on SABC3 who became a first-time dad yesterday.

This morning on the weekday morning breakfast show Ewan Strydom shared with viewers this picture of the new dad and his son, Kian. Ewan Strydom (who was/is a model) met his wife Adrienn - now a mom - on a modelling shoot in Thailand.

Baby Kian was born Monday morning at 02:00 and weighed in at 3,81kg. "Nothing can prepare you for the moment when you meet your son," said Ewan Strydom.

The Expresso team said: "We congratulate Ewan and mom Adrienn on the new addition to the Strydom family and to our family too."

At least dad is already used to very early mornings.

They're bubbly, beautiful, totally telegenic and naturally expressive: Liezel van der Westhuizen, Ewan Strydom, Michael Mol and Kia Johnson who are the presenters of the brand-new morning breakfast show Expresso. Expresso kicks off today, Monday October 4 at 05:30 to 07:30 on SABC3 and only I have the first on-set photos of the Expresso presenters.

I was the first TV writer to get access to the Sea Point chic set yesterday, a mere day before today's Expresso launch broadcast. Construction on the Expresso set is currently about halfway done on the 7th floor penthouse of The Equinox Building in Cape Town. Its from here that Tswelopele Productions will be doing the lifestyle orientated Expresso for SABC3 on weekdays, starting today.

Katlego Maboyi wasn't there yesterday when I visited the set, but an infectious exuberance and excitement among the presenters and crew of Tswelopele Productions were palpable in the afternoon Cape Town sun where they all lounged around on the roof of the building. The friendly and longtime Tswelopele Productions producer Bradley van den Berg was on hand keeping an eye on things. I also ran into the always pleasant uber producer Patience Stevens who's also the managing director of Tswelopele Productions. As always Patience Stevens is very hands-on with all her TV shows and  Expresso will clearly be no exception.

Chris van Niekerk from The Fold Architecture in Cape Town who's responsible for the look and design of the sleek, multi-use and high end Expresso set graciously gave me a tour of the penthouse area. Here the presenters would be able to move seamlessly from the lounge to the gleaming kitchen, to a roof terrace, a gym (not completed yet) and a performance area.

Idols' Liezel van der Westhuizen, All Access' Ewan Strydom and 50/50's Katlego Maboyi promote SABC3's new Expresso morning show.

Just one day after her abrupt sudden last appearance on M-Net's Idols on Sunday night, Liezel van der Westhuizen is simply burning up promo time with a brand-new, heavily flighted on-air promo that started today on SABC3. In the promo for SABC3's new morning show Expresso, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Ewan Strydom from M-Net's All Access and Katlego Maboyi from SABC2's 50/50 are telling viewers about the exciting new morning breakfast show Expresso starting Monday, October 4 on SABC3 between 05:30 and 07:30.

Liezel van der Westhuizen, Ewan Strydom and Katlego Maboyi who've decided to leave M-Net and SABC2 to join the new Tswelopele Production made for SABC3, all speak seamless Afrikaans and English. It could be an indication of another first-ever coming to South African television: fully bilingual TV presenters who are absolutely comfortable in Afrikaans and English and who will also be allowed - and were actually sought out - to speak both.

''What is the first thing you do in the morning? Do you hit the snooze button?'' enthuses Liezel van der Westhuizen, before 50/50's Katlego Maboyi seamlessly continues: ''Soon it will be your remote button you press for your morning caffeine fix.'' All Access' Ewan Strydom continues (in Afrikaans) and touts what viewers will see on Expresso: ''SABC3's new morning show gives you celebs, décor, food, health and entertainment.''

Expresso will include inserts and information on sport, staying fit and following a healthy diet. Viewers who look closely, will even see Ewan Strydom lift Katlego Maboyi up in the air, doing a mock ''human dumb-bell press''. Ewan Strydom will be Expresso's new fitness expert.

I can be first to break the news that SABC3's brand-new morning breakfast show will be called Expresso.

Expresso is the current ''to go'' name that SABC3 will likely be going with for the new Tswelopele Productions breakfast show that is set to debut on SABC3 on Monday, October 4, at 05:00. The original working title was Op & Wakker. Then, when the show changed from being 100% Afrikaans to being bilingual (Afrikaans as well as English) the producers decided on a viewers' competition to choose the name that had to work in various languages.

Sources now tell me Expresso is what will most likely be used for the morning show that will be more lifestyle centered than SABC2's Morning Live or e.tv's Sunrise. Espresso is of course perfect. The Italian moniker for that jolting black brew perfectly conveys what the show will be about: Espresso = Expresso. Expresso won't be just concentrated coffee to wake up to, it will be a slightly upscaled morning show that's literally getting Italian stuff like kitchenware and designer things fitted and it's all about the style of it all.

Expresso as the name of the breakfast show has not yet been officially confirmed by SABC3, neither that the show will be done from The Equinox building which I scooped, that Top Billing's Michael Mol (same production company) will appear as the resident doc to give health advice, or of course that Liezel van der Westhuizen, Ewan Strydom and Katlegoe Maboe will be presenters. I've also showed the first conceptual art designs of how SABC3's Expresso will kind of look like.

Oh . . . and what's this I hear about e.tv now also wanting to do a morning show from Cape Town?

Expresso produced by Tswelopele Productions with presenters Liezel van der Westhuizen, Ewan Strydom and Katlego Maboe will boast at lounge area such as in the artist's impression above, and also incorporate a vast kitchen as envisioned below. The Fold Architecture is responsible for the interior design of this highly anticipated new morning show that will have a strong emphasis on lifestyle matters. The set has to be a real, functioning space which is making the new The Equinox building and its top floor pent house in Sea Point the perfect place.

I'm told the top section will accomodate the big set where filming will take place, with all the back of house and utility areas, as well as a full production office one floor below. The set will incorporate the latest in touch screen technologies and rear-projection screens. Besides the lounge and kitchen there will also be a performance area for artists, a state-of-the-art gym (Ewan Strydom will be the fitness expert) and expansive terrace with panoramic views Cape Town.

Get ready for couture and high-end industrial design and a ''fantasy world'' I'm told, with ''hanging gardens and an abundance of natural South African light''. Some of the best international companies as well as local designers and artists are working on this new SABC3 show's set design at this very moment.
