eNCA shifts Dan Moyane and Masego Rahlaga to co-anchor The South African Morning timeslot.

eMedia's eNCA (DStv 403) TV news channel once again did a line-up change on Monday this week with Dan Moyane and Masego Rahlaga replacing Gareth Edwards and Thami Ngubeni as the hosts of eNCA's The South African Morning timeslot.

Dan Moyane and Masego Rahlaga are now anchoring The South African Morning on eNCA between 06:00 and 09:00 on weekdays, with Gareth Edwards moved to and now anchoring the 12:00 to 15:00 timeslot.

In response to a media query, eNCA tells TVwithThinus that "eNCA has made some major changes to the morning news show, which was previously anchored by Gareth Edwards and Thami Ngubeni".

Dan Moyane says "It's a privilege for me to be back again in morning news. In a fast-paced world of news, I am excited to have the opportunity to deliver fresh news content every weekday morning".

Masego Rahlaga says "I'm truly humbled by this opportunity to work with Bra Dan bringing news and a bit of fun to our viewers every morning. Thank you to the eNCA management for trusting me with such an important role".

About why eNCA once again changed its timeslot anchor line-up and moved Dan Moyane and Masego Rahlaga to its morning slot, Norman Munzhelele, eNCA managing director, says "Many viewers have been asking us as a channel, to create a combo between Masego and Dan".

"When they have appeared on screen together for minor projects, their energy has been unmatched.  And now, when the people spoke, we listened and acted".

eNCA drops simulcast of e.tv's The Morning Show and switches back to own-produced The South African Morning after 4 days of viewer outrage.

Following a serious miscalculation of what pay-TV viewers want to watch in the mornings, as well as days of unrelenting viewer outrage, eNCA (DStv 403) on Friday morning brought back The South African Morning without any explanation after four days of simulcastin e.tv's low-rated The Morning Show.

On Monday eMedia's eNCA TV news channel - as part of yet another on-air and logo rebrand, dropped its The South African Morning time-block, replacing it with e.tv's The Morning Show between 06:00 and 09:00, produced by Cheeky Media with Yusuf Stevens as executive producer.

The Morning Show also added Faith Mangope to the softer lifestyle-slanted show which does sponsored inserts with a lesser emphasis on news and that bears more liking to SABC3's Expresso.

The drastic change prompted unrelenting viewer scorn the past four days with the drastic eNCA schedule change which was met with a barrage of DStv subscribers slamming the channel for replacing the much more newsy strand, co-anchored by the well-liked Gareth Edwards and Tumelo Mothotoane, with the lower production values of The Morning Show.

Viewers were fuming over The Morning Show - which bears no relation to the Apple TV+ drama series of the same name - with presenters who were berated for doing book segments at 6:15am and frivolous lifestyle segment discussions as they stumbled over words, sound and video problems, eating KFC on air, and the softer show's lack of news.

An avalanche of viewers were very vocal over the fact that they have access to e.tv and The Morning Show as a channel on DStv and would watch that if they wanted to.

Viewers said that they were now tuning out eNCA and switching to rival Newzroom Afrika (DStv 405) and SABC2's Morning Live which remains the perennial frontrunner in the South African morning breakfast show TV ratings race.

On Friday morning, The South African Morning was suddenly back without explanation, with Gareth Edwards once again anchoring the early morning time-block but this time solo. Tumelo Mothotoane anchored the NewsLink block solo from 9:00 to 12:00.

eMedia, in response to a media query about eNCA's morning fracas and the switchback, told TVwithThinus on Friday afternoon that "Due to popular demand, The South African Morning returns to eNCA with Gareth Edwards from 6:00 to 9:00. Tumelo will be on-air from 9:00 to 12:00. We have reunited viewers with the news and entertainment they are used to".

eNCA initially decided to cancel The South African Morning and simulcast e.tv's The Morning Show to rather stretch its production of live news hours from 22:00 until midnight, in response to competition from Newzroom Afrika. 

Although placing The South African Morning back on its schedule as an own in-house production, eNCA will continue to now stay in live news programming until midnight. 

Also returning to eNCA is anchor Shahan Ramkissoon who left a year ago, who is now anchoring The Last Word on Thursday snd Friday nights at 20:00.

eNCA changes its weekend programming line-up again; Gareth Edwards, Faith Mangope return, Nhlanhla Sehume added.

eNCA (DStv 403) is once again changing its weekend line-up from 1 December and adding new faces after previously introduced weekend programming decisions slowly unraveled as presenters left and blocks failed to gain traction.

eNCA's latest weekend programming shuffle will see Nhlanhla Sehume join Morning News Today between 07:00 and 09:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, co-hosting with Duduzile Ramela.

Between 13:00 and 14:00 Marcelle Gordon will now anchor eNCA's Lunchtime slot over weekends.

Gareth Edwards who stepped away from eNCA anchoring and did stand-in blocks over the past few years is returning to eNCA on-air permanently and will anchor NewsNight from 17:00 to 20:00 on Saturdays and 17:00 to 19:00 on Sundays on eNCA.

He will co-anchor NewsNight with Faith Mangope who is popping up on eNCA after she did Sunrise until she and the show got dumped and replaced with The Morning Show earlier this year.

e.tv's investigative magazine show Checkpoint will broadcast on eNCA at 19:00 on Sundays going up against Carte Blanche on M-Net (DStv 101), and the new satire puppet show, Almost News with Chester Missing will follow at 19:30 on Sundays.

About joining eNCA over weekends Nhlanhla Sehume who has done guest presenting on Carte Blanche, says "To be part of the new look programming is a great personal milestone. I am really excited about the challenge." 

Marcelle Gordon says "eNCA Lunchtime will keep you in the news loop on the weekends. It promises to be fast-paced, with lots of live news reportage".

Gareth Edwards says "eNCA has been my home for more than a decade. There was no doubt in my mind when I was asked to join our on-air division in a more permanent capacity again, that this was where I wanted to be".

Faith Mangope says "I am so excited to be joining the eNCA family for NewsNight weekends. Broadcasting and telling South Africa's stories, in particular, is a passion of mine. To do it alongside a talented and highly acclaimed team makes it that much more special".

REVIEW. eNews Direct on e.tv is an ugly, awful, disjointed, technically flawed, hashtagging rehashing vacuum of frenetic nothingness.

What was this? No, really ... what was this?

e.tv dumped its eNews Prime Time news bulletin and replaced it on Monday evening with what can only be described as one of the most awful, technically terrible and most cringe-worthy pieces of television trashnews since the disastrous launch of ANN7 (DStv 405).

eNews Direct on e.tv is literally the worse piece of South African produced TV news I watched since the jaw-droppingly bad launch of ANN7.

Have the people at e.tv, eNews and eNCA ever heard of the word "rehearsal"? Even more importantly, have they no shame?

If this is what "TV news" looks like after a rehearsal or dry-runs, people really should get fired.

eNews Direct is inexcusably bad and very poorly executed and e.tv is doing a big disservice to viewers with this misdirected mess.

eNews Direct that started on Monday night was filled with wrong camera cuts, awful and erratic camerawork, a news reader who looked more interested in her tablet, numerous cringe-inducing mistakes, a dumbed down weather map, a lot of stuff that completely didn't work and was an utter disorganised mess.

eNews Direct, e.tv's extremely disappointing latest iteration of a news bulletin is an abominable mess - it's hard to believe that people who've been doing news for years are responsible for this abject failure which feels like a total disservice to viewers when it comes to news.

If you've ever seen a kitten that got into a basket of wool, you will have an idea of what e.tv's dismal eNews Direct is: a messy and disorganised heap of stuff that doesn't gel, doesn't make sense and that is worsened by numerous human errors and technical mistakes.

Watching the first episode of e.tv's eNews Direct it was as if the SABC suddenly grew a parallel news service besides SABC News and did it in red and blue - but just as bad.

eNews Direct is painful to watch - as if e.tv with it wants to punish free-to-air viewers for not having DStv and watching eNCA (DStv 403).

It's as if e.tv is now signalling that people who submit themselves to watching this "news lite" mess with ugly social media latch on's, actually deserve it because they are too stupid to expect or deserve more, or too cheap to watch TV news on a pay-TV channel.

Universities are now simply "unives" according to e.tv and eNews Direct's lower-third banner.

Add the (other unintentional?) "mistakes" of e.tv and eNews Direct showing you things like competitor ANN7's Tweet front and centre, or the SABC News channel on a background monitor, and you will struggle to believe that what you see is actually really being produced and broadcast by e.tv backed with the expertise of the eNCA brand.

The structure, the content, the delivery, the shaky camerawork, the awkward angles, the anchor, the presentation, the script, the "studio", the colours - basically everything about eNews Direct on e.tv is extremely off-putting and just very wrong.

eNews Direct on e.tv is an ugly, disjointed, technically flawed mess, rehashing hashtagged news for an imagined viewership that must be... what? Morons?

Awkward anchor Dudu Ramela behaves like your irritating dinner guest or family member who makes it blatantly clear that she is more interested in her handheld device than you. Did she read her news script beforehand or just showed up to focus or where she would be standing for each of the 1 500 newsroom segment changes?

More interested in counting her lines, Dudu Ramela will look up and talk to you, but she doesn't really want to talk to you because her tablet is more important. That's the eNews Direct vibe, because the news must now be trendy and "trending".

eNews Direct will now even do "Entertainment" - but sadly even that "news" was all old news inside the new bulletin that is supposedly updating you on what's "trending". The (hashtag) "GarethCliff" was all old news, instead of eNews Direct giving viewers new information and facts.

Why is the respected eNCA anchor and social media editor Gareth Edwards even in and part of this downmarket eNews Direct mess?

Why does neither the cameramen with their poor camerawork, editors or director(s) seem to know what's happening next and what the flow is?

Why does this confusing half hour jump from this to that to sport to business to whatever else? Why is the quality of the camerawork and literally every single other element that makes up this eNews Direct bulletin so terribly weak and bad?

Where is the actual news content and the substance? eNews Direct comes across as a vacuum-like bubble of frenetic nothingness - giving viewers more of nothing and less of everything that the eNews Prime Time bulletin offered before.

What a waste to watch.

BREAKING. Longtime eNCA anchor Gareth Edwards finally done with being moved all over the dial; Dudu Ramela taking over in timeslot.

The exceptionally hardworking, diligent workhorse, and longtime eNCA (DStv 403) anchor Gareth Edwards is finally done after years of undeservingly being moved everywhere over the eNCA timeslot spectrum, finally stepping away from the achor desk to be replaced by Dudu Ramela in eNCA's lethargic 16:00 to 18:00 timeslot.

The highly informed, eloquent reader and skilled interviewer Gareth Edwards will become eNCA's new social media editor and is taking over from Damon Boyd who've left eNCA.

The shift comes after he never got his just reward for literally stepping in at short notice.

Gareth Edwards anchored basically every conceivable eNCA timeslot over different periods over the last few years - from early mornings to late nights to weekends to this week even anchoring Moneyline at 21:00 - and excelled in all, making him virtually eNCA's most valuable player and the channel's bona fide best bet to "step in and save" when it comes to its entire phalanx of on-air news talent.

Dudu Ramela is now taking over after having joined eNCA permanently, and will anchor the doldrum late afternoon timeslot where TV news audiences are at their lowest before a renewed surge at early primetime sees viewership start to spike again.

Dudu Ramela will show up on viewers' screens on eNCA at 16:00 from Monday 17 November and says she is "honoured" to anchor the afternoon timeslot on the 24-hour TV news channel after working as a freelancer for eNCA for almost three years.

In a statement likely concealing years of pent-up frustration which Gareth Edwards professionally kept under wraps, he says he wants to take "a step in a new direction".

"Having worked in the TV space for six years I am looking forward to the new challenge of bringing digital and TV closer together".

Gareth Edwards will still make appearances on eNCA as well as "a guest on headline shows as required" says the channel.

"As a born communicator with an excellent news sense, Gareth was the obvious choice for the position of social media editor," says Tim Spira, the head of eNCA Online.

"Gareth has made an incredibly valuable contribution to eNCA and has distinguished himself as a true professional," says eNCA.

He's not a farm animal. But eNCA's Gareth Edwards is a stud of sorts: Look closely on any farm and you'll find the farmer's one, real, true, most dependable workhorse - there to do the real hard slogging and to do what has to be done, come rain or shine.

Doing the hard work and the menial. Doing the big and the small. Doing what must be done. Doing it without complaining. And doing it day in and day out.

Jeremy Maggs is in France; Iman Rapetti is not well - suddenly leaving NewsNight on eNCA (DStv 403) from this Friday evening without either of its regular co-anchors.

Who steps in? Gareth Edwards.

eNCA says "Gareth Edwards will be standing in for them until Jeremy Maggs is back next week Tuesday" and that Gareth Edwards filling in on eNCA's flagship news programme of the day is "a temporary measure".

eNCA's workhorse anchor is without a shadow of a doubt Gareth Edwards.

Time and time again it is Gareth Edwards who steps into the breach - the mid-morning, early morning, late afternoon, afternoon, night owl TV news anchor for whom no timeslot, no anchorless void on the eNCA schedule is too demeaning, too unworthy, too unprestigious to help out with and fill.

It also makes Gareth Edwards the unsung hero, the most valuable player (MVP) as far as eNCA's phalanx of on-air anchors are concerned - the guy who makes little fuzz, but is willing to step in and help out whether its doldrum or primetime.

Where on the eNCA schedule has Gareth Edwards not been moved to, not been seen, and not been willing to serve?

He's been in more different timeslots (and holding fort successfully in all of them) than any other anchor at eNCA currently there or in the past.

He's not left, he hardly ever makes mistakes, and he always seems as if he really wants to be present and as if the news of the moment matters- irrespective of the time of the day.

With umpteenth chops and changes Gareth Edwards has become the most valuable, least recognised on-screen talent at eNCA, never really fully getting his due, yet always willing to go where needed.

Whether its as sports anchor, waking up super early, staying up until late at night, working with a co-anchor, flying solo, anchoring constantly with lesser people who all eventually leave (to other timeslots and to other media places) Gareth Edwards is the one who keeps going.

And don't think the control room can throw him something he can't handle. Can Gareth Edwards please be called what he really is? An unlauded, dependable, hardworking South African television star news anchor.

Gareth Edwards has filled in on NewsNight and on e.tv's terrestrial news before tonight and he will most probably do so again in future. He's no stranger to 6 o' clock in the evening as he's no stranger to 6 o' clock in the morning. Not a lot of TV people can say that.

Your most valuable player in any sport, any profession, is called that for a reason. It's because they don't sit on the bench. They're out on the field doing what needs to be done in order to win. They don't complain. They just get on with it.

As does Gareth Edwards. eNCA's under-appreciated, yet most valuable, workhorse.

BREAKING. eNCA going with 'gavel-to-gavel' live Oscar Pistorius murder trial coverage on television; doing a special Sunday preview.

eNCA (DStv 403) plans to broadcast "gavel-to-gavel" live coverage of the Oscar Pistorius murder trial for viewers whenever its allowed in the courtroom, and will have comprehensive reporting with nightly TV specials of the day's events between 19:00 and 20:00, repeated at 22:00.

ANN7 (DStv 405) did not announce Oscar Pistorius court trial coverage plans on television, but besides eNCA, MultiChoice will run a dedicated, 24-hour Oscar Pistorius trial TV channel on DStv on channel 199, and the Sabido-owned Platco Digital will also run its own dedicated, 24-hour Oscar Pistorius trial TV channel on OpenView HD (OVHD) on channel 119.

eNCA says the South African TV news channel will have an hour long Oscar Pretorius murder trial preview show on Sunday night at 18:00 as it gears up for covering "one of the biggest news stories of the year".

From Monday 3 March eNCA will broadcast live courtroom coverage and ongoing expert analysis and interpretation from a special vantage point outside the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

eNCA will use its specialist court reporter Karyn Maughan who has covered the story right from that shocking day last year on Valentine's Day when Oscar Pretorius shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

eNCA's team of reporters who will also cover the unfolding court room and news proceedings include Annika Larson, Phakamile Hlubi, Uveka Rangappa, Cathy Mohlahlana, Jeremy Maggs, Iman Rappetti and Gareth Edwards who will field anchor from outside the Pretoria court room.

"Everyone will be covering the Oscar Pistorius trial," says Patrick Conroy, eNCA's group head of news.

"The difference will be the quality of reporting, accuracy and insights into what is going on. We have specialist reporters to do this. We will also provide consistent updates on Twitter and our website enca.com".

"While the Oscar Pistorius trial is undoubtedly one of the biggest stories of the year, we will make sure our viewers also get regular updates on all other important news stories," says Mapi Mhlangu, eNCA news director.

eNCA ANCHOR CHANGES. Joanne Joseph moves to mornings opposite Gareth Edwards, Nikiwe Bikitsha gets the afternoons on eNCA.

There's been no announcement about its window dressing or official statement but eNCA (DStv 403) confirms what viewers have been seeing on their TV screens since the beginning of the month which is that Joanne Joseph has now moved to the mornings.

Joanne Joseph's former old late afternoon timeslot on the 24-hour news channel is now being filled by Nikiwe Bikitsha who is back on air on eNCA full-time after overseas studies.

eNCA tells me that Joanne Joseph is the new permanent co-anchor opposite Gareth Edwards in the morning slot between 09:00 and 13:00.

Nikiwe Nikitsha (below) now anchors the late afternoon eNCA slot between 16:00 and 18:00 where Joanne Joseph used to anchor.

eNCA on-air changes as Dan Moyane, Gareth Edwards, Eleni Giokos and Nikiwe Bikitsha are on the move.

Viewers of the eNCA (DStv 403), South Africa's only independent 24-hour TV news channel continues to see an on-air sea change of faces since last month which is continuing in July and will continue into August as familiar faces left and continue to leave the channel and new faces are added.

While the eNCA is keeping its brilliant primetime pairing of Iman Rappetti and Jeremy Maggs intact on the channel's flagship nightly newscast News Night, a swirl of changes has been happening.

Dan Moyane joined the eNCA on-air from the beginning of this month who've previously worked for eNews. He now anchors with Ayanda Allie-Paine from 06:00 to 09:00 on weekdays on the eNCA.

Nikiwe Bikitsha has been seen back on the air, reporting for the channel on Nelson Mandela after her year-long study break. The eNCA has not yet said where Nikiwe Bikitsha will be used in future.

Dan Moyane's addition is a potential interesting eNCA conflict of interest: the eNCA says Dan Moyane will "continue to play a role in the corporate sector" where he is the corporate affairs executive of MMI Holdings Limited.

It's not clear why the eNCA would put someone on as an anchor who is also a "spin doctor" of sorts. Are news anchor not supposed to be impartial and unbiased?

Apparently not at the eNCA - the now gone Macfarlane Moleli blatantly made know his own political inclinations live on the eNCA in September last year

Patrick Conroy, the group head of news at the eNCA says "Dan Moyane is one of the most experienced broadcasters in South Africa having worked for the BBC, 702 and eNews previously."

Patrick Conroy says "we will confirm Nikiwe Bikitsha's role in due course. She very kindly returned early from the United States to assist with our coverage of former president Nelson Mandela. We still have a few things to finalise but we are thrilled to have her back too."

Other major eNCA on-air changes involve Gareth Edwards moving from the morning slot to anchor the news on the eNCA now from 9:00 to 13:00.

Leaving the eNCA on-air team from August is the other major jewel in the crown of the news channel: the excellent Eleni Giokos who is going on holiday to Greece in August a year after she joined the eNCA from CNBC Africa (DStv 410).

Eleni Giokos won't be gone permanently, but she might not be back in the mornings on the eNCA when she returns where her addition to the channel with stellar coverage, intelligent conversation and informed and off-the-cuff background information she has at the tip of her fingers make for clever television.

"Eleni Giokos has now been offered a full-time contract with the eNCA and will return to play a more prominent role within the business," says Patrick Conroy.

"We are beefing up, not making wholesale changes. Dan Moyane's return to the eNCA signals our intention to add gravitas to key areas of our business," says Patrick Conroy.

"We are in discussion with a number of senior TV news people and look forward to announcing more additions to our team in the next few months," says Patrick Conroy.

eNCA news channel on DStv unveils its excellent new anchor line-up; adding Eleni Giokos as permanent new anchor.

eNCA (DStv 403) unveiled its new anchor line-up to co-incide with the name change of the eNews Channel to simply eNCA and its expansion to the United Kingdom from tomorrow.

The new eNCA anchor line-up is excellent. It not only shows what's possible when you invest in people as a news media outfit, but the experienced telegenic news anchors are all qualified and the eNCA has a cache of talented TV news stars making several options possible.

The eNCA's new line-up will fully and officially come into effect from Monday 20 August although Iman Rappetti and Jeremy Maggs already co-anchored News Night together on Thursday night last week as their very first - and very successful - try-out.

06:00 - 09:00 Morning News Today

Gareth Edwards, Ayanda Allie-Payne

Gareth Edwards and Ayanda Allie Paine will co-anchor the morning broadcast from now on. 

Ayanda Allie Paine will have to go to bed early so as to not fall asleep on the job. 

Ayanda Allie Paine is the least experienced of all the permanent new anchors; but is very able supported by the excellent Gareth Edwards who've transitioned extremely successfully from sport to anchoring the general news. 

Bonus points for the times when Gareth Edwards has already shown to be able to suddenly integrate the latest sport scores into news bulletins and immediately provide context and insight without the help of a teleprompter.

09:00 - 13:00

Macfarlane Moleli, Eleni Giokos

Macfarlane Moleli has more than paid his dues and continues to do so (and how wonderful that someone who studied on a rugby bursary can become a news anchor!). Eleni Giokos who joined the eNews Channel in July - news I scooped RIGHT HERE and who have done anchor duty during the day during August now gets this fixed anchor position. 

Macfarlane Moleli is well experienced as a TV anchor and holding down mid-morning coverage - as is Eleni Giokos.

Eleni Giokos must be so glad to be away from the doldrum pre-recorded CNBC Africa sponsored seminars which is so embarrassing to that business news channel while real news is happening. Eleni Giokos took the floor running and is a formidable asset for the eNCA in the anchor stable. 

With business news coverage starting mid-morning she's also perfectly placed to bring immediate insight and analysis on business matters if that's required. Her sterling acquisition by eNCA has immediately been put to good news.

13:00 - 16:00 News Day

Andrew Barnes, Bhavna Singh

There is simply no better agenda-setting, real-time TV news show in South Africa during midday than News Day anchored from Cape Town by the already-good-wine-getting-better Andrew Barnes, recently paired with Bhavna Singh.

News Day on the eNCA does for South African TV viewers what American local city broadcasts have been doing for years and which Americans take for granted - it's real news, told visually, as it happens. 

News Day not only report the news, but responds to it before the story is done - very difficult to do when you don't yet have all the answers or the complete picture and can't get guests to studio because they're still making the news.

Bhavna Singh is the next new co-anchor for Andrew Barnes. Will she last in this new timeslot? Since they all seem to leave, leaving Andrew Barnes almost constantly having to settle in with a new changing co-anchor dynamic. 

He does pull the musical chairs of changing co-anchors off very well however - as well as being the de facto voiceover go-to guy for the eNCA news promos.

Bhavna Singh is a tad more serious in her on-screen presence than Andrew Barnes' previous co-anchors - it's not necessarily a bad thing. Being less breezy means overall more grativas for News Day as her demeanour more closely echoes that of the formidable Andrew Barnes.

16:00 - 18:00

Joanne Joseph
