14th kykNET Silwerskermfees Back in Camps Bay as Questions Abound Over its Future after Canal+ Takeover and Cost-cutting

by Thinus Ferreira

The 14th kykNET Silwerskermfees returned to Camps Bay and The Bay Hotel from 19 to 22 August as questions abound over the future of this crucially important South African film festival.

The 14th film festival, as with everything done by the pay-TV operator, is now in the crosshairs of cost-cutting after Canal+'s takeover of MultiChoice, with the new French bosses looking to cut costs by €400 million (R7.5 billion) by 2030.

The 14th kykNET Silwerskermfees film festival screened four features, 17 short films, and the first episodes of several upcoming new TV series and documentaries.

The programme this year, for the first time, also included short films from the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival - another indication of how Canal+'s takeover of MultiChoice is infusing and changing all aspects of what used to be MultiChoice, including the Silwerskermfees.

Disturbing to a lot of South African filmmakers - both veteran and established as well as emerging content makers - is that there were only three feature-length films in competition at the film festival. It was the smallest offering of new Afrikaans films in years.

That's due to content that was not ready, not ready in time, and simply not produced, for this year's festival.

TVwithThinus is aware of, and first spoke months ago, to filmmakers, producers and content makers who said their already approved projects for this year's Silwerskermfees got stalled when they were told the money is not forthcoming and that they would therefore not be in any position to meet production and principal photography deadlines.

In his speech on the festival's opening night, Waldimar Pelser, M-Net director for premium channels, noted that "At a time when more and more people are watching TV and film on small screens, often with video on top of video and attention that is divided, this week we will sit in a dark room and focus on just one thing: the projection on the big screen of Afrikaans stories that we at DStv and MultiChoice believe deserve to be made".

National Geographic's LION from 23 August is a 4-episode 'Real-Life' Natural History Homage to The Lion King

by Thinus Ferreira

LION, a new 4-episode natural history series coming to National Geographic (DStv 181) and Nat Geo WILD that took 4 years to film in Kenya, thematically, sound-wise and visually, looks a bit like Disney's animated film The Lion King - and very deliberately so as a kind of homage.

The 4-episode LION - with two episodes on Sunday 23 August at 18:00, and another two episodes on Sunday 30 August at 18:00 on both National Geographic and Nat Geo WILD - follows a young lion cub called Kio and his journey of becoming a lion king.

LION is executive produced by The Lion King director Jon Favreau, the BBC Studios Natural History unit's Mike Gunton, with the score composed by Hans Zimmer's Bleeding Fingers Music and additional vocals from the Nairobi Chamber Chorus/

The narrator of LION is O.J. Lynch, who was Mufasa in The Lion King stage production.

LION will also be available on Disney+.

LION was filmed over 4 years in Kenya's Masai Mara as the first natural history production to document a lion's complete journey from cub to king.

According to National Geographic, the crew, including local Kenyan filmmakers, logged nearly 1 400 filming days across 52 shoots, the most time ever spent in the field exclusively following a single pride.

"After tracking the lions in the field for 4 years, the pride never ceased to surprise us - what Kio endures and eventually becomes is extraordinary," says Jon Favreau in a supplied quote.

"Watching the hero's journey against the backdrop of nature was incredible to witness."

LION is produced by BBC Studios Natural History unit for National Geographic with Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton as executive producers.

Jane Atkins is series producer, and Simon Blakeney is co-executive producer. For National Geographic, Janet Han Vissering and Tom McDonald executive produce.

Canal+'s MultiChoice dumps Mzansi Bioskop, Mzansi Music, M-Net Movies 1, kykNET Lekker channels from DStv on 16 September, SuperSport channels renamed yet again

by Thinus Ferreira

Canal+'s MultiChoice is dumping M-Net's Mzansi Bioskop, Mzansi Magic, M-Net Movies 1 and kykNET Lekker channels from 16 September from DStv in the latest culling to hit the South African pay-TV operator after Canal+'s takeover that led to drastic cost-cutting and restructuring.

Meanwhile, DStv's SuperSport TV channels are being renamed yet again, in the latest, ever-ongoing name-shuffle.

TVwithThinus made a media query about the abrupt removal of the channels and the axing of the 4 TV channels on DStv was confirmed by MultiChoice.

M-Net added the Mzansi Bioskop (DStv 164) to DStv in September 2013, with the channel getting dumped after 13 years.

It served as a very good funnel and platform for content from emerging South African filmmakers, whose first short films and feature-length films - primarily from alumni from the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) - were premiered on Mzansi Bioskop.

Quite bizarre is MultiChoice and M-Net's axing of M-Net Movies 1, leaving it with M-Net Movies 2. There's as yet no answer or explanation as to why DStv will sit with a "M-Net Movies 2" TV channel, but then no "1" on the DStv channel line-up.

It's also unclear whether MultiChoice is going to decrease the add-on price for the M-Net Movies package, since Dstv subscribers who have to pay more to add it, will now lose a channel, and customers who want to sign up for this package will now just buy one channel instead of two.

M-Net Movies 1 (DStv 104) originally launched as M-Net Magic in 1995, and was eventually rebranded as M-Net Movies 1 in 2005. Even this channel went through several name changes and genre changes, after which M-Net reverted it back to being called M-Net Movies 1.

Mzansi Music (DStv 321) is also being cancelled, 14 years after M-Net started the channel in 2012.

M-Net's kykNET Lekker (DStv 148) is also getting dumped on 16 September, just 6 years after it was launched in March 2026 after it was created specifically for DStv Access subscribers who will now see M-Net and kykNET rip this content away from these paying customers.

TV withThinus asked for the specific reasons for each of these channels' termination and when the decision was made to end these channels on 16 September.

"As viewing habits continue to change, MultiChoice is refining the DStv channel line-up to match," MultiChoice said.

"Rather than spreading similar content across many channels, we're concentrating on fewer, stronger channels, giving subscribers a cleaner, easier-to-navigate line-up and a better viewing experience overall."

Also once again changing, are the names of several SuperSport TV channels on DStv.

According to MultiChoice, "The SuperSport updates introduce clearer, sport-specific channels, making it even easier for fans to find their favourite sporting action".

SuperSport Variety 1 (DStv 206) is being renamed from 18 August as SuperSport Football Plus, which will now become a "dedicated home for premium football, featuring selected UEFA Champions League action and other major competitions".

SuperSport Variety 2 (DStv 207) is being renamed as SuperSport KickOff for so-called "overflow football events", while SuperSport Variety 3 (DStv 208) is being renamed SuperSport Africa "showcasing the best of South African and African sport".

MultiChoice is changing SuperSport Variety 4 (DStv 209) to SuperSport Action, while SuperSport Action (DStv 210) is getting rebranded as SuperSport Extra for "premium live sport whenever multiple major events take place simultaneously".

There's been no press release from SuperSport yet about any of these name and branding changes.

PSL 30th season-starter blackout on SABC as sub-licensing SuperSport negotiations with Canal+ Africa fail to reach a deal in time

Thinus Ferreira

There will be no PSL football on the SABC today as the 2026/2027 season kicks off with the opening round of Betway Premiership fixtures starting on Saturday, 1 August after the South African public broadcaster and SuperSport's French-owned Canal+ Africa both failed to reach a sub-licensing deal in time.

In an embarrassing admission, the SABC and Canal+ Africa, in a joint statement on Friday evening, said they have failed to reach a deal to show PSL matches from the start of the new season, from today on free-to-air television in South Africa.

While the SABC's discussions with Canal+ continue to "progress positively", there's been a massive failure in reaching any deal timeously between the public broadcaster and the French pay-TV operator that took over MultiChoice.

The SABC hopes to sign some type of deal with Canal+ Africa to start broadcasts of the Betway Premiership only from around 15 August 2026.

Nomsa Chabeli, SABC CEO, in the statement said the public broadcaster remains "optimistic" that a deal will be signed with Canal+ Africa's SuperSport "soon" to bring PSL matches to free-to-air viewers.

"We remain optimistic that these will be concluded soon, allowing us to bring even more South African football to audiences across the country."

"The SABC appreciates that football supporters were looking forward to the opening weekend of the Betway Premiership and extends its gratitude to audiences for their patience and understanding while the remaining discussions are concluded."

David Mignot, Canal+ Africa and MultiChoice Group CEO, in the statement says, "We continue to have engaging discussions about the rest of the 2026/2027 free-to-air sub-licensing agreement, which we hope to conclude soon, more so in this historic 30th season of the PSL."

Neither Nomsa Chabeli nor David Mignot explained any of the reasons why the SABC and Canal+ Africa both failed to reach a deal in time by the start of today's new season.

New 10-episode Adventure Time: Side Quests set for October release on Cartoon Network in Africa

by Thinus Ferreira

The new animated series, Adventure Time: Side Quests, will make its debut on 5 June on Hulu and Disney+ in the United States, and months later in South Africa on the Cartoon Network (DStv 301) on 5 October.

Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, South African viewers will get to see the new spin-off series four months after America, with Finn and his dog Jake reuniting for new adventures, or so-called "side quests" in the fantastical land of Ooo.

Taking place before the events of the original Adventure Time, the series moves away from the heavy serialised storytelling of its later years, to return to the lighter, standalone, episodic format of the original show's early seasons.

John DiMaggio is back to voice Jake the Dog, alongside other returning favourites like Tom Kenny as Ice King, Hynden Walch as Princess Bubblegum, and Olivia Olson as Marceline. Young Finn will be voiced by Sasha Knight.

The series is leaving the Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) platform ecosystem in the United States and will stream exclusively on Disney+ and Hulu.

It's licensed for profit and to make the project financially viable, WBD chose to license the American streaming rights to the highest external bidder, which was Disney.

The longtime series showrunner Adam Muto is not attached to this series. Instead, it is being helmed and executive produced by Nate Cash, the former Adventure Time supervising director and storyboard artist.

In order to match the creative spirit of the original show's early seasons, the crew is not using traditional scripts. Instead, a team of franchise veterans and guest artists are acting as storyboarders to organically craft the dialogue, pacing, and visual gags from basic outlines.

Adventure Time: Side Quests is structured as 10-episode companion show consisting of self-contained, light-hearted, standalone adventures.

Vanessa Brookman, Warner Bros. Discovery general manager, international kids, animation and franchise, says "With its wit, originality and unpredictability, Adventure Time has always been quintessential Cartoon Network".

"In Side Quests, Nate and the team have crafted the perfect entry point for new audiences discovering the Land of Ooo for the first time, while offering a heartfelt love letter to fans who have been on the extraordinary journey from the very beginning."

Nate Cash says "Making Side Quests felt like making the original Adventure Time, which felt like hanging out with art school buddies making professional cartoons. That sounds like a big sandwich of feelings, and it was! You're going to love these new adventures with Finn and Jake!"

kykNET Adds 6-episode Series Boere in Patagonië from 6 July with Johan Badenhorst Visiting and Exploring Archaic Afrikaans Speakers in South America

by Thinus Ferreira

The new 6-episode series Boere in Patagonië will start on kykNET (DStv 144) from 6 July, with Johan Badenhorst returning to South America to visit and do interviews with the archaic Afrikaans-speaking people of Patagonia.

The new series follows from a 4-day visit that Johan Badenhorst and his Voetspore team did in Patagonia in 2023 during the 12th season of Voetspore: Cono Sur.

In that season, Johan Badenhorst told people like farmer Juan Schlebusch that he would return in future for another visit, and he did keep his promise.

The group of South Americans who speak an older version of Afrikaans, are the descendants of the group of Afrikaans-speaking South Africans who emigrated to Argentina in 1902 and continued to speak the language.

For Boere in Patagonië, Johan Badenhorst travelled with the production team of Stefan Sonnekuns, Adam Heyns and James Robb back to Comodoro Rivadavia and Sarmiento, and also visited places like Esquel on the other side of the Andes.

M-Net's kykNET channel has started running an on-air promo for Boere in Patagonië, noting that the series will start on 6 July, which immediately led to interest from viewers and readers asking for more information.

TVwithThinus asked kykNET publicity a week ago for more information about the show since kykNET is broadcasting the promo on-air but kykNET refused to provide any information about Boere in Patagonië.

Boere in Patagonië will be of interest to Afrikaans viewers, historians, linguists, and travel enthusiasts.

Although different, Boere in Patagonië shares some similarities with the multiple Safta award-winning documentary film from 2015, The Boers at the End of the World, which visited the same 100-year old community of people of Dutch descent who sailed across the ocean to South America.

Mzansi Magic adds 10 new mini-series from May to DStv local slate produced by youth-led South African production companies

by Thinus Ferreira

M-Net's Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) will be rolling out 10 new mini-series starting from May, several of which are helmed by youth-led South African production companies.

The plan is to strip these new mini-series from Mondays to Wednesdays, over a 10-week period, from 11 May and into July, three nights a week.

"We are excited to be sharing stories made by exciting, talented teams who really have their finger on the pulse," says  Shirley Adonisi, director for local entertainment channels.

"The mini-series format is a really important part of how we support industry development and create opportunities for creatives. It gives producers who've built their experience in film the chance to step into series storytelling by developing a three-part mini-series."

"The shift isn't just about format - it's about growing new skills in writing, directing and production. Through this process, we're helping creatives expand their craft while opening up more opportunities for directors, writers and production teams."

"At the end of the day, it's about creating a pathway, one that helps talent move from film into drama, and ultimately supports more jobs and long-term growth in the industry," adds Shirley Adonisi.

Included in the first six mini-series titles coming to Mzansi Magic are Love At Second Sight, produced by Ngomoya Films and starring Amanda Seome, Nduduzo Zuma, Aluve Mjali and Nimrod Nkosi.

It will air on Mzansi Magic from 11 May at 19:00. The mini-series' logline reads: "When her long-lost first love returns as her stable fiancé’s best friend, a successful woman must choose between the secure, prestige-filled life her family expects and the soulful connection she never truly outgrew."

Kuningi is from Weldun Media, the producers of Mzansi Magic films such as Entabani and Choose May’khethela, with the series centred on a single mother who lands the biggest opportunity of her career, only for it to reintroduce her to ghosts from the past, unearthing unresolved issues.

Kuningi will start on 18 May at 19:00, starring Samkelo Ndlovu, Kay Sibiya, Simphiwe Ngema, Andy Mnguni and Ratanang Mogotsi.

Amanzi Endlini is another Ngomoya Films production, set in the world of a traditionally married couple exploring the option of surrogacy.

Their decision brings complications and distrust into their relationship. "Will they secure their legacy, or have they invited in a force that could destroy them both?" reads the logline. Amanzi Endlini will start on 25 May at 19:00 on Mzansi Magic and the cast will be announced soon.

Ke Nyala Jwang?  is produced by Pula Bakgaga Media, the production house behind Isithembu sika Msongelwa.

According to the logline, it is a story "that explores the complexities of marriage in modern South Africa, navigating cultural expectations and family tensions" and it will start on 1 June at 19:00.

Lobola lama 2000's logline reads "Love is simple, lobola is not. After running into issues with his uncles, a Gen Z accountant is left with no choice but to send his friends to represent him in his lobola negotiations"

This mini-series will start on 8 June at 19:00 and is produced by Behind the Best. It stars Khensani Chauke, Nolwazi Tsebesha, Ntando Mazibuko, Khaya Dumakude, Edward Nkhumishe and Sonny Khwesa.

Mamfundisi Bae is scheduled to start on Mzansi Magic on 15 June at 19:00.

"A young pastor from a modern charismatic church stirs things up in a traditional congregation when she plans a bold send-off for the outgoing bishop - who’s also her father-in-law. However, with this move, she ends up clashing with the head of the women’s forum."

The cast of Mamfundisi Bae must still be announced with the series that is produced by Mthakathi Entertainment.

Why M-Net's Carte Blanche is exiting its Ferndale office space and switching to a work-from-home staff format

by Thinus Ferreira

M-Net's long-running weekly investigative current affairs programme Carte Blanche is exiting its office space in Johannesburg, with the show produced by Combined Artistic Productions that has decided to switch to a work-from-home format.

Combined Artistic Productions is giving up its office space in Oak Avenue in Johannesburg at the end of March.

What DStv subscribers of Canal+'s MultiChoice however see, and are familiar with on Sunday evenings on M-Net (DStv 101), is the beautiful blue-hue Carte Blanche set, located at Stark Studios, which remains in place.

"Combined Artists will be vacating its rented Ferndale offices at the end of this month as the building has been sold by its owner," John Webb, Carte Blanche executive producer, told TVwithThinus in response to a media query about the building move.

"We considered finding alternative office space but, given the experience gained during the pandemic and to improve operational efficiencies, we’ve decided instead to return to a work-from-home model."

"As our internal team is small and we rely on freelance producers and other technical contractors for the bulk of our content, a fixed office space is no longer a necessity."

Since Canal+ took over MultiChoice, all local programming is at risk, with Canal+ executives saying they're going with a "fine-comb through everything".

It's not yet publicly known what Canal+'s plans are for channels like M-Net and premium local programming like Carte Blanche, and if channels and shows like these will continue.

The M-Net channel will celebrate its 40th anniversary in October, with the 37-year-old Carte Blanche as the channel's longest-running local show.

First HBO Harry Potter series official teaser released as Canal+'s MultiChoice and M-Net have still not secured it for DStv

by Thinus Ferreira

On Wednesday evening HBO released the first official teaser for its upcoming new Harry Potter series, entitled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone that will debut over Christmas this year on its HBO Max video streaming service.

Canal+'s MultiChoice and M-Net (DStv 101) have so far failed to secure this series, set to run for a decade, for DStv subscribers in South Africa.

It means that currently, no DStv subscribers anywhere in Africa would be able to see the Harry Potter TV series when it starts in December 2026.

Canal+ and M-Net have failed to extend the output deal that expired at the end of December 2025 with Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) that existed for decades for Warner Bros TV and film studios content like TV series and films, as well as HBO content for M-Net.

It means that no HBO series or Warner films are currently available on the M-Net channel or the M-Net Movies channels on DStv for subscribers, with Canal+ that is busy with aggressive cost-cutting at MultiChoice.

Sky in the United Kingdom as well as other pay-TV operators worldwide, secured the upcoming Harry Potter series over a year ago, but in March 2026 MultiChoice and M-Net have nothing.

J.B. Perrette, the CEO and president of global streaming and games at WBD, has repeatedly referred to the upcoming Harry Potter TV series as "the streaming event of the decade".

During a 2026 press event in London, Perrette further amplified this, saying that when the first season of the Harry Potter series starts in December, it would be "the biggest streaming event in history and arguably in streaming, period".

So far, Canal+'s MultiChoice and M-Net will not make South African pay-TV subscribers part of this global viewing event who will be excluded.

Ironically, Canal+'s MultiChoice and M-Net will very likely be directly pushing many people who are not going to wait to see it, to pirate episodes of Harry Potter in order to watch it immediately in the way M-Net used to promote HBO's "Express from the US" content.

The official teaser of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone series was released on Wednesday evening, as part of a press event that HBO held in London for media.

Starting with the first of seven books of JK Rowling, it introduces the three central characters of Harry (Dominic McLaughlin), Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton) and Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) as 11-year-olds on the train to their first year at the Hogwarts wizarding school.

Scenes also include Harry meeting the half-giant Hagrid (Nick Frost), the introduction of Hogwarts' Sorting Hat and Harry's his first Quidditch game as Gryffindor seeker.

John Lithgow was cast as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape.

Filming takes place at Warner Bros.'s Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England, since July 2025 on the sets that were used for the Harry Potter movies.

Trace has a channel rebrand event for Trace Ngoma TV channel on DStv, MultiChoice CEO notes 'the evolution of a brand'

by Thinus Ferreira

On Wednesday night, TRACe held some type of launch event for its rebranded Trace Ngoma (DStv 326) TV channel on Canal+'s MultiChoice DStv platform, although it failed to tell media and journalists covering TV anything about it or that it would take place.

Trace rebranded Trace Africa to Trace Ngoma in December 2025, and now, three months later, decided to have some type of a rebranding launch event for it.

In December, Olivier Laouchez, co-founder and Trace CEO, in a statement, said "Trace Ngoma is where music meets identity. It amplifies the rhythms and stories that define South African culture and gives young people a space to connect and feel seen".

On Wednesday, Trace Southern Africa had the cheek to ask on its social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter, to ask "If you are not here where are you?!" - apparently too stupid to realise that media trying to cover TRACE and not aware of, and not told beforehand that something would happen, will be even more put off and care less about the channel in response to TRACE's basically non-existent media liaison efforts.

Somebody who was invited and who was told about the Trace Ngoma event was Willington Ngwepe, MultiChoice South Africa CEO and DStv Media Sales.

In a video recorded on Wednesday night by someone who attended, Willington Ngwepe is seen saying "It's a very special evening for us. Today we're celebrating the evolution of a brand. This brand has been a very stable offering on our linear broadcasting offering on DStv".

Willington Ngwepe noted "a partnership of over 23 years" that he sees "getting stronger and stronger for another 23 years" and said Trace is becoming "an anchor of the creative digital economy".

Olivier Laouchez, likely also spoke but it's not known what he said.

At the event, Trace apparently also talked about some type of app it has, but information about what was said about it wasn't shared.

Three months in, industry observers and advertisers have said they're still unsure of what Trace Ngoma is now and why the rebrand happened, with very little reporting industry reporting about it.

Angry MultiChoice execs sidelined by Canal+ frustrated and fearful for the(ir) future after decision-making moved to Paris - report

Frustrated MultiChoice executives, sitting in Randburg in Johannesburg and who used to have final approval on decisions, say they're fearful about the future and their futures, after new owner Canal+ swooped in and moved the final decision-making function to Canal+'s own executives in Paris.

In a new report by Africa Intelligence, MultiChoice executives are quoted as saying they're frustrated and angry about having been sidelined in the decision-making process regarding content and other decisions since Canal+ acquired MultiChoice in September 2025.

According to the report, several MultiChoice executives who used to be in the loop, explained that they were not even so much as consulted recently before the publication of Canal+'s financial results for 2025 that now includes MultiChoice.

Angry MultiChoice executives are blaming Maxime Saada, Canal+ CEO, and David Mignot, Canal+ Africa managing director, for the way that things inside MultiChoice have deteriorated and broken down.

Meanwhile discontent under MultiChoice executives are growing, as well as producers and content creators, with MultiChoice staff telling producers that projects, budgets and approvals are all delayed and stacking up at Canal+ headquarters in Paris where Canal+ either can't or won't make decisions and do final sign-offs.

According to Africa Intelligence, the new Canal+ Africa management structure includes the former MultiChoice CEO, Calvo Mawela who has been kept on as Canal+ Africa president; Hennie Visser as director of Africa operations, and Byron du Plessis who was MultiChoice SA CEO, as a regional manager.

Aziz Diallo now oversees French-speaking Africa, Kemi Omotosho is now responsible for Nigeria, Retief Tromp is looking after English-speaking countries outside of South Africa, while Glauco Ferreira is overseeing the Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa.

Fuming MultiChoice and SuperSport executives say their hands are tied and they can no longer make decisions, are isolated and have no final say with anything anymore, and have to send decisions to Paris and then wait approval from there.

Not only are these executives frustrated, they're also wondering about their futures within what used to be MultiChoice or Canal+ Africa going forward.

Canal+ is shuttering MultiChoice's loss-making streamer Showmax by 30 April, and while neither staff involved with Showmax, or within MultiChoice can he retrenched, Canal+ is now going to offer voluntary severance packages to try and get rid of workers who might want out.

According to the agreement Canal+ signed with South Africa's Competition Commission, no MultiChoice workers can be retrenched for a period of three years.

What is however happening, is that people who work for service providers and production companies making local content for DStv channels like M-Net, kykNET, Mzansi Magic and Africa Magic are losing jobs.

This is because the volume of content that MultiChoice used to commission for these channels are decreasing due to Canal+'s cost-cutting, and because of the end of Showmax as a separate platform.

TV CRITIC's NOTEBOOK. On yet another M-Net PR failure and failed promises about Mzansi Magic's Big Brother and nothing being done to properly communicate with media trying to cover it

by Thinus Ferreira

Colour me baffled, disappointed and jaded (yet again!) by the latest just-concluded season of M-Net's Big Brother Mzansi: Bazozwa on Mzansi Magic - once again in my book a complete failure in anything resembling passable communication and proper MultiChoice PR in liaising on a bare bones, adequate way with the press trying, and supposed to, cover this show.

After raising the issue(s) with M-Net's terrible and non-existent PR around Big Brother Mzansi directly with M-Net's PR people in 2025 - in emails, as well as in-person - nothing happened, and nothing changed for the 6th season of Big Brother Mzansi on DStv, again produced by Red Pepper Pictures.

After meeting with M-Net publicists Suzaan Keyter and Portia Hlongwane, responsible for Mzansi Magic publicity, and despite promises that all of the issues raised would be addressed and not happen again for the upcoming season, absolutely nothing - and I mean nothing changed or improved in the slightest.

Neither Portia Hlongwane, nor the Playmakers PR company, came to the party in any improved way the past few months in terms of starting to communicate in a dynamic and timeous way with media who want to, and would cover Big Brother Mzansi as a local DStv reality show.

And that is after discussions about what is wrong and why, and after promises that there would be discussions with the PR company (which, it turns out, also apparently never happened).

Why is it so impossible, and seemingly so difficult and too high a bar, for M-Net to actually communicate with media and to build and sustain and have a media liaison relationship about a show like Big Brother Mzansi and about what is happening around it?

This is not rocket science.

It's as easy as picking up a phone and calling someone, using Whatsapp, emailing someone, asking them if they got an email, suggesting stories and taking the few minutes to reach out and suggest collaborations in terms of articles, sending notifications about what would be happening and about talking - none of which Mzansi Magic seems capable of doing, or seems to want to do with Big Brother Mzansi with media who have been covering it for years.

Instead of griping about Canal+ Africa paying people for PR who are not doing what they're supposed to be doing - or simply doing nothing - imagine if journalists and publications did reporting and coverage and articles about Big Brother Mzansi because they actually heard from M-Net and Playmakers about what is going to happen, what is happening, about story ideas, about what media interactions would be taking place, and afterwards about what was said there?

Similar to 2023 and before when M-Net left media (myself and others included) completely out of the loop regarding Big Brother Mzansi, again did the same in 2024, and again did nothing in 2025, it all happened and played out PR-wise (despite assured promises that it wouldn't) exactly the same again in late 2025 and 2026 with the just-concluded season.

Cue the same problems and non-communication, about the exact same gripes that M-Net PR promised and promised it would rectify (and never does).

After the 6th season launch and press event in the form of a house-party reunion early December 2025 where Shirley Adonisi, channel director of general entertainment for Mzansi Magic spoke, I asked Portia Hlongwane yet again afterwards what happened, since media including myself, were not even told it would be taking place.

How to report on something you didn't even get a notification or a heads-up would happen, so as to plan possible coverage? What was said there by Shirley Adonisi and others?

Of course, there was once again an "overnight stay" in January 2026 for some media and content creators, the season's premiere night in January, and the Big Brother Mzansi live finale and winner walk-out on Sunday with a "watch party" organised by Mzansi Magic.

The final was followed by yet another media day where some of the housemates and winner spoke. Again: No heads-up from M-Net or Playmakers about any of this at all.

What exactly do M-Net and Mzansi Magic want from media trying to cover something like Big Brother Mzansi? And what exactly are those responsible for publicity for it, doing - and not doing - to try and get these desired outcomes from media?

As if it hasn't yet been said in the past, and in-person: What is done (and not being done) isn't working.

The very easiest and most ridiculous thing that M-Net publicity people and PR agencies, tasked with and paid to Communicate about Big Brother Mzansi can do, is so preposterously simple, and yet seemingly so difficult. And it's the title of a Carly Rae Jepsen song:

Call Me. Maybe.

Conservation biologist Dr Steve Boyes on new National Geographic documentary film Ghost Elephants: 'We look for historical genetic connections'

by Thinus Ferreira

Just like the iconic scene from the first Jurassic Park movie, where a real T-Rex ends up in the visitor's centre main rotunda in its massive glory as a banner glides down, Dr Steve Boyes stands in front of a display of an elephant at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., in Ghost Elephants.

But he isn't after a dinosaur.

The South African National Geographic Explorer and conservation biologist is trying to track down a creature far more elusive.

In Ghost Elephants, a new documentary film from acclaimed director Werner Herzog, Dr Steve Boyes - a real modern-day Indiana Jones - goes to the museum's rotunda, and later into its archives to extract a DNA sample, to examine "Henry", the largest elephant ever killed.

Directed, written and narrated by Werner Herzog, and produced by Ariel León Isacovitch and Herzog, Ghost Elephants is from Sobey Road Entertainment, The Roots Production Service and Skellig Rock.

Ghost Elephants is available on Disney+ and premieres on National Geographic Wild (DStv 182) on Wednesday, 11 March at 18:00 and in the forest of Angola, Dr Steve Boyes is determined to prove their existence.

With the film's release comes the coffee table book "Okavango and the Source of Life" by Dr Steve Boyes, which expands the journey beyond the documentary film, with more than 100 striking photographs, detailed maps, and Boyes’ personal reflections from years of gruelling expeditions to the Angolan headwaters of the Okavango.

During the course of Ghost Elephants, Dr Steve Boyes and a crew travel into the mysterious Angola highlands searching for proof of the existence of a missing "tribe" of large elephants - part legend, part hope, part superstition and part of Africa's unsolved secrets: The ghost elephants of Lisima.

Teaming up with fellow National Geographic Explorer Kerllen Costa and three KhoiSan master trackers – Xui, Xui Dawid, and Kobus – they venture into a world where technology fails and that requires human eyes and human intuition to try and track down the potential living descendants of the largest land mammal ever recorded.

I had the opportunity to speak to Dr Steve Boyes about Ghost Elephants and got to ask him two questions.

"For National Geographic, this year is the 10th anniversary of the Okavango Wilderness Project," he says, giving a "bigger picture" overview of what he's been busy with.

"We have discovered and documented over 275 new species through science, new populations of endangered species up in these same highlands in Angola, working with the local Luchazi, the Chokwe and the Mbundu hunters and traditional leaders there," Dr Steve Boyes told me.

"So this is a long-term programme and we work across genetics, environmental DNA, detailed river surveys and storytelling to explain those findings to not just people in Angola and in Africa, but people globally, since science needs translation".

Seen done in Ghost Elephants, I also asked him to weigh in on modern humanity's ability to use things like supercomputers to do genetic analyses from a 70-year-old elephant skull and make genetic comparisons that help in these scientific quests and, although not out in the real world, aid scientists in finding proof of things we never would have been able to get before.

"We have the largest freshwater fish collection in the Southern hemisphere, so we can now employ new technology to help us. With one litre of water, we can tell you every single fish that's been in it during the last two weeks," he explains.

"Computers are allowing us to do this - taking air samples, taking water samples, we can tell you everything. So these databases we already use, and as computing power increases, our opportunities for analysis increase."

"What we're really doing is to look at all of the elephants across Africa - they're all split up now from each other, disjunct from each other."

"And we look at historical genetic connections, where corridors need to be created to connect them again, to see how these animals moved around 100 years ago. And all of that is told through genetics."

"Science advances," Dr Steve Boyes tells me.

"A lot of my expeditionary work, we consider ourselves as working for future scientists. We take simple water samples and have a water bank that we keep for scientists in 2050 who might be looking for something. The advance of science is moving really quickly."

Ghost Elephants is on Disney+ and premieres on National Geographic Wild (DStv 182) on Wednesday, 11 March at 18:00.
