Muvhango's season 25 on SABC2 adds new faces as Word of Mouth Productions promises 'new romances and constant plot twists'.

by Thinus Ferreira

The 25th season of Muvhango is adding some new faces and bringing some old characters back with Word of Mouth Productions saying it's returning the Venda primetime soap on SABC2 to its roots for this season with many surprises and twists in store.

"For the past 25 seasons, we have given the viewers everything from joy, tears and even anger and now we're taking it back to the origin just to remind viewers why we have been around for as long as we have," the production company says.

The Muvhango producers say the 25th season of the show promises "new storylines, new romances and constant plot twists which will have viewers grabbing on to their seats".

Joining the show is Tshepo "Howza" Mosese as the new character of Manditi, described as "woven from mystery, intelligence, ruthlessness and charisma". "Ruthlessness defines his actions as he stops at nothing to achieve his goals," the show says.

Aubrey Mmakola, known for his character of private investigator Ramashala on SABC1's Skeem Saam, joins Muvhango as Tshililo Netshitangane.

"At first glance, Tshililo is a spoiled rich kid who grew up with a silver spoon. He is strong-willed, hard-headed, and very opinionated. But when one gets to know him better, a gentle but troubled soul emerges. His passion is music and events management, but he has no musical talent but dreams of becoming the biggest booking agent for musicians," the character bio states.

Sinete Nemakonde joins Muvhango from 11 January in the role of Reneilwe "Rene" Netshitangane.

"Reneilwe is a resilient individual, shaped by the indomitable spirit of her alpha female mother. She is an elegant and stunning woman who turns heads when she walks without trying to put in effort."

Meanwhile, Mudi Mudau will play the role of Nkele Dikeledi NetshitanganeReneilwe's mother who is a top Limpopo businesswoman with ambitions to dominate the male-dominated construction industry.

The character is described as "an overbearing mother who smothers her daughter with love and money. Nkele has a dominant character, and she makes her presence felt without even trying."

Returning to Muvhango is the character of Matshdiso, played by Buhle Samuels, who is "known for her manipulative
tactics" and always gets her way.

The royal outcast of Mulalo, portrayed by Sydney Ramakuwela, also returns to Muvhango

Back from Mauritius, Mulalo creates the perception that the prodigal son has returned.

Best known for his scheming, self-victimisation and constant comparison to Azwindini, Mulalo feels that he too should have an important role in the Mukwevho family.

SABC2's Muvhango cast and crew on another 'stay-away' at Word of Mouth Productions after they have again not been paid by the SABC.

by Thinus Ferreira

The cast and crew of SABC2's prime-time soap Muvhango have once again not been paid, this time for October, with actors and workers behind-the-scenes who have stopped working and have started a "stay-away" until they've received their money from Duma Ndlovu's Word of Mouth Productions show.

Muvhango staff on the public broadcaster's Venda soap were told to put their debit orders on hold, with promises that they would be paid on Friday 4 November.

The Kwathole Conexion PR company repping Muvhango didn't respond to a media enquiry TVwithThinus made earlier this week about the unpaid cast.

Gugu Ntuli, SABC spokesperson, in response to a media query, says "The SABC can confirm that there was a delay in the October payment to the production house. The production house has been notified accordingly and the SABC apologises for any inconvenience caused".

In an internal memo from the SABC to Word of Mouth Productions also sent to staffers and actors, the broadcaster said "This memo serves to inform you, the producer, of a delay in the end of October payments. Please be advised that payments will be effected on Friday 4 November 2022."

"Kindly accept our sincerest apologies. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we further note the level of stress that the late notification may cause".

Muvhango workers said they won't return to work on the new season before they haven't received payment.

Over the past month the SABC has been busy with a national content roadshow, visiting various provinces to try and drum up renew support from content producers to try and persuade them to work with the public broadcaster again and to pitch and bring projects to the SABC.

The SABC is trying to mend the South African production industry's broken trust in the broadcaster after a period of large and small independent producers have been left in the lurch after not getting paid by the SABC - sometimes for months - and producers who have had shows abruptly cancelled despite contracts.

Producers who no longer want to work with the SABC have tried to switch to doing projects for streamers like Netflix in South Africa, MultiChoice and the various M-Net packaged TV channels on DStv and prefer to no longer work with the SABC.

In December 2019 Muvhango also experienced a production shutdown for several days, also due to non-payment of the show's cast and crew for two months in October and November, which Word of Mouth Productions and the SABC blamed on each other.

SABC2's tired Muvhango attempts a little-publicised 'Silver Jubilee' after almost 60% of its viewers have abandoned the Word of Mouth show in the past year.

by Thinus Ferreira

The SABC's tired Muvhango is trying to do a cringe-inducing and little publicised so-called "Silver Jubilee", hoping to distract South Africa's TV and film industry from what's really talked about when the word "Muvhango" comes up in the biz - which is that the sad soap from Word of Mouth Productions on SABC2 that should have been put out to pasture has seen almost 60% of its viewers flee in just a year and who are now gone.

In June Muvhango barely eked out 1 885 401 viewers on SABC2. That is a shocking 57% lower than the 4 364 992 viewers the Duma Ndlovu-created prime-time soap still had on SABC2 in June 2021 a year ago.

Compared to June 2021, it means that 2.47 million people less watched Muvhango in June 2022.

With Muvhango ratings on SABC2 in freefall, Word of Mouth Pictures is partying like its 7 April 1997 when the soap started, trying to celebrate its 25th anniversary under the theme of "Riya Hayani", meaning "going back home.

Unfortunately, there's no "going back home" for Muvhango as far as higher TV ratings are concerned.

In April the SABC and Word of Mouth Productions held a 25th birthday celebration for Muvhango but couldn't bother to reach out to include any of the longtime South Africa's media, journalists and publications who have been covering television and Muvhango for decades, or at the very least to inform them that there would be a cast meet-and-greet media event.

Of the few media who attended there were barely any reporting, stories or feature articles about an industry milestone that should have been getting more buzz and media attention.

Two months later and after media complaints, Muvhango, the SABC and Word of Mouth Productions did it again - taking Muvhango "on the road" during June to Venda as the production film scenes with the cast in Thohoyandou, including a street parade and a so-called "homecoming dinner" - and again with the media shut out and only a few media told about it.

SABC publicist Caroline Phalakatshela referred media questions trying to find out what is happening with Muvhango's eyebrow-raising lack of media liaison during its so-called "Silver Jubilee" year to Thanduxolo Jindela at the Kwathole Conexion PR company repping Muvhango.

Even with this there's been absolutely deafening silence and no response from Muvhango.

There's been no press release, no communication to media, and no response or any explanation from Thanduxolo Jindela about why the majority of the press trying to cover Muvhango haven't been looped in about what the show is doing this year or got so much as a peep in communication about the "Silver Jubilee".

'An attack on us as loyal fans and viewers': Furious fans sign a fast-growing 7de Laan petition to try and save the reduced SABC2 soap.

by Thinus Ferreira

Saying that it is an attack on them as loyal fans and on the Afrikaans community as well, 7de Laan fans are furious over the SABC's shocking decision to cut down SABC2's only Afrikaans weekday soap from 5 to just 3 episodes per week with a fast-growing online petition that has already racked up over a 1 000 signatures by Tuesday afternoon.

The financially struggling and embattled SABC that is going through an acrimonious retrenchment process in a shocking scheduling move on Friday night confirmed that it's cutting back 7de Laan on SABC2 from 5 episodes per week to just 3 from April.

SABC2 is also cutting down its Venda language weekday soap Muvhango that is getting reduced from 5 episodes to just 3 from August.

Well-placed insiders told TVwithThinus on Monday that staff working on both shows - on-screen talent as well as crew and writers working behind-the-scenes - are extremely worried since they're set to lose work and income due to budget cuts on both series produced by Danie Odendaal Productions and Duma Ndlovu's Word of Mouth Productions.

Merlin Naicker, the SABC's head of TV, in a statement says cutting down on 7de Laan and Muvhango "is part of our longterm plan to invest in quality local content" since SABC2 wants to bring viewers more shows.

"Serving a diverse South African audience, it is imperative that we come with innovative and exciting content, which will not only draw the viewership, but bring in the revenue required to keep the public service broadcaster financially sustainable".

7de Laan is getting replaced by a new Afrikaans telenovella entitled Die Sentrum on Thursdays and Fridays from April in the 18:00 timeslot, while Muvhango is getting replaced from August on Thursdays and Fridays in its 21:00 timeslot by the second season of Giyani.

Neither the SABC nor SABC2 is giving any explanations for why the new shows are replacing dedicated primetime soap timeslots. Previously SABC2 scheduled the first season of Giyani at 21:30 airing it as the Muvhango lead-out.

SABC2, last year saying that it specifically developed the new local drama series Melody and The Riviera "in an endeavour to expand the drama and comedy offering to a broader Afrikaans demographic" broadcast those shows in the 19:30 timeslot in 2020.

Now the dedicated 7de Laan viewer Jermaine Christians from Lavender Hill in Cape Town has started an online petition at change.org against SABC2's scheduling move, with the petition that has grown to over a 1 000 signatures since he started it on Saturday under "Keep 7de Laan on-air for 5 days #Save7deLaan".

Jermaine Christians says that "as fans and viewers we are highly, highly unhappy about this decision that was taken".

"Our goal is to stop this from taking place so that they keep 7de Laan on-air for 5 working days".

The petition that is against the axing of 7de Laan weekday episodes, states that fans and SABC viewers find it "unacceptable and we highly condemn this action as loyal viewers and as SABC TV Licence payers we have the right to say what we do and don't want to watch".

"It is sad that we weren't even approached as fans regarding this matter, as we are partially the reason behind the success of the longrunning, multicultural soapie. This comes after the soap just recently achieved the milestone of airing their 5 000th episode and are part of our households for over 20 years.".

"This is not just an attack on us as loyal fans and viewers but on the Afrikaans community as well," says the petition.

"This is the soap that taught thousands of us how to speak Afrikaans since a young age. This soapie is known for its large roadshow campaigns to interact with fans and viewers and the soapie is also known for its internship opportunities to help create jobs and boost the country's economy."

"We don't foresee 7de Laan only being on-ar for 3 days and later totally off from our screens because ultimately that's what it will lead to when viewers lose interest. We highly condemn this and will fight this fight until the SABC decides to leave our soapie on-air for 5 working days!"

Among the over a thousand who have signed already are Yvonne Roux who said "Been watching since it started, why remove the Afrikaans programmes?" and Janke Jordaan who said "I've been watching 7de Laan since the age of 2, I can't imagine not watching it. Even though I moved across the country and live in the United States now, I watch 7de Laan every day".

"The SABC should stop making unilateral decisions. This soapie has been part of our lives for too long," said Peter Lucas, with Nasreen Davuluri stating that "If I have to wait 4 days to watch Monday then I'll be really sad. In my personal opinion 7de Laan will lose viewers!".

Michelle Jacobs chimed in saying that 7de Laan "is the only programme I keep my TV on for. Otherwise I can cancel my SABC TV Licence and just not watch".

SABC2's Muvhango cast and crew again unpaid as producer Word of Mouth Pictures blames the SABC for failure to pay the production company on time.

by Thinus Ferreira

At the end of August the cast and crew of SABC2's Venda weekday drama series Muvhango - many with families and small and hungry children to feed - once again went unpaid, with the producer, Word of Mouth Pictures that directly blamed the SABC over its failure to pay the production company on time.

In December 2019 production on SABC2's most-watched TV show and South Africa's 4th most-watched TV series abruptly shut down after the SABC failed to pay the cast and crew after 2 months.

Several insiders told TVwithThinus earlier this week that Muvhango is on a 2-week production break but that they were collectively planning to strike if production were to resume since they have yet again not been paid.

A source this week said that "the production has not paid us and they're not saying anything to the cast and crew", and a source said that "people are planning to down tools when we come back because this is honestly unfair".

Another insider said: "How do I tell my hungry, small child that I work for SABC2's biggest show but there's no money to eat or to buy food? Muvhango isn't paying us, saying the SABC didn't pay them".

In an internal memo that Fortune Sithole, CEO at Word of Mouth Pictures, send to staffers on Wednesday and that TVwithThinus has seen, Fortune Sithole said that the production company "extend our apologies for the late communication regarding the payment of salaries".

"Unfortunately our client (SABC) did not pay us for invoices that were due for payment on 31 August 2020 as expected. We have since been in communication with them to resolve the matter and they have promised to do an emergency payment".

"At this stage we are unable to give a definitive timeline, however all salaries will be paid in real-time once payment is received," Fortune Sithole wrote.

On Friday afternoon at 16:10 the SABC in response to a media enquiry from TVwithThinus said that the SABC has now paid Muvhango again on Friday.

"The SABC can confirm that  payment to Word of Mouth production was effected today," said Mmoni Seapolelo, SABC spokesperson.

"The corporation has been using relevant channels to communicate with the production house to address this matter and is not in a position to divulge further details on this process, in the public domain."

TVwithThinus asked the SABC earlier why Muvhango wasn't paid when it was supposed to, and asked again after the public broadcaster's response, if it can please say why Word of Mouth was only paid on Friday and why the production company was not paid when it was supposed to.

The SABC didn't respond to the specific question by the time of publication of this report.

SABC2's Muvhango the next South African primetime series to abruptly shutter because of possible Covid-19 contact.

by Thinus Ferreira

Muvhango has become South Africa's latest primetime TV series to abruptly halt production after a crew member was exposed to someone who has the Covid-19 coronavirus.

South Africa's film and TV industry has shed thousands of jobs and struggled to restart production under stringent on-set health protocols since the entire industry was shut down for 8 weeks since late March 2020 because of the country's Covid-19 national lockdown period.

Just after local TV productions resumed work, first M-Net's The River produced by Tshedza Pictures for 1Magic (DStv 103), and then Skeem Saam produced by SABC1 was forced to shut down the past few weeks because of Covid-19 cases.

Now the SABC's Venda-drama series on SABC2 produced by Word of Mouth shut down production on Wednesday until further notice.

Herbert Hadebe, Muvhango's series producer, says that similar to The River and Skeem Saam, both produced in Johannesburg, production was halted to reduce the risk of exposure to Covid-19 on set.

"We are prioritizing the safety of all staff members. We will be constantly monitoring the evolving situation and adapting our efforts and responses. We will continue working together with the SABC as we comply to Covid-19 measures and regulations," says Herbert Hadebe.

The Muvhango cast and crew have been asked to self-isolate until further notice and a deep-clean with the help of the SABC is going to take place at the studio.

Muvhango will continue uninterrupted on SABC2 with enough pre-recorded episodes for the time being.

The South African Film and Television Awards drops Sun City, shifts award show back to Johannesburg as NFVF makes changes and gets boycotting producers back onboard.

by Thinus Ferreira

The South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) is dropping Sun City as award show venue with the far-away and expensive money-waste of the past few years that is being curbed under new leadership and with the awards show returning to Johannesburg for 2020.

Local production companies who have been boycotting the awards including Word of Mouth productions and Ferguson Films are once again entering their shows for possible Golden Horns following discussions with the organisers.

Under new National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) CEO, Makhosazana Khanyile, the 14th Saftas will once again be taking place in Johannesburg - this year at the Sandton Convention Centre on 27 and 28 March.

The NFVF inexplicably moved its annual award show to Sun City for 2017, 2018 and 2019 with critics and the TV and film industry who derided the decision and saw talent who had to drive there and often back afterwards late at night, also curtailing easy access and making it difficult for various media to try and cover the awards.

The NFVF wanted on-screen talent and producers to pay a "discount" price of between R3810 and R5566 to stay at Sun City in March 2019 for one night in order to attend the far-flung awards ceremony.

In late-2019 the NFVF decided to scupper Sun City and the huge additional expenses associated with mounting the days' long awards show at the holiday resort in the North West province and to return the awards show to Johannesburg.

The 14th Saftas will once again do a two-day awards show - on 27 March for the various crafts honouring technical categories, as well as on 28 March as the main awards show which will be televised on SABC2 from 19:00.

The NFVF has not yet said whether the important writers' categories will be returned after all writing awards were abruptly dumped without any prior warning from 2019's main show, angering the scriptwriting community and the larger TV and film industry.

"We are cognisant of the criticism that has been levelled towards the Saftas in past instalments and we are keen to show the industry our commitment to benchmarking against best practise," says Makhosazana Khanyile.

"To that end, the NFVF team met and consulted with the Baftas team to see what learnings could be incorporated into making these awards better and as a result, some categories were revised, and we feel we are inching closer to having an award show with proper and continued industry buy-in".

"Ensuring the credibility of the awards within the industry meant reaching out to some production companies that had previously boycotted the Saftas and we are pleased to announce that both Word of Mouth productions doing Muvhango on SABC2 and Ferguson Films producing The Queen on M-Net's Mzansi Magic have once again entered their work for consideration into the awards".

"We continuously aim to improve the prestige of the Golden Horn," she says.

Production set to resume on SABC2's Muvhango after embarrassing 3-day shutdown following the non-payment of its cast and crew that Word of Mouth Productions and the SABC blame on each other.

by Thinus Ferreira

Production will resume today on SABC2's Muvhango after an embarrassing 3-day shutdown in which the production company blamed the SABC for not paying it for two months and with the public broadcaster saying that its payments to Word of Mouth Productions has been up to date.

Production on Muvhango shut down on Friday afternoon after Duma Ndlovu'sWord of Mouth Productions told the prime time soap's crew, cast and writers who were not paid for two months in October and November that the "SABC did not have money to pay them".

In prime time the public broadcaster's Venda weekday soap lured 5.62 million viewers in October as SABC2's most-watched show and the 5th most-watched show overall on South African television.

Last week Muvhango told the SABC that it's shutting down production with no further work being done by the writers, cast and crew.

Leo Phiri, Muvhango's line manager, told the crew and cast in an email last week that "In the absence of a payment guarantee, we have sent correspondence to notify the broadcaster that we will be shutting down production at 14:00 this afternoon Friday 30 November 2019 and we will reopen when we have been paid. Sincere apologies for this unfortunate development".

In more emails Muvhango said that the production company has been "in constant communication with various players at the SABC responsible for our payment but have not received assurances that payment will be made on time to reflect in everyone’s accounts".

Muvhango told the cast and crew that the production "will be shutting down and will only re-open when we have been paid".

An insider told TVwithThinus that "the Muvhango writers have been waiting for payment for work delivered for 2 months already, and now it's going into a third month - over Christmas!" Writers were told they would be paid for September and November on Tuesday, 3 December after they got some payment in October.

Muvhango producers apparently met with SABC executives on Friday evening.

Mmoni Seapolelo, SABC spokesperson, told TVwithThinus that the Muvhango shutdown is not the SABC's fault, that the production had been paid and that the soap has in fact been renewed for another season already.

"The SABC can confirm that the corporation has met all its financial obligations for the current series of Muvhango which will be on air until 2 January 2020".

"In addition the SABC has concluded a new contract with Word of Mouth Productions for the new series of Muvhango which will broadcast from 3 January 2020. It is imperative to state that the SABC pays the production house, which has a responsibility to pay its cast and crew."

On Wednesday Word of Mouth Productions and Muvhango publicist Karabo Disethle-Mtshayelo was emailed questions in a media enquiry through the SABC about the week's production shutdown but there's been no response yet. The production's answers will be added when received.

Production shuts down on SABC2's Muvhango after crew and cast goes unpaid by the SABC for 2 months.

by Thinus Ferreira

The crew, writers and cast of SABC2's most-watched show, Muvhango, has stopped working after Word of Mouth Productions shut down production because the South African public broadcaster once again failed to pay Word of Mouth Productions.

SABC executives last had a meeting with Muvhango producers in a Friday evening meeting after the SABC failed to pay the production company for the past 2 months.

In prime time the public broadcaster's Venda weekday soap lured 5.62 million viewers in October as SABC2's most-watched show and the 5th most-watched show overall on South African television.

Muvhango told the SABC that it's shutting down production with no further work being done by the writers, cast and crew.

Leo Phiri, Muvhango's line manager, told the crew and cast in an email last week that TVwithThinus saw that "In the absence of a payment guarantee, we have sent correspondence to notify the broadcaster that we will be shutting down production at 14:00 this afternoon Friday 30 November 2019 and we will reopen when we have been paid. Sincere apologies for this unfortunate development".

In more emails Muvhango said that the production company has been "in constant communication with various players at the SABC responsible for our payment but have not received assurances that payment will be made on time to reflect in everyone’s accounts".

TVwithThinus was told that Muvhango producers met with SABC executives on Friday evening.

Muvhango publicist Karabo Disethle Mtshayelo said the payment and shutdown chaos is the fault of the South African public broadcaster and said the SABC has to comment.

TVwithThinus asked the SABC for comment on Tuesday evening with the response that will be added here when or if received.

UPDATE Wednesday 4 December 2019 14:20:

SABC2's Muvhango actor, Macdonald Tshifhiwa Ndou, arrested and in jail on charges of alleged extortion, corruption, theft and kidnapping.

The actor Macdonald Tshifhiwa Ndou appearing in the SABC's Venda prime time weekday soap Muvhango on SABC2 has been arrested and is in jail after he was arrested on Friday on charges of extortion, corruption, theft and kidnapping.

The Sunday World on Sunday reported that Macdonald Tshifhiwa Ndou, who plays KK in Muvhango, was arrested on Friday by the Hawks, along with two other men.

The three men allegedly impersonated police officers and tried to extort a bribe of R100 000 from a Gauteng businessman, threatening to arrest him for illegal diamond trading.

The arrests came after businessman Mark Howard, CEO of Isisele Technologies, went to the police after the incident at his house on Wednesday this past week where he was supposed to meet a Namibian businessman known only as "Lillo" for a diamond business deal.

Instead of "Lillo" three men showed up, claiming to be police officers who demanded R100 000 in order for him not to be arrested. Since he didn't have enough money, they agreed that they would return on Friday, when they were arrested by the real police.

The Hawks spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamu, told Sunday World that "We can confirm that we arrested three suspects Friday for extortion, kidnapping, theft, corruption, aiding criminals and impersonating police officers".

In 2014 Macdonald Tshifhiwa Ndou and Sydney Ramakuela who plays Mulalo on the Word of Mouth Productions soap were arrested in Johannesburg for allegedly driving under the influence.

Carte Blanche on M-Net (DStv 101) recently covered a similar story of how "Namibian businessmen" who are con-artists lure unsuspecting people into a trap and then hold them hostage to withdraw large sums of money at ATMs.

e.tv on the remarkable similarities between Imbewu the TV show and Imbewu the Artscape stage play: Simply 'coincidendal'.

Following a case of alleged copyright infringement, e.tv is calling the multiple, remarkable similarities between the free-to-air broadcaster's Imbewu drama series, and the dramatic play Imbewu that preceded it, simply coincidence.

It comes after a dispute over copyright according to The Mail & Guardian that first reported it, after the young playwright Sinethemba Twani (29) from Gugulethu, Cape Town, who works as a petrol attendant, noticed the multiple similarities between his play entitled Imbewu that enjoyed a successful stage run at the Artscape theatre, and e.tv's similarly entitled Imbewu that started in April.

Imbewu, the TV show, is produced by Grapevine Productions, a joint venture between Videovision Entertainment, Word of Mouth Pictures and Luys Productions with Duma Ndlovu and Anant Singh.

When Imbewu started on e.tv, Sinethemba Twani suddenly got congratulatory messages from family, friends and others who were under the impression that his Artscape stage production has been adapted into e.tv's TV series.

Besides the same titles, Imbewu the TV show shares several similarities with Imbewu the play - the first draft of which Sinethemba Twani wrote in 2011.

In both Imbewu's a business man is sterile. In both Imbewu's his wife is impregnated by someone else with his son who isn't his biological child and the man unaware of it. Both Imbewu's explore the repercussions of the secret.

The way in which the man in both Imbewu's discover they're sterile are the same - both hear it from a sangoma. The way in which the men in both Imbewu's find their initial investments as start-up capital for their business empires are the same.

In Imbewu the play a man convinces his friend to sell his cattle inheritance after the death of his father to invest in a start-up business (taxis). In e.tv's Imbewu a man convinces his brother to sell his cattle after the death of his father to invest in a start-up business (oil).

Michael Pocock, e.tv publicist, told The Mail & Guardian that Imbewu the script of Imbewu the TV series was developed in 2015 and that "the similarities are coincidental, and the story of Imbewu also reflects all the demographics of the KwaZulu-Natal region where it is based".

Last month content creator Glodine "Vuvu" Makapela also made an accusation of alleged copyright infringement on Twitter against David Tlale of The Intern that was on SABC3 and Pearl Modiadie of the SABC's reality design competition series on SABC1, Raw Silk that has been renewed for a second season, saying they stole her concept entitled Top Designer she came up with in 2011.

TV soaps Binnelanders and Muvhango reach 3 000th episode milestone; Binnelanders to introduce new opening theme look, working to include on-location shoots going forward.

The South African TV soaps Binnelanders and Muvhango have both reached the 3 000 episode milestone, with Binnelanders on kykNET that will introduce a brand-new opening title sequence tonight to celebrate the production achievement and just started shooting scenes on location as well to expand the visual aspect of the show.

The Venda soap Muvhango on SABC2, produced by Word of Mouth Productions, reached its 3 000th broadcast episode at the end of March, doing away with characters and  bluntly ending story lines in a weird and inexplicable time-jump that left fans confused and upset.

The Afrikaans soap Binnelanders on kykNET (DStv 144), produced by Stark Films with the mom-and-son team of Elsje and Human Stark, will reach its 3 000th broadcast episode this evening at 19:30 on kykNET and will introduce a new opening title sequence - retaining the Jak de Priester sung lyrics and music by Danny Smoke but adding new imaging and some red and yellow tones to the well-known purple opener.

Last week Thursday the Binnelanders cast and crew celebrated the soap's 3 000th episode with a special cake-cutting ceremony at Stark Studios in Fontainebleau, Johannesburg.

"On a daily basis Binnelanders changes people lives while they're watching it in their living rooms," said Karen Meiring, director of kykNET channels. The soap recently got overwhelming reaction over a domestic abuse story line in which one of the female characters was physically and emotionally abused by a lover.

"It's incredibly important for kykNET to be relevant and resonant, and that is what Binnelanders is and that is one of the reasons why Binnelanders, on-screen and as a production, has such a successful story."

"Binnelanders started on M-Net and then moved exclusively to kykNET in April 2011. That was a big day for kykNET. I'll never forget what the management of M-Net told me, saying 'Karen, maybe you'll have this show just for one year because we'll have to see if your Afrikaans programming budget can actually manage.' And that was 2011. Now we're in 2018 and 'kyknet' what happened!"

Relevant stories that resonate
"3 000 episodes later, Binnelanders remains the number one programme on kykNET," said Karen Meiring.

"What more can you say in terms of the success of a show? I have to thank Elsje and Human Stark, Mitzi Booysen (co-producer) and Danie Joubert (director), I admire your attention to detail and the firm hand with which you manage this production, and the respect with which you deal with viewers".

"Thank you for the extremely relevant story lines that continue to resonate with viewers," said Karen Meiring. "We love you because you bring us unbelievable ratings," she joked.

Elsje Stark said producing Binnelanders is a team effort. "I feel humble and proud at the same time," she said and mentioned her late husband Friedrich Stark who unexpectedly passed away on Christmas Day in 2016 and who started and produced the soap with her.

"I'm sure if Friedrich were here, he would have felt exactly the same. Humble, because it's such a privilege to celebrate 3 000 episodes of this series, and proud - so very proud - because of what we've achieved as a team."

"It's not easy. Not at all. When we pitched and got awarded the contract for Binnelanders 14 years ago it was like a dog that chased a bus and caught it. There we were, with this tiny newborn Binnelanders baby, and now we had to nurture and raise it. It takes non-stop commitment."

"The reason that our effort has paid off is because every single care-giver of the Binnelanders baby and their contribution of passion and hard work and leaving no stone unturned that we can say that the Binnelanders baby's upbringing has been successful so far."

Outdoor, on-location shoots in the 'Congo'
"3 000 episodes are 45 000 scenes and about 130 000 pages of script - no mean feat in anybody's book," said Elsje Stark. "And it wouldn't have been possible without kykNET's unwavering support. We will never allow Binnelanders to settle for mediocrity and to just be 'fine'."

"We will always stretch the challenges and set new goals because just sliding by and getting by with little effort will fool our viewers maybe for a while, but not indefinitely. And then they'll move on to better company, more interesting company because there's a lot to choose from our there. Because who wants to be in the company of a lazy, boring presence? Especially the premium that people put on their time today," said Elsje Stark.

"Binnelanders will never be boring or lazy. This child now actually wants to go and play outside. On Monday we are going to start shooting location scenes," she said, with the on-location scenes that will enhance the visual look of the soap.

The first scenes are being shot close to the Lanseria airport, standing in as Africa's Congo where some of the characters are now finding themselves.

"This is a lovely new challenge and it will be happening while we're still recording with the full team in the studio. We can do this challenge and we will. We're raising a child that people will continue to enjoy and love," said Elsje Stark.

Veteran actor Hans Strydom playing At Koster said "It feels like yesterday when we started. Yet it's the same time as from Grade 1 to matric that just flew past. 13 years."

"The success goes to Team Starks and kykNET, and especially our loyal viewers who keep supporting us. We thank you and we're looking forward to the next 13 years. And a small request from At Koster - after 13 years my shoes are walked through. Can I please get a new pair of shoes?"

Singer Jak de Priester sang two Afrikaans songs at the 3 000th episode celebration, with the second a live rendition of the Binnelanders theme song, the complete version:

ANALYSIS. e.tv's show, Imbewu, to rival SABC's Uzalo has a problem before it's even started, as e.tv signals to the media and TV critics how little importance it attaches to its own show.

With less than a week before Imbewu will start on e.tv as a rival for the SABC's Uzalo on SABC1, e.tv has a big problem that is of its own making as the broadcaster is making it very clear how little importance e.tv is actually attaching itself to Imbewu as it signals to the media covering television that the production isn't a show to bother with or something worth spending any time or attention on.

With Imbewu - The Seed starting on e.tv sometime next week, e.tv has done basically nothing to bring the show under the attention of the national press covering television and South African TV critics attention. Who knows why?

Produced by Grapevine Productions, a joint venture between Videovision Entertainment, Word of Mouth Pictures and Luys Productions with Duma Ndlovu and Anant Singh, it now seems as if either e.tv executives are thinking that Imbewu is trash - or that e.tv just can't actually be bothered enough to promote its own show properly.

Either way, what the lack of e.tv's effort and attention to get media involvement with and for Imbewu is now signaling to the media, is that e.tv is sending a deliberate sign in a crowded local TV drama series field filled with many soaps and telenovelas, that Imbewu is not worth the attention nor the time of TV critics and the press - and by proxy not worth viewers' attention nor time.

Imbewu at this stage is probably another one of those throwaway local productions that's little more than a late prime time timeslot filler, not worthy of any significant press attention. If it were, e.tv would have put effort into signaling and reaching out to the media that Imbewu was important by actually communicating with journalists and all national media about it.

If Imbewu mattered - or mattered enough - to e.tv, the broadcaster would have brought normal marketing and publicity practice to bear and would have involved, reached out to and sought out national journalists and press attention for Imbewu.

That however is - by this far too late stage - something that e.tv hasn't bothered (failed?) to do.

It's also important to remember that e.tv's Imbewu even before starting the broadcast of its first episode, had already suffered controversy over things like the anti-Indian group known as the Injenje Yaba Nguni Council that in February this year threatened to burn down Anant Singh’s Videovision offices if Imbewu dared to portray racial tensions between Indians and other groupings.

Then there's also the allegations of sexual harassment that was made by an Imbewu on-set extra.

You'd think that e.tv would have worked out some plan to do even more marketing and publicity for Imbewu given the controversy and many things that's unclear around the show; that e.tv would have organised some type of a pre-show press conference like other broadcasters, would have reached out by offering up the cast and producers for interviews, and would have make screener episodes available for reviews or would have done a pre-screening for national media.

e.tv didn't want to do any of that for Imbewu.

The biggest conclusion to draw from this is that Imbewu isn't of importance to e.tv, since the broadcaster's PR and marketing machine - and the people appointed by e.tv to do Imbewu publicity whoever they are - deliberate took the decision and chose not to reach out to the press to drum up buzz and national viewership support before the start of the show.

This past Thursday or Friday e.tv apparently organised some so-called "Imbewu media launch" somewhere in KwaZulu-Natal but national media didn't even know about it, nor did e.tv's publicity division communicate anything about it at all.

e.tv's marketing and publicity and whoever is responsible for the show's PR couldn't bother and neither beforehand, nor afterwards, wanted to tell and inform national media and TV critics that there would be a so-called "media launch" of Imbewu somewhere in KZN - presumably Durban.

Imbewu is set in KwaZulu-Natal's Durban and surrounding areas and revolves around two rival families, exactly like Uzalo on SABC1. With Leleti Khumalo who jumped ship from Uzalo to the new similar-looking Imbewu, e.tv that hasn't done anything to explain why it's doing  a show that before its launch next week looks like a copycat type show.

e.tv's marketing and publicity and whoever is responsible for dealing with the media on behalf of Imbewu didn't issue any transcripts of what was said by Imbewu's production executives, e.tv executives, or actors appearing in Imbewu. A typed up record or so-called "rush transcript" in the biz of what was said probably doesn't even exist.

There's been no roundtable Q&A, no press release for Imbewu, after the "launch" event, and no basic publicity material like cast publicity images, character descriptions or episode synopses issued.

What did Duma NdlovuAnant Singh and Leleti Khumalo as producers have to say, if any of them attended and spoke? We don't and won't know. What did Ziyanda Mngomezulu, the general manager for content services at e.tv, or Marlon Davids, e.tv managing director, say if these or other e.tv executives spoke? Again, we won't know.

Not fact-checked, but apparently e.tv showed an episode of Imbewu - or some of it - to people at the so-called "media launch". If true, it's sad and shocking that e.tv continues to blatantly discriminate by only showing footage to certain people but not giving national press an equal change to sample show's for review purposes.

It's bad that e.tv and its marketing and publicity division couldn't bother with making the effort to show or preview Imbewu to the national media and TV critics, irrespective of whether it showed some of it at some "launch".

There's been no screener issued either through an online preview service as is being done by other broadcasters and several streaming services locally and internationally for South African media, or a DVD screener disk, or by holding any type of a screening room event for this Imbewu. It's embarrassing.

e.tv also didn't reach out to offer up e.tv executives or Imbewu showrunners, producers or cast members - something that is almost always done by the publicity teams of broadcasters with their noteworthy new shows.

TVwithThinus polled other journalists and media covering television about Imbewu on Monday afternoon. All asked said that they knew nothing and heard nothing from e.tv regarding Imbewu or any apparent media launch.

A few said they saw something on Twitter that e.tv held some type of a "media launch" in KZN for Imbewu but that they didn't bother investigating or giving it attention and that they won't be bothering with Imbewu purely because e.tv "didn't bother to send me any information or really do anything". I won't add what some other journalists covering television said but it was all negative about e.tv and Imbewu.

Quite telling is how e.tv's marketing and publicity approach to Imbewu is different when comparing the like-for-like show to SABC1's Uzalo.

When the SABC launched Uzalo three years ago in February 2015, it invited national TV critics and a group of strategic media from across South Africa for a whole day media launch in Durban.

The Uzalo media launch before the show started included a comprehensive, guided set visit at the studio, watching the blocking and filming of scenes, an elaborate on-location set visit to several of KwaMashu's streets and buildings where exteriors are filmed, round table interviews with producers and cast at the studio, as well as showing the first episode to media and an official evening event launch.

The SABC and Uzalo also gave full press packs to media attending as well as to media who wasn't there more than a week in advance before Uzalo started.

e.tv chose not to do any of this for Imbewu and the broadcaster's deliberate under par publicity effort for the show is a signal to the media that it shouldn't bother much with Imbewu either.

With so many other shows, broadcasters, streaming services and TV channels - local ones as well as international ones available in South Africa - and who are putting in a lot of effort to get attention and press for shows, the bulk of the media will very likely quickly forget about Imbewu before it's even started.

The same happened with e.tv's Broken Vows that the channel didn't want to properly bring under the national media's attention last year in April and was eventually basically dumped and swept from existence after less than a year after terrible ratings on e.tv.

Is Imbewu a "worse", "same" or "better" show than Uzalo? It's not possible to say. What is possible to say, is that Imbewu is, now, perceived as less or lesser or a show, "thanks" to e.tv's lesser effort for whatever reason, around the show.

For viewers, TV executives and people working in television in South Africa and following news about Imbewu and possibly wondering why there's not more about Imbewu in the national press just days before the first episode will be broadcast - its because e.tv chose to do less publicity than others.

The result is that the media are and will be attaching less importance to it and will very likely be giving Imbewu less exposure than what otherwise would or could have been the case.

Actress Leleti Khumalo swops KwaZulu-Natal drama series as she switches from SABC1's Uzalo to e.tv's new Imbewu and add executive producer credit.

Actress Leleti Khumalo is jumping from one KwaZulu/Natal drama series to another and adding an executive producer title as she switches from the SABC's Uzalo to e.tv's new Imbewu: The Seed starting in April.

After contract negotiations to remain on the show for the 4th season didn't work out, Leleto Khumalo has left Stained Glass TV's Uzalo on SABC1 that is filmed on location in KwaMashu, Durban for a new drama series, Imbewu: The Seed - starting in April on e.tv and also filmed in the KwaZulu/Natal province.

Leleti Khumalo's original character MaNzuza that she's portrayed since the first season is being killed off by Stained Glass TV, but Leleti will live again as a brand-new character in Imbewu: The Seed that will tell a new story set in the humble streets in eNquthu and the township of Chatsworth as well as the most-affluent parts of Umlazi.

Leleti Khumalo won't just appear as a character in the show, she is also an executive producer behind the scenes, teaming up with with TV veteran Duma Ndlovu producing Muvhango for SABC2 and the South African film producer veteran Anant Singh.

Imbewu: The Seed is produced for e.tv by Grapevine Productions, a joint venture between Videovision Entertainment, Word Of Mouth Pictures and Luyks Productions.

Anant Singh from Videovision Entertainment and Duma Ndlovu from Word Of Mouth Pictures will be at the helm of the production of the drama series. e.tv hasn't yet announced a timeslot for Imbewu, with speculation now swirling that the show might be scheduled at 20:30 on e.tv as counter-programming for the SABC1 ratings juggernaut.

Imbewu: The Seed will revolve around the family dynasties and two brothers in KwaZulu/Natal - interestingly just like how Uzalo started out in late-2015. "Imbewu focuses on the ties that bind families through blood and spirit, asking sobering and controversial questions that are relevant to all South African cultures," says e.tv.

"A deep and unspoken truth, representing the cultural legacy between two brothers, is at the centre of the series’ captivating plot," says e.tv that says brand-new talent are part of the cast, alongside veteran actors.

“One of e.tv's commitments in 2018 is to invest in provinces beyond Gauteng. KwaZulu-Natal is the country’s fastest-growing province with a strong focus on the entertainment industry,” says Ziyanda Mngomezulu, general manager of e.tv's local content division.

“We are honoured to be partnering with film, television and theatre greats in Anant Singh, Duma Ndlovu and Leleti Khumalo, from the newly formed Grapevine Productions, and look forward to presenting viewers with a fresh reflection of KZN that is all encompassing”.

Anant Singh says that Imbewu: The Seed will reflect the multi-cultural environment which makes Durban and the province of KwaZulu-Natal unique.

The show has the ability to cross the cultural divide and promote social cohesion in South Africa, showcasing a hybrid of cultures in South Africa today. We are extremely excited to be embarking on this amazing television series in KwaZulu-Natal with our partners, e.tv”.

Duma Ndlovu says he is
very excited for this opportunity to tell an authentic South African story. I am excited to be partnering with Anant Singh and Leleti Khumalo as we prepare to give South Africans a new and unique story.

In South Africa, we have not yet had the opportunity to see Indians and Africans come together to tell a story with a social cohesion message and Imbewu: The Seed will deliver this to audiences.
