Former MultiChoice, M-Net and Netflix exec Nkateko Mabaso dead at 43.

by Thinus Ferreira

The former MultiChoice, M-Net and Netflix Africa executive Nkateko Mabaso has died. He was 43. The cause of his death is not yet known.

Nkateko Mabaso leaves behind his wife Mathapelo, his son Tshimologo and his parents Xithlangoma Bob and Lizzy Mabaso.

According to insiders Nkateko Mabaso had been ill for a few months but recovered. Insiders say he collapsed at home yesterday and was rushed to hospital but didn't make it.

Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice South Africa CEO for general entertainment who replaced Nkateko Mabaso after his MultiChoice exit to Netflix, said "It is with great sadness that I share the news of Nkateko Mabaso's passing".

"Nkateko, fondly known to most as NK, was a maverick within the M-Net world where he held various roles and was instrumental in the implementation and growth of our mass and middle market propositions with the flagship being the iconic Mzansi Magic."

"We will always remember NK, he left an indelible mark with his work on iconic productions such as Isibaya, The Queen and events such as the Channel O Awards, DMVCAs and a whole host of others. May his family, friends and colleagues find comfort during this very difficult time."

Nkateko Mabaso who had travelled extensively through Africa, Europe and the United States attended the Naspers' Leadership Accelerator programme in Amsterdam - a city he would return to years later to work in as a Netflix executive.

He received several awards including one of the Top 40 Under 40 by Destiny Magazine in 2016 as well as being named in Mail and Guardian's Top 200 Young South Africans in the media category in 2013.

After graduating from the AAA School of Advertising, he also earned his MBA at Henley Business School and worked for Grey Advertising.

Nkateko Mabaso joined M-Net in 2010 as the marketing manager for the Vuzu and Channel O channels and was M-Net's general manager for local entertainment channels in 2013 before later moving to the director position in 2014 for M-Net's local interest channels, as well as group general manager for M-Net South Africa in 2016.

In October 2018 he became the permanent M-Net CEO after he was acting M-Net CEO since February 2018.

Two years later he was promoted to MultiChoice's group executive in charge of programming in October 2020 overseeing content commissioning for the wider MultiChoice Group. He only worked in the position for a year until he resigned.

He jumped to Netflix where he was appointed as Netflix director of licensing and co-productions for Africa. He was in Amsterdam in this position for a year and five months, after which he quietly exited and returned to South Africa.

Since June 2023 Nkateko Mabaso was self-employed, working in content curation and distribution.

He popped up publicly at the South African public broadcaster's SABC Video Entertainment Content Fest 2024 programming upfront three months ago in March in Johannesburg, where he was a guest.

Gideon Khobane exits MultiChoice for Amazon as next high-profile exec to leave the pay-TV operator.

by Thinus Ferreira

The brain-drain of MultiChoice's high-profile top executives rank continues with Gideon Khobane, MultiChoice's group executive of general entertainment, who has exited the Randburg-based satellite pay-TV operator for a position at Amazon.

Insiders told TVwithThinus that Gideon Khobane resigned and left MultiChoice earlier this month citing personal reasons, telling MultiChoice staffers that he decided to leave the pay-TV operator for a new executive position at Amazon.

Amazon which has been advertising multiple job vacancies in South Africa over the past few months is rapidly making inroads with its Amazon Prime Video video streaming service in Africa and is planning to scale up its e-commerce commercial activities, as well as its Prime Video presence and content rollout in South Africa and across the continent.

Gideon Khobane who joined M-Net in 2008 and was a former director of M-Net's general entertainment channels, became SuperSport CEO in February 2016.

Gideon Khobane served as MultiChoice's group executive of general entertainment for just a year and a half since his promotion to this position in October 2020.

Neither MultiChoice spokesperson Itumeleng Thulare, nor MultiChoice's PR companies The Duma Collective or JR Communications responded to questions in a media query made a week ago about Gideon Khobane's resignation. MultiChoice didn't announce Gideon Khobane's exit.

Nkateko Mabaso who was also promoted in October 2020 with the title of MultiChoice's group executive in charge of programming, also exited MultiChoice after he worked in the position for a year until he resigned, joining Netflix as director of licensing and co-productions for Africa.

Besides Nkateko Mabaso and Gideon Khobane, MultiChoice has seen a big exodus of senior and high-profile executives over the past two years.

Nomsa Philiso upped as MultiChoice’s new head of programming to replace Nkateko Mabaso.

by Thinus Ferreira

MultiChoice has promoted Nomsa Philiso as the pay-TV operator's new head of programming, replacing Nkateko Mabaso who became the latest top exec to exit the Randburg-based company, with insiders whispering that he apparently plans to join Netflix.

Nomsa Philiso who joined M-Net in January 2020 as M-Net director for local entertainment channels overseeing M-Net's channels on DStv like Mzansi Magic and 1Magic, was the SABC's top TV boss until she resigned and jumped from Auckland Park to Randburg.

In response to a media query, MultiChoice tells TVwithThinus that "MultiChoice has appointed Nomsa Philiso as the new executive head: programming from 1 October 2021".

"Nomsa Philiso will oversee all commissioning for the group and continue to ensure we tell local stories that resonate and are loved across all our markets.  Nomsa will report to Yolisa Phahle, MultiChoice Group CEO for general entertainment and connected video."

Nomsa Philiso replaces Nkateko Mabaso who resigned and worked at MultiChoice and M-Net for over a decade in various positions as he climbed the corporate ladder inside the pay-TV operator, including as M-Net CEO.

Nkateko Mabaso was promoted to MultiChoice's group executive in charge of programming in October 2020 overseeing content commissioning for the wider MultiChoice Group. He only worked in the position for a year until he resigned.

MultiChoice and M-Net adds African telenovela channel Novela Magic to DStv for Southern Africa with mostly Nigerian telenovelas.

by Thinus Ferreira

MultiChoice and M-Net will be adding a new telenovela TV channel on its DStv service from today, 27 November, with Novela Magic (DStv 165) that will start at 18:00.

Novela Magic that will roll out in a phased approach and that will be broadcast in standard definition (SD) only, will start in South Africa and the rest of the Southern African region from today and will be available to DStv Premium, DStv Compact Plus, DStv Compact and DStv Family subscribers.

Novela Magic will daily but end at 21:30 and is described as an "African-focused telenovela channel" that will collect and showcase African telenovelas from across the continent.

Series created in the language of the country of origin will be dubbed into English.

Novela Magic will launch with 4 telenovelas: Unbroken, Zuba, Forbidden, and Battleground. Novela Magic will initially have predominantly Nigerian-produced content from West Africa with some content produced in Southern Africa.

"For over 30 years M-Net has been bringing to audiences across the African continent compelling stories that harness the imagination of our viewers while also showcasing the vast talent that is harboured on the continent," says Nkateko Mabaso, M-Net CEO.

"We want to continue this legacy of showcasing the best African stories with themes that resonate and engage our viewers, hence the launch of this new Novela Magic channel."

Unbroken from Nigeria tells a love story between Tivdo and Jesse who are madly in love. Tivdo plans to marry Jesse until tragedy strikes, leaving him disabled after a car accident where his beloved fiancée, Jesse, was on the wheel.

In Zuba, Zambia's first telenovela, an innocent, rural teenage girl must leave her family and education behind to do a maid’s job with a complex, wealthy urban family where she falls for the young son of the house.

M-Net says that although the telenovelas on Novela Magic would have been broadcast and seen on other TV channels before it is now collecting African telenovelas on this thematic channel.

MultiChoice crows about its 2020 14th SAFTAs wins by deleting e.tv - cluelessly culling category winners on its platforms like eNCA, Ultimate Braai Master and films like Buddha in Africa yet listing SABC3's Hectic on 3.

by Thinus Ferreira

MultiChoice that decided to boast about its 2020 14th SAFTAs wins revealed how badly it knows its own content by taking the list of winners and indiscriminately taking a hacksaw and deleting all e.tv wins but in the shoddy process culling content and category winners that are actually on DStv and Showmax ranging from eNCA to Ultimate Braai Master and films like Buddha in Africa.

MultiChoice proceeded to take undue credit for the win of Entle Bizana for Best TV presenter - a win that actually belongs to the SABC - as a win for MultiChoice. Entle Bizana is a presenter on Hectic on 3, a youth strand on the SABC3 channel of South Africa's public broadcaster.

On Thursday MultiChoice did an extremely thoughtless copy-and-paste job of a published list of winners of the National Film and Video Foundation's (NFVF) 14th South African Film and Television Awards.

This was done in order to do an email blast to the press with drop-in quotes from Nkateko Mabaso, M-Net CEO.

MultiChoice hacked through the 2020 SAFTAs winners list like a third-year accounting student deleting budget line-items on an Excel spreadsheet to remove any traces of e.tv content.

Wrongly deleted in the process was the win for Best current affairs programme going to Checkpoint on eNCA (DStv 403). While eNCA is a TV channel from eMedia Investments, the eNCA TV news channel is exclusively and specifically made and packaged for MultiChoice to be carried on DStv.

With multiple film category wins MultiChoice couldn't bother to research and was clueless that the film Buddha in Africa, that is carried and available on its video streaming platform Showmax right now, should remain in the list.

In February MultiChoice first highlighted Buddha in Africa as content that it has as a 2020 SAFTAS nominee.

On Showmax the film is still highlighted as a "2020 SAFTAs nominee".

None of Buddha in Africa's wins feature in MultiChoice's lobotomised winners' list although the outstanding film saw Nicole Schafer win for Best achievement in directing for a film, while the Thinking Strings Media production company also won for Best documentary feature.

The same goes for the short film The Letter Reader that's also on Showmax that won for Best short film.

Ditto for film winner The Fun's Not Over: The James Phillips Story.

MultiChoice saw the win of Ultimate Braai Master produced by Okuhle Media as a category winner as just a e.tv show, although it's not actually commissioned by e.tv but is an advertiser-funded production.

Ultimate Braai Master was scrapped from being included and mentioned in MultiChoice's list under Best reality programme because nobody at MultiChoice knew outright or did a Google search.

Ultimate Braai Master is on The Travel Channel (DStv 179) ... and The Travel Channel is carried exclusively on DStv.

In its list MultiChoice bizarrely proceeded to tack on the non-channel, non-broadcaster aligned awards like Lifetime achiever award, Youth achiever award and others.

After going to painstaking lengths to remove any mention of the SABC or e.tv, MultiChoice included - wrongly - a mention of Entle Bizana, the presenter of Hectic on 3 on SABC3 as Best TV presenter category winner.

In a provided, prepared statement to go with the MultiChoice mistake-filled list, Nkateko Mabaso says "MultiChoice has made substantial investment in locally-produced content, aiming to share our incredible African stories with the world. It's an incredibly proud moment to see these award-winning stories being recognised at the 14th SAFTAs".

"Our 152 nominations are testament to the fact that Africa’s most-loved storyteller continues to deliver the best in local content. Beyond entertainment, it’s just as rewarding to see how our investments in infrastructure, technology and development initiatives are empowering a supply chain which supports local businesses and communities."

"These awards are not only a great reflection of the broad local content offering available for our customers across our large selection of channels but is also compelling evidence that our investment in local content both works and matters. This is the magic that has made us Africa’s most-loved storyteller," Nkatemo Mabaso.

Nkatemo Mabaso, M-Net, MultiChoice and Showmax execs and their PR people, as well as MultiChoice's corporate PR company Aprio were all asked by TVwithThinus on Thursday night about its issued winners' list and the mistakes and omissions.

MultiChoice responded and said that it is investigating the broader issue regarding the information it receives from the NFVF and will be relooking the list.

With an updated list, MultiChoice will actually have even more 14th SAFTAs wins to boast about.

Below is the list as MultiChoice, through M-Net and Aprio, issued it to the media with several wins not included and odd inclusions at the end.

MultiChoice said that it is "The full list of awards for shows and films which have a home on the MultiChoice platform":

Location scouting underway, casting starting soon, for MultiChoice and M-Net's iconic new Shaka drama series.

Location scouting has started and casting will begin soon to find an "iconic" place and actors to film M-Net's South African "Game of Thrones" version as MultiChoice mounts a blue-chip production effort in its own retelling of the story of the Zulu king Shaka that will be broadcast as a new drama series on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161).

Besides broadcasting Shaka in South Africa and across Sub-Saharan Africa on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service, M-Net has plans to sell what it wants to be a prestige series to the world, showcasing to global broadcasters the production quality, capacity and talent that exists in South Africa.

With Shaka M-Net wants to eventually lure more international co-productions made in South Africa and across the continent and make global content buyers aware of the raft of local content available for international broadcasters

Produced by Bomb Productions, M-Net in May 2018 announced that it has commissioned a 12-episode drama series order to tell the story of King Shaka kaSenzangakhona. The black historical drama series will explore the precolonial South African kingdoms that influenced and gave rise to Shaka Zulu.

South Africans and viewers worldwide are familiar with the 10-episode, 1986-series Shaka Zulu from the SABC and Harmony Gold USA that was directed by William C. Faure, starring the iconic, late Henry Cele in the adult Shaka role and based on Joshua Sinclair's 1985-novel of the same name.

"To tell the story of Shaka in this moment is a huge responsibility and a great honour," says Jacob Ntshangase, one of the writers.

The new Shaka will also be filmed across South Africa, with Bomb Productions now scouring the country in search of iconic locations while pre-production has started before filming later this year to recreate the world in which Shaka lived and reigned.

M-Net and Bomb Productions will also cast several Shaka's seen as a baby, at 7, 12, 18, as well as the man, as well as several other characters who will "age" as well and be portrayed by different actors as life moves on.

The casting process looking for the perfect actors to inhabit Shaka and the other roles will be nationwide.

"We are excited about making an epic and exhilarating drama that is respectful of the real history," says Teboho Mahlatsi, executive producer and co-creator at Bomb Productions.

"Research is key. Telling a story of such complexity does not just happen overnight. We will depict the great kingdoms of the AmaThethwa, the AmaNdwandwe, AmaQwabe, AmaHlubi and AmaZulu amongst others, and on this epic canvas, we will see the heroic rise of Shaka. We are telling an African story about a great African empire."

Yolisa Phahle, MultiChoice CEO for general entertainment, says "Starting this journey is history in the making and whilst research and consultation with stakeholders will continue, we are looking forward to unearthing and showcasing the deep pool of talent that lies within South Africa."

"This is a proudly South African series which we intend to take to the world."

Bomb Productions is close to starting the first stage of casting for mostly background extras and will travel across South Africa doing auditions for abashaya indlamu (traditional dancers), izimbongi and izinyosi (praise singers), as well as amaqhawe enduku (stick fighters).

"We are looking for real deep skills - no pretenders," warns Teboho Mahlatsi.

For acting roles, Angus Gibson, Bomb producer says "Previous film experience is not necessary. We are looking to unearth new talent who will perform alongside our great, experienced actors".

However, the search for the actors playing Shaka will be at the heart of the extensive casting process.

"We will be looking for him as a baby, at 7, 12 and 18 years – as well as the man. Then there is Nandi, Mkabayi, Dingiswayo, Zwide, Ntombase and many other riveting characters whom we see at different stages of their lives," says Angus Gibson.

Nkateko Mabaso, M-Net CEO, says "At M-Net we've been telling local stories for over 30 years and this is a continuation of our commitmet to our industry. This is not a colonial telling, this story will be told from our perspective".

MultiChoice and M-Net widen 1Magic access, are making the TV channel available to DStv Compact Plus subscribers as well.

M-Net is widening the reach of its 1Magic (DStv 103) TV channel that has been made available from Thursday 18 April to DStv Compact Plus subscribers as well.

The channel, carrying shows like the local telenovela The River, has until now only been available for DStv Premium subscribers, the top-tier package, when the VUZU AMP channel was rebranded as 1Magic.

The bigger accessibility comes one day before the launch of the new format reality show produced by Rapid Blue, One Night with My Ex starting on Friday 19 April on the channel and in which ex-lovers shack up for one night a cameras roll to see if there's any love left.

"Last year, we announced that 1Magic would replace VUZU AMP to make the channel a new home of entertainment for our DStv Premium viewers. This was informed by our drive to invest in local content by showcasing local hit shows alongside international content," says Nkateko Mabaso, M-Net CEO.

"Now as our own way to turn up the heat this winter and keep our viewers on their couches, we have decided to give an added incentive for our DStv Compact Plus subscribers to bring the best entertainment to their living rooms."

MultiChoice and M-Net dropped DStv subscribers in South Africa and across Africa in the cold when its untrustworthy DStv Now app again crashed with technical issues, as its pay-TV customers tried to watch the start of the 8th season of HBO's Game of Thrones.

Angry DStv subscribers and M-Net (DStv 101) viewers are furious after MultiChoice and M-Net dropped customers in the cold when its untrustworthy DStv Now streaming app once again crashed on Monday morning at 03:00 when they wanted to watch the premiere of the 8th season of HBO's fantasy drama series Game of Thrones.

Both MultiChoice and M-Net were asked in a media enquiry on Monday afternoon for comment as to why the DStv Now app didn't work for the M-Net channel and didn't stream Game of Thrones at 03:00.

By Monday night neither MultiChoice nor M-Net has bothered to respond to TVwithThinus' request for comment to customers, fans and viewers of its pay-TV service and content.

There's been no public apology, nor any statement from either Nicolas Callegari, senior manager for customer experience for MultiChoice's Connected Video unit, nor Nkateko Mabaso, M-Net CEO in Sub-Saharan Africa, about the botched DStv Now customer experience.

Many DStv subscribers and Game of Thrones fans in South Africa who are M-Net viewers woke up or stayed up specifically until 03:00 to watch the 8th season premiere of the drama series but were in for a rude awakening when they were massive let down by MultiChoice and M-Net.

On Twitter MultiChoice that seemed clueless as to what its problem is, said that DStv "seems to be experiencing a technical issue with our live streams but our technical team is hard at work trying to fix the problem".

It's not clear what went wrong, or when it was fixed but it caused embarrassment for MultiChoice and M-Net, inflicted further distrust in the temperamental DStv Now app and caused paying and frustrated DStv pay-TV customers to miss Game of Thrones that they wanted to watch live.

MultiChoice plans to launch a stand-alone version of DStv Now later this year but with these types of ongoing problems it's not clear whether DStv subscribers will trust MultiChoice to actually be able to deliver such a service without ongoing technical issues and when it counts.

"DStv, you've promoted Game of Thrones so much and how it's gonna be live-streamed from USA yet your app isn't working. Your subscription fees are high and this is unacceptable service ... or lack thereof. Utterly useless," said Damien Williams.

In Kenya the DStv Kenya subscriber Lewis Olimba said "Where is the need of paying DStv Premium when we watch Game of Thrones a whole 24 hrs later?".

In Nigeria the DStv Nigeria customer Alabi Abolade said "Such a poor online streaming services from DStv Nigeria. Stayed up late just for my DStv Now not to load live TV. Now how am I supposed to stream Game of Thrones?".

One upset DStv subscriber composed a poem: "For the night is dark, And full of terror, especially when the DStv app, gives you an error".

Another DStv subscriber slammed MultiChoice and M-Net for their poor communication, saying "Still waiting for an apology from the ignorant dweebs handling DStv social media. They ignored customers all morning and tweeted spoilers".

"DStv I literally hate your service!" said Peter-John.

"DStv you really want to piss off a nation by 1) the DStv Now app crashing on the morning of Game of Thrones S8 premier and 2) NOT having the decency to notify users that Game of Thrones won't be available on DStv Now. What witchcraft is this?" asked Kavisha Pillay.

LadyRay said "DStv it is very rude and unprofessional of you to keep tweeting about watching the show through a crashed DStv Now app! Not even a tweet addressing the issue. This is why we'll continue giving our money to Netflix! Right now I'm ready to cancel y'all!"

"And it is false advertising to tell us you'll stream Game of Thrones live on the DStv now app and then not deliver. Worse of all not even care. Check your mentions".

MultiChoice has appointed Nkateko Mabaso as the new permanent M-Net CEO in Sub-Saharan Africa with immediate effect.

Nkateko Mabaso has been the acting M-Net CEO since February 2018 for the past 7 months but has now been appointed permanently in the position.

MultiChoice and M-Net didn't issue any press release in South Africa to the media and only made an internal announcement.

Nkateko Mabaso succeeds Yolisa Phahle, who was appointed as MultiChoice CEO of general entertainment.

Before that Nkateko Mabaso was M-Net's director for local interest channels since March 2014, when he also replaced Yolisa Phahle in the position.

Nkateko Mabaso joined M-Net in 2010 as the marketing manager for the Vuzu and Channel O channels and was M-Net's general manager for local entertainment channels in 2013 before later moving to the director position as well as group general manager for M-Net South Africa in 2016.

"Nkateko has been appointed in recognition of his continued commitment and contribution to local programming that audiences love and watch in increasing numbers year on year. He is passionate about our continent's film and television industry and I wish him every success," says Yolisa Phahle.

Nkateko Mabaso says "I am incredibly excited to assume this new role and for the future of the company. I will continue to focus my efforts on local content creation to meet the growing audience demand for homegrown programming".

As M-Net CEO Nkateko Mabaso oversees M-Net's channels in South Africa including M-Net, 1Magic, M-Net City, the series of M-Net Movies, kykNET, and Mzansi Magic channels; as well as in the rest of Africa the sets of Africa Magic and Maisha Magic channels, along with Zambezi Magic and Pearl Magic.

M-Net says it will continue to drive and execute content strategies that include increased investment in local content and co-production initiatives.

TV CRITIC'S NOTEBOOK. Why is nothing available - or being made available - to the press about the M-Net and MultiChoice executives panel discussion that preceded the 6th Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards 2018?

Why is nothing available - or being made available - to the press covering it, about the panel discussion that M-Net and MultiChoice executives had before the 6th Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards for 2018 that took place on Saturday night?

While panelists like Yolisa Phahle (MultiChoice CEO for general entertainment), John Ugbe (MultiChoice Nigeria managing director), Nkateko Mabaso (acting M-Net CEO), Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu (M-Net West Africa director) and the 3 MultiChoice Talent Factory directors Njoki Muhoho, Berry Lwando and Femi Odugbemi all attended in Lagos, Nigeria and spoke, neither M-Net nor MultiChoice bothered to release any press statements, audio or a rush-transcript for the media about it.

While M-Net and MultiChoice are multinational, pan-African companies and hold up the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards as a continental type of awards show and competition, the organisers don't seem to really bother, or want to bother, with making the effort of properly including East or Southern Africa beyond the most superficial level.

MultiChoice and M-Net marketing exec and publicist haven't bothered to issue any information or even a bare-bones transcript, speeches or just notes with talking points, about the exec panel discussion.

The question is why. Are they lazy? Are they incompetent? Are they not aware that it matter? Are they really so clueless that there are media who find it important enough to cover and who would actually want to report on what the pay-TV provider's executives have to say?

Why make the effort of organising a public panel with company executives, and then not actually pass the final hurdle of communicating properly what was said there to media who can't physically attend?

Some press did attend but themselves haven't bothered to report anything about what was actually said at the panel discussion.

This again follows the established pattern of superficial coverage and largely non-coverage of invited media who annually end up doing very little at the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards although their purpose is supposedly to cover the actual event and things like the panel discussion leading up to it.

The AMVCA organisers and M-Net and MultiChoice should be doing better with media relations and getting information out, and to, the actual journalists and media really covering the TV industry on the continent, but either doesn't know how, or doesn't care to do this better or properly.

The panel discussion apparently would have revolved around how MultiChoice and M-Net is growing original African television programming and investing in films, what these companies are doing to promote new talent, how the new MultiChoice Talent Factory works and what MultiChoice and M-Net are contributing to the continent's video entertainment sector.

The information and the opportunity for the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards, as well as M-Net and MultiChoice to communicate all of this, would have been interesting but also valuable to not just the TV and film industry across Africa to hear, but also to the broader public who might be following what these companies do and what they are involved in.

Sadly that opportunity of course is lost.

There will however be lots of photos of women in pretty dresses as the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards deliberately dilutes, through inaction, the focus of what it can really communicate to the public and the industry about what is being done to invest and help improve television and film in Africa.

TV CRITIC'S NOTEBOOK. When the TV execs go and sit in the back of the house when they actually run the house: A shout-out to the exemplary zookeepers of South African television who keep showing up - and showing up.

The majority of the people who filed into and took their seats inside the Silverline Studios set of Survivor South Africa: Phillipines to be part of the live studio audience for the season finale on M-Net (DStv 101) this week would have had no idea who, quite unassumingly, sat right next to them.

On Thursday evening, both Nkateko Mabaso, acting M-Net CEO, and Kay Ann Williams, head of local content and independent films for the M-Net channels, unpretentiously slipped inside on the rain-soaked night.

Even though they could have chosen or have demanded better seats - in fact they completely deserved front row seats - both of them literally went and sat in two of the worst seats in the house: right behind the back-end of the techno-crane to its immediate right, basically obstructing their view of the centre stage and blocking probably about 70% of what you can see in the front.

They seemed unperturbed.

Both stayed seated here for the full 2 hours of the Survivor SA: Phillipines finale, produced by Afrokaans - and for the first time from Cape Town - until they, together with M-Net commissioning editor Terja Beney exited stage left.

They then all mingled at the music, drinks and food-filled adjacent stage on the Silverlines Studios lot with media, guests, contestants, sponsors and ordinary fans.

Remarkable? At first glance, possibly not. But in reality, within the context of South Africa's TV industry, it's hugely significant and exceptional.

As they and their predecessors have done for years, and quite remarkably continue doing, M-Net's top level executives - similar to America's HBO, CBS, FX and a few others - keep showing up at things where they don't, at first glance, appear needed or having to be.

These executives literally show up on set and at events and they personally visit their channel's TV productions even though they strictly don't have to.

This continued, personal and hands-on approach, is quite different from how execs at the SABC, e.tv, and several of the other pay-TV channels carried on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform for instance, behave.

Although this hands-on behaviour is exhibited by several high-ranking American TV channel executives who remain intimately involved in, and in touch with shows even though they don't have to physically be there in person, it's not something that's really seen or experienced in the South African biz outside of M-Net.

The majority simply just don't do it.

It's also why a production like Uselwa on SABC1 "suddenly" implodes with SABC execs only then starting  to scurry to set for the first time after months, get held "hostage" and don't know what to do or how to resolve a production crisis or gridlock. It's because they've never been there.

In almost two decades of covering South Africa's TV industry, this TV critic has never attended the final episode of a local SABC1, SABC2 or e.tv reality competition show where at least one or more of that channel's execs were also in attendance. Ditto for an episode recording.

For the end of SABC3's The Apprentice SA back in September 2005 I spotted some SABC executives who bothered to show up for this. SABC1's channel head was at the launch and filming of Uzalo.

It's not that they're bad. They're busy.

Beyond M-Net's executives, a precious few other high-ranking executives however perpetually show up and show up although they're very busy too.

They're there for their local shows during filming, for media events, for finales, at channels' upfront presentations and at things where their participation and presence are not strictly required, but that they personally deem to be important because it clearly really matters to them.

Count under them BBC Africa boss Joel Churcher. MultiChoice's head of content, Aletta Alberts. Director of M-Net channels, Jan du Plessis. Or someone like MultiChoice content bouquet manager Alet Bench.

The Walt Disney Company Africa boss Christine Service is equally at home doing a set visit at ABC's Cape Town filmed TV series Of Kings and Prophets as she is attending a film biz investment seminar or doing a presentation to journalists about the gains and reach of the Disney Junior (DStv 309) channel herself.

Viacom Africa boss Alex Okosi actually goes to things - to things where he's not talking and where he, if he didn't show face, wouldn't be missed. And yet he goes.

Earlier this year Yolisa Phahle, CEO of general entertainment at MultiChoice set-visited HBO's Warrior being filmed in Cape Town. Don't mistakenly think that she had to.

And when she sits in the audience for Dancing with the Stars SA in Johannesburg on a Sunday night, after hours it's not because of a lack of  work or better things to do.

The interesting thing about South Africa's bold type execs who go far above and beyond the call of the job description and who continue to step away from their ever-full inboxes more than they have to, are that they maintain a much better grasp on what's really going on, who's doing what, and what the current industry challenges and movements are.

Instead of only peering through the gauze of middle-men PR, they also know the media directly and very often directly interact with members of the press when they spot them.

Although they run the zoo, they've learnt and know the times the hippo takes a snooze and when it's safe to peek inside. They know personally where the master key to the lion's cage is kept and has no problem to go and get the key themselves when something needs doing.

Seen in isolation, South Africa's 42-year old TV industry is big and continues to expand - the most sophisticated on the African continent by far - but compared across a wider perspective it's much smaller and younger compared to the United States or the United Kingdom where also more of an institutional history within companies and broadcasters reside.

As the country's local TV biz continues to mature, grow and add capacity, it's encouraging that there are TV executives - mostly within the fold of pay-TV - who really take their work seriously, and who really set an example of continuously going beyond the basics and bare minimum of what they need to do.

They're the people who not only show up at work every day because they have to but are TV execs who constantly journey ever further - showing up where they don't have to be because they really want to, inherently recognising the long-term dividends it unlock.

They're the indefatigable handful of TV executives who not only truly live their brands, but their work - and who, incrementally, all in their own unique ways, help to make the television you're getting to watch, better.
