How SABC TV under-delivers in languages besides English in prime time on SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 - and why

Thinus Ferreira

South Africa's public broadcaster far under-delivers on the required quota of programming on SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 that it is supposed to broadcast during prime time.

The SABC is mandated by the regulator, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), to broadcast a certain number of hours during prime time in languages other than English.

The SABC, according to the SABC's 2024/'25 annual report, fails to do this and is in breach of the quotas set in this regard by Icasa.

The SABC is supposed to broadcast 18:12 hours per week during prime time in languages other than English on SABC1. Yet SABC1 only managed to broadcast 6:56 hours.

The SABC is supposed to broadcast 19:36 hours per week during prime time in languages other than English on SABC2. Yet SABC2 only managed to broadcast 4:03 hours.

The SABC is supposed to broadcast 10:06 hours per week during prime time in languages other than English on SABC3. Yet SABC3 only managed to broadcast a paltry 3:58 hours.

According to Nomsa Chabeli, SABC CEO, the financially struggling public broadcaster doesn't have the money to acquire and make the content in other languages in order to reach these Icasa quotas.

Nomsa Chabeli told parliament's portfolio committee on communications that SABC1 and SABC2 as the "bedrock of our TV business in revenue and audience underperforms".

In May, SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli said that "Come August, we are launching a new telenovela called Pimville on SABC2, and based on that we will be really driving that audience share back to SABC2".

This didn't happen and Nomsa Chabeli said nothing about it again.

In a media query last week the SABC was asked why Pimville Queens failed to start on SABC2 in August and why there haven't been any further updates about this. The SABC didn't respond to the media query.

South Africa's Top 25 TV channels in prime time under viewers most sought by advertisers

Thinus Ferreira

The list of top 25 South African TV channels that advertisers are most interested in includes eMedia's e.tv, eExtra, SABC1, kykNET and Star Life as the top 5.

The Top 25 TV channels in 2025 in the group of SEM 8 - 10 - the type of viewers most sought after by advertisers because of their consumer spending power - has MultiChoice and M-Net's kykNET (DStv 144) as the number one pay-TV channel.

In other words: Under the viewers that matter most to advertisers, kykNET is the pay-TV channel in South Africa that has the most of them - far more than M-Net (DStv 101).

The SEM index (the new "LSMs") has the 8 - 10 categories as the most sought-after group of consumers in South Africa. Advertisers prize them the most, seek them out and are willing to pay a premium to reach them, since they have the most money and are able and willing to spend money or products and services.

The data of South Africa's Top 25 most-watched TV channels in prime time, according to the SABC's 2024/'25 annual report, reveals a lot about South African TV viewing habits.

In total, e.tv has most of these SEM 8 - 10 viewers, followed by eExtra and then SABC1.

M-Net's Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) has almost double the SEM 8- 10 viewers than SABC2.

Although SABC News (DStv 404) has a much bigger audience and viewership overall than eMedia's eNCA (DStv 403) carried on DStv, eNCA has more "valuable" viewers than SABC News.

If an advertiser for instance, wants to pay to reach consumers who might be receptive to a commercial message, and has the money to pay for what is advertised, it would therefore make more sense to rather buy an ad spot on eNCA, before buying airtime on SABC News.

The lurid reality channel Moja Love, as well as its spin-off Moja 9.9, both snagged places on the Top 25 list, as does BBC Africa's BBC Brit, NBCUniversal International Networks' Universal Channel, and WarnerBros. Discovery's TLC.

The biggest "winner" is however eMedia. It has the biggest overall "collection" of valuable TV channels since its channels collectively are able to lure and hold valuable viewers.

eMedia's channels of e.tv and eExtra in the first and second place, together with eReality, eMovies Extra, eSeries, eMovies and eNCA make the list.

Of course, several of these channels are available as free-to-air channels through eMedia's free-to-air satellite service Openview, which makes Openview a winning proposition for advertisers who want to reach SEM 8 -10 viewers.

Paramount Global starts retrenchment of 1 000 workers, shutters CBS News Johannesburg news bureau with Debora Patta

Thinus Ferreira

Paramount Skydance has started its retrenchment process to get rid of the first 1 000 of 2 000 staffers and it is shutting down the CBS News Johannesburg news bureau in South Africa as part of the dramatic cost-cutting.

While the first 1 000 workers put out of jobs by Paramount Global are primarily in the United States - although these American retrenchments intersect with localised closures like the Johannesburg bureau - Paramount is set to still get rid of another 1 000 workers in a second retrenchment round.

This second retrenchment round will affect workers who are US-based as well as globally.

The South African Debora Patta has been the famous face of CBS News in South Africa, across Africa and even on international assignments like reporting from the Middle East and Jerusalem, as well as the Ukraine for 12 years.

The New York Post reports that Debora Patta had signed a new 3-year contract with CBS News in August but has now been fired and is considering taking CBS News to court.

CBS News is reportedly also not giving her a full payout, although it signed the contract with her two months ago.

Recently promoted to senior foreign correspondent for CBS News, Debora Patta has done absolutely stellar work the past few years for CBS News, with appearances and reporting across the various CBS News programmes, like the CBS Evening News - travelling throughout Africa and the Middle East and doing incredible, high-quality news reporting.

CBS News is now forced to move oversight of South Africa and the African continent to the CBS News London bureau in the United Kingdom.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Debora Patta (61) who covered the conflict in Gaza has been let go as well. Paramount was asked about it but didn't want to comment.

Also still coming as part of Paramount's second tranche of retrenchments are the workers possibly losing their jobs at Paramount Africa in Johannesburg, and even the possible closure of Paramount Africa's entire localised operations and offices based in South Africa and Nigeria.

Paramount Africa is run from its office in Bryanston, Johannesburg, with Craig Paterson, Paramount Africa senior vice president and general manager, as well as Monde Twala, senior vice-president and general manager of Paramount Africa and lead of BET International, who warned staffers in July that Paramount is considering shutting down local operations in Africa as the company "evaluates its pay-TV strategy and local channel footprint here in Africa".

SABC revives Soul City and Soul Buddyz as Shayi’ndlela for SABC+ in 2026 with Lillian Dube set to reprise Sister Bettina role

Thinus Ferreira

The South African public broadcaster is reviving the long-running 1990s edutainment series Soul City and Soul Buddyz as Shayi'ndlela that will be made available exclusively - at least at first - on its SABC+ video streaming service with Lillian Dube (80) who will reprise her role as Sister Bettina.

Shayi'ndlela, that means "Turn the tide" is done by the Soul City Institute which was responsible for Soul City and Soul Buddyz.

The new TV production is funded by the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office under the What Works to Prevent Violence: Impact at Scale (What Works II) programme.

Shayi'ndlela has an initial 13-episode order and will launch on SABC+ in 2026. The new episodes will interweave themes ranging from gender and power to violence among young people.

Soul City, fronted by the iconic Lillian Dube, made its debut on SABC1 in 1994 and ran for 12 seasons, with Soul Buddyz that followed in 2000.

Lillian Dube will once again appear as Sister Bettina in Shayi'ndlela. Before Shayi'ndlela's debut, the old Soul City and Soul Buddyz are made available on SABC+.

"This is more than just a return to edutainment for Soul City, it’s the beginning of a movement to shift the culture of violence in South Africa," says Phinah Kodisang, Soul City Institute CEO.

"This initiative will challenge harmful gender norms, support parents, empower girls through Rise Clubs and work with boys to build a safer, more just society for all. We are proud to be part of a global movement rooted in evidence, activism and the belief that change is possible."

Shayi'ndlela will address "intimate partner violence" as part of gender-based violence and will incorporate social media within the 13-episode series a lot as a narrative device.

Anne Gathumbi, managing director of the What Works to Prevent Violence: Impact at Scale programme, says "What Works II is a UK flagship global programme aimed at ending violence against women and girls".

"We are proud to partner with Soul City, enabling the delivery of this innovative project. Soul City is a key partner in generating the evidence we need to build a violence-free future for women and girls and we look forward to continuing this important work together."

"With the generous support of the FCDO through the What Works II Programme, we are able to bring Shayi’ndlela to life not just on screen, but in classrooms, communities and homes."

"This initiative will challenge harmful gender norms, support parents, empower girls through Rise Clubs, and work with boys to build a safer, more just society for all."

MultiChoice Botswana adds Route 2, Abashwe and The Prophet as 3 local films to Mzansi Magic in November

Thinus Ferreira

MultiChoice Botswana is adding three locally-produced films - Route 2, Abashwe and The Prophet - to Mzansi Magic during November.

Filmmaker Afentse Fenny Lekolwane is responsible for Route 2, Johnson Otlaadisa lensed Abashwe, while Tumelo Chaba is the filmmaker behind The Prophet who is executive producer and director.

Route 2, set in the rolling hills of Botswana's countryside, has a logline that describes it as a film that is "a beautifully absurd and visually striking tale of survival, loneliness, and the unpredictable magic of shared journeys".

Route 2 takes viewers "on an emotional road trip that explores how human connection often emerges from the most unexpected detours in life. It is a story about rediscovery, resilience, and the unpredictable beauty of chaos, reminding audiences that sometimes the journey itself holds more meaning than the destination".

The Prophet is described as a drama that "unpacks themes of betrayal, vengeance, and redemption".

"After his father loses a million-pula property to a manipulative church, a tragedy that leads to the untimely death of both his parents, Jacob creates a fake prophetic ministry to exact revenge."

"Yet, when love unexpectedly finds him, he faces a moral crossroads between forgiveness and vengeance. The Prophet captures the complexity of faith and human emotion, offering a raw look at how trauma can shape belief and identity."

Abashwe follows "the emotional journey of a hardened single mother who has long given up on love".

"Scarred by past disappointments, she remains sceptical even when she meets a charming young executive who seems genuinely interested in her."

MultiChoice Botswana, MD, Ms Stephanie Pillay, MultiChoice Botswana managing director, says "We are incredibly proud to see Botswana’s creative talent taking centre stage on one of Africa’s most celebrated entertainment platforms".

"As MultiChoice Botswana, we believe in the power of local stories that reflect Batswana’s culture, aspirations, and identity."

"Through platforms like Mzansi Magic, we are amplifying local voices, allowing them to be seen and celebrated across the continent."

MultiChoice Namibia adds more locally filmed Namibian films like The Long Road, Oppiplaas and Crossover Hearts

Thinus Ferreira

MultiChoice Namibia has added more localised content produced in Namibia to DStv, ranging from films like The Long Road and Oppiplaas to Crossover Hearts and a documentary film about Namibia's current president.

The logline for Crossover Hearts reads: "A new romance that follows a young couple from different cultures who must battle prejudices and family expectations."

No further information from MultiChoice Namibia was forthcoming.

According to IMDB, Crossover Hearts was produced by Namib Films and Collective Productions, in English, Ojihimba and Afrikaans, with Lucia Kim Hamunghete as director and written by Tekla Nakale.

Oppiplaas is described as "a romantic drama about a social butterfly from the city who takes a farmer as a client. You get a front row seat to watch the sparks fly, but do they?”. Again, no more information for DStv subscribers from MultiChoice Namibia.

According to IMDB, Oppiplaas was produced by Skelata and Collective Productions Namibia, with Hein van Zijl as director and Tjiurimo Kandjii as writer.

Desert Films' The Long Road "follows the life of a struggling factory worker who navigates life after he has been abandoned by his pregnant wife".

IMDB lists Errol Geingob as the director and writer, with Desert Films and Collective Productions Namibia as the production companies.

These films were part of MultiChoice Namibia's second tranche or phase of funding as part of its Ombura film funding project to scale up local content production on the country.

There is also Netumbo: A Leader Beyond Politics, a documentary film about Namibia's current president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Sadly, this comes across as a political puff-piece project since Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is currently in office in Namibia.

Netumbo: A Leader Beyond Politics will be shown on the Zambezi Magic and OneZed TV channels on DStv on 29 October.

This documentary seems more like a glorified profile reel than an objective perspective since MultiChoice and MultiChoice Namibia come across and being opportunistic and wanting to try and curry favour with Namibia's current political leadership, instead of doing something like this only after Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has left office to put her entire term in perspective.

"This festive season, customers can enjoy a wide variety of entertainment, including local movies, local reality shows, sports, series and much more,” says Abbelene Boer, MultiChoice Namibia head of marketing in a prepared quote.

TV CRITIC's NOTEBOOK. Who knew? MultiChoice Talent Factory class of 2025 had 2 films - Ditaba and Gogo's Heist - on DStv's Mzansi Bioskop in October.

Thinus Ferreira

Two films of the 2024/2025 class of MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) student filmmakers - Ditaba and Gogo's Heist - were shown in October on M-Net's Mzansi Bioskop (DStv 164) channel.

It's already too late to report on both of these since their dates were 19 October and 26 October - which both came and went - but it is still important to highlight these films, as well as what is happening here that is really bad.

On Tuesday, I saw a mention of these films for the first time and since I didn't get any advance communication or even a press release about it, I immediately asked MultiChoice about it to try and track down information.

MultiChoice passed my media query to its one PR company, JR Communications, which sends out press release email blasts to the media on behalf of MultiChoice.

Apparently, a press release was sent out by JR Communications on 17 October, two days before the first film was going to broadcast, but I didn't get it. (JR Communications apparently also doesn't check whether media sent an email blast from MultiChoice actually received it.)

The result is that a PR company, getting paid to communicate, sends out stuff, that media don't get, the media remains none the wiser, MultiChoice thinks there isn't media interest or traction, people like the MultiChoice Talent Factory students don't get the exposure in the press for their work, and the whole cluster-mess wash, rinse and repeats.

This happens All The Time with content marketing and public relations regarding TV shows and content, with various PR companies who literally sends out press blasts on email with no real media liaison or actual media interaction or media liaision taking place. And it's constantly getting worse.

Anyway, the first film was Ditaba, publicised with the very bad bad image above that was sent by JR Communications.

It's ridiculous that press images are sent out by anyone with logos on them like "Mzansi Magic" and "MultiChoice Talent Factory". Where have you ever seen these in a publication, like a newspaper?

Media don't run these types of images - i.e. media require a so-called "clean image" - but I'm inserting both these images to illustrate how bad it is, and how (unnecessarily) difficult things are made for media to actually be informed about, get, and then use basic information and visuals to bring attention and exposure to something.

In other words, how are media helped and how is the "friction" or "resistance" lowered as much as possible, to try and get media, like the news media, to engage with something and run a story or a report?

In this case, again, you want to throw your hands up in the air out of desperation and ask: Why is everything so difficult and made so seemingly impossible? This is not rocket science.

Back to Ditaba. The MultiChoice Talent Factory Film was described as set inside "the high-pressure world of a national newsroom" that follows "veteran anchor Sizwe, who is pushed aside for a rising star — only to storm the studio on live television in a desperate attempt to reclaim his voice and expose the network’s corruption".

"What unfolds is a tense, emotionally charged standoff where truth, power, and ambition collide."

The Ditaba cast includes Les Made, Gontse Ntshegang, Keneilwe Matidze, and Abulele-Nicky Peterson – an MTF alumna of the class of 2023/24.

The second MultiChoice Talent Factory film, Gogo's Heist was broadcast on the Mzansi Bioskop TV channel on DStv on 26 October.

Laugh again (and cry) but this is what MultiChoice and JR Communications sent out as a visual - the film poster. And nothing else:

Again, the open-ended question: Where exactly in news media do you see this? And if you don't see this, why send this? Are there no film stills, no publicity images (without logos plastered on them)?

The log line for Gogo's Heist reads: "A Soweto-set crime film featuring a group of legendary grandmothers who reunite for one last mission".

"When a beloved granddaughter is kidnapped by a notorious crime boss, these retired struggle heroines dust off their old spy skills – and a few vintage weapons – to pull off a daring rescue."

The cast of Gogo's Heist includes Sannah Mchunu, who also starred in the Mzansi Magic telenovela Gomora and the Showmax youth series Youngins. Also part of the cast are Dieketseng Mnisi, as well as Nomsa Buthelezi-Shezi.

Just my humble opinion but the MultiChoice Talent Factory students really deserve much better than these very bad attempts to try and bring publicity and media exposure to their work.

Amazon getting rid of 14 000 workers across all division including Prime Video, says artificial intelligence (AI) is making their jobs redundant

Thinus Ferreira

Amazon on Tuesday confirmed that it is getting rid of 14 000 corporate workers, a total that could increase to 30 000, saying advances in artificial intelligence mean that AI is making their jobs redundant.

Amazon says getting rid of the workers will make the company more efficient. The retrenchments of Amazon workers are taking place across all divisions, including its streaming service Amazon Prime Video.

Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology at Amazon, commenting about Amazong getting rid of people, told Amazon workers on Tuesday that the mass firing of staffers is part of Amazon's efforts "to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets and what matters most to our customers’ current and future needs."

"What we need to remember is that the world is changing quickly. This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet, and it’s enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before (in existing market segments and altogether new ones)."

"We're convicted that we need to be organised more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business."

Canal+ looking into buying out Comcast's stake in MultiChoice's struggling Showmax

Thinus Ferreira

Canal+ is reportedly looking at possibly buying out Comcast's stake in MultiChoice's relaunched Showmax video streaming service.

Bloomberg reports that Canal+ is working with advisors to look into buying out Comcast's 30% stake in the relaunched Showmax so that Canal+ has complete control of the loss-making video streaming service.

Canal+ and Comcast declined to comment.

MultiChoice and Comcast's NBCUniversal relaunched Showmax in 2023 on Comcast's Peacock streaming platform, but the streamer has fallen very far short of the subscriber number growth that MultiChoice promised investors.

In Africa Showmax competes with the likes of Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, VIU and a few others.

Paramount Skydance to get rid of 2 000 workers in the United States and globally, also affecting Africa

Thinus Ferreira

On Wednesday, Paramount Global will reportedly start by letting go of at least 1 000 workers in the United States, followed by another 1 000 workers, that will also impact and affect staff at Paramount Africa in South Africa.

David Ellison, Paramount CEO, is slashing the Paramount workforce by 1 000 from tomorrow in the United States, with a further 1 000 people in America and internationally to follow.

The first 1 000 people let go tomorrow, represent 5% of Paramount's workforce. By December 2024 Paramount had 18 600 full-time workers and 3 500 project-based staff.

Paramount Skydance declined to comment.

In July, Craig Paterson, Paramount Africa senior vice president and general manager, as well as Monde Twala, senior vice-president and general manager of Paramount Africa and lead of BET International, told Paramount Africa staffers that Paramount is considering shutting down local operations in Africa as the company "evaluates its pay-TV strategy and local channel footprint here in Africa".

The cutbacks at Paramount's international divisions like Africa, the United Kingdom and Europe will reportedly happen within weeks.

Paramount's axing of its workforce comes as Paramount Skydance is making a play for Warner Bros. Discovery with at least three takeover offers that have been made by Paramount for WBD over the past few months.

Nigerian court orders MultiChoice to pay R60 000 to and reconnect DStv subscriber wrongfully cut off

Thinus Ferreira

A court in Nigeria has reportedly ordered MultiChoice to pay a DStv subscriber R59 110 (N5 million) for wrongfully cutting his DStv subscription.

A high court in Lagos, Nigeria, ordered MultiChoice Nigeria to pay DStv subscriber Ben Onuora almost R60 000 for cutting him off.

Judge Razak Olukolu in his judgment, found that MultiChoice Nigeria had acted unjustifiably in cutting Ben Onuora's DStv, despite valid proof of payment. MultiChoice Nigeria's actions were described as "wrongful and without lawful course".

Judge Razak Olukolu ruled that MultiChoice Nigeria was in breach of Nigeria's Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) of 2018, as well as 2022's Abuse of Dominance Regulations, as well as section 13 of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency Law of 2015.

Judge Razak Olukolu also ordered MultiChoice Nigeria, now under Canal + control. to immediately reconnect Ben Onuora as a DStv subscriber and to extend for free his viewing period for the same period as the entire duration of the wrongful disconnection.

Ben Onuora took MultiChoice Nigeria to court, claiming that the pay-TV operator caused him and his family "emotional anguish and inconvenience".

e.tv on 'painful decision' to cancel Oche Media's Scandal!: 'At the end of the day this is also a business' as its June 2026 end is described as story that could 'fill 5 movies'.

Thinus Ferreira

e.tv says it was forced to cancel its expensive but diminishing primetime soap Scandal! and that while it was a difficult and "a painful decision", it had to be done since it was in the best interest of e.tv as a broadcaster.

Vuyelwa Booi, e.tv's head of local programming, spoke briefly late on Thursday afternoon at eMedia's head office in Hyde Park.

e.tv held a type of media event to mark Scandal's 5 000th episode on e.tv. This was somewhat bizarre and unusual for a cancelled show, with e.tv that only old and invited some Johannesburg media and influencers to hear what the channel and certain Scandal! creatives had to say.

Once cancelled and with fast diminishing returns, broadcasters usually no longer invest time, resources and money in trying to publicise finished series it since it represents an unrealised return on the investment from an attention economy perspective.

After some damaging moves and decisions the past year on the sides of both e.tv and Ochre Media that ranged from scheduling and frequency changes to character changes and set and scenery updates in various attempts to try and revive Scandal! flagging fortunes, e.tv cancelled Scandal! after 26 years.

Scandal's ratings started to erode on e.tv to where it now hovers around 3 million viewers.

The Ochre Media weekday soap started in January 2005, with the final episode that will now air on 26 June 2026.

Scandal! films at Sasani Studios in Highlands North, with Stan Joseph as executive producer, Ilse van Hemert as consulting producer, Sanele Zulu as series producer and director Sphamandla Ngcobo. Around 90 people work on the show.

About cancelling Scandal!, Vuyelwa Booi, e.tv's head of local programming, on Thursday said cancelling a show like Scandal! that used to prop up e.tv's primetime schedule for many years"is never an easy decision to make".

"There are many conversations that take place over a long period of time before one gets to a very difficult decision like this."

Vuyelwa Booi acknowledged that many people are being put out of jobs with Scandal!'s axing and that "these are people with lives, with families" which are "not lost to us", but noted that "at the end of the day this is also a business".

Vuyelwa Booi said that for Scandal! "the writing started to be on the wall" - meaning that it was a local TV production with diminishing returns - and "that as a business this is where you are right now, what are the next steps that you are going to take to ensure that as a business you continue to do what you need to do, successfully".

"It was not an easy decision to make. It was a painful decision to have to make," she said.

"At the end of the day, the bottom line becomes what is the best business decision to make. It's very painful."

Grace Mahlaba, head writer and creative producer of Scandal!, said that what Ochre Media is planning for the end of Scandal! in June 2026 "is phenomenal" and that the story could "fill five movies".

M-Net commissions Mpondoland from Origins Productions as new Sunday night dagga drama from 7 December for Mzansi Magic with Thembekile Komani and Tina Jaxa

Thinus Ferreira

M-Net has commissioned a new drama series for Mzansi Magic (DStv 161), Mpondoland for Sunday nights that will start on Sunday 7 December at 20:00, starring Thembekile Komani and Tina Jaxa.

Mpondoland is M-Net's first isiMpondo language series.

M-Net was asked in a media query what production company filmed Mpondoland, where it was filmed and how many episodes there will be and when M-Net responds it will be added here.

M-Net says Origins Pictures are producing Mpondoland with Mmamitse Thibedi and Chumisa Cosa as executive producers, and will have 13 episodes.

Thembekile Komani portrays Mkhondwana, the reluctant heir of the KwaKhonjwayo village that grows dagga and "where the ground is holy, spirits communicate in water, and leadership is a sacred gift from the ancestors".

He is however making plans to leave, while Tina Jaxa plays a conniving pharmaceutical villain, Pele-Pele who arrives and demands that the marijuana plantations are sold to her. That forces Mkhondwana to protect his heritage.

Shirley Adonisi, M-Net director of local entertainment channels, says Mpondoland "can be seen as a celebration of African spirituality, heritage, and the power of community".

"Mkhondwana’s journey is one that will resonate, as it is about finding strength in vulnerability and honouring the past while facing the future. We are proud to bring this unique and culturally rich narrative to our viewers."

Wanting to get an internship at his father Sityebi's (Bongile Mantsai) winery, Ovee falls in love with a doctor Amahle (Masali Baduza).

Canal+ appoints Thomas Follin as Canal+ Africa chief diversification officer

Thinus Ferreira

Canal+ has appointed Thomas Follin as Canal+ Africa chief diversification officer from November 2025, who will be in charge of leading Canal+'s overall diversification strategy across Africa, including MultiChoice.

Thomas Follin will report to David Mignot as Canal+ Africa CEO.

'Secrets, survival and a sprinkling of love': Creator and creatives of kykNET's Appels en Tee on the new family drama's story of redemption and hope

Thinus Ferreira

Tina Kruger, executive producer and head writer of the Afrikaans series Appels en Tee starting on kykNET (DStv 144) on Tuesday 21 October at 20:00, says the new family drama is about "friendships, secrets, survival, reconciliation with a sprinkling of faith, hope and love".

Tina Kruger spoke at the media launch of Appels en Tee, a new 10-episode local series filmed on location in the Langkloof, along the Garden Route and Hoekwil and set in the fictional Paradysbos.

Starring Diaan Lawrenson as Lisa Rossouw, Tinarie van Wyk Loots as Henriette de Klerk as two 1998 high school friends who experience a tragedy and reunite 27 years later around several big secrets from their past, Appels en Tee was produced by Meerfout Films with Berdene Burger as director, producer and writer, and Sunel Haasbroek as cinematographer.

The rest of the Appels en Tee cast includes Ivan Zimmermann, Jacques Erasmus, Ivan Roberts, Neels van Jaarsveld, Rika Sennet, Bianca Langedyk, Moses Williams, Vilje Maritz, Julia Marone, Beata Bena, Sibongile Mlambo and Marlo Minnaar.

"It's a coming-of-age story spanning multiple generations," Tina Kruger said.

About the role, Diaan Lawrenson said "It's not often that you get the opportunity to play more mature, older female characters which are not stereotypical".

"I think both Lisa and Henriette are both complex characters. Neither are good or bad. Both have pasts - like all of us. Things have happened. There's pain and joy. It's enjoyable to be on a set where there is a safe space in which Sunel Haasbroek played a huge role in creating."

"Within that safe space you can play and emote complex women. It's a joy. It's nice to do a role where you're no longer arm candy alongside a complex male character. It's great to get the opportunity to play the woman who is layered."

Sunel Haasbroek explained that with lensing Appels en Tee the goal was "to make the kykNET viewer feel at home watching it".

Bianca Langedyk, who portrays Annie de Klerk, Henriette's daughter, isn't hearing-impaired in real life but plays her deaf daughter with aplomb and learnt sign language for the role.

"Initially, I didn't realise what I was taking on," she said. "I did a lot of research, I've also met a lot and have hearing-impaired friends. The mom of one of my friends is also a speech therapist and she works with hearing-impaired people and I also spoke with her and asked how I can play the character of Annie as authentically as possible."

"I'm not deaf but I spoke with a lot of people, did a lot of research, and Jana the sign language coach, also helped me a lot. I spent a lot of time learning sign language."

Actor Neels van Jaarsveld, who portrays the character of Wessel de Klerk, said "You can watch Appels en Tee and immediately bond with the various characters to such an extent that you instantly wonder how everything will end for each one of them".

"When I saw the cast and that it's Diaan and Tinarie and these fantastic young people, I knew we would create something fantastic for viewers to watch."

Film editor Canya Cruywagen said "In this situation, I was in the enviable position to actually be on set during filming. That helped me tremendously to start looking at the rushes and that was a big benefit in the editing process later".

"I read the script and then I take it from scene one to the last. I look through all the takes, then I read the script again and then I map how I would like to put it all together. Although that's not always how it works out. There are so many factors that influence the process."

"I cut it together, and then I move on, and then I watch it again the next day. Sometimes I think: 'Oh wow, what did I do?' and then, depending on how much time I have, I change some things."

Tina Kruger laughs. "Canya is always the first one who cries since she sees it first. She would send voicenotes saying 'I just cut this scene and it's wonderful'.

Actor Moses Williams said it's great that more series are being filmed along the Garden Route.

Recent Afrikaans drama series lensed here include Netflix's Tuiskoms and kykNET's Juffrou X.

"Hopefully, there will be many more," Moses Williams said. "Previously, people like me had to go to the big cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg to go and try and find opportunities and to become part of productions."

"To be able to wake up in your own bed in the morning and go to a set because it's filming where you live, and to be able to return to your own house in the evening to go and sleep is a blessing. I can definitely say it makes a big difference for these kind of productions like Appels en Tee to come to our towns."

"It doesn't mean that other locations wouldn't be as suited to film Appels en Tee but I really think the Garden Route has so much more to offer and we look forward to welcoming many, many more TV and film productions there."

TVwithThinus asked Tina Kruger about the multi-generational depiction and inclusion and whether it was part of the pitch from kykNET's side, or something the creatives decided to build into the story.

"It's important when you craft a family drama series to have something for every viewer within the mix of the compelling story."

"I think there are other family dramas with a bigger focus on the younger generations, but for us as Appels en Tee writers, it was very important, specifically for this series, to show moms and daughters, fathers and daughters, and older adults and their children, as well as the impact and effect we all have on each other."

"Early on it's the teenager who discovers a letter and it's from her grandmother and she realises that it's her grandmother who did something and nobody knows about this. And it's about how something a grandmother did that affects more than one generation and a teenager today."

"We spoke a lot about the show title of Appels en Tee (Apples and Tea) and the apples represent the bruisable, innocent youth within the 1998 timeline. Tea represents a healing medicine for the present."
