SuperSport is delighted over signing a deal clinching the live broadcasting rights of the Olympic Games in 2014 in Sochi and 2016 in Rio de Janeiro for South African viewers as well as several other Sub-Saharan countries which will be shown on MultiChoice's DStv pay-TV platform.
MultiChoice will have a high definition (HD) SuperSport channel on DStv for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi running during February.
SuperSport has shown the Olympic Games since 1996 for South African viewers on DStv.
The upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi from February and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be shown by SuperSport on DStv in South Africa, as well as Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and other African nations - 43 African countries and territories in total.
SuperSport says it's delighted with the deal. "This agreement continues a long and proud tradition of SuperSport broadcasting the Olympic Games, which we have done since 1996," says Brandon Foot, SuperSport's acting chief executive officer.
"I'm delighted with this acquisition as the Olympic Games is one of SuperSport's crown jewels with each edition proving enormously popular with viewers," says Brandon Foot.
"For the next Games in Sochi, we will have a dedicated 24-hour HD channel, while the 2016 Games will enjoy multi-channel coverage, including magazine shows, highlights and much more," says Brandon Foot.
The SuperSport deal allows MultiChoice to broadcast the Olympic Games over mobile devices and the internet in South Africa and the other Sub-Saharan countries.
