'Ooh, so much reverence, ooh so much respect': Canal+ and PSL's Irvin Khoza glaze each other after a meeting on how important South African football remains for DStv

by Thinus Ferreira

Although Canal+ Africa is busy with aggressive cost-cutting that also affects content it will continue to pay a lot of money to secure sports content and specifically football from South Africa's Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Canal+ says Canal+ executives have met with the PSL "for talks". Dr Irvin Khoza, PSL chairman is also commenting about the "productive talks".

MultiChoice's involvement with the PSL stretches back to 2007, when SuperSport took over the contract from the SABC, which could no longer afford it.

In a new supplied statement, Dr Irvin Khoza spouts nothing but prepared corporate-speak jibberish - the type of banal statements that make workers fall asleep in powerpoint presentations.

"This cascading effect sustains an ongoing national conversation that reaches across communities and generations, permeating age, gender, affiliations and geography. Over time, the PSL has evolved beyond a schedule of fixtures into a cultural infrastructure — a shared national platform through which stories are told, identities are expressed and moments are collectively experienced. Our responsibility is to curate and present this platform with consistency, credibility and care,” Dr Irvin Khoza says.

Who talks like this and why do Canal+ and SuperSport and the PSL think this "says-nothing" is something?

It continues.

Dr Irvin Khoza says "Canal+ holds a premiership in the delivery of content, and it is through this capability that the PSL is able to reach the nation at scale. Together, the PSL as curator and Canal+ as the premier delivery platform, enable a national cultural infrastructure that is both widely accessible and deeply engaging".

"The supporters are very knowledgeable about the game and the league. They follow its every move. It is their reading of form, consequence and inter-dependence between matches that creates the cascading effect across the league, as each result is interpreted in relation to the next."

This is the type of stuff you get when you're either beyond full of yourself and is surrounded by yes-people who don't tell you to life in the real world, or asked ChatGPT to string some type of presumptuous sentences together that in reality, is laughable.

Rendani Ramovha, Canal+ director for sports content in English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, also gets a quotable - which is less pretentious than Irvin Khoza but grovelling in its glazing and pandering.

"The PSL is a key partner to the group, and it is important to ensure that we maintain a good relationship with our key stakeholders. This meeting was a major step in solidifying our relationship with the PSL for the long term,” Ramovha is quoted as.

"We have been clear since the onset of the coming together of the Canal+ group and the MultiChoice group that our investment in local content is a top priority. And local football is right at the top of our most sought-after content from a customer and viewer perspective on DStv and SuperSport."

"We hold the PSL in high regard, as it is more than just a football league – it means so much to millions of people across the continent, who invest their time, money and emotions into what happens on and off the pitch."

"The meeting was to demonstrate the respect and reverence that is held towards one of the biggest leagues, not just in Africa, but in the world. We also look at the PSL as the perfect platform to innovate our broadcast offering, ever looking to improve our product and to give viewers and customers more value.”

Dr Irvin Khoza "concluded" that apparently "some smaller crowd sizes did not truly reflect the topical nature of PSL football in everyday conversation among millions of football followers in South Africa".

"Every PSL match carries value, irrespective of the number of spectators in the stadium. Each match's true significance lies in its consequence within the league. Every supporter in attendance is matched by millions engaging from homes, workplaces, transit and social spaces across the country."

To quote Miranda Priestly: "Groundbreaking."

Canal+ Signs Multi-year Renewal with South African Rugby Union for Domestic Rugby, Springbok Women and Junior Matches to Remain on SuperSport

by Thinus Ferreira

France's Canal+ has signed a new multi-year renewal deal with SA Rugby to keep all of the South African Rugby Union's (Saru) domestic competitions, Springbok women and junior age-group matches on MultiChoice's SuperSport in sub-Saharan Africa.

It is the first sports content contract Canal+ has signed with a South African sports federation body since it took over MultiChoice in September 2025.

Neither Canal+ Africa nor Saru disclosed the terms or value of the deal, nor how many years the "multi-year" contract extension is for.

Sport content, especially rugby, remains a crucial component for Canal+'s MultiChoice to try and limit DStv cord-cutting and churn, with Canal+ trying to win back millions of DStv subscribers who have abandoned the traditional pay-TV operator over the past three years.

"As promised we are doubling down on our investment in local content, including the sports content that matters the most to people on the continent," says David Mignot, Canal+ Africa CEO, in a statement.

"In the South African market, rugby has grown into becoming a part of the national psyche – as evidenced by the national euphoria that erupted each time the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup."

Mark Alexander, Saru president, says "We are very happy to have concluded our first agreement with the MultiChoice Group and Canal+ group after a thorough and extensive series of engagements."

"They have demonstrated a shared understanding of the importance of rugby to the South African public and we trust this is the first of many such agreements."

Rian Oberholzer, SA Rugby CEO, says "Broadcasting rights are fundamental to the health and sustainability of sport in South Africa and rugby is no different".

"SuperSport has been a long-standing and trusted partner to South African rugby, and we are delighted to continue our partnership. The world of rugby and broadcasting has changed significantly since we signed our first agreement in the 1990s but it is a testimony to our mutual interests that the partnership continues to endure."

Rendani Ramovha, Canal+ Africa director for sports content in English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, says in the supplied quote, "The renewal of the domestic broadcast agreement is not just the strengthening of our long-standing partnership with SA Rugby but a victory for DStv viewers and subscribers, who have come to trust us to bring the best sports content to them in our world-class broadcast quality."

"To be able to continue this promise is a proud moment for us, and it reaffirms our commitment to the sports fan. We're grateful to our partners at SA Rugby for their collaborative spirit."

Angry MultiChoice execs sidelined by Canal+ frustrated and fearful for the(ir) future after decision-making moved to Paris - report

by Thinus Ferreira

Frustrated MultiChoice executives, sitting in Randburg in Johannesburg and who used to have final approval on decisions, say they're fearful about the future and their futures, after new owner Canal+ swooped in and moved the final decision-making function to Canal+'s own executives in Paris.

In a new report by Africa Intelligence, MultiChoice executives are quoted as saying they're frustrated and angry about having been sidelined in the decision-making process regarding content and other decisions since Canal+ acquired MultiChoice in September 2025.

According to the report, several MultiChoice executives who used to be in the loop, explained that they were not even so much as consulted recently before the publication of Canal+'s financial results for 2025 that now includes MultiChoice.

Angry MultiChoice executives are blaming Maxime Saada, Canal+ CEO, and David Mignot, Canal+ Africa managing director, for the way that things inside MultiChoice have deteriorated and broken down.

Meanwhile discontent under MultiChoice executives are growing, as well as producers and content creators, with MultiChoice staff telling producers that projects, budgets and approvals are all delayed and stacking up at Canal+ headquarters in Paris where Canal+ either can't or won't make decisions and do final sign-offs.

According to Africa Intelligence, the new Canal+ Africa management structure includes the former MultiChoice CEO, Calvo Mawela who has been kept on as Canal+ Africa president; Hennie Visser as director of Africa operations, and Byron du Plessis who was MultiChoice SA CEO, as a regional manager.

Aziz Diallo now oversees French-speaking Africa, Kemi Omotosho is now responsible for Nigeria, Retief Tromp is looking after English-speaking countries outside of South Africa, while Glauco Ferreira is overseeing the Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa.

Fuming MultiChoice and SuperSport executives say their hands are tied and they can no longer make decisions, are isolated and have no final say with anything anymore, and have to send decisions to Paris and then wait approval from there.

Not only are these executives frustrated, they're also wondering about their futures within what used to be MultiChoice or Canal+ Africa going forward.

Canal+ is shuttering MultiChoice's loss-making streamer Showmax by 30 April, and while neither staff involved with Showmax, or within MultiChoice can he retrenched, Canal+ is now going to offer voluntary severance packages to try and get rid of workers who might want out.

According to the agreement Canal+ signed with South Africa's Competition Commission, no MultiChoice workers can be retrenched for a period of three years.

What is however happening, is that people who work for service providers and production companies making local content for DStv channels like M-Net, kykNET, Mzansi Magic and Africa Magic are losing jobs.

This is because the volume of content that MultiChoice used to commission for these channels are decreasing due to Canal+'s cost-cutting, and because of the end of Showmax as a separate platform.

Canal+ rips away 2026 Winter Olympic Games from DStv and SuperSport in aggressive ongoing content cutting

by Thinus Ferreira

In yet another shocking content cost-cutting move, France's Canal+ has ripped away the 2026 Winter Olympics Games from MultiChoice's SuperSport that won't have any Winter Olympic Games coverage for DStv subscribers at all from today.

Canal+ that owns MultiChoice since September 2025 has ripped away all sports content acquisition from SuperSport in South Africa, with Canal+'s group content officer division that now decides from Paris, France what sports content will be bought and given to SuperSport in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa.

Canal+'s MultiChoice and SuperSport didn't make any announcement out of its own, ahead of time that it no longer will have the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, and MultiChoice said absolutely nothing to DStv subscribers ahead of paying their February subscriptions, either through email or any other notifications.

In response to a media query, SuperSport confirms to TVwithThinus that MultiChoice and SuperSport won't have any 2026 Winter Olympic Games coverage at all for DStv subscribers like MultiChoice and SuperSport had for decades.

"SuperSport, a MultiChoice company, wishes to clarify to our viewers that the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics are not included in our content offering," SuperSport admits.

"Broadcast rights for global sporting events are secured through specific tender processes and commercial agreements."

"For the 2026 Winter Games, SuperSport did not acquire the broadcast rights for the territories in which we operate. Our content strategy remains focused on delivering the most-watched sporting codes on the continent."

"Viewers wishing to watch the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will need to access the relevant broadcasters or platforms that have secured the rights for this specific event," says SuperSport.

What SuperSport is saying is that Canal+, MultiChoice and SuperSport no longer see the 2026 Winter Olympics Games as something that is a "most-watched sporting code" or something worth bringing to DStv subscribers, which is absolutely shocking and astounding.

The 2026 Winter Olympic Games is taking place from today, 6 February, until 22 February, with South Africa having its largest Winter Olympics sports team ever to go and compete - fully placing the global sporting event in the category of a South African sporting event of national importance.

Canal+ forcing DStv to dump the 2026 Winter Olympic Games further shows how Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada and Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot lied to investors and the media when they made hollow promises that MultiChoice and DStv would not lose content and would bring DStv subscribers more content than before in 2026.

Canal+'s MultiChoice and SuperSport already started to remove other sports content since the end of 2025 it used to have, like the Philly's Games football in Thembisa in December, as well as other sports content, with Canal+, MultiChoice and SuperSport apparently thinking that Dstv subscribers and the industry won't notice the shocking content cuts.

SuperSport dumps Philly's Games with DStv blackout as part of Canal+'s cost-cutting at MultiChoice

by Thinus Ferreira

SuperSport has dumped the Philly's Games, with the popular Thembisa off-season that won't be seen on DStv as part of Canal+'s aggressive cost-cutting at MultiChoice.

There's been no statement from SuperSport about it.

City Press on Sunday reports that according to the organisers, SuperSport decided to end its sponsorship of the tournament because of the dramatic financial cost cutbacks that Canal+'s MultiChoice is now making.

Apparently the 34th edition will continue with Facebook live streaming instead of TV coverage, while maintaining its R220 000 prize money.

Canal+ Africa boss David Mignot again hogs the limelight as SuperSport adds CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 coverage from Morocco with various language options

Thinus Ferreira

New Canal+ Africa boss David Mignot again hogged the limelight on Thursday afternoon in SuperSport's Studio 6 in Randburg when he hobnobbed with CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe during SuperSport's announcement that the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 will be broadcast on MultiChoice's DStv with multiple language options.

Thursday's SuperSport in-studio announcement derby was David Mignot's second big public appearance following his meet-and-greet last month in Namibia with the country's president where MultiChoice debut a pandering profile piece of Ndemupelila Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Oddly, and somewhat hilariously, Rendani Ramovha, former SuperSport CEO and now Canal+ Africa director of sport content for English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, was pushed out of photos on Thursday with SuperSport only issuing media with signing and posing photos of David Mignot and Dr Patrice Motsepe.

Canal+ is taking credit for the CAF clinching, noting that it's Canal+ that will show the CAF Afcon 2025 from Morocco from 21 December "in French, English, Portuguese and indigenous languages, following SuperSport's deal for English-speaking broadcast rights of the 35th edition of the tournament".

CAF Afcon 2025 won't be made available on MultiChoice's video streaming service Showmax. MultiChoice will run a dedicated SuperSport Afcon TV channel on the DStv line-up in December.

David Mignot, in a prepared quote, says "Our newly-formed merger with MultiChoice has already unlocked opportunities and benefits for our customers".

"This year’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is a great demonstration of the power and potential of this common ambition: bringing together our expertise to offer unprecedented coverage."

"Moreover, broadcasting this competition in different languages is a strong way to build closeness with our viewers. For all these reasons, our subscribers will be part of the most spectacular celebration of African football."

Dr Patrice Motsepe's drop-in quote reads: "This is an exciting day for CAF and for African football".

"When the CAF Africa Cup of Nations takes place in Morocco in December, Africans everywhere - on the continent and across the diaspora - will be watching with pride. Millions will follow the games on television, celebrating the best that African football has to offer."

Rendani Ramovha in a supplied quote says "We are especially proud to be able to bring the story of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 live to all our viewers in English and Portuguese-speaking Sub-Saharan African territories".

"SuperSport has been the preferred choice for millions of passionate fans across the continent, and this tournament won’t be different, as we will have a dedicated SuperSport AFCON channel."

According to SuperSport, in Nigeria viewers will be able to hear coverage in English or Pidgin. Swahili will be available in East African countries like Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

South Africa, Angola and Mozambique will get a Portuguese option on SuperSport. South Africa will add a isiZulu and Setswana language options besides English and Portuguese commentary.

Springboks rugby test match on 12 July to simulcast on SABC2 after SuperSport and SA Rugby deal with SABC

Thinus Ferreira

SuperSport which has the rights and South African Rugby have reached a deal with the South African public broadcaster for the upcoming second Springboks rugby test match between South Africa and Italy on Saturday 12 July in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha to be simulcast on SABC2 at 17:00.

The agreement was announced at a press conference in Johannesburg yesterday afternoon at the Springboks store in the Sandton City Mall, attended by SA Rugby president Mark Alexander, MultiChoice's SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha, the SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli and Gayton McKenzie, the minister of arts, culture and sport.

Many media said they were unaware of the planned press conference, not informed beforehand, or called to attend, getting only press statements afterwards from either the SABC, or SuperSport or SARU.

According to SARU, SuperSport and the SABC the agreement to shown the test match between the Springboks and the Azzurri was reached to make everything look good for the 30th anniversary of the Springbok's 1995 Rugby World Cup win.

Not a word was said at the press conference by SARU, the SABC or SuperSport about why the first Springboks test match against Italy on 5 July in Pretoria will not be made available on the SABC.

In reality, massive structural and financial problems remain pertaining to sports rights, the cost and acquisition of that and why so-called "big sport" like rugby isn't seen regularly on the public broadcaster.

Despite promises, Gayton McKenzie has so far been unable to fix the problem with making big sporting events available to the masses on television, with either the government or the SABC that will have to find the money to pay for sports rights to these sporting events when they become available.

SuperSport that has gobbled up essentially all South African rugby TV rights, as well as SuperSport, are both under increasing political pressure to find a way to make more rugby available on public television like SABC channels and eMedia's e.tv.

It's unclear what the SABC is paying to SuperSport, if anything, to televise the 12 July Springboks test match.

It's also unclear and not yet known whether MultiChoice, SuperSport and the SABC will block the match from being shown on the SABC2 channel carried on eMedia's Openview satellite service.

In a SARU statement, Mark Alexander in a prepared quote, says "As SARU, we are working closely with our broadcasters to ensure that all South Africans can be part of this historic occasion".

Mark Alexander didn't say why only this second test match will be shown on SABC2.

At the event, Nomsa Chabeli said "We extend our deepest appreciation to SARU and SuperSport for enabling this collaborative agreement".

"This partnership is testament to one thing: To the power of shared purpose where commercial imperatives and public interest converge to serve a higher calling and that is nation building."

Rendani Ramovha, in a statement from SuperSport, says "SuperSport is pleased to be able to contribute to the country's celebration of 30 years of Springbok excellence since that unforgettable moment in 1995."

SuperSport dumps its SuperSport United football club after 31 years, offloads it to Siwelele FC as it's now deemed a 'non-core' business in Canal+'s MultiChoice takeover

by Thinus Ferreira

SuperSport has dumped its SuperSport United football club that was part of South Africa's Premier Soccer League (PSL) after 31 years, offloading it to Siwelele Football Club.

The move comes as France's Canal+ is getting ready to take over MultiChoice in a billion rand buyout and with Canal+ executives saying they believe MultiChoice has too many brands and are involved in "non-core" business activities.

Calvin Lee John, a business associate of Gayton McKenzie who is South Africa's minister of sport, is behind the purchase of SuperSport United through Siwelele FC.

SuperSport on Thursday afternoon in a terse statement confirmed that it's dumping SuperSport United, with SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha noting that neither SuperSport nor MultiChoice will talk about it "out of respect" for the PSL's "executive committee processes".

SuperSport United, wholly owned until now by SuperSport, is based in Atteridgeville in Gauteng and was founded 31 years ago in 1994.

SuperSport United had a professional football team, as well as various youth academy teams in the SuperSport United Youth Academy, with this youth academy widely seen as one of the best in South Africa

SuperSport United won the Premiership three times in the 2007-2008 season, as well as in the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons.

Rendani Ramovha says SuperSport is dumping SuperSport United because "Shifts in the market, as well as the need to innovate in accordance with our core business, have necessitated focused direction to allow SuperSport to remain the best sports content provider on the continent and a leader in broadcast innovation".

Calvin Le John, chairman of the Siwelele FC, in a prepared quote, only says "As Siwelele FC, we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL."

"SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon, should we get the final vote of approval from the PSL executive committee."

SuperSport presenter Phumlani Msibi known for 'Coach, thoughts please?' dead at 57 after short illness

Thinus Ferreira

The SuperSport presenter, commentator and anchor Phumlani Msibi died on Friday after a short illness. He was 57.

SuperSport said in a statement it is "sadly mourning the loss of its legendary football and boxing commentator, presenter and anchor, Phumlani Msibi, who died on Friday, 20 June 2025, after a short illness at the age of 57"

Phumlani Msibi was born 15 December 1967 in Durban. In his decades-long and storied broadcasting career, his phrase, "Coach, thoughts please?" upped the intrigue for viewers in post-match interviews and became iconic in the football fraternity, SuperSport said in a tribute.

Phumlani Msibi who worked at the SABC, started at SuperSport as a ring announcer with the late boxing promoter, Mzi Mnguni, in the late 1990s before becoming a seasoned boxing commentator, becoming the first to commentate in isiZulu and English on SuperSport.

He soon embedded himself in the football sphere, becoming one of the faces and voices of football on SuperSport following the acquisition of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) broadcast rights in 2007.

This proved a pivotal point in his career, whereby Phumlani Msibi grew his repertoire, immersing himself in all things football on SuperSport, whether live or on magazine programming.

According to SuperSport, "his clever use of language, whether isiZulu or English, endeared him to viewers across the continent, while his humility made his interviewees comfortable in front of camera".

He became SuperSport's "Mr Versatile", featuring on popular football magazine shows, Super Saturday and Soccer Africa, as well as doing his bespoke storytelling through Mzansi Legends, where he interviewed people such as Dr Irvin Khoza, the PSL and Orlando Pirates Chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung Senior, Chairman of Kaizer Chiefs, the late Thomas Madigage and many others.

Rendani Ramovha, SuperSport CEO, in the statement, says Phumlani Msibi "was one of the most beloved sports commentators SuperSport has ever had. He had a reputation as an outstanding professional, well-respected by his peers and colleagues and a respected family man".

"On behalf of SuperSport and the MultiChoice family, we'd like to express our heartfelt condolences to the Msibi family following this great loss."

"Msibi's loss will be felt not just by the broadcaster and football fraternity but by the whole sporting community at large. We are gravely saddened by his passing."

SuperSport drops broadcasting rights for Zambia Super League

by Thinus Ferreira

SuperSport has dropped the broadcasting rights for Zambia Super League and will not renew it after the end of the current 2024/25 season in May.

Zambia is one of the countries, like Nigeria, where MultiChoice Africa is battling to try and stem DStv subscriber losses in weakened African economies ravaged by extreme inflation and sliding local currencies.

SuperSport in a statement notes that in its "quest to grow Zambian domestic football, made considerable investments into the league and the football community, as well as upskilling local talent, which also grew the capacity of the country's live sports broadcast industry – ensuring production teams consisted of a majority of Zambian citizens".

SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha, in a prepared quote, says "This partnership with the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is one we are very proud of".

"SuperSport has invested considerably in the upliftment of Zambian and African football as a whole. We remain Africa's biggest broadcaster and we are proud of the contribution we have made to Zambian football and the growth of live sports broadcasting as an industry in the country."

"Looking back from where we started in 2007, and with the skills we have imparted to the local economy, sportspeople and the community, we believe we are leaving the league in a better place."

Andrew Kamanga, FAZ president, in the same statement, says "We understand that the global industry changes, in addition to local socio-economic factors such as rising costs and load-shedding have impacted the MultiChoice and SuperSport business".

"Although the 18-year broadcast rights partnership concludes at the end of the current 2024/25 Zambia Super League season in May, we appreciate the professional manner in which the matter has been handled by both entities."

SuperSport says besides the statement with prepared quotes it "will not be making any further statements on this matter at this time".

MultiChoice to supply curated SuperSport Schools streaming channel to SABC+

by Thinus Ferreira

In a new deal between MultiChoice and South Africa's public broadcaster, curated content from SuperSport's SuperSport Schools will be funnelled to SABC+ as a SuperSport Schools streaming channel from 8 February.

Neither MultiChoice or SuperSport, nor the SABC is willing to say how much the public broadcaster is paying for carriage of the SuperSport Schools streaming channel.

The new SuperSport Schools streaming contract between SuperSport and the SABC is part of a concerted broader effort by specifically MultiChoice to improve and strengthen a commercial relationship with the public broadcaster, and through it to solidify the SABC's stance as an ally against eMedia's e.tv and its Openview satellite platform.

In future negotiations over - as well as deals for - the sublicensing of big-ticket sports content from SuperSport, it is important for MultiChoice and SuperSport that the SABC takes their side - or at the very least remain silent and neutral - if any three-way sublicensing carriage conflicts break out between MultiChoice, eMedia and the SABC like it did in 2024.

The SuperSport Schools streaming channel on SABC+ will carry a selection of content from SuperSport Schools that filmed over 60 000 school matches in 2024 across a variety of sports disciplines.

The channel will showcase a diverse range of schools and youth sport, including football, netball, rugby, athletics, hockey and basketball.

SuperSport Schools has more than a million registered users with some of the content that has been available on it now getting a second window on SABC+.

Rendani Ramovha, SuperSport CEO, says "We want to encourage participation in sports at a grassroots level and reignite interest in sports across all schools in the country. Both SuperSport and the SABC share a common vision of providing young athletes with a platform to shine and inspiring future generations of sportsmen and women".

Nomsa Chabeli, SABC CEO, in a prepared quote, states "We are proud to be part of this life-changing partnership that extends beyond the fulfilment of the SABC’s mandate, by offering South Africans from all walks of life, a platform that nurtures young talent and provides unparalleled opportunities for personal and professional development".

"This partnership allows the SuperSport Schools channel to be accessible on the SABC+ streaming platform, enabling rising stars to gain recognition in the early stages of their lives, which will lead to more opportunities in the future.”

Thandolwethu Bakumeni, head of SuperSport Schools, says "We are thrilled that the SABC is joining us in the promotion of schools' sport".

"This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to nurture young talent and make schools and youth sports a key part of South Africa’s cultural fabric.  After all, World Cups are won 10 years before they are played.”

Keletso Totlhanyo, head of SABC Sport, says "SABC Sport is dedicated to providing our viewers with the best local sports content, and this new venture with SuperSport Schools will allow us to bring even more exciting and inspirational content to South African homes".

The curated content on the SABC Schools streaming channel on SABC+ will focus on some of the popular and significant sports in South Africa, including football, netball, rugby, athletics, hockey, and basketball.

Third season opener of Betway SA20 tournament lifts South African cricket ratings on SuperSport by 129%

by Thinus Ferreira

South African cricket-watching ratings for the season opener broadcast of the third season of the Betway SA20 tournament in South Africa is up 129% compared to last year.

This makes the Betway SA20 opening match viewership on 9 January 2025 the second-highest recorded live opening fixture in this summer season of cricket on MultiChoice's SuperSport.

The opening match viewership numbers significantly exceeded previous records from the first and second season, with the opener between the defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town drawing a record total live unique audience of 382 778 viewers on SuperSport.

That represents a 129% increase from the second season.

The ratings for the opener places the match just behind the T20I series between the Proteas and India, with the league also exceeding the viewership of the IPL and Big Bash games in the South African market.

The opening week has also seen record attendance numbers, with 4 sold-out opening matches and a 79% attendance rate across the rain-interrupted opening 6 matches.

"We've worked hard to establish the league as a property that appeals to viewers at home and those who come to the stadium and these numbers give us the confidence that we are on the right track to keep building on a strong foundation," says Graeme Smith, league commissioner, in a statement.

"The collective support of our franchises, SuperSport and the fans has played a key role in our success and over the next 3 weeks of the tournament we will continue to work together to deliver something special for the fans."

Supersport and the league are increasing the viewership of the Betway SA20 tournament by making certain matches available to lower-tiered DStv subscribers who now get access to certain matches on the DStv Access package that has the SuperSport Variety 4 channel.

"The strong viewership numbers are a testament to the league's growing popularity and the exceptional work of  SuperSport and the League.  This is fantastic news for their sponsors and a clear indication that the league is transforming the appeal of domestic cricket in South Africa," says Tumelo Selikane, Nielsen Sports SA managing director.

South African rugby continues to drive TV ratings

by Thinus Ferreira

South African rugby continues to drive TV ratings.

According to Nielsen Sports South Africa, TV viewing of rugby matches - especially the Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) is increasing, despite an overall decline in MultiChoice's DStv pay-TV subscriptions.

Nielsen Sports SA ratings data shows that from late 2023 to mid-2024, URC broadcast hours surged by 220 hours.

According to Nielsen, 13% of all secondary broadcasts - repeats and highlights - were tiered down to other DStv subscription packages below DStv Premium like DStv Compact, Dstv Compact Plus, DStv Access and DStv Family subscribers.

Increased viewership numbers reflect growth in both a core rugby market and in segments with a growing interest in the sport – specifically the URC, Nielsen says.

Nwabisa Sauls, Nielsen Sports SA commercial manager, says "Our latest data shows the rapidly growing enthusiasm for rugby in South Africa and the vital role South African teams play in driving this trend".

"The rise in both viewership and stadium attendance - up 3% overall according to the URC - is testament to the enduring appeal of the South African teams' prominence on the global rugby stage and its ability to captivate a broad and diverse audience."

With overall URC consumption up by an impressive 19% and a rise of 6% in the total unique audience for the URC, additional broadcast hours and strategic scheduling from DStv were winning factors for fans, says Nielsen SA.

The 153 live URC broadcasts drew 1.19 million unique viewers, and secondary broadcasts added 96 782 new viewers with 31% of this audience who watched on the SuperSport Variety 4 (DStv 209).

Nielsen Sports SA says this shows the effectiveness of a strategic secondary broadcast schedule in boosting viewership.

"South African sports fans are increasingly captivated by local rugby teams. The increase in audience over the previous year, as reflected in Nielsen Sports SA data, can also be attributed to secondary broadcasts playing a significant role in connecting with a broader audience," the ratings tabulator says.

Trying to lower Gayton McKenzie threats on sports rights, MultiChoice's SuperSport sublicense under a quarter of PSL matches to SABC.

by Thinus Ferreira

Trying to lower pressure from South Africa's sports minister Gayton McKenzie who wants more South African viewers to have access to national sports, MultiChoice and SuperSport have grudgingly sublicensed a quarter of the current season's Premier Soccer League football matches to South Africa's public broadcaster.

MultiChoice will allow the SABC to broadcast 51 out of over 300 PSL matches which include 23 Betway Premiership matches, 12 Nedbank Cup matches, 10 Carling Black Label Cup matches and 6 National First Division games.

League matches will be broadcast on SABC1 on Saturdays. SuperSport will broadcast all 240 Betway Premiership games live on DStv and MultiChoice's streamer Showmax.

In a joint statement MultiChoice and the SABC say SuperSport and the SABC "have reached an agreement on the sub-licensing of Premier Soccer League (PSL) broadcast rights for the new Betway Premiership season".

MultiChoice and the SABC note that the sub-licensing deal "comes on the back of strong relations developing between the two broadcasters".

Besides being able to lower the pressure South Africa's new sports minister has put on the pay-TV operator and the South African public broadcaster, their strengthened relationship also serves both in an ongoing case against eMedia's e.tv when it comes to sports rights.

Rendani Ramovha, SuperSport CEO, says "The latest sub-licence agreement with the SABC is another step towards a strong relationship with the public broadcaster, for the benefit of football lovers across the country and the African continent".

"The PSL has proven itself time and again to be the most coveted football product among South Africans and we look forward to delivering another outstanding season of football action on SuperSport."

Nomsa Chabeli, SABC CEO, says "We are pleased with this acquisition, which is another demonstration of our commitment to delivering exceptional support content to our diverse audiences."

Netflix 59, kykNET 58: A nominees tally break-down and why the 18th SAFTAs will be a red and blue letter throwdown.

by Thinus Ferreira

Netflix South Africa and kykNET are the two biggest nominee drivers of 2024's 18th South African Television and Film Awards with the red letter streamer earning 59 nominations and the blue K grabbing 58 nominations.

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) released the nominations for the 18th SAFTAs last week. The awards ceremony was originally scheduled for September.

I've reliably learnt that the 18th SAFTAs has been pushed out by a month because the date clashed with MultiChoice's upcoming DStv Delicious Festival 2024 set for 21 and 22 September and that the NFVF and MultiChoice decided not to put on duelling events competing for public interest at the same time.

The 18th SAFTAs has now moved its technical and craft awards to 25 October which will be shown on YouTube, with the main awards which will be broadcast on 26 October on SABC3 and Mzansi Magic (DStv 161).

While Netflix SA got the most nods, M-Net as a Randburg-based content hub - not the TV channel - got the most nominations.

If the nominations of programmes shown on SuperSport like Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story, nominations from M-Net (DStv 101) content like the second season of its Lioness drama series and Carte Blanche, as well as nominations for M-Net produced TV channels like 1Magic, Mzansi Magic and Mzansi Wethu are added to kykNET's tally, the M-Net division surpasses Netflix with the most nominations this year.

The staggering over-performance of kykNET content - and specifically Afrikaans TV content within the overall number of SAFTAs nominations - become even more impressive when the nominations of Showmax Originals in Afrikaans like Trompoppie and Dam are added.

Media24's VIA lifestyle channel on DStv also have a few nominations (3) for TV shows, further adding to the bulk of Afrikaans nominations at this year's SAFTAs.

Streamer-wise MultiChoice's video streaming service Showmax has 38 nominations, with its Cape Town-filmed Canal+ co-production Spinners largely shut out and snubbed with only three nominations. Spinners also wasn't eligible to enter the Best TV drama category since the lead production company is French.

Disney+ managed one nomination for its Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire animation series, with Amazon Studios that earlier this year decided to abruptly stop further production of any local South African and African continent that grabbed 11 nominations.

The South African public broadcaster got 39 nominations for the content across its channels - including for Primedia Studios' The Masked Singer on SABC3.

The SABC likely could have added to its tally but Word of Mouth Pictures producing Muvhango and Danie Odendaal Productions that produced the cancelled 7de Laan, are two of the production companies that again snubbed the NFVF and didn't enter for the awards.

eMedia's e.tv grabbed 17 nominations, with Cape Town TV (CTV) which was the only community TV channel to get a nod with its single nomination for The Heart of Cape Town in the category for best achievement in sound in a documentary.
