A brand-new poster is out for the 10th and final season of Smallville that is currently on in America and has just started on Vuzu (DStv 123) on Sundays at 17:00.
BREAKING. Isidingo leads as most nominated soap, followed by Rhythm City for the 5th South African Film and Television Awards.
The nominees for the 5th South African Television and Film Awards (Saftas) this year taking place over two weekends from Sunday 20 February, has just been announced with SABC3 soapie Isidingo leading the soap drama category with 10 nominations followed by Rhythm City on e.tv with 6. Shut out is SABC2's 7de Laan which last year won the viewers' vote competition and only got one nomination this year.
The 5th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) will take place on 20 February at Melrose Arch at Madame Zingara's Theatre of Dreams first honouring the non-fiction categories, and then on the 27th February the fiction categories.

What very demanding local soap diva isn't happy anymore with her dressing room? Cue new dressing room probably soon since she always gets what she wants.
Who is going for the black vote with some interesting XXXXXX changes and how it's seen? Did she hit a sensitive nerve after all?
What very high profile person absolutely didn't want to do it, was cajoled into it, found it arduous, but is now happy with how it's going to look on TV? And the good publicity can't come soon enough.

DStv and TopTV: Perspective on the new channels roll-out dilemma in 2011 both pay TV operators are facing.
I said it last year already when I confirmed it as a fact that Sony Max will be the first new TV channel in South Africa (and the first new one on DStv for 2011) but don't go looking for many new TV channels to be rolled out on DStv by MultiChoice in 2011. It's just not possible (and I don't mean it in a negative way).
It's not really new and I only relay information as accurately as I can, but I can add a bit further perspective now after what I was told days ago. In October last year I reported that MultiChoice is experiencing some bandwidth capacity ''challenges'' - and I can only reiterate the facts of this situation again, since I was told so again by very knowledgeable people, and it remains exactly unchanged from what I was told in October.
I'm told by credible insiders that MultiChoice will have some new channels in 2011 but the number will be very limited and that the issue has specifically to do with limited satellite capacity. It's not MultiChoice's ''fault'', there is just not any available spare capacity on satellites available for MultiChoice to ''lease'' until earliest 2012 when new satellites will again circle above us. Im told by people within MultiChoice they're ''extremely precious'' about the available bandwidth the pay TV operator has left for the year. ''There isn't more to get [bandwidth] so we'll play the best and do the best with what's left for this year.''
Meanwhile TopTV's main problem regarding new channels? Also nothing new, but the answer is MultiChoice. I won't bore with the technical stuff and it's actually several complex components all at work at the exact same time, but exclusivity agreements, territory agreements (as well as the lack thereof), clearance rights (and the lack thereof and the lack of time and the arduous process it takes to clear content on channels), price and money, distributor relationships (and in certain cases the lack thereof) are all specific factors I'm told by insiders are what's making things difficult for On Digital Media (ODM) to secure new channels.
''Would have if they could have,'' says an insider about TopTV constantly having to reset and adjust its channel roll-out ''calendar'' [my quotation marks] and not having added premium channels earlier. ''It's all tied up in one convoluted way or another,'' another insider tells me. ''People have no idea of the laborious process involved in getting a channel. The mere negotiation process is a mini United Nations,'' says this person. ''Talk to someone who's done shopping mall space lease management. Who's in, who's out, who stays, how much, how big, where, and how much can the parking tickets go up? And there's always the chain that wants to close or change or move their branch. That's nothing compared to this [acquiring channels].''
OPINION. If you think January has so far been bad for the SABC, wait for the next 11 months of 2011.
With the South Gauteng Court that ruled yesterday evening that the SABC indeed did manipulate its news and distorted news coverage, can the SABC's reputation - already in tatters - sink any lower?
Where are we? There is a lack of corporate control and corporate management at the SABC. Lack of vision. Lack of a full SABC board. Lack of an accountable and responsive chairperson. There is a lack of a group CEO since the previous one was suspended, then left this month after he agreed to resign if he gets a payout. The SABC will be out of money by September and again go begging to the government. There is a general lack of trust that the SABC can do anything right if left on its own.
Daily, there is a barrage of bad news about the SABC. The public broadcaster has become a laughing stock, its credibility tainted, its programming weak, its debt big, and its reputation sadly in tatters. And its not even February yet.

M-Net just announced the national audition dates for the 7th season of Idols that will be held for this reality show in various stadium venues across South Africa this year.
Contestants who want to enter the 7th season of Idols need to bring their ID documents with them, must be available to return to the same venue the following day if asked and must be between 16 and 30 years of age.
Idols auditions phase will kick off in Cape Town at the CTICC (Saturday, 12 February), Polokwane at the Peter Mokaba Stadium (Saturday, 26 February), Durban at the Moses Mabhida Stadium (Saturday, 5 March), Soweto at the Dobsonville Stadium (Saturday, 26 March) and Johannesburg at Montecasino (Saturday, 2 April).

Confused parents are alerting me that this is what their children are asking them today since it appears that Sonic the Hedgehog is broadcast on KidsCo (DStv 308 / TopTV 255) in. . . Chinese.

Well. We are living in the Chinese century. Kidding aside, I've asked and MultiChoice was super speedy with a response. MultiChoice tells me that its command centre are aware of the problem and are sorting it out. ''Current shows are in English now,'' MultiChoice tells me.

LUCHA LIBRE! Beefy half naked wrestlers and a wrestling ring helps to spice up DStv's max-tastic Sony Max channel launch.
Since the new Sony Max (DStv 126) channel that kicks off on 1 February at 21:00 will bring South African viewers some CMML: Arena Mexico wrestling for the first time - Mexican wrestling where the wrestlers fight with masks - the official launch of the new Sony Max channel earlier this evening sported some studly guys with very impressive physiques.
They're not really wrestlers but the toned and sculpted six pack brigade stood next to the red carpet welcoming guests to the Sony Max launch. Later two of them got into a real wrestling ring (impressive!) that was set up on stage, and later they walked around with big silver trays (it must have been heavy which is why they were asked) serving really great food.
