Moja Love won't cancel homophobic Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored on DStv but finally apologises after being ordered to do so by MultiChoice, says channel will put measures in place to prevent discriminatory content from making it to air.

After urgent discussions with MultiChoice the Moja Love (DStv 157) has been ordered to apologise for a shocking lapse of homophobic content that made it to air in Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored on the channel supplied to DStv, with Moja Love in a statement on Thursday afternoon saying it's now implementing steps it should have had to prevent a repeat of discriminatory content from making it to air.

MultiChoice on Thursday morning also strongly condemned and distanced itself from the homophobic reality TV star and dancer Zodwa Wabantu, amidst growing calls for Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored to be cancelled and an escalating controversy about her shocking comments in a pre-recorded episode that passed several levels of vetting at the Moja Love channel.

More and more DStv subscribers and organisations have been calling for MultiChoice to cancel Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored following the entertainer's homophobic remarks in Saturday's pre-recorded episode.

Calls to can the Moja Love show comes alongside a growing online petition with thousands of signatures at Change.org and complaints that have been laid with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA).

In a statement on Thursday Moja Love says "We do not condone any form of discrimination
through sexuality, religion, gender and culture" and that the channel from Siyaya TV accept responsibility for the oversight that occured in Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored".

Moja Love however doesn't plan to suspend Zodwa Wabantu or to cancel or remove the show from its schedule.

"We convey our sincere and profound regret that these utterances have caused. We have placed
internal measures to ensure that such an incident does not occur in the future."

"Our channel talent will be given the proper tools and guidelines to enable them to understand the various dynamics that make up our society. We are currently working with a LGBTI rights organisation, Iranti, on remedial actions and to ensure that education around the issue is promoted.

The MultiChoice Group in a statement said on Thursday that it "distances itself from the commentary made by Zodwa Wabantu on independent channel Moja Love. It is important to note that, as Moja Love is an independent third-party channel, MultiChoice Group does not exercise editorial control over their broadcast".

"MultiChoice strongly condemns any acts of discrimination. As such we distance ourselves from the comments made by Zodwa Wabantu. We welcome a society where freedom of speech and diversity is celebrated, and we take a stand against discrimination in all instances."

On Wednesday the LGBTQ advocacy group, Johannesburg Pride, in a statement demanded that MultiChoice suspend the Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored series on Moja Love "with immediate effect" after her homophobic and transphobic comments.

The group said it sees Zodwa Wabantu's comments allowed to air on Moja Love on DStv as "disrespectful and offensive, promoting discrimination and encouraging of hate crimes particularly towards the trans community. In our tireless efforts to deconstruct stereotypes, we view these statements as degenerative and damaging to the continuous struggle for equality".

"DStv needs to be mindful of the hate it is promoting. This must be a lesson to all media personalities and influencers to be mindful of how they conduct themselves and what they say," Johannesburg Pride said.

By Thursday morning Musa Kawula's online petition has amassed over 7 800 signatures supporting the cancellation of the show, passing the goal of 7 500.

Musa Kawula said that "These comments are homophobic and transphobic therefore something has to be done. Zodwa Wabantu's show is on a broadcast show which means these comments went through several producers or stages before it was decided that it will be broadcast without any person picking up that these comments were homophobic and therefore pose a threat to the members of the LGBT community at large."

In Saturday's episode of Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensoredproducers decided to include the star filmed making sweeping negative and false generalisations and Moja Love channel execs seeing nothing wrong with Zodwa saying "Gay people are naughty. Name a gay person who has never fought with a girl."

"They're convinced that they have a vagina, they have a penis. We have vaginas. We accommodate you guys because you get to wear make-up and when we, as women, talk about men you get a chance too."

Iranti, an LGBTIQ+ rights organisation, called for a meeting with Zodwa Wabantu and the show's producers to "discuss the harmful impacts the episode may have on LGBTIQ+ people".

Nokuthula Mavuso said "Before a show goes on-air, the tape goes through so many people for approval. Nobody, absolutely nobody, thought 'this is not it'? Moja Love and Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored should also be called out".

Another viewer said "The producers need to be slapped. Why did they allow her to go and attack LGBT+? I think they thrive on her being controversial so much that they missed the facts that her views were discriminatory and bigoted."

Calls for Moja Love to cancel the Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored show after reality star's shocking homophobic comments on DStv.

Viewers have complained, some have made written complaints to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) and a petition has now been started that already attracted thousands of signatures following the shockingly homophobic comments from the notorious dancer and reality TV star Zondwa Wabantu that was broadcast on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service.

In the latest episode of Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensored on Saturday on Moja Love (DStv 157), Zodwa Wabantu's controversial, homophobic comments stirred anger in South Africa and under viewers, including the LGBT community.

The Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensored producers decided to include the star filmed making sweeping negative and false generalisations and saying "Gay people are naughty. Name a gay person who has never fought with a girl.

"They're convinced that they have a vagina, they have a penis. We have vaginas. We accommodate you guys because you get to wear make-up and when we, as women, talk about men you get a chance too."

The #ZodwaCancelled hashtag has started to trend on social media in South Africa, with a petition that has been started to get Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensored cancelled. There's been no statement from Moja Love.

Zodwa Wabantu told The Sowetan that "How can I be homophobic when I have more than 20 gay friends? Even my designer is gay. I was talking about my friends. I am talking about something that I have observed about them since they are my friends. Anyway, that is a reality show, I am calling it as I see it."

A viewer, Khawula, who started a petition, said that "Zodwa WaBantu's reality show on Moja Love has revealed that Zodwa WaBantu is homophobic and transphobic through her ignorant comments she made stating that gay men should not behave like women because they do not have vaginas but women do".

"She also stated that gay people are being done a favour to even be allowed to exist at the same spaces."

"These comments are homophobic and transphobic therefore something has to be done. Zodwa WaBantu's show is on a broadcast show which means these comments went through several producers or stages before it was decided that it will be broadcast without any person picking up that these comments were homophobic and therefore pose a threat to the members of the LGBT community at large."

I think they thrive on her being controversial so much that they missed the facts that her views were discriminatory and bigoted."

petition that was started on Change.org had over 5 800 signatures by Tuesday night from angry and upset DStv subscribers and other South Africans.

After delays, the reality show, Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored, is starting on Moja Love on Saturday 25 May as the Vosho Queen gives viewers a glimpse of her surreal life with a '16-ish' age restriction.

Touted as South Africa's "most shocking reality show yet", Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored will start on Moja Love (DStv 157) on Saturday 25 May at 20:00.

After several production and scheduling delays, the reality show following the Vosho Queen and kasi socialite, Zodwa Wabantu, will give viewers a glimpse into her surreal life with her fiancé Ntobeko Linda.

Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored will retrace the Mzansi entertainer's journey from her birth to the public Zodwa personality that people know. "People will get to see where I was born and how I grew up. My family allowed me to bring cameras," says Zodwa.

At last week's Moja Love 2019 Content Showcase, one of the producers, when asked what the age restriction will be, said the show is "uncensored" but that it won't carry an age restriction of 18. "It will be 13. It will be 16-ish," he said.
