SABC3 under content strategy review again as The Estate is set to disappear.

by Thinus Ferreira

With its channel head gone, the South African public broadcaster's struggling SABC3 is once again undergoing yet another content strategy review with the fate of its local soap The Estate up in the air after it hasn't been renewed for a further season.

Although the SABC isn't saying that The Estate – produced by Clive Morris Productions – has been cancelled, the broadcaster has not ordered a fourth season with filming that will wrap at the end of this month on the low-rated show that plugged the gap which was left after Isidingo was cancelled.

The Estate struggled in the ratings since its debut with 418 028 viewers at most during April 2023.

After the cancellation of Isidingo in March 2020, viewers left to other channels as SABC3 replaced the timeslot with filler content while it took SABC3 over a year to get The Estate commissioned and on air from April 2021.

The SABC has told Clive Morris Productions that it won't be ordering any further episodes. It means the third season finale broadcast at the end of July will likely serve as a series finale, unless SABC3 perhaps commissions a fourth season at some point in the future.

Irrespective of whether there is a fourth season, The Estate's existing audience will evaporate from July since a fourth season won't follow seamlessly after the third with the show which will have to start from scratch to lure an audience if it were to return.

The SABC says further production of The Estate beyond the already ordered episodes have been "put on hold". After multiple turnaround strategies for the channel, the SABC says SABC3 is once again under a content strategy review.

"Key market changes such as the impact of the analogue switch and load shedding has forced a review on the channel’s strategy. In addition, The Estate will be put on hold whilst reviewing its offering. This exercise is aimed at enabling the S3 to better compete within the environment," the SABC says in a statement.

SABC3 is currently without a channel head after Pat van Heerden left at the end of April.

She shepherded the development of The Estate and was instrumental in finally getting it on the air.

She however struggled in the recommissioning process for further seasons due to internal politics within the SABC, which led to breaks between the first and second and second and third seasons of the show.

In late 2021 the cast and crew of The Estate went unpaid for months with the SABC that said in January 2022 that it was concerned about the non-payment of the cast and crew since the broadcaster had made its payment to the production company.

"S3 extends its gratitude to the producer, cast and crew of The Estate for a world-class and award-winning production and thanks the viewers for their support," the SABC says in a statement.

Khayelihle Dom Gumede, Clive Morris Productions chief operating officer (COO) in a statement says "It has been an immense privilege to work with the SABC in producing The Estate over the last three seasons".

"We are extremely grateful to our national broadcaster for the bravery and courage they have demonstrated in affording us the opportunity to tell authentic, hard-hitting, and groundbreaking stories, which reflect the South Africa we live in today."

"Thank you to our incredible crew and cast for their unparalleled talent and commitment and most of all thank you to you the viewers who have walked the journey with us over the last two years. We look forward to sharing the next chapter of The Estate with the nation after our production hiatus."

TV RATINGS March 2022: Big Brother Mzansi damages DStv's Mzansi Magic as SABC3 gets a BBC-boost with The Perfect Planet.

by Thinus Ferreira

The result of a badly-produced season of Big Brother Mzansi inflicted further TV ratings damage for Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) on Sunday nights during March with the show that lost an eye-popping 25% of its viewership since its debut in February - which was already lower than Idols.

Elsewhere in the TV ratings race during March 2022, the ratings deflation of SABC2 continued, SABC3 brought in a slightly improved performance helped by the BBC's The Perfect Planet on Sunday evenings, while e.tv had a wedding glow.

March 2022's TV ratings had SABC1's Uzalo (7 million) and Generations (5.69 million), as well as e.tv's Scandal (4.89 million) and House of Zwide (4.36 million) retain their top four positions as South Africa's most-watched TV shows during the month.

On SABC1 Skeem Saam (up from 3.82 to 4.04 million) had slightly more viewers in March, with both the Xhosa TV news (2.64 million) and the Zulu TV news (2.59 million) remaining very strong as the two most-watched TV news bulletins in the country.

The Siswati/Ndebele TV news also picked up viewers from 1.45 in February to 1.56 million.

The latest season of Nyan' Nyan' surged from 1.72 to 2.2 million viewers on SABC1, while Selimathunzi climbed from 1.62 million to 1.87 million viewers in March.

The reality show, 13 Weeks to Find Mr Right is on a roll and will quite likely see another season: it picked up viewers from 1.55 in February to 1.78 million viewers in March.

SABC2 deflation
SABC2's ratings deflation problem continues.

While Muvhango on SABC2 remained ever so slightly up at 3 309 806 viewers at most during March from February's 3 300 031 as the channel's most-watched show, the ratings of the rest of SABC2's schedule continue to weaken month by month.

In March, the pieces of programming on SABC2 that managed to lure more than 1 million viewers fell from five to just three. Besides Muvhango, only the Setswana/Sepedi TV news at 1 300 906 and Giyani at 1 026 424 lured more than a million eyeballs.

In February the 20th most-watched show on SABC2 (the film Despicable Me) still had 440 663 viewers. In March it was further down to 379 094 viewers (for a Generations repeat). Quite worrying is that the bulk of SABC2's ratings is starting to look like SABC3 a few years ago.

On the good side is the morning show Morning Live holding steady and over-performing at 528 564 viewers on SABC2 on weekday mornings. Hlala Kwabafileyo was up from 822 831 to 873 471 viewers. The Afrikaans soap 7de Laan was slightly up in March from 824 566 to 897 861 viewers.

A Perfect Planet helps S3
SABC3's ratings performance looked slightly better with both its top and bottom end of 20 highest-rated shows on the channel showing an improvement.

The film The Hate U Give lured the most viewers during March to S3 with 576 562 viewers, compared to February's top of a repeat episode of The Estate at 490 709.

While The Insider SA was February's 20th most-watched show on the channel at 229 714 viewers, SABC3 improved that ratings position with March's 20th place holder on SABC3 which was an episode of the BBC's The Perfect Planet attracting 317 634 viewers.

The Perfect Planet in fact came to SABC3 rescue during the month with four episodes from the series on Sunday nights that helped to boost the channel's ratings and all making its list of most-watched shows for the month: "Oceans" with 475 695 viewers, "Weather" with 407 721, "Volcano" with 336 823, and "The Sun" on 13 March with 317 634 viewers.

Variety-reality show The Masked Singer is doing okay-ish with 468 033 viewers given the channel's challenges. An original episode of the second season of local telenovela The Estate lured 352 741 viewers at most  - up from February's highest of 296 682.

Interesting to note: More viewers watch The Estate episodes as an omnibus on Saturdays than during the tough 19:00 weekday timeslot. In March The Estate omnibus pulled 464 564 viewers on Saturday.

e.tv mixing and wedding matching
Free-to-air commercial channel e.tv continues to have the best mix in local and international both rating well with March that was no exception.

Besides Scandal! and House of Zwide atop its ratings leaderboard, Imbewu turned in a slightly down but still fine third place with 3.44 million (down from February's 3.88 million), with Durban Gen surging from 2.16 to 2.51 million viewers during March.

Droves of viewers again watched Leon Schuster's Mr Bones (3.26 million) as the 4th most-watched content of the month on e.tv, with the channel's etv News bulletin at 20:00 at 1.96 million viewers that remains a strong ratings draw.

Pay-TV content chosen wisely, scheduled correctly and getting a public television window can still draw sizeable audiences with M-Net's Our Perfect Wedding that was on Mzansi Magic getting a great ratings reception on e.tv with 1.5 million viewers.

It's proof that pay-TV content windowed on free TV can work for all - leading to ancillary revenue for pay-TV operators through additional programme sales, and new ratings for free-to-air channels in turn making hay through ad income from pulling in new viewers who didn't watch the content before on pay-TV.

e.tv's new adult telenovela The Black Door got great sampling during March as well: An astounding 2.77 million viewers watched the preview filler on 28 March.

Big Brother Mzansi drags
In March, MultiChoice and Mzansi Magic continued to pay the price for the problems with a lacklustre Big Brother Mzansi that was marred with shoddy production values with more and more viewers who tuned out from the Sunday night live shows.

Where Big Brother Mzansi started with 529 041 viewers in January (already lower than Idols SA), its drop in February to 487 770 continued in March to 396 192 viewers at most. That's a loss of 25% from the start of the revived show to March. It will be interesting to see if Big Brother Mzansi could muster a rating turn-around for its finale on 3 April.

It's striking that Mzansi Magic has now lost over 600 000 DStv subscribers on Sunday evenings compared to a year ago before the last season of Idols experienced a sudden and unprecedented ratings implosion.

Elsewhere on MultiChoice's platform during March, Gomora at 1 063 440 was the top-rated show on DStv for the month, followed by an episode of The Queen at 814 637 viewers. The River was third with 707 169, and then Diep City with 655 496 subscribers watching.

Umndeni on Moja Love (DStv 157) climbed from 482 880 to 514 116 viewers in March.

The Estate: The latest on SABC3's ongoing rigmarole with 7pm - what you'll now see from tonight after The Estate: Rewind got dropped after just a week.

by Thinus Ferreira

Set to inflict both confusion and viewer whiplash, SABC3 is once again removing The Estate from its schedule from this evening after just a week's episodes of The Estate: Rewind was shown, suddenly replacing it with a rebroadcast of SABC1's drama series Family Secrets.

The third season of The Estate, produced by Clive Morris Productions, was supposed to continue seamlessly on S3 after the end of the second season but issues around the recommissioning process meant there will now be a gap of two months before viewers will see new episodes of the ratings-challenged show.

Earlier this month SABC3 announced that the third season of The Estate would start on 1 July. Then S3 announced that it has been brought forward to 20 June.

SABC3 initially planned to fill The Estate's timeslot with a rebroadcast of the SABC1 series Family Secrets with Khanyi Mbau, Katlego Danke, Vusi Kunene and Robert Whitehead and said that it would start on 18 April.

Then S3 suddenly announced that Family Secrets would no longer be on but that the channel would instead be showing a repackaged version of the first two seasons of The Estate, entitled The Estate: Rewind. The channel said that Family Secrets would now start on S3 on 16 May.

The Estate: Rewind started Monday a week ago in the 19:00-timeslot with five episodes shown but has now suddenly been pulled from the schedule.

SABC3 abruptly removed The Estate: Rewind after just a week and will now start showing Family Secrets from today, Monday 25 April. There is no indication of when The Estate: Rewind will now start, or resume.

Pat van Heerden, SABC3 channel head, in response to a media query about the constant chopping and changing of the S3's 19:00-timeslot after this week's latest change to the timeslot, told TVwithThinus that "The Estate season 3 was supposed to be delivered for the channel in April".

"The recommission process started in July last year but delays occurred in the processes at SABC resulting in a gap on-air."

"The gap on-air increased as more delays occurred, meaning that the channel had to find solutions. Each time the date got pushed out the channel has to identify solutions and part of the problem is that we have no new stock in local drama to replace The Estate with."

"We are very keen for The Estate to be back on-air as it is a tentpole for the channel's schedule and as soon as this occurs the channel will stabilise."

SABC3 fills its 2-month prime time The Estate telenovela gap with a repackaged rebroadcast titled The Estate Rewind.

by Thinus Ferreira

SABC3 is no longer replacing the 2-month gap between the second season and the start of the third season of its local telenovela The Estate with a rebroadcast of SABC1's Family Secrets from today, but will now be showing repackaged episodes of the first two seasons of The Estate, retitled as The Estate Rewind, from Monday evening.

The third season of The Estate was supposed to continue seamlessly on S3 after the end of the second season which was this past Friday but issues around the recommissioning process meant there will now be a gap of just over two months before viewers will see new episodes of the ratings-challenged show.

The debut of the third season of The Estate which S3 originally announced as 1 July has now also been brought slightly forward with the first new episode of the Clive Morris Productions show that will now start on 20 June in the tough timeslot of 19:00.

SABC3 initially planned to fill The Estate's timeslot with a rebroadcast of the SABC1 series Family Secrets with Khanyi Mbau, Katlego Danke, Vusi Kunene and Robert Whitehead from 18 April.

That has now changed and Family Secrets will now start on S3 on 16 May.

For a month from 18 April, SABC3 will now show The Estate Rewind - repackaged episodes from the first two seasons, showing the major plot points of the story so far.

"The Estate Rewind episodes will explore the subject of land reform, identity, and historical disempowerment. It will give the viewers a teaser of what to expect in The Estate season 3, which is set to return on 20 June 2022," S3 says.

Pat van Heerden, SABC3 channel head says "The Estate Rewind is our time to get up close to the world of our story. It is a time for us to contemplate the lines between reality and fiction – and how sometimes fictional daily drama can give us acute truths about the real world".

The Estate, revolving around the dual rich/poor communities of an exclusive housing development has had a troubled production and viewership history since its debut a year ago in April 2021 as an Isidingo prime time replacement.

The Estate has been struggling severely to hook eyeballs and with anaemic ratings slipping lower, the SABC decided to rebroadcast the first season during prime time on sister channel SABC1 in 2021 to try and lure more viewers to the second season on S3.

The Estate made its debut on SABC3 in April 2021 with disappointing ratings that kept worsening, mostly due to damage suffered by the success of e.tv's House of Zwide in the same death-zone 19:00-timeslot.

The Estate only pulled 352 741 viewers at most during prime time on S3 during March 2022.

Last year the cast and crew of The Estate went unpaid for months with several broken promises of payment and with the SABC at the time saying it had "great concern" about the issue.

Clive Morris Productions told cast and crew in late-2021 that their payments can't be made because of "delayed payment from the SABC", but the SABC said that it had paid the company.

SABC3's troubled The Estate going off-air for over 2 months.

by Thinus Ferreira

SABC3's troubled local primetime telenovela The Estate, is going on a break next week, with the show, produced by Clive Morris Productions that is going off-air for two and a half months.

The Estate, revolving around the dual rich/poor communities of an exclusive housing development has been plagued by production changes and challenges since its debut in April 2021 on the public broadcaster's S3 channel where it launched as an Isidingo replacement with little marketing, publicity or fanfare.

The Estate has been struggling severely to hook eyeballs, and with anaemic ratings constantly slipping lower, the SABC decided to rebroadcast the first season during prime time on sister channel SABC1 to try and lure more viewers to the second season on S3.

The Estate had at most a measly 296 682 viewers at 19:00 during primetime in February, again down from January's paltry 312 382 that made a production break or cancellation almost a certainty.

The Estate made its debut on SABC3 with disappointing ratings that kept worsening, mostly due to damage suffered by the success of e.tv's House of Zwide in the same death-zone 19:00-timeslot.

Last year the cast and crew of The Estate went unpaid for months with several broken promises of payment and with the SABC that said it had "great concern" about the issue.

Clive Morris Productions told cast and crew in late-2021 that their payments can't be made because of "delayed payment from the SABC", but the SABC said that it had paid the company.

On Monday SABC3 confirmed that "the popular telenovela The Estate will take a break from broadcast with the last episode of season 2 broadcasting on Friday 15 April". A third season of The Estate will start on 1 July.

Pat van Heerden, S3 channel boss, told TVwithThinus that "The Estate is a key pillar of the channel. We are intending recommissioning and it's in the process of recommissioning.  We are however facing a little bit of a gap between season 2 and season 3 which is very unfortunate".

"We're absolutely committed to the production quality and how The Estate has been working for S3. It both works in the morning - bringing audiences in. We have an omnibus on a Saturday; it does exceptionally well for us, and obviously our most challenging time is primetime."

"Isidingo was off for so long, so we've lost a lot of audiences who were loyal at that time on local soaps. We're building; since the beginning of The Estate we now see an incremental graph going up, slowly, but it's building and we have a commitment to that. And not only to The Estate but also to more long-running drama that we're trying to build on the channel."

"And we have to. We're dead in the water if we think we're going to a foreign local TV channel - it's not a possibility. We have to be a local channel providing high-end local drama."

The Estate's timeslot will be replaced by a rebroadcast of the SABC1 series Family Secrets with Khanyi Mbau, Katlego Danke, Vusi Kunene and Robert Whitehead.

by Thinus Ferreira

Tropika Island of Treasure is returning for a 10th season to SABC3 with Anga Makubalo as the host and a set of returning celebrity contestants in an "All Stars" season, similar to M-Net's upcoming 9th season of Survivor South Africa.

Tropika Island of Treasure: All Stars, an advertiser-funded production (AFP) from Clover once again produced by Cardova Productions, had a media launch event last week in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

Anga Makubalo, also known as NaakMusiq, will be the host of the new season of Tropika Island of Treasure: All Stars that will film in mid-2022 with a likely broadcast date on SABC3 between September and December.

He won the 7th season which was set in the Seychelles. "Bringing back a past winner returning as the host is a smooth way to celebrate the past winners of the show," says Miantha Roux, Clover beverages marketing manager, in a statement.

"We are excited to be bringing back Tropika Island of Treasure after a year-long Covid-19 hiatus. This 10th season we hope will be smoother than any other with a celebration consisting of returning All Star contestants taking their dreams once again to paradise."

Anga Makubalo also recorded the new theme song for the 10th season, and it will be released soon as a download.

"I'm really looking forward to hosting this All Stars season. Tropika Island of Treasure has had incredible hosts in the past and I can only be excited to be part of that tapestry in the celebration of 10 seasons," says Anga Makubalo.

"Most of all, I'm excited to observe the All Stars celebrities and new contestants that will feature in this new season, competing to unlock the treasure."

Tropika Island of Treasure: All Stars is currently waiting for entries with people who can send an audition video on whatsapp to 082 857 8054 in April and May.

During the second phase between September to December 2022, Tropika Island of Treasure: All Stars will be broadcast on SABC3 with 9 celebrities and the chosen contestants competing in a series of captivating challenges somewhere on an island.

"The show will be bigger and better, and we promise our viewers and consumers adrenaline-filled fun and entertainment with nail-biting and exciting challenges," says Barbara George,
Tropika senior brand manager.

SABC3's TV ratings slide: How S3 lost 50% of its viewership audience over the last 5 years between 2016 and 2021 - and is trying to reverse it.

by Thinus Ferreira

Over the last 5 years the struggling SABC3 has lost a shocking 50% of its entire audience with the South African public broadcaster's only commercial TV channel that continues to shed viewers in the TV ratings race despite yet another on-air and programming makeover earlier this year.

The TV ratings and viewership of the beleaguered SABC3, rebranded as "S3" in April this year continue to slide, with SABC3 that now has literally half the audience size than it had just half a decade ago when it was already in very big trouble.

From 1.525 million viewers that SABC3 had in January 2016 - already a small percentage from the channel's heydeys in the 2000s when it was known by its "Quality shows" slogan - ongoing viewership and TV rating erosion saw its viewership plummet 49.51% over the past 5 years to a maximum of just 769 858 viewers in July 2021.

In response to a media query about SABC3 ratings slide the past 5 years, Gugu Ntuli, SABC spokesperson tells TVwithThinus that "The SABC can confirm a decline in S3 audience ratings over 5 years and this is as a result of various reasons, including the rapidly changing broadcasting environment as well as the fire effects of Covid-19 in many fields, including broadcasting".

Where SABC3 could still sell ad spot pricing to advertisers, guaranteeing viewers of over a million for some of its shows and timeslots during 2016 and 2017, S3 is now down to selling audiences measuring in the 600 000 and 700 000s at most, with most programmes on the channel getting even lower ratings.

While SABC3 was supposed to serve as a revenue generator for the SABC's public access channels like SABC1 and SABC2 and their programming, the ongoing, steady decline of SABC3 has meant that the opposite has been happening - with the financially struggling public broadcaster's public channels in essence financing the beleaguered S3's content expenditure.

Although its ratings and creative input kept sliding as it aged, SABC3's primetime local soap Isidingo still delivered in excess of 780 000 viewers on weeknights when it left the SABC3 airwaves in March 2020.

A year and a half later, its replacement, The Estate, produced by Clive Morris Productions, made its debut on SABC3 with a disappointing 529  123 in the 19:00-timeslot in April this year. The show's ratings have since slid to hovering barely over the 500 000-viewers mark.

South African viewers do know that S3 exists - they just don't want to watch what's on it.

While SABC3 used to acquire and show a mix of premium international and local content placed in primetime throughout the 2000s that could effectively compete with especially eMedia's commercial free-to-air channel e.tv and MultiChoice's M-Net (DStv 101) as SABC3's biggest broadcast rivals in luring higher LSM-viewers, that is no longer the case.

The channel can however still be a ratings draw - if the content resonates with enough viewers.

In April 2020 when SABC3 broadcast Steven Soderbergh's compelling 2011-film Contagion during the height of the first wave of South Africa's Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, viewership for the channel surged to a whopping 4.465 million viewers and an absolutely incredible 49.2 audience share.

It means that out of every two TV sets turned on the night of 5 April 2020 in the country, one was tuned to SABC3.

Likewise, in July 2018 when SABC1's Generations - The Legacy was shifted to SABC3 because of sport on SABC1, ratings surged to 6.935 million on SABC3 that easily lifted the channel above the ratings of anything shown on sister channel SABC2.

Here is SABC3's ratings slide over the past 5 years in ratings numbers:

January 2016: 1.525 million
June 2016: 1.492 million
January 2017: 1.729 million
June 2017: 1.457 million
January 2018: 1.045 million
June 2018: 6.335 million

January 2019: 873 479
February: 821 676
March: 791 540
April: 844 226
May: 925 431
June: 2.006 million
July: 3.273 million
August: 956 738
September: 989 449
October: 957 500
November: 936 217
December: 780 561

January 2020: 1.014 million
February: 1.093 million
March: 877 800
April: 4.465 million
May: 1.076 million
June: 828 166
July: 1.166 million
August: 1.369 million
September: 810 424
October: 1.025 million
November: 1.242 million
December: 596 656

January 2021: 903 884
February: 620 419
March: 1.557 million
April (relaunch as S3): 783 061
May: 680 196
June: 731 009
July: 769 858

The cause
SABC spokesperson Gugu Ntuli, says SABC3's "audience numbers have been dropping for the past 5 years because competitors have been quite aggressive at a time when the SABC was going through serious cash flow challenges and thus limited the ability for the broadcaster to respond substantively to its challenges".

Some of the biggest challenges for SABC3 came as a result of the loss of its "first-to-market" pillar titles like Days of Our Lives (that was since picked up by rival e.tv) and The Bold and the Beautiful

Their absence as lead-in shows to the rest of SABC3's primetime schedule had a debilitating, ratings destruction effect.

The banishment of Days and Bold led to a drop in SABC3's audience numbers going into the long-running local Isidingo which in turn was also not yielding the required revenue anymore. Then even Isidingo was culled and ended with its last episode in May 2020 without any immediate replacement.

Like falling dominos, even in daytime SABC3 then started to sag in the ratings, because of the loss of daytime repeats of Isidingo and other shows.

Add a litany of SABC3 signature shows from Top Billing to High Rollers that abruptly got axed over the past few years and it's clear how the channel dismantled the character and content identity it once had without replacing it with anything else that gave viewers a reason to stick around.

Then there's the fact that SABC3 has always had the smallest broadcast transmission footprint of the SABC's analogue TV channels.

The halt of the creation of any further analogue transmission towers the past decade to try and expand SABC3's footprint, as well as the switch-off of analogue transmitters in the drawn-out digital migration process to digital terrestrial television (DTT) further eroded its possible viewership.

Don't forget that the former SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng's drastic and abrupt "80% local, 20% international" local content decree also inflicted massive damage on SABC3, completely destabilising the channel's schedule that in turn led to big chunks of its audience fleeing.

Once SABC3 executives were forced to remove foreign shows from the channel without any coherent replacement stategy, a lot of viewers also evaporated.

"S3 also lost major audiences while catering for Covid-19 messaging and educational programming," says Gugu Ntuli.

Besides Covid-19 messages, the SABC also decided to fill the SABC3 schedule with educational content. Even those viewers who remained with the channel eventually finally fled when its schedule suddenly switched to Woza Matric content for as much as 5 hours per day, 7 days a week. This lasted for months, further damaging ratings.

Trying to reverse falling ratings
The S3 schedule is being rebuilt - the first pillar being the new local soap The Estate, with episodes of the show that is now also being rebroadcast on SABC1 during primetime to try and lure viewers to its struggling sister channel.

"It must be noted that we have just started a 3-year strategy in April 2021. S3 needs to grow in a sustainable way with a clear brand and programming promise. This needs an environment of support and consistency to flourish, as well as great PR and marketing backing," says Gugu Ntuli.

"The Estate will remain the prime local drama on S3," she says.

About The Estate's sagging ratings - a show that was launched with barely any above-the-line marketing spend or PR behind it - Gugu Ntuli says that its performance is "impacted by the performance of the entire channel that requires a lot of investment and time for a proper turn-around".

"The loss of audiences is a quick process for a platform but to build audiences starting from a low base does take time, particularly in prime time in a very congested channel space. Despite this, the SABC is very proud of The Estate property on S3."

"We are not giving the series to SABC1 but we have requested that SABC1 plays the series from the beginning to allow audiences to catch-up with the storyline, particularly for audiences that may have missed the start of the show."

"We are confident that in time audiences will increase for The Estate and allow the SABC to recoup its investment and grow audiences for the show."

SABC1 tries to save S3's The Estate with a bizarre primetime rerun from 6 September at 7pm with the local telenovela that will now be shown back-to-back on two SABC channels nightly.

The SABC is stepping in to try and save the costly new locally-produced telenovela The Estate on SABC3 that desperately needs to attract more viewers and that is struggling with low and falling ratings and in an unprecedented and bizarre programming move, will now show it during primetime on two of its TV channels from 6 September when SABC1 will add it as a rebroadcast.

The Estate - produced by Clive Morris Productions, and positioned as the replacement of SABC3's cancelled Isidingo that ended in March 2020 - made its debut in April with a disappointing ratings-high of just 529 123 viewers in its 19:00-timeslot when the public broadcaster's struggling sole commercial TV channel SABC3 rebranded as "S3" with a new on-air look.

While the production cost of the ensemble series remains the same, The Estate's TV ratings have since slid to 526 738 at most in May, 492 127 viewers at most in June, and 503 193 viewers at most in July.

While August ratings are not yet final, The Estate's viewership took a further knock this month after e.tv launched its new primetime weekday soap, House of Zwide, replacing its cancelled Rhythm City, in the 19:00-timeslot, further siphoning viewers away, along with Legacy on M-Net (DStv 101).

Now, although its three terrestrial TV channels are catering to different demographics and with The Estate that was developed specifically for SABC3-audiences, the SABC decided that SABC1 will be filling its 19:00-timeslot left vacant after the end of uBettina Wethu with The Estate in the form of primetime reruns.

As part of the bizarre scheduling decision, a rebroadcast from the beginning of The Estate will start on SABC1 from 6 September on SABC1, meaning that viewers will get a new episode of The Estate on S3 at 19:00, followed by a 5-month old repeat episode of The Estate in primetime on SABC1 at 19:30.

SABC1 says that The Estate double-bill spread over two channels during primetime gives "viewers an opportunity to catch the story from the beginning".

The Estate already has a next-day repeat on SABC3 at 11:00, and will likely also get a morning repeat slot on SABC1 in the way that uBettina Wethu has at 11:30.

In response to a media query about the motivation behind the scheduling move, SABC1 spokesperson Caroline Phalakatshela says it is to "give viewers who might have missed the premiere on SABC3 another opportunity to watch the show from the beginning and to migrate audiences to SABC3 to catch premiere episodes".

The second season of The Longest Date on S3 with 16 new contestants are about finding love in unlikely - and dangerous - places.

by Thinus Ferreira

A second season of the original local reality show, The Longest Date starts tonight on S3 at 21:00 after it was recently filmed as a Covid-19 safe so-called "bubble production" with a group of 16 new singles all looking for love in unlikely - and dangerous - places.

The 16 new contestants who were grouped into 8 couples according to their possible compatibility on paper, have to compete in various challenges for the chance at winning the R100 000 cash prize.

The local format show that was created by Samantha and Graeme Moon for SABC3 is being produced by Brandgen Productions and for the second season headed to the scenic Oribi Gorge in KwaZulu-Natal with Christopher Jaftha back as the host.

In every episode of the new season, the couples attempt to complete extreme tasks ranging from shark diving to mud-rallying that are all designed to take them out of their comfort zone, with the lowest-scoring couple that is constantly getting eliminated until there's only one couple left.

Chris Jaftha says "we have something really special on our hands with the second season". "There is a lot we learnt from the first season and for the second season we've upped the stakes and the challenges are more grueling."

"I'm the stuntman of the show, I do some of the pre-viz, your pre-visualisations. While I'm explaining the challenges to the contestants, the audience gets to see what the challenge is supposed to look like. I can tell you for certain, that if I think that I nearly died on one of the challenges ..."

"The safety crew and my producers got a little concerned because in one of the challenges, the river crossings in particular - I'm not going to mention too much about it so we have something to look forward to - I didn't come up for about a minute and people thought I had drowned. Until I eventually came up."

"I was just trying to hold my breath, to be honest to get through the challenge but I have the scars on my neck from the rope burn to prove it. So the show is hard, it's exceptionally hard, it's dangerous."

Samantha Moon says "we have some incredible challenges on The Longest Date - not only do we have the elements but we shot an episode a day which is unheard of to do an episode a day and if we did not have Christopher who is not only the host but also our stuntman who is a one-take wonder and who remained engaged and is the most talented host I've ever worked with, I don't know that we can get it done the way we do".

"He literally does every challenge - every physical challenge we throw at him without a complain and he's kind enough to never renegotiate his rates."

She describes the 16 contestants as "the most diverse, interesting, engaging, vulnerable and relatable cast that is on television today."

"SABC3 took a risk on this original format and they continue to work with us as we push further to showcase this incredible cast - there wasn't any pushback, instead they constantly push us further to show the contestants' journey in the most authentic, natural format possible."

"When you shoot 12 hours a day to film a reality show, the only thing that's scripted is Chris. For the rest - it's their story, it's their journey, we don't create stories in post-production," Samantha says.

"Yes, the second season was filmed in a Covid-19 safe bubble in a beautiful part of KwaZulu-Natal," Samantha explains when TVwithThinus asked how the coronavirus impacted the production of the show.

"Crew and cast tested negative for Covid prior to arriving. All cast were housed in their own housing and so all crew, so we did create a Covid-safe bubble."

"We also are fortunate in that we filmed exclusively outdoors and maintained all protocols to sanitising and mask-wearing. We didn't have any cases of Covid-19 while on-location. Unfortunately, there's been a few in post-production but that is what it is - third wave."

Jacqui Hlongwane, SABC3 acting programme manager, says "what we wanted to improve for the second season was to just make it as representative and as diverse as possible in terms of exploring all kinds of relationships, regardless of sexual orientation. That was really, really big for us."

"The new S3 slogan is 'Open Up' and it's about opening up to new worlds, to new experiences, to new conversations, to new relationships, making yourself vulnerable and putting yourself out there and getting out of the comfort zone."

"The Longest Date is a very unique concept because it's about finding love in an unlikely space where you yourself are being tested to your limits. The Longest Date is pushing the boundaries and having the conversations and representing everybody."

FALSE ADVERTISING. SABC silent about the ongoing no-show and changing of content on SABC3 that again promised Bollywood movies only to end up not showing it.

by Thinus Ferreira

The "new" S3 behaves exactly like the bad and unreliable SABC3, with the SABC that is silent about SABC3's promise to return Bollywood movies only to renege on its promise and own schedule without any explanation.

S3 viewers are angry and upset after the SABC promised to return Bollywood films to the SABC3 schedule but then not doing it, and then staying silent about it.

This past Saturday, S3 was supposed to show Ki & Ka at 19:30 as it returned Bollywood films to its weekend schedule with Ki & Ka published as part of its channel listings.

At 19:30 on Saturday evening Ki & Ka wasn't shown but S3 suddenly broadcast a Hollywood movie - schedules be damned.

SABC viewers told TVwithThinus that it's "false advertising on SABC3".

"The channel has been advertising the return of Bollywood movies today at 19:30 with Ki & Ka, however it's now broadcasting a Hollywood movie If Only". Why is Ki & Ka not being aired?" a viewer asked.

By Wednesday morning at the time of publishing of this report the SABC didn't respond with any answer, explanation or apology in response to a media enquiry that TVwithThinus had sent to the SABC on Monday.

The SABC remains silent after it was asked days ago why Ki & Ka was scheduled and advertised but not shown, why a Bollywood film was again advertised only to become a no-show, and why the SABC isn't alerting SABC3 viewers to schedule changes.

NFVF's SAFTAs jury removes Katlego Maboe as a nominee from Best TV presenter category for the 15th South African Film and Television Awards.

by Thinus Ferreira

The National Film and Video Foundation has dumped Katlego Maboe as a nominee from the 15th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) in the Best TV presenter category following allegations of a cheating scandal.

The NFVF announced late on Friday afternoon that Katlego Maboe has been removed as a nominee from the Best TV presenter category at the 2021 SAFTAs where the winner is determined by public voting.

"After careful deliberation of concerns raised regarding the nomination of Katlego Maboe in the Best TV presenter public vote category announced on Thursday 29 April, the SAFTAs jury has decided to rescind his nomination," the NFVF said in a statement.

"The rescission is effective immediately and voting code 5 has been removed from the voting USSD line," the NFVF said.

Katlego Maboe was nominated as TV presenter for Tropika Island of Treasure Curacao, produced by Cardova Productions.

Katlego Maboe has been removed from S3's morning show Expresso, also produced by Cardova, after shocking allegations came to light, made by his estranged wife, who said that he allegedly damaged her womb after giving her a sexually transmitted disease.

The estranged couple is currently embroiled in a protracted legal battle in court.

The virtual 15th SAFTAs ceremony will be shown on Saturday 22 May on the SABC's S3 channel and MultiChoice and M-Net's Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) channel as a simulcast broadcast. It will start with a half-hour of red carpet coverage from 18:30, followed by the main awards show from 19:00.

NFVF apologises for omissions to nominees list for 15th SAFTAs with film Griekwastad and The Animation School increasing their nomination tallies.

by Thinus Ferreira

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is apologising for leaving the names of some nominees off the list for the upcoming 15th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) with the Afrikaans film Griekwastad, The Animation School and Green Leaf Films all getting a further chance at possibly winning a Golden Horn statuette.

The 15th SAFTAs, with Anneke de Ridder as executive producer, will be broadcast on Saturday 22 May, with a virtual half-hour "red carpet" broadcast starting at 18:30 and the 2-hour live broadcast that will start at 19:00 on the night and that will be a simulcast show on the SABC's S3 and Mzansi Magic (DStv 161).

In the category for Best short film, Address unknown from Green Leaf Films joins the existing three nominees of Heirloom (Butterfly Films), The Stranger (TH Films) and Uxolile (Zinc Pictures).

In the category for Best Student Film, Fowl Goblin from The Animation School joins Binding Adventures, Flower in the Subway and The Boy and the Robin that are all The Animation School nominees as well, taking its overall tally from 3 to 4 nominations.

In the category of Best achievement in directing for a feature film, Jozua Malherbe for Griekwastad (kykNET, DStv 144) is also a nominee and joins Jenna Bass for Flatland (DStv BoxOffice), Sunu Gonera for Riding with Sugar (Netflix) and Louw Venter for Stam (DStv BoxOffice).

The additional nomination of Griekwastad for Jozua Malherbe means that the film increases its tally from 6 to 7 and that kykNET adds another nod, as well as Jozua Malherbe who is also nominated in the category for Best achievement in cinematography for a feature film.

The NFVF was asked why how the mistakes happened and who is responsible for checking the final SAFTAs nominees list issued to the media but the organisation didn't answer the question.

Neo Moretlwe, NFVF spokesperson, in response to a media enquiry says that "The NFVF on behalf of the SAFTAs would like to extend a sincere apology for SAFTAs nominees that were not captured on the initial list shared. This was an unintentional error that we have since rectified".
