REVIEW. The 3rd season of Pair of Kings on Disney XD continues the crazy Kinkow adventures with a big story change and a new character.
The new third season of the enjoyable Disney sitcom Pair of Kings - starting today at 09:20 (South African time) on Disney XD (DStv 304) with a double episode - deals with a major and unbelievable (as in unbelievable) plot and cast change.
Although it stretches the premise of the show - a new third, long-lost fratenal twins-now-triplets brother miraculously shows up on the island of Kinkow just after one brother randomly exists for a non-credible reason and who is only seen briefly by a stand-in actor shot from behind -the outlandish Pair of Kings is still fun and very watchable.
The friendly folks at Disney have specially sent over a screener disk with the first episode of the new third season of Pair of Kings for review. The new season started in June in America and South Africa will be less than three months behind as new episodes roll out with a new one every Saturday morning at 09:45 and a repeat on Sunday mornings at 09:45.
Pair of Kings has dropped one thing that made it fun - the theme song. Gone is the ditty sung by Mitchel Musso (who is co-incidentally the actor and one "twin" dropped from the sitcom). In the place of King Brady in the story Disney added/replaced Adam Hicks as the new third "twin" who it turns out, has been King Boz on the nearby island of Mindu.
(The island nation sank during the storm. Yes. A bit hokey, but what can one do besides just go with it. Oh, and the Minduians like to hug. "Hug, hug my people!")
Of course Adam Hicks, better known to the Disney crowd as Luther in Zeke and Luther, is now shaking up the dynamic of the show. He's an oddball-goofball character who can make monkey noises, is more adventurous, island-knowledgeable, and "at home" so speak in the setting, making Doc Shaw's character of King Boomer in Pair of Kings now come across as the "square" one.
Adam Hicks, used to Disney's stage lights, seems instantly comfortable in the going-for-akward mold the role requires and the self-deprecating moments and scenes the teen audience loves and identifies with - from literal navel-gazing and monkey attack posturing to awkward hugs.
Lanny (Ryan Ochoa) is still the funniest in the trying-to-get-rid-of-them scenes as the character, like Disney's Sharpay who is actually more clever and constantly plotting, yet never comes out on top.
Pair of Kings remains well watchable and escapist fun despite the uncomfortable changeover. The third season of the sitcom is sure to advance the bonding process between the two new brothers and flesh out the island plot, backstories, creatures and peoples further.

Programming note: The 3rd season of Pair of Kings starts on Saturday 13 October at 09:20 on Disney XD on DStv - watch the massive twist!
The third season of Pair of Kings starts on Saturday 13 October (tomorrow) on Disney XD (DStv 304) at 09:20 (South African time) and Disney does it properly and correctly for South African viewers: with a wonderful double-bill of the first two episodes together, since it's the season opener after all and also one story.
Pair of Kings's 3rd season opener entitled "The New King: Part One - Destiny's Child" is on Saturday at 09:20, followed by "The New King: Part Two - The Bro-fessor and Mary Ann" at 09:45. After this Saturday, there will be one new episode of the 3rd season of Pair of Kings shown on Disney XD in South Africa every Saturday at 09:45, with a repeat on Sundays at 09:45.
This 3rd season and this season opener is noteworthy of course since Mitchel Musso who played Brady has of course been dumped from the show (and he also sang the theme song).
So there is the awkwardness of having to write a character out in some way, without having the real character make an appearance, and then somehow coming up with a story idea which is not too far-fetched, and then hoping that the new dynamic between established characters and the new character work.
Actor Adam Hicks join the cast of Pair of Kings in this third season of this Disney teen drama (although, I can admit that as an adult I like and watch this show and thought this to be the best show on the channel when I saw the teaser trailers when Disney XD launched as a channel last year and showcased all the individual shows).
Also cool is how quickly Disney scheduled the 3rd season of Pair of Kings for Disney XD in South Africa. It only started in June and is at episode 15, so South Africa is only about three months' worth of episodes behind.
I won't spoil the narrative and the surprising twists of how Mitchel Musso and the character of Brady is written out of Pair of Kings, but Adam Hicks will be revealed to be Boz, the "lost" triplet brother of the two.

BREAKING. Mitchel Musso out of Disney XD's Pair of Kings; replaced by Adam Hicks as the sitcom gets picked up for a 3rd season.
Mitchel Musso is out of Disney XD's (DStv 304) Pair of Kings as the show just got picked up for a 3rd season. No reason was given, although the actor, was arrested for drunken driving in October. Mitchel Musso had a contract for at least a possible 3rd season in the sitcom, but after the drunken driving incident recently, Disney dumped him.
In a statement Mitchel Musso, who also sings the theme song of Pair of Kings, says ''since I was 12 Disney Channel has been an extended family to me and I want all of my friends there to know that I appreciate the opportunities that have come my way and I look forward to focusing on acting and music projects that are in development and sharing the news with my fans around the world soon. I wish the cast, producers, and crew nothing but success on the next season of Pair of Kings.''
Mitchel Musso will be replaced by Adam Hicks who will play a new ''long lost brother''. Production on the new 3rd season of Pair of Kings will start in February 2012.
