MultiChoice says although there wasn't one this August for South Africa's media that the pay-TV operator will have a 2021 MultiChoice Content Showcase this year.

by Thinus Ferreira

MultiChoice tells TVwithThinus that there will still be a 2021 MultiChoice Content Showcase event in 2021 for the South African media and that the pay-TV operator plans to and will still do another content showcase press event this year despite having not done such an event in August.

MultiChoice in South Africa previously held MultiChoice Content Showcase media events for South Africa's gaggle of journalists covering television in person.

Sometimes it happened twice a year, including a December one (2019 was the last year for a bi-annual showcase with one that took place in December 2019 as well).

These useful and valuable MultiChoice Content Showcase media events have always been multi-day junkets, with MultiChoice rolling out its own content and IT executives as well as M-Net content and channel bosses to talk about technology developments, new content slates, and with some third-party TV channels also presenting.

The media would also get to sit in on some selected panel sessions with Q&A's with some on-air talent from certain selected new and upcoming shows.

MultiChoice executives and channel execs have also been available to answer questions from the media, with questions that are often things that DStv subscribers and the public are wondering about or want to get clarity on.

MultiChoice SA switched to a virtual and severely truncated 2020 MultiChoice Content Showcase last year as a televised presentation in August 2020. It was also a one-day only event lasting just a few hours.

The 2020 showcase, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was hugely scaled down - a far cry from when brands ranging from SuperSport and BBC Studios Africa, to A+E Networks Africa, M-Net, kykNET, Discovery Inc., ViacomCBS and others would get specific days and timeslots to make presentations about their content and upcoming new programming to the media.

Announcements made during the 2020 MultiChoice Content Showcase like a new DStv Streama decoder never materialised and became so-called "vapourware". Other new DStv pop-up channels were announced of which launch dates were pushed out and details later confusingly changed.

Besides the South African MultiChoice Content Showcase which is where the pay-TV operator's concept originated, MultiChoice Africa successfully copied it with MultiChoice Content Showcase events that have been taking place in various other African countries, done in Southern Africa as well as East Africa and West Africa.

Several virtual MultiChoice Content Showcase events took place earlier this year in some countries outside of South Africa, with MultiChoice also staging physical, in-person MultiChoice Showcase events in countries like Ethiopia, Zambia and others.

Several South African readers, as well as South African journalists, have been asking for months about whether, and when, MultiChoice will be doing another MultiChoice Content Showcase in South Africa specifically.

Expectations grew before August, as well as during August, but MultiChoice did nothing and also didn't communicate anything to the press about whether there would be a content showcase or that it has been postponed.

Until now there's just been silence about something that MultiChoice, through repetition, created an expectation over with the media.

In response to a media query from TVwithThinus this week about whether a MultiChoice Content Showcase for this year has been cancelled, or might be going ahead, MultiChoice confirms that the pay-TV operator "will have its showcase this year".

"We will share dates and details with the media in due course," MultiChoice said.

M-Net's Vuzu AMP on DStv gets new dramas Quantico, Heroes Reborn, Power, and more How to Get Away with Murder in 2016.

Vuzu AMP (DStv 114) has acquired the new dramas Quantico, Heroes Reborn, Power and will have some more How to Get Away with Murder.

M-Net's Vuzu AMP announced the new dramas and acquisitions at the MultiChoice Content Showcase held just over a week ago in Mauritius.

So far only one journalist from Africa who attended it wrote about Vuzu Amp's shows and the actual programming announcement.

South Africa's press and TV critics were not invited and didn't attend, and Vuzu Amp's marketing and PR division didn't release the channel's upcoming programming announcement details to South Africa's press (so they couldn't write about it, even if they wanted to).

However, here is what Vuzu AMP viewers can look forward to on the DStv channel, which is as applicable for viewers in South Africa, and of course for the rest of the continent:

Quantico - starts 28 September 2015
This new drama looks incredible and its strange that it's allocated to Vuzu AMP and not to M-Net (DStv 101) - it belongs on M-Net.

I saw a few minutes of the first episode in July and was blown away. The new drama follows the lives of new FBI recruits training at the Quantico base in Virginia.

Someone is a secret double agent (we don't know who); people are romantically involved with each other; there's overtones of 9/11 (and a conspiracy theory); someone is ejected in the first episode and thrown out of the programme - and although i saw just a few minutes I love this show already.

Heroes Reborn - starts 29 September
Yep, SABC3 which had Heroes doesn't have this new, reset 13-part mini-series which starts in America on 24 September and on Vuzu AMP on 29 September.

Again, why this is on Vuzu AMP if M-Net has ResurrectionUnder the Dome, The Whispers, Game of ThronesArrow and Gotham and other such shows, beats me.

It's becoming harder to tell and just know what would be on M-Net and what would be on Vuzu AMP because Vuzu AMP's channel positioning (or M-Net's - depending on your point of view) seems off.

While the dividing line between M-Net and M-Net Edge is clear, Vuzu AMP is trying to  - or feels like it is - becoming a "M-Net 2", instead of being its own thing.

The exact same type of shows should always be only on the one type of M-Net channel I feel so you instantly know where future, similar shows are going to show up.

Anyway, there's a lot of new humans in Heroes Reborn who discovery they have super powers, and a few familiar older faces will also return. And this time you'll be able to watch it in high-definition (HD) and series producer Tim King is back as executive producer.

Power - starts 31 October
Uhm, just kinda one question: Why is this show on Vuzu AMP and not on M-Net when its totally, completely not aligned to Vuzu AMP and an ill-fit when M-Net has Suits, House of Cards and Mr. Robot?

Power, which is more like FOX's Empire and Tyrant, is gritty - but actually great (and ironically also stylish but in a strange way).

Power is also definitely not a youth television show - meaning its not actually suitable for Vuzu AMP.

Power suffers by comparison with Empire, but definitely still watch it. It's actually very good, and very much the same, although lesser known. Two seasons ( 8 episode first season, 10 episode 2nd season) are done and the show has been renewed for a third.

Power, a Starz drama like Black Sails on History (DStv 186), revolves around successful executive James "Ghost" St. Patrick who has a wonderful Manhattan penthouse and owns the nightclub Truth. But the truth is that he runs a drug empire - and now he wants out.

I wonder what would happen if you did a marketing focus group and had young and old people who've watched M-Net and Vuzu AMP and put them in a room, then show them Quantico, Heroes Reborn and Power, and ask them to guess what TV channel each show would be on.

I'm sure they would say M-Net for all of these besides perhaps Heroes Reborn, which could also easily be M-Net.

Besides these shows, How to Get Away with Murder (yet another extremely oddly Vuzu AMP allocated show that's an ill fit) will be back from 11 January 2016 for a new season.

Today's interesting TV stories to read from TV with Thinus - 14 September 2015

SABC's SABC2 news reader Lucas Kgaphola fired for fraud.
The Sepedi news reader at the SABC sacked over invoices submitted for shifts he didn't work.

How and why Diamond Platnumz tarnished his brand by appearing on the MultiChoice Content Showcase stage.
Tanzania's Daily News "utterly disgusted" by the Tanzanian artist's behaviour in Mauritius at MultiChoice's Content Showcase; says the country's reclusive Diamond Platnumz "couldn't spare a few moments with fans from other African countries" during the 5-day press junket.
(Don't forget that Diamond Platnumz was set to perform last year for MultiChoice's Africa Rising song he recorded for the 2014 event, and then missed his flight.)

The ITV drama series Downton Abbey series finale will be on Christmas Day.
While South African viewers won't see it for a very long while on BBC First on DStv, Jim Carter who plays butler Carson spills about the very "fitting end" final scene set on New Year's Eve 1925: everyone singing Auld Lang Syne; people will need "two hankies".

30 years later The Golden Girls is still the most progressive TV show there ever was.

"Our customers guide our decisions," MultiChoice Nigeria's managing director tells the Consumer Protection Council (CPC).
Also, Nigeria's ThisDay newspaper that doesn't know how DStv's logo looks, reports that MultiChoice told Nigeria's Consumer Protection Council (CPC) in Abuja that MultiChoice is committed to "customer satisfaction".
The CPC meeting is of course a result of DStv's dramatic price hike in Nigeria earlier this year, which led to a court case and an injunction which MultiChoice ignored, which saw the court case dismissed, and subscribers furious with DStv.

This Friday will see the Supreme Court of Appeal case starting over the Public Protector's report on the SABC's famously matricless boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
The case to be heard from Friday is about "When Governance and Ethics Fail" - Thuli Madonsela's scathing report dealing with maladministration and abuse of power at the SABC and the irregular appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Former SABC presenter, Carole Charlewood (81) has died.
Was the presenter of The Human Factor on TV1 in the 80s.

MultiChoice's DStv DISH magazine chaos.
DStv subscribers want their paper monthly magazine with highlights and programming and TVSA reports a lot of people are not getting it and its "been a fiasco for too long" and why.

First look at Hawkman and Hawkgirl.
Will be seen in upcoming new TV drama, Legends of Tomorrow.

I Am Cait on E! Entertainment (DStv 124) tanked.
Big first episode and since then viewership keeps falling.

Pay-TV services will have to improve their video-on-demand (VOD) offering.
Full-season stacking of on-demand episodes should become the norm, with better interfaces says American pay-TV boss.

"Irrevocable shift" happening for television.

MultiChoice's DStv Content Showcase in Mauritius 2015: A summary of the programming upfront and news so far.

MultiChoice is having a 5 day DStv Content Showcase in Mauritius, starting today after an official opening event on Tuesday evening.

Sadly and very disappointingly so, MultiChoice couldn't be bothered in the slightest to even beforehand just tell me, or other TV critics and longtime journalists covering television, that it would be happening.

So ...

While several DStv channels on MultiChoice's pay-TV service - from Sony Television and the BBC to SuperSport, M-Net, BET, MTV Base, A+E Networks UK's History, Lifetime and many others - are presenting their latest and upcoming programming and content, I'm not able to report about it directly, comprehensively and as incisively and fully as I would have, or would have liked to.

But I will try my best as the days ahead go by, to try and bring and summarise what MultiChoice and its channel content partners are unveiling, revealing and communicating. Of course it's largely depends on it being actually reported in the first place by some of the press and media under the 200 people actually there...

Tuesday 1 September
Nothing like some naked statues from a clothing shop at  the bread table inside the marque tent to look at, at Tuesday's gala welcoming dinner event. It's called the "Night of a Thousands Stars" - although its closer to 200 people there. The guest-list read like the "Who's who of Africa's entertainment and media".

Stephan and Lu opened the show with a cover version of Black Eyed Peas' "I've got a Feeling'. IK Osakioduwa was the host, together with Eku Edewor. Someone lost a watch.

MultiChoice Africa CEO Tim Jacobs in his opening speech says that DStv will "do all we can to make the best content available". The same story here and some more photos.

See Rita Dominic's outfit for the dinner last night! (Cause that's what why're you're flying all the way there to co and cover, right?) And then there's the trash running after Banky W to ask him when he's going to get married for a tabloid story.

Apparently Hollywood actor Johnny Depp is set to attend the DStv Content Showcase taking place at the Outrigger Mauritius Resort & Span.

African celebrities and journalists "bask at the content showcase extravaganza" according to Uganda's New Vision newspaper.

Here is someone's travelogue who forgot "what day and time it was".

Ahead of the official start there was a sightseeing tour of Mauritius and a visit to sugarcane plantations, and here's the press and guests arriving from Tanzania, Botswana, Nigeria and elsewhere at the airport. Ghana's Stonebwoy ... not drunk, just looking tired.

It's apparently Africa's biggest television content showcase - but South Africa's TV press gets shut out. For the rest of the press, Caroline Creasy, corporate affairs general manager of MultiChoice Africa says the moment you've been waiting for has finally arrived".

Wednesday 2 September
On Wednesday morning, MultiChoice held a MultiChoice Africa Media Roundtable press conference at Main Beach Marquee with Tim Jacobs, Theo Erasmus, (M-Net regional director for East and Southern Africa and Lusophone coutries), David Booth and Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu (M-Net West Africa's regional director).

Sadly I can't cover it, although David Booth the chief content officer for MultiChoice tried to defend the indefensible - MultiChoice's repeats on DStv - saying: "A repeat is not a repeat if you haven't seen it".

If now only a crime wasn't a crime if you haven't seen it, or abuse not abuse if you haven't seen it, or poverty not poverty if you haven't seen it. Imagine.

Several African countries called out MultiChoice and M-Net at the panel session for the way in which Nigerian TV content is "overshadowing" other African region's content.

Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu from M-Net said there's more more Nigerian content on DStv because Nigeria produces more content.

On why there's more Nigerian stars at the MultiChoice Content Showcase than people from other countries, M-Net says the personalities from other African countries were too busy for MultiChoice and had conflicting schedules and therefore couldn't make it to Mauritius.

With Naspers' ShowMax launching and Netflix on its way, Tim Jacobs also revealed at the press conference that MultiChoice is apparently looking at adopting some new DStv subscription models to "give greater flexibility to subscribers", given the steep rise in DStv subscription fees across Africa.

MultiChoice said ShowMax "tries to eat our lunch" and that MultiChoice has to be innovative since Naspers' ShowMax is "cannibalising" the DStv audience.

Theo Erasmus said several African countries still need to increase their capacity and upscale their local TV content output in order to boost Africa's film and TV industry.

MultiChoice revealed that a kids pop-up channel from Turner Broadcasting will be added to DStv for the December holidays.

MultiChoice said that M-Net Movies and The Walt Disney Company Africa's Star Wars Channel is an experiment and that DStv will do 4 pop-up channels in 2016.

Here's the best run down of everything the panel said at the press conference.

MultiChoice is looking at the possibility and researching the option of a Sports specific DStv bouquet as well as whether offering big sport events as pay-per-view is economically viable.

On Wednesday Sony Television did a The Amazing Race Sony Spectacular Search "activation" as the marketers call it.

Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa) which runs channels like MTV Base and Comedy Central built a sandcastle with their activation also happening today ahead of a type of game.

Zambia's Daily Mail reports that MultiChoice Africa's general manager of corporate affairs, Caroline Creasy, and MultiChoice Africa's CEO Tim Jacobs get on stage to do a lip sync battle of Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off at VIMN Africa's evening event.

Friday 4 September
On Friday the saritical TV news show Zambesi News will be in Mauritius to entertain the press MultiChoice did invite.
