M-Net acquires STROOP with the award-winning rhino-poaching documentary with Bonné de Bod that will be broadcast across the M-Net and kykNET channels during September.
M-Net has acquired the award-winning and hard-hitting rhino-poaching documentary, STROOP - Journey into the Rhino Horn War with Bonné de Bod with both the English and Afrikaans versions that will be broadcast across its M-Net (DStv 101), M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 104), kykNET (DStv 144) and kykNET&kie (DStv 145) channels during September.
STROOP has won 23 awards at 30 international film festivals so far with Bonné de Bod as presenter and Susan Scott as director.
STROOP - Journey into the Rhino Horn War takes the viewer on a rollercoaster ride between Africa and Asia. These first-time filmmakers embed themselves on the front-lines of the rhino poaching crisis where they are given exclusive access to the war unfolding.
Carving out 6 months for the project, the two women quickly find themselves immersed in a world far larger and more dangerous than they had imagined, only emerging from their odyssey 4 years later.
"Seeing what I’ve seen in this species-war on the ground, the huge emotion from the men and women fighting with integrity and courage to protect rhinos for us - it's very hard to convey that adequately on screen and I've tried to get that across as best I could," says Bonné de Bod.
"All I want is for people to see what is happening so that no-one can say, 'they didn't know'".
The crowdfunded, independent film has been acquired by M-Net and the English version will be broadcast on M-Net (DStv 101) on Sunday, 22 September on World Rhino Day after the Sunday night movie.
STROOP will also be on M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 104) the next evening, Monday, 23 September at 20:00.
The Afrikaans version of STROOP, also narrated by Bonné de Bod, will be shown on kykNET (DStv 144) on Saturday, 28 September at 20:00 and on kykNET&kie (DStv 145) on Sunday, 29 September at 20:00.
"It’s an honour to bring STROOP home to South Africa," says Jan du Plessis, director of M-Net channels. "Even though it's a global phenomenon, it's a film about what is really going on here in South Africa and you simply have to watch it. It deserves prime spots on our schedules."

The South African comedian Trevor Noah will be on the Oscars stage very early Monday morning South African time for the 91st Academy Awards in Los Angeles, when he, together with a diverse group of other stars, will introduce the 8 Best Picture nominees.

The 91st Academy Awards will be broadcast live on M-Net Movies Premiere at 03:00 on Monday 25 February, with a delayed broadcast on the same Monday night at 21:00 on M-Net (DStv 101).
"Hosting the red carpet for M-Net for one of the biggest awards shows in the world is an absolute highlight for me," says Anele Mdoda in a statement.
"I have watched the Oscars every year and the most memorable moments for me were when Denzel Washington and Sandra Bullock won, and when Charlize won - and gave South Africa a shout out."
"This year I look forward to celebrating with the Black Panther cast as they head in with seven Oscar nods. We have to speak to Bradley Cooper and salute his directing for A Star Is Born, as well as his performance in it."
"We must also get Spike Lee - who has an honorary Oscar but has his first ever nomination as director for BlackKklansman. And then we hope to chat to Mahershala Ali who was nominated for Green Book and of course Glenn Close for The Wife. We also can't forget about Rami Malek and Bohemian Rhapsody! And then of course, there’s the fashion!"

Donald Trump announces his Dishonest Media Awards for the day after the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
The caustic American president Donald Trump has announced that he is starting his own Dishonest Media Awards from the White House that he will dish out on the day after this Sunday’s upcoming Golden Globe Awards.I will be announcing THE MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR on Monday at 5:00 o’clock. Subjects will cover Dishonesty & Bad Reporting in various categories from the Fake News Media. Stay tuned!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 3, 2018
In a tweet on social media, Trump said that he will announce on this coming Monday his new – in all capital letters – his “MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR”.
The American president that hardly does any media interviews or press conferences like his predecessors, continues to attack journalists and to slam media outlets.
In 2017 he continued to publicly show his disdain for everyone from the BBC and the “failing” The New York Times, to CBS News, Vanity Fair and Anna Wintour, TIME magazine and Newsweek, to CNN, CNN International (DStv 401), The Washington Post, NBC News and MSNBC (StarSat 263).
Donald Trump however loves the right-leaning FOX News Channel (StarSat 261 / Cell C black 502) and watches the opinion-skewed morning show FOX & Friends – which means that sadly FOX News will clearly be shut out of and shunned from the American president’s inaugural “dishonest media” awards.
Donald Trump said he would be handing out his “dishonest media” awards on Monday at 17:00 in America in various “fake media” categories, ranging from “dishonest” to “bad reporting”.
His new awards show is likely a pre-emptive strike against Hollywood’s entertainment media with actors, producers, directors and other stars from the world of television and film who are very likely going to for the jugular during Sunday night’s 75th Golden Globe Awards broadcast with host Seth Meyers.
Sunday’s 75th Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live on Monday morning 8 January on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform on M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 104) at 03:00 in the morning South African time, and then again during South African primetime on the same day on M-Net (DStv 101) at 21:10.
There will also be red carpet pre-show coverage this year on Facebook and E! Entertainment (DStv 124).
Last year, 12 days before Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th American president, Meryl Streep slammed him in her acceptance speech of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, saying “There was one performance this year that stunned me – it sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good; there was nothing good about it. But it was effective, and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh, and show their teeth”.
“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter,” Meryl Streep said, referring to Donald Trump who mocked a disabled reporter from The New York Times.

BREAKING. Several exciting M-Net pop-up channels, film festivals, foreign language films and premium foreign language TV series coming to MultiChoice's DStv in 2017.
Again upping the bar in the TV content made available to DStv subscribers in South African and across Africa, MultiChoice and M-Net top executives - on Monday during a conference call with media - revealed more of their plans for 2017.

M-Net through its M-Net Movies division will be packaging several new M-Net Movies pop-up channels for DStv next year, and is busy working on putting together jam-packed film festivals.
In addition, the schedules for the M-Net Edge and M-Net Movies Premiere channels on DStv have been adapted to bring viewers a smorgasbord of carefully sourced and selected foreign language art-house films, as well as acclaimed foreign language TV series from across Europe, starting on 16 December.
"We're doing a James Bond pop-up channel in February 2017, then The Fast and the Furious in March. Then there's an African film library showcasing the best in African film in May to co-incide with Africa Day," Jan du Plessis, director: M-Net channels, told TVwithThinus.
"We're also working on creating a month-long martial arts film festival with all the classics and all the new stars. Every day when I look at the list of the films we're busy acquiring, I just think it's going to be incredibly popular".
"Then in December 2017 we want to do a festival of 'The 100 movies you need to see before you die'. So we're working very hard on it already - 100 movies you really need to see before you die."
"Then the big other thing is that we continue to do on M-Net (DStv 101) on Sunday nights the big premiere movie of the week - the curation of the 52 best Sunday night movies - but we're adding another one."
"On M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 104) we will now be showing a second great movie. I won't call it the second best - it's the addition of an great alternative."
"Then the big news is that we're starting on 18 December on M-Net Edge (DStv 102) on a Sunday at 21:00 'The Best of World Cinema' - as a foreign language, arty, niche, discerning cinema-goer choice."
"So essentially on a Sunday at 20:00 you can see the movie on M-Net (DStv 101), at 20:30 on M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 104) you can see an alternative selection, and at 21:00 on M-Net Edge (DStv 102) you can see the best of world cinema."
"We've really got amazing stuff," says Jan du Plessis. "We're kicking off with The Idol that's a Palestinian drama, and we've got Yves Saint Laurent [French biographical drama] the next week. Then we have a number of French films."
"And I'm also busy putting together a whole Pedro Almodóvar [Spanish director, screenwriter, producer] film festival that will end with Julieta".
Edgy TV: The Best of World Series
DStv subscribers can also get ready for what's been called "the best TV drama in the world" and "one of the great foreign language TV shows you should be watching".
"Starting on Saturday 17 December will be 'The Best of World Series' on M-Net Edge (DStv 102) at 21:00 and that will be a foreign language TV series," says Jan du Plessis.
"The first one we're kicking off will be Deutschland 83 [acclaimed 8-episode German TV series]."
"Then we're working on a French TV series - the deal isn't quite signed yet but it should be completed this week. And we're also looking at - there's some absolutely incredible Scandinavian TV series we're looking at."
"So basically on a weekend - on Saturday at 21:00 and Sunday at 21:00 - you can watch either 'The Best of World Series' or 'The Best of World Cinema'," says Jan du Plessis.
Pop-up channels: 'We've collected it for you'
Asked about the popularity of the M-Net pop-up channels - from Star Wars and M-Net Movies Blackout, to M-Net Movies BlockParty, Harry Potter and others - and what it is in the consumer psychology that makes these limited time TV channels such must-see, watch-bait, MultiChoice says it's about giving pay-TV subscribers what they want to see in one place, when they have more time to watch.
"It's basically a trend that we started with the The Oscar Pistorius Trial: A Carte Blanche Channel that worked really, really well," says Aletta Alberts, the general manager: content for MultiChoice.
"The success is in the curation of the content, and we focused on periods where we know consumers are on holiday or that they've got more time to view. So I think it's a combination of those things."
"We also basically say, if you're a Harry Potter lover, we've actually specially curated this for you, you don't have to go and search for it because peoples lives are becoming more and more busy."
"Pop-up channels deliver additional content and additional value over a period like the Christmas holidays like now - for instance fliekNET (DStv 198). On 16 December we're launching M-Net Inspire (DStv 109), and we've just come out of Harry Potter."
"There are key time periods - last year we did the kids' pop-up channel with Turner, so you'll see a lot of that happening. It adds extra value and is about curating the content in a way so that it doesn't sit across many channels but giving the customer one really strong channel."
"And from a marketing perspective, it's also easier to steer people to those channels," says Aletta Alberts.
Jan du Plessis says "Harry Potter did incredibly, incredibly well for us. The channel was actually within the top 10 most watched channels on DStv. In fact during it's first weekend it was one of the top 2."
Jan du Plessis says he was amazed with the results from the M-Movies Blackout pop-up channel - an urban movie channel that ran during June this year that showcased the collected array of work from black American actors.
"The individual ratings of the movies [on M-Net Movies Blackout] were incredible - it was much higher than the regular movie channel ratings. Blackout also ended up as a top 10 channel on DStv for the two weeks it was on."

Changes coming from July to M-Net's set of M-Net Movies channels on DStv.
A cascade domino-effect is coming to M-Net's set of M-Net Movies channels on MultiChoice's DStv platform from July.
In late April during a meet-and-explainer event with various press at MultiChoice City and speaking on background (and not on the record) while answering journalists' questions in general about the set of M-Net Movies channels, M-Net Movies executives alluded to coming M-Net Movies changes.

RACIST? SEXIST? M-Net deliberately deletes and crops out the only black man and the only woman from the Horrible Bosses 2 poster art to market it on DStv.
M-Net decided to deliberately delete the only black man and the only woman featuring on the Horrible Bosses 2 poster to promote the movie on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform, leaving only white men.
M-Net Movies took the original Horrible Bosses 2 poster art and decided that it didn't want the sole black man or the woman in the image.
M-Net photo-shopped Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston out of the image that was shown on DStv's channels and on social media to promote the Sunday night film on the M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 103) channel.
The strange move from M-Net comes across as very racist and sexist.
Look again carefully at what M-Net did in its image: spacing is clearly not a problem: Jamie Foxx doesn't appear at the horizontal side where it might make the overall image "too long". He filled a "gap" that's simply now left empty.
The same goes for Jennifer Aniston: To add insult to injury, M-Net's reprehensible image doctoring leaves the space where she stood completely empty.
It's not as if M-Net "functionally" deleted her to crop and make the image "shorter" - the space where she stands but got deleted from is left there.
It begs the question: Why did M-Net decide to deliberately remove all traces of specifically these two characters - the black man and the woman? And how many people at M-Net, after it was done, all saw it and signed off on it and said this is right?
This also wasn't a "little" or thoughtless decision. Notice how Jamie Foxx' right hand had to be scrubbed from the image. Notice how Jennifer Aniston's whole arm had to be deleted and a whole new black tie created for the character she stood next to.
Making M-Net's disgusting marketing photoshopping even more reprehensible is if keep in mind that M-Net is a South African company and that M-Net Movies Premiere presumably would want South African viewers, and South African viewers of all races, to watch.
If anything, the black man and the sole woman should have been left in the image and one or two of the white men rather deleted to make the image come across as more multi-cultural and inclusive.
I have asked M-Net for comment on Sunday afternoon and why the pay-TV broadcaster decided that the only black man in the marketing image and the only woman in the image who was put there originally by the Hollywood movie studio isn't good enough to be there for South Africa.
I will update this story if and when M-Net has a response.

M-Net gives the set of M-Net Movies on DStv an on-air look makeover with a unique appearance fitting every movie channel's theme.
M-Net has given its set of M-Net Movies on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform an on-air makeover, with new-look links for all the various thematic movie channels.
The new M-Net Movies on-air imaging started last week on 1 July and gone is the white kaleidoscope fins in various colours which used to denote the various thematic movie offerings.
CLICK ON THIS SENTENCE TO THE NEW ON-AIR LOOK OF ALL THE M-NET MOVIES CHANNELS
"The M-Net Movies channels launched nearly two years ago and we decided to refresh the look and feel with exciting, brand new imaging to resonate with, and enhance, the viewers' experience of the channel," says Jan du Plessis, M-Net's director: group content services.
From 1 August Jan du Plessis will become M-Net's new director: movies from August at the pay-TV broadcaster, taking over the management of M-Net's set of M-Net Movies channels.
"The original channel imaging with the white background has made way for channel-specific looks for all nine of our M-Net Movies channels," Jan du Plessis tells TV with Thinus.
M-Net Movies Action+ sports a fiery blast and the pink M-Net Movies Romance has fluttering silk sheets.
M-Net Movies Stars literally is among the stardust with a blue galactic constellation theme, while the copper-toned M-Net Series Zone is evocative of old-school print film negatives.
"The logos have not changed as they all still sit in the M-Net Movies family of channels and the movies offering, and the content proposition remains superior," says Jan du Plessis.
"The intention is to focus on the uniqueness of each channel and assist our viewers in navigating through our movie offering. The M-Net Movies channels remain the ultimate movie destination on DStv".
"We used elements and items which best represent the content and personality of each channel in a warm, engaging manner. For M-Net Movies Family - being a family friendly channel - we used puppies for a warm and also cuteness factor".
'To signal the high-quality, premium nature of our flagship movie channel, M-Net Movies Premium, the use of diamonds says it all," says Jan du Plessis.
"The new channel imaging is a great reflection of the unique selling points of each of these movie channels and the specific type of movies on offer".
"Furthermore we believe that the new packaging also contains a choice of the most entertaining line-ups possible, depending on what type of movie you're in the mood for and that underlies M-Net's promise to deliver the most compelling channels possible".

COOL. Well done M-Net and DStv, live Academy Awards nominations on M-Net Movies Premiere channel goes off without a hitch.
A nice step forward for South Africa, thanks to M-Net and DStv, which for the first time ever brought South African TV viewers the nominations for the Academy Awards live, and in high definition (HD).
The link-up was perfect (it started a few minutes late but that was because they were running a bit late in the United States) but M-Net and M-Net Movies pulled this one off without a hitch.
Paying for television isn't just about quality television and better television; part of the currency is relevance, immediacy.
By showing the nominees for The 85th Academy Awards in real-time, live and in HD, M-Net and DStv advances the scope of what it offers South African viewers as part of a global popular culture community.
It not only increases subscriber buy-in and the enjoyment of those viewers who follow and watch an event such as the Oscars, but also elongates the overall viewer experience which gets another television chapter added to its staggered on-screen story as it is played out on television in South Africa.
The 85th Academy Awards will be shown on M-Net and across M-Net channels on DStv as follows:
Monday 25 February from 03:00 on M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 103)
Monday 25
February from 20:30 on M-Net (DStv 101)
Tuesday 26
February at 20:30 on M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 103)
Saturday 2
March at 18:00 on M-Net Movies Stars (DStv 111)

BREAKING. 70th Golden Globes this year on M-Net and for DStv Compact viewers on M-Net Stars; Academy Awards on M-Net in February.
M-Net will have the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards for subscribers on M-Net (DStv 101) live on Monday 14 January at 03:00 in the morning as well as again on M-Net later the day in primetime at 20:30, but for the very first time ever M-Net is making this Hollywood awards ceremony available to all DStv Compact subscribers as well by broadcasting it a few days later on the M-Net Stars channel (DStv 111).
The 70th Annual Golden Globes will be shown on M-Net live and during the evening on the day it takes place in high definition (HD), and M-Net will repeat it a day later on M-Net Movies Premiere (DStv 103) on Tuesday 15 January at 20:30.
DStv Compact subscribers will also be able to watch the Golden Globes for the very first time; M-Net is scheduling the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards for M-Net Stars on Saturday 19 January at 18:00 (South African time).
Meanwhile M-Net has also secured the broadcasting rights to The 85th Annual Academy Awards or the Oscars taking place in February and will show it in South Africa on Monday 25 February at 20:30 (South African time).
M-Net of course also has the broadcasting rights for the first time of the 7th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) which will be taking place and will be shown in March on one of the M-Net channels as I've reported in November - most likely Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) or maybe M-Net (DStv 101) if the organisers and producers can do something about dramatically improving the shoddy production values.
