MultiChoice Kenya: Shocking plunge of 84% in a year from 1.2 million to just 188 948 DStv subscribers after multiple massive price hikes

MultiChoice Kenya has seen a shocking DStv subscriber plunge in just a year that has almost completely wiped out MultiChoice Kenya's subscriber base, with an 84% drop in customers.

MultiChoice Kenya's Dstv subscribers fell off a cliff from 1.195 million subscribers in June 2024 to just 188 948 Dstv subscribers by June 2025. 

That is a massive drop of 84.2% in East Africa in what is MultiChoice's third largest pay-TV market after South Africa and Nigeria in West Africa.

MultiChoice Kenya's digital terrestrial television (DTT) subscribers plunged a shocking 88.7%, with GOtv subscribers falling from 2.79 million in June 2024 to just 362 543 GOtv subscribers by June 2025. 

MultiChoice Kenya's decimated subscriber numbers are contained within the latest Broadcasting Services Report for the third quarter of 2025 of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK).

While rival StarTimes from China had a lot fewer DTT subscribers than MultiChoice, the drastic plunge in GOtv subscribers mean that StarTimes at 492  330 subscribers now have more DTT customers in Kenya than MultiChoice.

On satellite pay-TV StarTimes now also has more subscribers in Kenya than MultiChoice with 195 948 subscribers, although it also saw a 45.9% decline from a year ago when it still had 361 953 satellite pay-TV subscribers.

MultiChoice Kenya hiked DStv prices by over 5% in the East Africa country in November 2024 - the 4th steep increase in two years, after which DStv customers became very vocal that they're cancelling DStv. 

Adding insult to injury and driving DStv cancellations have been the utter lack of any real explanations to existing and potential DStv Kenya consumers about what's behind the steep increases.

After the last round of DStv price hikes customers spoke out across social media, like Michelle Katami who called Dstv "greedy and uncontrollable": "You cannot increase pricing, whenever, wherever you feel like. What is your excuse this time? DStv subscription in Kenya is overpriced. Only sports channels matter to me. MultiChoice Kenya needs to be regulated at this point".

Ron Peter asked MultiChoice Kenya to "provide justification for the increases in your prices. Otherwise I haven't seen any improvements in content except for SuperSport channels. Over the years you have remained stagnant. We welcome other pay-TV into the Kenyan market".

MultiChoice Kenya hikes prices for DStv Kenya subscribers again by up to 7%

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking prices yet again in the East African country for business customers as well as for for business customers in the ican country with the latest price increase which will hit companies subscribing to its service from August 2025.

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking DStv fees by up to 7%.

In November 2024 MultiChoice Kenya hiked prices in the country by up to 5.4%  - the 4th price hike in two years.

From August 2025, DStv Access will increase from KES1,350 to KES1,450, DStv Family is increasing from KES2,100 to KES2,250, while DStv Compact is increasing from KES3,900 to KES4,200.

MultiChoice is increasing DStv Compact Plus from KES6,800 to KES7,300 while DStv Premium is getting more expensive from KES11,000 to KES11,700.

The DStv Lite plan remains unchanged at KES750.

The GOtv Value package is decreased from KES699 to KES599, while the Plus plan remains unchanged.

GOtv Max will be increased from KES1,599 to KES1,699 and GOtv Supa is increased from KES2,099 to KES2,199. MultiChoice is increasing the GOtv Supa Plus plan from KES3,000 to KES3,199.

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking prices yet again for business customers in the East African country with the latest price increase which will hit companies subscribing to its service from August 2025.

Nzola Miranda, MultiChoice Kenya managing director, informing business subscribers in a letter about the price hike from August, says MultiChoice Kenya will be "making adjustments to its prices" but offers no explanations or reasons for the latest increase.

The DStv Stay package is increasing to Sh3370, DStv Essential is increasing to Sh2510, and DStv Basic is increasing to Sh1580. 

On DStv Play the Basic package is increasing to Sh5700, Essential is increasing to Sh9950, and Ultra will cost Sh15650.

On the DStv Work package, the Essential option will now cost Sh2050, while Ultra will increase to Sh5850. 

To add a foreign language channel will now cost Sh500, while the CNN International (DStv 401) add-on as a TV channel often seen in hotels, will cost Sh465 from August.

MultiChoice Kenya loses case to pay lower value-added tax in the West African country

MultiChoice Kenya has lost a case at Kenya's Tax Appeals Tribunal to pay less value-added tax (VAT) after the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) slapped the pay-TV operator's business in the East African country with KSh 681 million (R94.2 million) in additional tax, penalties and interest.

MultiChoice Kenya claimed lower VAT in the period between January 2021 and June 2023, and argued that it was properly registered under Kenyan business tax laws and entitled to pay a lower VAT amount after deducting what is called "input tax".

MultiChoice said that it was MultiChoice Kenya, not MultiChoice Africa, that is operating as its local tax agent.

MultiChoice argued that MultiChoice Kenya could therefore deduct input tax in the country - the VAT a business pays on goods or service to produce those - from the VAT it collects and pays on sales.

MultiChoice however had a foreign-entity PIN for tax purposes and couldn't get this foreign-entity PIN to be accepted on Kenya's Tax Invoice Management System (TIMS).

According to the KRA, it was MultiChoice Africa and not MultiChoice Kenya operating the DStv and GOtv pay-TV services, as well as the Showmax video streaming service, in Kenya. 

The KRA said MultiChoice is doing business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions - consumer business that falls under Kenya's taxable digital marketplace supplier VAT laws.

The KRA argued that MultiChoice Kenya isn't eligible for VAT tax deductions since it is MultiChoice Africa operating in the country, and that as a business operating B2C transactions, it doesn't qualify for a lower VAT tax rate as a non-resident supplier or company.

Kenya's Tax Appeals Tribunal sided with the KRA, ruling that "the finding by the Tribunal is that the respondent (KRA) was justified in issuing an assessment and disallowing the input tax claimed by the appellant".

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking DStv prices in the East African country from November for the 4th time in two years, this time by up to 5.4%, leading to massive outrage under DStv consumers saying they're cancelling.

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking DStv Premium by 4.7% from Sh10500 to Sh11000, with DStv Compact Plus increased by 4.6% from Sh6500 to Sh6800.

DStv Compact is increasing, 5.4% from Sh3700 from Sh3900. MultiChoice is hiking DStv Family by 5% from Sh2000 to Sh2100.

It's the 4th time in two years that MultiChoice Kenya is hiking DStv subscribers' monthly fees. 

When MultiChoice Kenya last hiked prices in the country in March by up to 6% it was the third price hike in a year after price increases in April and August 2023.

"We would like to inform you that MultiChoice Kenya will be making adjustments to some of its DStv subscription prices effective from 1 November," Nzola Miranda, MultiChoice Kenya managing director, announced.

MultiChoice Kenya failed to provide any reasons for the latest price hike.

DStv Kenya subscribers are furious and say they're cancelling - similar to DStv subscribers in other countries from Uganda to Namibia where MultiChoice Africa announced further recent price hikes.

In a shocking move, MultiChoice is hiking DStv prices for a second time within a year in Kenya and this time by up to 6%, with DStv subscribers who saw their DStv subscription fees going up by as much as 10% since April this year, having to brace for yet another massive increase from August.

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking prices for all of its DStv and GOtv packages in Kenya, blaming the country's ongoing currency depreciation and rising inflation. 

It's extremely unusual for MultiChoice to raise prices twice within a year within any African country, and last did a DStv price hike of almost another 10% in September 2022 in Kenya, after which the next DStv price increase since April 2023 followed. 

Now DStv subscribers in Kenya are getting yet another price hike just four months after the last one in April.

DStv Kenya is hiking DStv Premium from Sh9500 to Sh9900 from August, an increase of 4.2%.

DStv Compact Plus is increasing 5% from Sh5900 to Sh6200, DStv Compact is increased 6% from Sh3300 to Sh3500, DStv Family is increased 5.7% from Sh1750 to Sh1850, and DStv Access is increased by 4% from Sh1250 to Sh1300.

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking the GOtv Max bouquet by 8.6% from Sh1749 to Sh1899, and is increasing the price of the GOtv Supa bouquet by 7.4% from Sh1349 to Sh1449.

MultiChoice Kenya is telling DStv subscribers in the country that it "understands times are tough and Kenyans are under pressure to make every shilling, which if spend, counts. For this reason, we kept the price adjustment below inflation".

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking DStv prices for the second time in just 7 months and by up to 10% in the East African country from 1 April 2023 with angry DStv subscribers saying they're cancelling DStv, upgrading their internet and permanently switching to streaming services like Netflix.

The latest DStv Kenya price hike comes mere months after MultiChoice Kenya last hiked DStv tariffs in September 2022 by almost 10%. 

The latest DStv price hike in Kenya mirrors the shocking MultiChoice price increase being done in Uganda, where it will also be the shocking second price increase in 7 months.

MultiChoice Kenya in a statement says its DStv price hike from April comes as "MultiChoice acknowledges the difficult economic climate in Kenya and thus has kept the increase at the lowest possible point while ensuring sustainability and provision of quality services".

MultiChoice Kenya is making DStv Premium subscribers cough up 6.7% more, raising the cost of DStv Premium from KES9500 to KES8900 (R1264) from April.

DStv Compact Plus subscribers will pay 7.2% more from KES5500 to KES5900, with a shocking 10% increase for DStv Compact subscribers who will see their monthly DStv subscription skyrocket from KES3000 to KES3300. 

The price of DStv Family is hiked from KES1600 to KES1750 - a big increase of 9.3%.

MultiChoice Kenya is also hiking the prices of its various GOtv packages which are being increased by as much as 8%.

DStv Kenya subscribers are furious about the second shocking price hike in less than a year, with one saying he is "not ready to pay KES3300 for services I don't enjoy. Instead, I will upgrade my internet and start streaming like others, you can come for your decoder and dish".

DStv subscriber Ken Walker says wants to know why MultiChoice is "increasing the price and reducing services like the number of devices that can stream, and mess up our favourite channels like Nat Geo".

Peter Obe remarks that "in this era of 4G/5G internet in our homes, you guys are still contemplating on how to increase monthly subscriptions? It's just headscrathingly dumb!"

Geoffrey Njenga slammed DStv Kenya's latest price hike as "undoubtedly insensitive", with Edwin Kirui saying "this is just exploitation".

Michael Fidds says "You cannot increase prices and your package just repeats old series! Will soon find my sports options elsewhere. For entertainment we're already on Netflix".

Kariuku Gicira says MultiChoice "has reduced streaming devices as well. I think we need another option", while Benji says "You keep crying about taxes and cost of business, yet your biggest competitor Netflix did the exact opposite and lowered their subscription charges".

George Ndamaiyu is also very upset with MultiChoice Kenya's price hike and says he "cant wait to connect to the internet and officially quit this service. No content. Just repetitive shows and movies".

MultiChoice Kenya announces price hike from September 2022 with lowest-tier DStv Access customers hit with whopping 9.5% increase.

MultiChoice Kenya announced its hiking prices for DStv subscribers from September 2022, with an especially steep increase of 9.5% for its lowest-tier DStv Access subscribers.

MultiChoice Kenya is making DStv Premium subscribers pay 5.9% more from September, with DStv Premium monthly fees increasing from Ksh8400 to Ksh8900.

DStv Compact Plus subscribers currently paying Ksh5100 will have to pay Ksh5500 from September - a whopping 7.8% increase.

DStv Compact subscription fees are increasing with 7.1% from Ksh2800 to Ksh3000, while DStv Family fees are increasing 6.6% from Ksh1500 to Ksh1600.

Shockingly, MultiChoice Kenya is keeping the biggest percentage increase for DStv Access which is used by the poorest households subscribing to its lowest DStv tier. DStv Kenya is hiking this by a whopping 9.52% from Ksh1050 to Ksh1150.

A day after MultiChoice Uganda announced its hiking DStv subscription fees from September 2022 by up to 7.6%, MultiChoice Kenya made a similar price hike announcement, telling its angry pay-TV subscribers that "We hear your concern. When we decide on pricing, we consider our costs like our satellites and distribution equipment; buying shows, movies, and channels; decoders; our infrastructure like playout facilities, monitoring services and customer touch points".

MultiChoice Kenya's announcement of yet another DStv price hike prompted a backlash from customers, complaining about MultiChoice's repeats across DStv channels and saying it's time to abandon DStv and to look for other alternatives and streaming services like Netflix.

MultiChoice Kenya said "We continually reassess our packages and change the channels on these packages to address repeats. We listen to what our customers say and look at what they are watching. We also work closely with channels to address repeat issues within a specific channel".

MultiChoice Kenya has announced a big price hike of up to over 8% for DStv Kenya and GOtv Kenya subscribers from September 2021, saying the monthly subscription fee increase is due to MultiChoice having to absorb an increase in the pay-TV company's operating costs in the East African country and the weakening of the country's Kenya shilling.

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking its subscription fees similar to MultiChoice Uganda that also announced a price hike for DStv Uganda and GOtv Uganda subscribers from September 2021, as well as MultiChoice Tanzania hiking prices for DStv Tanzania and GOtv Tanzania subscribers.

MultiChoice Ghana is also hiking prices for DStv Ghana and GOtv subscribers in the West Africa country from September by up to over 6%.

MultiChoice Kenya in a statement said that the pay-TV operator has "over the past year absorbed increase content costs and foreign exchange impacts, due to the weakening Kenya shilling".

"We review the prices of each of our packages very carefully every year to ensure that we continue to offer our customers the best local and international content, delivered through the best technology. As our costs to operate the business increase, we need to adjust the prices of our packages," MultiChoice Kenya says in a statement.

From 1 September 2021 MultiChoice is hiking  DStv Premium from KES7 900 (R1 063) to KES8400 (R1 130) - an increase of 6.32%. 

Access fees will increase by KES50 for all DStv packages.

From September MultiChoice Kenya is increasing the price of DStv Compact Plus from KES4 800 to KES5 100 (6.25% increase), DStv Compact from KES2 650 to KES2 800 (5.66% increase), DStv Family from KES1380 to KES1500 (8.69% increase), and DStv Access from KES1 000 to KES1 050 (5% increase). 

GOtv Max in Kenya increases 7.4% from KES1 070 to KES1 150, GOtv Plus increases 6.74% from KES815 to KES870, and GOtv Value increases 7.8% from KES510 to KES550.

MultiChoice and M-Net expand the set of Maisha Magic TV channels in East Africa with addition of Maisha Magic Movies launching on 26 July on DStv.

MultiChoice and M-Net East Africa are expanding its existing set of Maisha Magic channels in East Africa with the addition of the Maisha Magic Movies (DStv 141) channel that will be launching on Monday 26 July in countries East African countries like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Malawi. 

MultiChoice and M-Net already run channels like Maisha Magic East, Maisha Magic Plus and Maisha Magic Bongo in East Africa and did a media event launch on 19 July to announce the addition of the Maisha Magic Movies channel to the DStv bouquet. 

Maisha Magic Movies that will be available to DStv Premium, DStv Compact Plus and DStv Compact subscribers will show films with an emphasis on content and feature films produced in East Africa, and will include titles at launch spanning various genres like 94 Terror, Damu Moja, Freedom Movie, Kizingo, Kutu, Mume Mzee, Sangita, The Torture and Worlds Tofauti.

Barbara Kambogi, Maisha Magic Movies channel head, says "We continuously study audience behaviour and tailor-make our offering to match the needs of the market at hand, hence the launch of Maisha Magic Movies".

MultiChoice Kenya hikes DStv subscription fees up to 14% from September.

MultiChoice Kenya is hiking DStv subscription fees in the East African country by 14% from 1 September 2020, citing increased operational costs.

DStv Kenya told subscribers in the country that they will be paying more from September. According to MultiChoice Kenya the price hike is "necessitated by the escalating costs to sustain the business in order to continue delivering unbeatable content, innovative technology and excellent customer services in Kenya".

DStv Premium subscribers in Kenya will see their monthly subscription fee get hiked from Sh7 370 (R1172) to Sh7 800 (R1240), an increase of 5.8%.

DStv Compact Plus subscribers who are now paying Sh4 420 will pay Sh 4 700 (R747) from September - 6.6% more.

MultiChoice Kenya told DStv Compact subscribers who are now paying Sh2 455 that they will be paying Sh2 600 (R413) from September - 5.9% more.

DStv Family subscribers in Kenya will see their Sh1 180 subscription fee increase to Sh1 350 - a 14% increase for DStv subscribers on this lower-tiered package.

DStv Access subscribers in Kenya will see their subscription increase from Sh885 to Sh900 - a 1.6% increase.

Nancy Matimu appointed MultiChoice Kenya managing director, replaces Eric Odipo as pay-TV operator's first female boss in the East African country.

MultiChoice has appointed Nancy Matimu as MultiChoice Kenya managing director from December 2019 and is replacing Eric Odipo who took up the position in June 2017 and left.

Nancy Matimu was the vice-president, head of mark development for sub-Saharan Africa at MasterCard and becomes the first female managing director to head up MultiChoice Kenya.

"I am delighted to join Kenya’s leading video entertainment company and to be the first female managing director of the business. I’m looking forward to leading this business at what is an exciting time for the industry and the MultiChoice Group," says Nancy Matimu in a statement.

Maharage Chande, MultiChoice Africa northern region director, says "Our strategy is to continuously provide customers with more of their favourite content and thus providing unmatched value. This new appointment will play a major role in delivering the experience our customers deserve, core to our corporate culture".

Nancy Matimu has an MBA in Strategic Management from Strathmore University, a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Kenyatta University and a Post Graduate Diploma (CIM) in Marketing.

Nancy Matimu is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program (AMP) & Chief Executive Program (CEP) from Strathmore, IESE and Lagos Business Schools.

MultiChoice Kenya takes financial TV channels CNBC Africa and Bloomberg away from DStv Compact subscribers.

MultiChoice Kenya has taken away the business news TV channels CNBC Africa (DStv 410) and Bloomberg (DStv 411) from DStv Compact subscribers as part of what the pay-TV operator calls a "refresh" of the DStv Compact package in the East African country.

MultiChoice gave no explanation for removing CNBC Africa and Bloomberg from DStv Compact. Since December the two news channels are now only available on the DStv Compact Plus and DStv Premium packages in Kenya.

"As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance our customers' television viewing experience and delight them with content that resonates with them, MultiChoice did a content refresh to its DStv and GOtv offerings on 13 November 2019," MultiChoice says in a statement.

MultiChoice in Kenya, Zambia, Ghana announces DStv price cuts for all DStv subscriptions from September.

MultiChoice is lowering DStv subscription prices for DStv subscribers in Zambia, Kenya, Ghana - and possibly in more African countries - for all DStv bouquets from 1 September 2017.

No price reduction has been announced for DStv in South Africa.

"This substantial price reduction across our DStv packages reinforces our commitment to ensuring that our customers receive the best possible access to great entertainment and outstanding value," says Kobus Bezuidenhout, regional director for MultiChoice Investment Holdings (MIH) West & Central Africa.


In Kenya DStv Premium will be cut by 3.42% to Sh7,900 and DStv Compact Plus by 4.15% Sh5,200.

DStv Compact is reduced to Sh3,200 and DStv Access by 9.52% to Sh950.

MultiChoice Africa said the DStv price reduction in Kenya is due to the strengthening of the Kenyan shilling against the American dollar. MultiChoice Africa's GOtv subscriptions for its digital terrestrial TV service will remain unchanged.

According to Eric Odipo, MultiChoice Kenya managing director, the MultiChoice Kenya price cut is as a result of the improving Kenya Shilling against the dollar.

"The majority of our input costs are in US dollars and we hope we will not experience any further currency devaluations or other unexpected increases in costs for the remainder of the year. It is also a way of rewarding our customers for their loyalty and support," says Eric Odipo.


In Zambia DStv Premium is reduced by 3.42% to K790, DStv Compact Plus is cut a whopping 16.04% to K450, DStv Compact is reduced by 6.54% to K300, DStv Family is going down 2.43% to K200 and DStv Access is reduced by 7.4% to K100.

According to Ngoza Kasunga, MultiChoice Zambia acting managing director, the reduction in that country isn't based on currencies like fluctiations in the value of the Kwacha, but on a value proposition.

"MultiChoice continuously reviews its packages ans price points in the dynamic market conditions with the interests of our customers at heart and with one objective in mind – to delight customers by constantly offering them more value," said Ngoza Kasunga.

"We are delivering more value to our customers by giving them access to amazing local and international content at a price they can afford."

"The business recognizes that we are living in changing economic times and wants to reward customers for their ongoing loyalty and support. In April 2016, we had a 'no price increases' or price lock on all packages in order to provide relief to our customers in the current tough economic conditions."

Ngoza Kasunga at a breakfast press briefing held on Tuesday in Lusaka, said MultiChoice Zambia "doesn't price based on what competitors are doing".

Should Zambia's Kwacha not depreciate and production costs remain the same, the new MultiChoice Zambia prices for DStv subscriptions will remain in place until MultiChoice Zambia holds its next price review in April of 2018.


In Ghana Cecil Sunka-Mills, MultiChoice Ghana general manager in a statement said MultiChoice Ghana is lowering DStv subscription fees to make DStv more affordable.

"We want to do our bit by adjusting the price of their DStv packages to make them more affordable while adding more value."

"The majority of our input costs are in US dollars and we hope we won't experience any further currency devaluations or other unexpected increases in costs for the remainder of the year."
