Former senior manager at SABC2's Muvhango soap arrested and in court over alleged fraud and theft of R3.3 million over 5 years.

A former senior manager of the SABC2 show Muvhango has appeared in court on Monday after he was arrested for allegedly stealing more than R3 million from creator and executive producer Duma Ndlovu's Venda weekday soap.

The man who hasn't yet pleaded and can't be named yet, appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Johannesburg on Monday.

He was arrested on Sunday on charges of theft and defrauding the production company Word of Mouth Productions of over R3.3 million over a 5 year period.

The case has been postponed to 17 October for a bail application and the man remains in custody.

Besides arranging shoots, the manager was responsible for securing invoices and signing receipts from service providers.

He allegedly created a string of false service providers over the course of 2012 to 2017 who were then paid by him from "petty cash" after he would first transfer the money into his own bank account.

According to the charge sheet the accused "created fictitious service providers and/or names and/or persons and would, from time to time, pay out cash from the petty cash while pretending to pay service providers and/or persons".

"The accused failed to give a detailed account of the recipients of the money and also could not give a sufficient description of the purpose of such payments".
