BREAKING. kykNET on DStv set to become a high definition (HD) channel from 12 August.

kykNET (DStv 144) on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform will finally become a high definition (HD) channel from Tuesday 12 August.

kykNET's switch from a standard definition (SD) to HD channel is a slow-but-sure switch-over process which started to become self-evident since 2013 when kykNET quietly switched to the 16:9 aspect ratio in January 2013; then refreshed its on-air look at the beginning of last month, June 2014.

There's been no word yet from kykNET to the press regarding the HD upgrade.

UPDATE Wednesday 13:41 - In response to a media enquiry kykNET says on 12 August kykNET will be made available as a HD channel.

"Viewers with HD decoders will find kykNET in high definition on channel 144 on DStv, while viewers with standard decoders will continue to receive the standard definition version".

No word yet on whether the kykNET HD logo is changing, or when the decision was made to upgrade the general entertainment Afrikaans language TV channel on DStv.

"It's wonderful news for us and our viewers," says Karen Meiring, M-Net director for Afrikaans channels.

"The switch-over to kykNET will be seamless. Our content producers have been working for a long time with cameras and production equipment enabling them to deliver programmes in HD," says Karen Meiring.

MultiChoice is now also commenting in the statement with Mark Rayner, MultiChoice's chief operating officer (COO) saying that "a lot of our Afrikaans subscribers have been with us since the start of DStv. This is our way of saying thank you for all the years of support and of course to add more value to their viewing pleasure".
