50 public broadcasters across Europe demand that Greece's shut-down public broadcaster ERT be reopened.

Fifty public broadcasters across Europe are jointly demanding that the Greek government reverse its shocking decision to shut down Greece's public broadcaster ERT which led on Tuesday night at midnight this week to ERT World, ERT's global TV channel to suddenly disappear from MultiChoice's DStv pay-TV platform as it did in countries around the world.

In a joint statement serving as an open letter and a remarkable show of solidarity and support, 50 public broadcasters across Europe are rallying behind ERT and blasting the Greek government's sudden closure of ERT.

"We, as directors general of Europe's public broadcasters express our profound dismay at the action taken by the Greek government on Tuesday 11 June in shutting down ERT with immediate effect."

"This undemocratic and unprofessional action of the Greek government undermines the existence of public service media in Greece and its independence from the government," says the statement underwritten by Europe's biggest public broadcasters ranging from France Television to the BBC who all form part of the European Broadcasting Union.

"We strongly urge the Greek prime minister to immediately reverse this decision, allowing ERT to go back on the air in Greece."
