Exactly as I broke the news RIGHT HERE last month, comes the announcement that MultiChoice will be adding a third high definition (HD) SuperSport channel in the form of SuperSport 3 HD on channel 176 from Friday 8 April.
Exactly as I've explained the new SuperSport HD feed launching on 8 April 2011 will actually become the SuperSport 2 HD channel with the channel number remaining as DStv channel 174. The existing SuperSport 2 HD which hosts English Premier League (EPL) will become the new SuperSport 3 HD and will have a new channel number of DStv 176.
Exactly as I've reported, SuperSport 1 HD will remain on DStv channel 171 and show a variety of sports including local and international rugby, PSL football, UEFA Champions League, tennis majors, European Tour, US PGA golf, F1 and MotoGP.
SuperSport 2 HD on DStv channel 174 that shows the English Premier League will see that move to the new 3rd HD SuperSport channel. SuperSport 2 HD will show cricket, Bundesliga soccer, PSL soccer, Europa League soccer, tennis majors, Champions League soccer, F1 and MotoGP.
SuperSport 3 HD will now show the EPL for 24 hours per day. SuperSport says a limited amount of programming, particularly legacy matches will be in Standard Definition (SD) because of their historical nature.
Here is what is new that SuperSport says: M-Net HD (DStv 170) will be used for sport on Saturdays between 14:00 and 19:00 - mainly for rugby matches but also some soccer and PGA golf. ''This channel will only be used in the event that the regular SuperSport HD channels cannot accommodate additional sport,'' says SuperSport.
''We made a commitment to our viewers and now we are delivering,'' said Andre de Villiers, SuperSport's marketing director. ''Sporting events are increasingly being produced in HD and SuperSport is committed to bringing more of this broadcast technology to the market. Sport in particular, lends itself to the excellent quality offered by HD.''
''HD channels are becoming the television standard globally. We don't want our subscribers to be left behind. Our focus is on rolling out as many HD channels onto the DStv platform as possible,'' says Aletta Alberts, MultiChoice's general manager for content.
