SABC3 and Top Billing's Presenter Search on 3 returning for a 4th TV turn in May, will once again look for new on-air talent to join the channel's shows.
SABC3 and Top Billing's Presenter Search on 3 will return from May for a 4th time, once again looking to add new South African TV talent to joins shows like Top Billing, Expresso or Afternoon Express.
The Presenter Search on 3 will once again be produced by Tswelopele Productions with the search for a new presenter or presenters to join various SABC3 shows that is taking place to co-incide with the 25th anniversary of the venerable weekly gloss entertainment and lifestyle magazine show Top Billing that started on the SABC in 1992.
Previous seasons of the highly popular Presenter Search on 3 have made bona fide TV stars and celebrities of Simba Mhere and Jonathan Boynton-Lee with thousands of hopefuls who queued across the country in 2010 and in 2012 when it known as My Top Billing Dream.
The last season of Presenter Search on 3 was held in 2015 with the winners who were Zoe Brown who joined Expresso, Danilo Acquisto who joined Afternoon Express and Jade Hubner who joined Top Billing.
The show was however also a star vehicle launching pad for Chris Jaftha who made the Top 5 and was picked up soon afterwards by Top Billing as a presenter as well anyway, and who is currently also the co-presenter of Dancing with the Stars South Africa on M-Net (DStv 101).
Likewise Mishka Patel was picked up to join Tswelopele Productions' weekly Afrikaans magazine show Pasella on SABC2.
The presenter of the new Presenter Search on 3 will include among others Jonathan Boynton-Lee, Ayanda Thabethe and the evergreen Jeannie D.
Contestants will once again be put through their paces in grueling real-life TV challenges before and behind-the-scenes with various presenting tasks taking place in-studio and shot outside on-location to not just test the telegenic mettle of those who want to be on TV but also their adaptability and how they respond to unexpected production curveballs.

The Generations actress Manaka Ranaka has knocked down and killed a schoolgirl in a car crash, while the speeding driver who killed the Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere on SABC3 claims his car was "faulty".
This part Friday the SABC1 Generations -The Legacy actress Manaka Ranaka ran over and killed a schoolgirl on the R554 road to Leondale near the highway in Roodekop, according to the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services.
The 18-year old grade 12 girl, Millicent Mbonani from the Leondale High School died on the scene when Manaka Ranaka in her BMW crashed into her and killed her.

Meanwhile the speeding Preshalin Naidoo who killed Simba Mhere and Kady-Shay O-Bryan in January on the William Nicol Drive offramp from the N1 highway in Johannesburg in his Polo GTI, is claiming in court the accident happened because the vehicle was faulty.
Preshalin Naidoo in the Randburg Magistrate's Court claims he lot control of his speeding vehicle due to "a suspension problem" on the front right side of his car.
"To say mechanical failure is the cause at this late stage is disappointing news for the family without seeing any support documents," says Ryan Harrison, on behalf of Simba Mhere's family.
"There has never been allegations of mechanical failure of the vehicle."
Prehalin Naidoo is facing two counts of culpable homicide.

Simba Mhere memorial impacted by Eskom loadshedding; tearful friends and family struggle through emotional tributes for Top Billing presenter.
While the late Simba Mhere's memorial service on Thursday afternoon was impacted by sudden Eskom loadshedding at the sad, highly emotional and poignant event, friends and family at the Rhema Bible Church in Randburg gathered and struggled through emotional tributes for the Top Billing presenter.
Simba Mhere (26) was killed on Saturday morning in a car crash with shock reverberating through South Africa's TV and entertainment industry; a TV presenter beloved by millions of viewers remembered for his "loud roar and gentle humility".
Besides family and friends the auditorium was filled with actors, celebrities, dignitaries and ordniary South Africans who didn't know Simba Mhere personally but who've watched his weekly inserts on the weekly lifestyle show".
Simba Mhere's memorial service was hit by unexpected loadshedding but the church quickly restored electricity.
Top Billing presenter Ursula Chikane was the programme director and valiantly brought her best presenting skills honed over years to the memorial service of "our Sims" but even her voice quivered - until eventually even she too could no longer hold back the tears, through deep breaths and pauses as she broke down when talking about "our baby brother" midway through the memorial service which lasted just over three hours.
"A young man; gone at 26; but who will not be forgotten for many, many years to come," said Ursula Chikane.
"There is not one person who could have been prepared for the heartbreaking event that unfolded early on Saturday morning and the devastation that would follow that indeed that our Simba had passed away so tragically and so suddenly," said Ursula Chikane.
"No matter how his star was rising, he never let it go to his head. And every assignment he was given for Top Billing, he treated it as if it was his very last. You could see how much he loved doing what he did, and for him it absolutely was not a job. It was his passion. And it was his calling," said Ursula Chikane.
"Simba to us was the total and consummate professional".
"In the over two decades that I've been with Top Billing we've seen presenters come and go. And the main reason why presenters go is because they develop a really nasty attitude. Simba didn't even develop one percent of a nasty attitude," said Ursula Chikane.
Simba Mhere's father Joseph Mhere proudly spoke about the son he lost. "I have loved every moment with my son from when he was a little boy. I'd have loved to take credit for bringing Simba to South Africa. But I believe Simba brought us here so he could spread his wings. We have asked God to give us the grace to accept what we cannot change".
Close friend Russell Lang who knew Simba Mhere since they were pre-teens said: "Simba had schooled me in one of the most valuable lessons in life. No matter what position you're in, you can always follow your dream and you can successfully achieve it".
Veteran executive producer Patience Stevens from Tswelopele Productions who hardly ever talks in public and who've produced the popular show for 22 years for the SABC, got up on the stage for Simba Mhere, to emotionally bring tribute to the young presenter she found in a TV presenter search in 2010.
"Simba was a gentleman, who people could look up to and relate to," said Patience Stevens. "It's been an emotional rollercoaster and its an absolute tragedy for all of us."I hope our God will strengthen all of us to deal with the passing of one of the most precious people I have ever met".
The most heartbreaking part of Simba Mhere's memorial service was when co-presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee went to the mic stand.
The Top Billing presenter who calls Simba Mhere "my brother" was visibly stressed and constantly struggled to make it through what he wanted to say in a tearful voice and taking breaths to try and keeps his composure - an emotionally raw and unvarnished departure from the polished presentations on television viewers see him deliver on a weekly basis.
"We pretty much spoke every day," said Jonathan Boynton-Lee. "I said it was my dream to be Batman. But really Simba ... its my dream to be you".
Ursula Chikane closed Simba Mhere's memorial service in the most perfect way and the only manner it really could and should have been done - with an adaptation of the traditional Top Billing closer: "Goodnight,Simba. And God bless".

Top Billing presenter Bonang Matheba on Simba Mhere: 'Death has robbed me of a brother, a colleague, a pillar and a friend'.
"Death has robbed me of a brother."
Bonang Matheba, Top Billing presenter is part of the TV family mourning the loss of friend and co-presenter Simba Mhere (26).
Simba Mhere died on impact together with his friend Kady-Shay O'Bryan early on Saturday morning when a car crashed into the driver's side of the vehicle Simba Mhere was driving on William Nicol Road near the N1.
"I am still confused and trying to make sense about everything," Bonang Matheba tells TV with Thinus.
"No matter how many times you experience the horror that is death, one can never get used to it."
"Death has robbed me of a brother, a colleague, a pillar and a friend," says Bonang Matheba.
"An angel has returned home, leaving us all devastated and confused, but he will always live amongst us, in our hearts. It is still surreal, all dreamy and even shooting the Top Billing tribute link for this Thursday didn't help.
"I still can't believe you are gone Big Guy. I will cherish your memory till we meet again".
Top Billing presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee is set to talk for the first time publicly about Simba Mhere on television on Thursday morning on SABC3's Expresso.
Following Thursday afternoon's memorialservice for Simba Mhere at the Rhema Bible Church in Randburg at 15:00, viewers will be able to tune in for a special tribute episode of Top Billing on Thursday evening at 20:30 on SABC3.

Inside a production company's private pain: After Simba Mhere's death Tswelopele Productions mourns the loss of one of their own.
Theirs is a world of selling make-belief. Fantasy. An hour a week of the good life and indulgent escapism: jetsetting foreign locales, massive mansions and beautiful people. Neverending celebrity parties.
For the past 22 years on the South
African public broadcaster Top Billing
had only one aim: to whisk ordinary viewers away for one hour per week from their
ordinary lives – lives where bills are waiting to be paid, bad hair days are
much more numerous than Jeannie D's perfect locks, and where death and pain and tragedy stalk us – to a Neverland place. A nebulous TV wonderland where youth, wealth
and champagne flow freely and designer everything is everywhere.
But this past Saturday morning not even Top Billing could escape the painful
ordinary life – the real harsh, cruel one where a selfish, speeding, drunk or
maybe not drunk driver (we won’t know since the police didn’t do an alcohol
test) rammed a vehicle into the driver’s side of the car where Simba Mhere was
behind the wheel and instantly killed two people.
At Tswelopele Productions, a finely run
production company in Westlake Business Park in Tokai, the past 20 years has
seen a script for everything at Top
Billing under the fine-tuned hand of co-executive producers Patience
Stevens and Basetsana Kumalo.
Tswelopele has built up, from scratch, a
go-to plan for basically every conceivable production crisis (and there’s been
many over the decades): from delayed and cancelled and missed flights, to weather, to sickness; from pedantic celebrities,
cancelled shoots, no-shows, can’t-do’s and no visas, to altered deadlines and suddenly
moved up episode delivery dates and even postponed timeslots (part of the inexplicable
vagaries of the SABC).
On Saturday morning at 05:10am however one of the harsh realities of real life – the world where a beautiful, vibrant
life can be cut short in an instant – punctured the finely manicured TV machine
which has over years the honed the ability to bring viewers only the good side of life.
When Simba Mhere died there was no go-to
for the production company; no script for the pain.
This coming Thursday night on SABC3 at
20:30 the show that focuses on the vibrant, the celebrated and the beautiful, will deal with death on television for the first time in its history in the
only way it knows how: by remembering the loss of one of its own.
The South African lifestyle show which
never ever showed us sadness is now filled with sorrow.
'A pervasive sense of loss'
Simba Mhere's dad who was also in the
car during the accident which took his son’s life will be on Top Billing this Thursday – a symbol of
what the showstopper production lost.
Presenters already started to record
tributes, with Bonang Matheba, Ursula Chikane and others who couldn't keep back the tears.
On Thursday night the popular lifestyle magazine show that all others
on South television are measured by and which brought happiness and joy and
possibility to millions of viewers weekly, will – for the first time ever –
make them cry.
Tswelopele Productions hasn’t responded
to any media enquiries since Simba Mhere's senseless death Saturday morning,
but insiders were willing to talk about the "utter shock, numbness and
devastation" of the production company's private, and yet so public, pain.
"There's a pervasive sense of loss," said a longtime Tswelopele production insider. "This hit everybody hard,
especially Patience and Bassie. People are concerned about Jonathan too," said
the insider about Top Billing presenter
Jonathan Boynton-Lee who flew back to Johannesburg to be with Simba Mhere's family.
"They really were like brothers, it wasn't
some kind of an act," said another source. "They were both sortof the 'little
brother' of each other. At the same time. They would mercilessly rib each other but underneath it they were
fiercely protective [of each other]."
"They were both essentially individually hand-picked
by Patience through the presenter searches and to this day they felt like they
were 'the new ones' who constantly wanted to prove themselves I guess – to their
families, to their fans; even to the show, especially Patience.
"For them it was always in a sense 'them' against the world. You saw it every time you saw Simba and Jonathan's fierce work ethic. A really deep-seated need to make those around them proud. And so extremely loyal. Everybody's heartbroken over Simba
and also what it's done to Jonathan".
A TV moment that can't be scripted
The unexpected death will likely cast a
shadow over the new Presenter Search on 3 on SABC3. The show is looking for
three presenters for three different Tswelopele produced shows – one of them being Top Billing.
Although planned and announced before
Simba Mhere's passing, instead of an additional new TV face to join the crop of existing presenters, the reality show will now
feel like it's looking for a replacement for Simba Mhere - someone to fill his (literally) big
shoes.
Producers are already thinking of how to properly honour Simba Mhere's legacy
through that upcoming reality show.
In fact, Top Billing's tight turn-around productions schedule can now
actually do with two new presenters, although the company will stick with
finding and adding only one to the weekly flagship production.
This coming Thursday the Tswelopele
produced SABC sunshine show will also turn sombre when Jonathan Boynton-Lee is set to
make a live appearance on the "feel good breakfast show" Expresso done from Cape Town. He will for the first time talk publicly about his grief and
the loss of his "brother" Simba Mhere in a safe and protected TV environment.
And again it will be a TV moment that can't be scripted.
"It's just so very hard," laments a
source. "Everybody working here are miracle workers. Real miracle workers.
Day in and day out – the impossible. People here do and create and achieve the
impossible even under the most trying conditions and circumstances."
"But nobody is able to take the tears and pain away".

TACKY TRASH: Disgusting J&B Met tells people to 'enjoy' the event after the passing of Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere; forced to apologise.
Simba Mhere died this morning - and not like the deplorable J&B Met 2015 tweeted "last night" - in a horrific car crash.
After an avalanche of criticism on social media for its shameless and extremely insensitive self-promotion the J&B Met 2015 finally apologised on Twitter, saying "We the J&B would like to apologise on the insensitivity of our previous tweet. We are rectifying the situation from our side and once again we sincerely apologise for the remark".
The damage however was done.
"Pity you had to be tweeted, told there is a screengrab, and told to apologise. Hope you shun the callous person responsible," said commentator Eusebius McKaiser.
Several celebrities left the J&B Met today early and several were complete no-shows as news about Simba Mhere's death spread who was on his way to the Oliver Tambo International Airport early this morning to fly to the event in Cape Town.
Simba Mhere's death dampened the entire mood of the J&B Met 2015's well-heeled who didn't want to be seen partying it up and celebrating amidst the loss of one of their own.
The Top Billing crew and presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee also left the J&B Met, with Simba Mhere's death which became the number one topic of conversation under the remaining socialites.
BREAKING. SABC3's Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere (26) dead in shocking car accident, 'devastating loss' to SA TV industry.
Simbarashe Mhere known as simply "Simba" was only 26.
Eight people died in the car crash in which Simba Mhere, the son of missionary parents, was killed on Saturday morning on the N3 near the Marlboro offramp. His father and a friend was with him in the car at the time of the accident during which another car crashed into his vehicle.
The driver who caused the crash will be charged with reckless driving according to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).
Simba Mhere was on his way to the Oliver Tambo International Airport to fly to Cape Town's J&B Met this afternoon. In 2013 Simba Mhere was voted most stylist man in South Africa, and in 2014 favourite TV presenter.
Several celebrities left, and several were no-shows at the 2015 J&B Met on Saturday afternoon as news quickly spread about Simba Mhere's death.
The Top Billing crew and presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee left the J&B Met after news about Simba Mhere's passing became known, where the atmosphere turned sombre and depressing.
"It is with awful shock and terrible pain that we reflect on the passing of our beloved Simba Mhere," says Top Billing, produced by Tswelopele Productions.
"Simba Mhere will forever be an irreplaceable member of the Top Billing family. May your soul rest in peace dear Simba. We all loved you and we are truly heartbroken".
"It is with great sadness that SABC3 received the news about the passing of Simba Mhere, presenter on SABC3's Top Billing and Presenter Search on 3," says the SABC in a statement.
"Our beloved colleague and friend passed away in a tragic car accident earlier today. Simba Mhere brought great character and charisma in everything he did and for that he will be sorely missed."
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, Simba Mhere's friends and associates, his fans, viewers of SABC3 and the rest of South Africa."
"We wish to plead with the public to give the family some privacy during this sad time. SABC3 will communicate all the relevant details in due course."
The longtime Top Billing presenter Janez Vermeiren who've worked with Simba Mhere tells TV with Thinus his death is "a devastating loss".
"For us to lose a human being of that caliber is devastating. I was standing in the shower after hearing the news and going through all of the conversations we've had over the years - his dreams and aspirations. He had so many big dreams and plans that's shattered now that he's in heaven".
"It's devastating to lose someone so nice. In this industry you get a lot of people who are nice to you in front of you but then not so nice when you're back is turned. Simba Mhere was nice 100% of the time. A devastating loss," says Janez Vermeiren.
The charismatic presenter was a TV natural and became a Top Billing presenter after winning the Top Billing Presenter Search in 2010 after he was chosen as the winner out of 5 000 contestants who entered.
Simba Mhere's untimely and shocking death comes ironically just two days after a Top Billing special episode was broadcast on Thursday night, and which will be repeated on Sunday on SABC3 at 12:30, in which both Simba Mhere and co-presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee (who won in 2012) both looked back and reflected on how the show has changed their lives.
Editor's note: I've met Simba Mhere just after he won and became a Top Billing presenter in 2010, and saw and ran into him several times since then. What I will never forget is a private off-the-record dinner I had with him at the Crystal Towers hotel in Cape Town in 2013.
With the notebook packed away, the wine and conversation flowed. We could all be just us. Not presenter. Not journalist covering television. He laughed with abandon.
He told things I will never share, about his experiences about the TV world and the TV business as someone who entered it and was amazed, shocked, horrified and dazzled by it every day and how he didn't take anything of it for granted. He loved Top Billing and he loved being a TV presenter and the doors it opened. May Simba Mhere rest in peace.

EXCLUSIVE. Presenter Search on 3 to return to SABC3 as channel looks for 3 new TV presenters; nationwide auditions starting in February.
Start practicing walking and talking! TV with Thinus can exclusively break the news that the Top Billing Presenter Search will be back (soon) for a third season - renamed Presenter Search on 3 - in which SABC3 will be looking for not just one but three brand-new presenters to work on Top Billing and across various different SABC3 shows.
Once again produced by Tswelopele Productions responsible for shows like Top Billing and Expresso on SABC3, the search for three new presenters this time will once again happen on television as a reality competition show in which the top finalists will have to prove their mettle in various travel, television and interviewing challenges.
While Presenter Search on 3 has not yet been officially announced by neither SABC3 nor Tswelopele Productions, TV with Thinus has learnt that it will likely start on 6 March on SABC3, exactly halfway through the nationwide audition process which will then have been filmed by that time.
While contractual details are still being ironed out before the official announcement and with Top Billing in reversioned repeat episodes for the moment, viewers can already start practising their presenter skills.
According to insiders with knowledge of the upcoming show, the details are being finalised for the third season before the official announcement which will be done soon. "With SABC3's recently introduced new look the plan is to go even bigger and better with not just one but three new faces for SABC3's signature shows," a source tells me.
"You don't have to be able to sing but you can still become a TV star and experience a world most viewers don't have access to through hard work and just being yourself as you channel your experiences".
The previous two seasons of the highly popular Top Billing Presenter Search have made bona fide TV stars and celebrities of Simba Mhere and Jonathan Boynton-Lee with thousands of hopefuls who queued across the country in 2010 and in 2012 when it was renamed My Top Billing Dream.
Nationwide auditions for the Presenter Search on 3 will take place in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Bloemfontein during February and March, after which the show will choose a Top 30.
The Top 30 will be whittled down to the Top 12 who will then compete in Presenter Search on 3 over seven weeks in various challenges on the reality show while they stay in luxury accomodation for the chance to become a presenter on SABC3 on Top Billing, Expresso and an as yet unannounced third new local TV lifestyle magazine show.
The whole day Presenter Search on 3 audition process is planned to kick off in Cape Town on 13 February and plans to end in Port Elizabeth on 22 March at venues which will still be announced.
Once again contestants will have to dress up to impress and will have to stand in line for their chance to show the judges that they've got the personality, style and above all the tenacity to make it as a glamorous, yet hard-working TV star in the cut-throat television business.
Contestants will have to prepare a short speech or "link" - something to say or introduce themselves or a story, as they would if they're a TV presenter, and the judges are looking for creative and original presentations.
