Shaleen Surtie Richards: I Am Who I Am documentary scheduled for Wednesday night on M-Net as MultiChoice's TV tribute collection of content expands after iconic actress' death - latest programming listing across channels.

MultiChoice, M-Net and kykNET are expanding the tribute collection of content this week scheduled to honour the on-screen legacy of actress Shaleen Surtie-Richards (66) who unexpectedly died on Monday, with the documentary Shaleen Surtie-Richards: I Am Who I Am that will be shown on several TV channels, a Carte Blanche insert, as well as a newly-added Saturday morning retrospective about her life on Ontbytsake.

Initially announced, her iconic film Fiela se Kind will no longer be shown this weekend, replaced with one of her latest films, Swirl that will be broadcast on fliekNET (DStv 149) on Sunday at 20:30.

South Africa's TV and film industry was shocked yesterday about the passing of the iconic actress who died in her sleep in a guest house in Edgemeade, Cape Town where she stayed while filming scenes for a recurring role on the Penguin Films produced telenovela Arendsvlei on kykNET & Kie (DStv 145).

MultiChoice will broadcast a never-before-seen documentary Shaleen Surtie-Richards: I Am Who I Am on M-Net (DStv 101) on Wednesday 9 June at 19:30.

Shaleen Surtie-Richards: I Am Who I Am on M-will again be shown - and simulcast - on kykNET (DStv 144) and kykNET & Kie (DStv 145) on Sunday 13 June at 20:00. 

Shaleen Surtie-Richards: I Am Who I Am will become available on MultiChoice's video streaming service Showmax on Thursday 10 June 2021.


"The documentary was commissioned to celebrate a South African icon and was in its final stages of post-production when the news of her passing was announced," says Diana Lucas, director and executive producer of the film.

"It was an honour for the team to pay tribute and spend time with Shaleen in the making of this film. Her incredible story is historically significant for the people of South Africa."

Shaleen Surtie-Richards: I Am Who I Am revisits Shaleen's life from her childhood in Upington and her first baby steps on the Upington school stage to far grander stages and greater audiences.

Marc Lottering, Sandra Prinsloo, Pieter-Dirk Uys, Brümilda van Rensburg, Katinka Heyns, Patricia de Lille, Bobby Heaney, Kevin Smith and others share their memories and stories of a woman who lived her life in defiance of stereotypes.

"I don’t have time for pretence in my life. So, if you ask me who am I. Then, I will tell you, I am who am," says Shaleen Surtie-Richards in the film.

Shaleen Surtie-Richards was also recently interviewed by fellow Egoli: Place of Gold co-star Hannes van Wyk for a special Kwêla: Hannes aan Huis episode which will be broadcast on Tuesday 8 June 2021 at 21:00 on kykNET (DStv 144).

On kykNET & Kie (DStv 145), the team of KLOP! will be paying tribute to the legendary icon with friends and colleagues such as South African actors Christo Davids, Zenobia Kloppers and her Arendsvlei co-stars. The kykNET telenovela Arendsvlei was the last production Shaleen Surtie-Richards worked on.

Fiela se Kind film director Katina Heyns on Shaleen Surtie-Richards: 'She had all of us laughing the one moment, and weeping the next.'

The iconic South African director Katina Heyns says that the iconic actress Shaleen Surtie-Richards (66) who unexpectedly died on Monday "had all of us laughing the one moment, and weeping the next".

Shaleen Surtie-Richards whose two most iconic roles include Nenna in Egoli on M-Net (DStv 101) and Fiela in the 1988 film Fiela se Kind, passed away on Monday in a Cape Town guest house from unknown causes - although she didn't take her own life - as she was filming for her role in the Arendsvlei telenovela on kykNET & Kie (DStv 145). 

Not only was the hugely successful Fiela se Kind, based on the novel of Dalene Matthee, the first for Katinka Heyns in the director's chair, but also the first on-screen role for Shaleen Surtie-Richards who lept from stage to screen in the emotional story.

On Monday Katina Heyns reminisced with TVwithThinus after the passing of Shaleen Surtie-Richards, and shared a brief oral history of how Shaleen came to be cast as Fiela in her film and how she knew that the actress would be just the right fit for the role of Fiela Komoetie.

"Shaleen was new to the scene and in her various roles on stage she was quickly garnering a lot of attention and acclaim. However, I wasn't sure whether she would have been able to make a successful transition from stage to screen," Katinka said.

"If you find success on stage, you're not necessarily a great actor in front of the camera. And the character of Fiela is an extrovert - someone who plays outwards to the outside world as a character. So it was a bit of a sensitive area."

"I knew that I had to be honest with Shaleen which I did - and I told her that I will be doing further auditions. And I mean - just there she could have gotten miffed with me but she just accepted it and after a lot of further auditions I just knew: This person really is the closest to a Fiela."

"There is a big centre point to the character - the sensitivity and the heart and the soul of the character of Fiela - so we just did one single scene between Shaleen Surtie-Richards and Jan Ellis. And in that moment I immediately knew that, yes, Shaleen would be able to do the transition."

"Shaleen Surtie-Richards is a fantastic, very honest person and I think her honesty as a human being made that she was able to play any character if she liked the character and understood the character," says Katinka Heyns.

"Dalene Matthee who wrote Fiela se Kind liked Shaleen Surtie-Richards a lot, and on the Fiela se Kind film set Shaleen was always the team's cheerleader - she had all of us laughing the one moment; and weeping the next".

"Then she would arrive at premiere night and you wouldn't recognise her - with the lipstick and the nails and the whole transformation she would undergo. It was as if she could switch from one persona to the next so quickly and seamlessly."

"After Fiela se Kind I didn't have contact with Shaleen again because she made enormous strides in the industry and went on to do a lot of other stage and TV and film roles."

"But in Fiela se Kind we shared our joint passion for telling stories and I think we will both be forever grateful that we shared that film together as our first movie project - because Fiela se Kind is my first official film as a director and Shaleen Surtie-Richards' first official main role in film. And forever it will cast us together like in stone."

Shaleen Surtie-Richards' family on her death and legacy of love: She not only lived in our hearts but in the hearts of this great nation.

The family of Shaleen Surtie-Richards whose shocking death at 66 on Monday morning stunned South Africa’s TV and film industry and everyone who watched and loved her characters she portrayed on stage, TV and in the movies, said that the beloved actress who was their aunt, sister, cousin and niece lived not just in their hearts but in the hears of all South Africans.

Shaleen Surtie-Richards, known for iconic roles like Nenna in Egoli on M-Net (DStv 101) and Fiela Komoetie in the film Fiela se Kind, passed away in a guest house in Cape Town where she was staying while filming for her role in kykNET’s Arendsvlei telenovela.

She was supposed to go to get her Covid-19 vaccine on Monday but when her family arrived they found her dead. The cause of her death has not been established but her family says she did not take her own life.

“Today, the Surtie family has to confirm with great sadness and utter shock the passing of Shaleen Surtie-Richards,” Alistair Izobell, the family’s spokesperson told TVwithThinus.

“We have lost a sister, an aunt, a cousin and a niece and we are trying to process, to come to terms and to still our broken hearts. We understand that she was not just only in our hearts but in the hearts of this great nation and we thank you for your love and support and respect as we prepare for her final curtain call”.

Nominees announced for 2020's 14th South African Film and Television Awards as NFVF looks to improve the credibility of the Saftas.

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) announced the nominees of the upcoming 14th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) on Friday morning at a media event held at The Mall of Africa, with M-Net's telenovela The River on 1Magic (DStv 103) that lead the nominations in the TV category with 15 nods, and the film Fiela se Kind that scored 11 nods as the feature film with the most nominations.

The SABC's soap Generations on SABC1, 7de Laan on SABC2, as well as Isidingo on SABC3 were all locked out of this year's Saftas after they failed to enter the South African awards show.

The production companies Word of Mouth Productions producing SABC2's Muvhango, as well as Ferguson Films producing The Queen and The Throne for M-Net's Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) dropped their Saftas boycott they've maintained for several years and entered their respective soaps and telenovelas again.

Besides having discussions with production companies who have been boycotting the awards show, the Safta organisers have also relooked and refined the judging guidelines for the awards show, with the various scriptwriting categories which are being returned to the main (and televised) award ceremony after they were abruptly dumped last year.

The various Saftas categories have also been relooked, adjusted and reduced to 70.

The 14th South African Film and Television Awards that is moving back from Sun City to Johannesburg, will take place at the Johannesburg’s Sandton Convention Centre over two-nights with the Craft Awards set for Friday 27 March and Main Awards taking place on Saturday 28 March and which will be broadcast live on South African television.

In television the telenovela The River scored 15 nominations, followed by Isibaya and the 4th season of Lockdown which all got 11 nods, and The Republic grabbing 10 nominations.

"I would like to congratulate all our 2020 SAFTAs nominees for telling authentic stories that resonate and connect with the people of South Africa," says Makhosazana Khanyile, NFVF CEO.

"As the NFVF we couldn’t be prouder of the immense contribution that these women and men make to the local film and television industry, not forgetting the broadcasters that provide the platforms for these stories to come alive".



"A key priority for us this year was to bring credibility back to the SAFTAs judging process," she says.

"It is no secret that many production companies have voiced their frustration with our appraisal system, some going as far as to boycott the SAFTAs altogether."

"Having taken this feedback to heart, we’ve taken every measure possible to ensure that the judging process is fair, transparent and without bias. Today I’m proud to announce that as a result of these efforts we’ve received over 300 entries for the SAFTAs," says Khosi Khanyile.

Viewer votes will once again decide the categories of Best TV Presenter and the Most Popular Soap/Telenovela.

The 14th South African Film and Television Awards will be hosted at Johannesburg’s Sandton Convention Centre over two-nights: Craft Awards on Friday, 27 March 2020 and Main Awards on Saturday, 28 March 2020 – with the Saturday show broadcast live on television.
