Amazon Studios commissions Nigerian travelogue reality series Ebuka Turns Up Africa with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu produced by Rapid Blue.

by Thinus Ferreira

Amazon Studios has commissioned another original African series, Ebuka Turns Up Africa, from Nigeria, as a travelogue reality show which will debut on the video streaming service in 2024.

In Ebuka Turns Up Africa, an Amazon Prime Video Original, the Nigerian Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, together with Timini Egbuson, Zubby Michael, Jimmie Akinsola, Onoja Adole, and Alistair Englebert Preston travel through Africa "uncovering hidden treasures and testing loyalties and friendships".

Ebuka Turns Up Africa is part of Amazon Studios growing slate of content put in production and acquired from the African continent and is produced by South Africa's Rapid Blue Productions Nigeria, an offshoot of Rapid Blue in South Africa, with Ziyanda Ngcaba and Erika Klopper as the co-executive producers.

The new Nigerian series follows after the disappointing and little-publicised Gangs of Lagos which finally made its debut earlier this year with very little fanfare or media traction as the first Amazon Original film from Africa.

Amazon Studios is also doing a format version of LOL: Last One Laughing Naija, along with a South African version of LOL with Trevor Noah as host.

In a press release, Amazon Studios says "Ebuka Turns Up Africa is a captivating showcase of camaraderie and adventure, as Ebuka undertakes the journey of a lifetime with his guys", describing the upcoming show as "a compelling series that not only transcends borders but reveals the men behind their celebrity personas".

"As our all-star cast ignites their spirit of exploration, personalities clash and tempers flare in a journey across the continent that isn't always smooth sailing."

"The adventure will take the team of intrepid travellers through a variety of experiences, from exploring Africa's most desirable destinations to delving into daring, high-adrenaline activities. Friendships will be tested, as the guys discover the magic of unity."

The press release about Ebuka Turns Up Africa was shared with Africa's media after it was specifically asked for, and only after the show's existence was announced at a panel at 2023's MIPCOM in Cannes yesterday by Ned Mitchell, the head of originals for Amazon Prime Video for the Africa and Middle East region.

Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, head of Nigerian originals at Amazon Studios, was part of the MIPCOM panel with Ned Mitchell where the Ebuka Turns Up Africa announcement was made.

"This is Ebuka and Africa like you've never seen before!"exclaims Ned Mitchell in the press release.

"It's an invitation for audiences to immerse themselves in the heart and soul of Africa. Ebuka Turns Up Africa is a unique celebration of Africa, brought to life by Ebuka and his top squad."

In a prepared quote, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu states "This journey was not only an exciting exploration of Africa, it was an opportunity for audiences to see a different side of me and the guys. Whilst we had a huge amount of fun and plenty of laughs, there were also some pretty intense conflicts - it was one wild adventure!"

Big Brother Naija renewed for a 4th season as MultiChoice Nigeria and M-Net West Africa move production of the 2019 housemates reality series to Lagos, Nigeria to start after the upcoming general elections.

MultiChoice Nigeria and M-Net West Africa on Tuesday announced that a new season of Big Brother Nigeria will be produced in 2019 and that the 4th season of Big Brother Naija will be done in Lagos, Nigeria instead of Johannesburg, South Africa, where existing Big Brother house production facilities have been used until now.

MultiChoice and M-Net announced at a media briefing at the George Hotel in Lagos that auditions for the 4th season of Big Brother Naija will take place on 1 and 2 February in 6 different Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Calabar, Enugu, Benin, Ibadan, Warri and Port Harcourt.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu will again be the host of the upcoming 4th season, with the former housemate who presented the second season in 2017 and the third season that started in January 2018.

The 4th season of Big Brother Naija will be only the second time that Big Brother Naija has been produced outside South Africa since it began in 2006.

Following 2016, the second season in 2017 and the third season in 2018 were both done in South Africa and shown in Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa on DStv's satellite pay-TV platform.

Despite harsh criticism from Nigerian press that doesn't understand basic TV production, MultiChoice and M-Net previously explained that Nigeria doesn't have good enough production facilities to produce Big Brother Naija; that using the existing Big Brother house in South Africa makes production costs cheaper, and that hard to find technical skills, constantly interrupted electricity supply, security issues, and other production issues would make Big Brother Naija's production costs soar if done in Nigeria.

MultiChoice and M-Net on Tuesday didn't explain the change in its stance and why production of Big Brother Naija for its 4th season is moving to Lagos. A new Big Brother house facility is currently being constructed in Lagos.

MultiChoice and M-Net plan to start broadcasting the 4th season of Big Brother Naija after the upcoming general elections in Nigeria for a duration of three months over 90 days.

"This fourth season of Big Brother Naija promises to be even bigger than previous editions and underscores MultiChoice's position as the biggest investor and driver of entertainment content on the continent," says Martin Mabutho, MultiChoice Nigeria's general manager for sales and marketing.

"From a cost perspective, it is always good to share the Big Brother house in South Africa where all the African versions of Big Brother can make use of the house."

"Now we are at the vantage position of hosting the show in Nigeria and give the global standard for which the show is known for. The Big Brother house is currently under construction and will be ready before the kick-off."

REVIEW. The bad - but better - rumpled red carpet broadcast of the 6th 2018 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards pre-show still filled with blunders, a clueless Helen Paul, and many production mistakes.

The still badly done, visibly rumpled, red carpet pre-show of the 6th 2018 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards broadcast on Africa Magic on Saturday evening was again filled with blunders, awkwardly bad production values, and a clueless Helen Paul thinking its funny to be unprepared - although the red carpet production showed improvement in significant ways.

As in previous years, M-Net West Africa and the organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards still visibly found it too difficult to roll out a flat red carpet at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos from where Saturday's awards show ceremony again took place.

A ruffled red carpet showed up several times during the 3-hour pre-show broadcast on the Africa Magic channels on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service, adding to the once-again amateur-looking coverage that this year had Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Sika Osei as the main red carpet hosts.

Both were markedly better than the presenters used in previous years, although Sika Osei seemed mostly unprepared to do actual interviews and often veered off into what's obvious her "safe space" where she just rambles with stream of consciousness monologues.

Sika Osei tends to spout mindless drivel she seems to have learnt by rote through watching too much E! without actually thinking, and that ended up damaging the pre-show like at 35 minutes in with her "The red carpet is really hotting up!" although by that time only 3 short interviews took place and the camera showed them standing in the totally empty hotel foyer.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu was the best thing about the 6th 2018 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards red carpet show, allowing guests to talk, coming across as patiently self-assured and confident, humorous and warm even when he had visible ear-piece trouble and kept going.

The organisers once again brought back the wholly-inadequate Helen Paul. She stood next to the doing-what-he-can under the circumstances, cohort Uti Nwachukwu as the second tier presenters.

Helen Paul, dressed in a feathered aquamarine swirl more appropriate on a sea cruise cabaret director, once again seemed clueless in her costume more appropriate for a character in a kiddies pantomime, and again inflicted the biggest damage on this year's red carpet pre-show.

Helen Paul kept asking inappropriate questions, trying to "funnily sexualising" interviews and showing absolutely no sign of having studied up on any background on the nominees or having heard of the #MeToo movement.

Helen Paul - often cackling at the camera to try and disguise her ineptitude - awkwardly kept asking people about kissing and even egged on two people to kiss in front of her (they started but didn't).

She caused embarrassing moments like asking a former child star - now clearly a young man - nothing about his actual role but inane, irrelevant stuff like: "What school do you go to?" only for him to mutedly respond: "I'm at university".

Helen Paul point-blank asked nominee Folarin "Falz" Falana: "Do you think you will win?"
(He didn't really know what to say.)

Saturday's red carpet coverage immediately started off with sound problems and audio mistakes when a crossing went wrong and with some that kept happening throughout the coverage - although from the outset Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Sika Osei did their best and just kept talking over problems.

Lonre Ojoawa was the red carpet show director, with Busola Komolare, Anu Somatun and Uche Ifeanyi-Ogwu as red carpet segment producers.

None of the red carpet presenters really seemed to know what to ask anybody who wasn't actually Nigerian and the coverage was saturated with a naija-centric approach and references that casual Africa Magic viewers from East and Southern African might not be familiar with, understand or know.

When someone's cellphone literally rang during an interview, Sika Osei asked: "Who's calling?" It didn't seem as if people were asked to switch their phones off or to silent, and M-Net apparently didn't have any publicists, assistant or producer on hand to take and hold people's phones and handbags off-camera for the minutes during which they do interviews.

Camerawork and sound were both subpar with a lot of sound mistakes. When a few of the people interviewed were asked to "twirl" or turn around, the camera, instead of moving down and up, would stay focused on portrait mode, completely detached from what it was supposed to do/show.

When Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, channel director for Africa Magic channels and M-Net West Africa director, did her red carpet interview, once again as in the past, the presenter didn't seem prepped about what to specifically ask, or as if there was any direction into his earpiece as to what to actually do.

Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, was asked about her clothes and what she's wearing.

With it the pre-show and M-Net once again missed a golden opportunity to actually ask relevant stuff and work in proper promotion like "Can you talk about the MultiChoice Talent Factory?", "What are the new shows that M-Net are excited about?" (Eve!) or "Why is M-Net proud about the AMVCAs?"

There were red carpet production improvements. The pre-show did away with the gay fashionista commentary corner where in previous years the show would flash to so-called style experts to break down the sartorial choices but done in a bad way.

Also gone was the "360" roto-camera trash-attempt that never worked properly previously and attempted to give a "360 degrees" look of outfits.

The last half hour when the most important and other guests arrived was once again disappointingly a missable pre-taped highlights package of the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards cocktail nominee party - basically a these-are-the-sponsors infomercial show, although Africa Magic kept saying it's a "live" broadcast.

The former AMVCA red carpet co-host Eku Edewor awkwardly dartled from sponsor to sponsor, spinning a wheel to win cash at Airtel, taking selfies, and getting a pack of washing powder from Sunlight displaying their cleaning products ... in baskets.

Showing Sunlight soap in baskets, people drinking water from the water sponsor and IK Osakioduwa asking a married woman if she wants another man just before the start of the official awards show made the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards look a bit downmarket trashy.

The third season of Big Brother Naija starting on Sunday 28 January on DStv; will kick off with a special 2-hour show.

M-Net West Africa has announced that the upcoming third season of Big Brother Naija will start on Sunday 28 January 2018 on MultiChoice's satellite pay-TV platform with the 24-hour Big Brother Naija channel that will run on DStv channel 198.

Besides DStv, the Big Brother Naija channel will also be made available as a channel on MultiChoice's digital terrestrial television (DTT) pay-TV platform GOtv in certain African countries like Nigeria on channel 29.

The new upcoming season of Big Brother Naija , produced by Red Pepper Productions and shown on MultiChoice's DStv satellite platform in Nigeria and across Africa, will likely once again also include South Africa - similar to how it was shown across the African continent during the second season.

M-Net West Africa and Red Pepper Productions decided to keep Ebuka Obi-Uchendu as the host of Big Brother Nigeria, with the former housemate who presented the second season in 2017.

Big Brother Naija will kick off with a special 2-hour introduction show on Sunday 28 January, introducing the various housemates.

Big Brother Naija producers held Nigerian auditions in 6 places across the West African country during early December.

Viewers and TV critics will keep close eye on the reality series' latest season that remains controversial for its notorious in-show history of sexual assault against women that M-Net and the previous production company, Endemol Shine Africa, have failed to prevent, despite repeatedly saying during previous iterations that more is being done to protect against sexual violence and assault, only for incidents to happen again.

The previous season in 2017 once again saw the second season of Big Brother Naija marred by an alleged sexual assault against a contestant that once again raised concerns over why M-Net and Endemol Shine Africa wasn't adequately protecting participants, especially women, in the show despite several prior promises to put better measures in place.

M-Net West Africa keeps Ebuka Obi-Uchendu as host of the 3rd season of Big Brother Naija set for 2018.

M-Net West Africa has decided to keep Ebuka Obi-Uchendu as the host of Big Brother Nigeria, with the former housemate who presented the second season in 2017 that is being kept on for the upcoming third season of Big Brother Naija in 2018.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu who was a housemate contestant during the first season of Big Brother Nigeria, has since become the presenter of the youth programme Rubbin' Minds on Channels Television and is the co-presenter of Men's Corner on EbonyLife TV (DStv 165).

The new upcoming season of Big Brother Naija , produced by Red Pepper Productions and no longer Endemol Shine Africa, and shown on MultiChoice's DStv satellite platform in Nigeria and across Africa, will likely once again also include South Africa - similar to how it was shown across the African continent during the second season.

"We are thrilled to have Ebuka return as host of Big Brother Naija," says Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, M-Net West Africa regional director.

"This was the platform that unearthed his potential first as a housemate and then as a host, ultimately launching him to stardom."

"He is a prime example of what the Big Brother platform offers, as he has proven over the years to be one of Nigeria's biggest names in pop culture and entertainment whilst also lending his voice to youth empowerment initiatives."

"Fans and viewers alike are familiar with his cool, debonair and witty, on-air and on stage personality. They are guaranteed to enjoy the excitement that he brings to the Big Brother Naija show".

Big Brother Naija producers held Nigerian auditions in 6 places across the West African country during early December.

The show remains controversial for its notorious in-show history of sexual assault against women that M-Net and Endemol Shine Africa in the past failed to prevent, despite constantly saying it's doing more to protect against sexual violence and assault.

The previous season earlier this year once again saw the second season of Big Brother Naija marred by an alleged sexual assault against a contestant, once again raising concerns over why M-Net and Endemol Shine Africa didnn't adequately protect participants, especially women, in the show despite several prior promises to put better measures in place.

Former Big Brother Nigeria housemate, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, to be the host of second season of M-Net's Big Brother Naija on DStv.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, a former housemate in the first season of Big Brother Nigeria in 2006, will be the host of the new second season of the renamed show Big Brother Naija starting on Sunday 22 January on M-Net channels on DStv and GOtv in Nigeria.

Since his screen time in Big Brother Nigeria, the young lawyer presented several TV shows on public Nigerian television over the past decade, including Friend or Foe, Greatness TV and others, as well as on pay-TV channels like Rubbin' Minds on EbonyLife TV on DStv and is a co-presenter on The Spot and Men's Corner.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu survived a near-fatal car crash in December 2015.

"We are particularly excited to have Ebuka as host of Big Brother Naija," says John Ugbe, the managing director of MultiChoice Nigeria in a statement.

"This was the platform that unearthed his potentials and propelled him to stardom. He has over the years grown to become a prominent face on the Nigerian pop culture and entertainment scene while also lending his voice to youth empowerment initiatives".

Big Brother Naija will run for 78 days with 12 housemates.

With increasing TV censorship in Nigeria where conservative subscribers of MultiChoice's DStv in the West African country have become more vocal the past two years about what they don't want anybody to see, the second season of the show won't have any "shower hour" visuals.
