Jeff Glor named the new permanent anchor of the CBS Evening News in America.

CBS News has named the veteran correspondent and regular and longtime weekday and weekend anchor fill-in Jeff Glor (42) as the next permanent anchor of CBS Evening News.

CBS News president David Rhodes made the announcement.

Jeff Glor has been with CBS News for a decade and will take over from Anthony Mason who was the temporary fill-in after Scott Pelley was abruptly pushed out a few months ago.

"Jeff is a thoughtful, probing journalist with the versatility to anchor in any circumstance - from daily reporting to the most significant events of our time," says David Rhodes in a statement.

"In his more than 10 years at CBS News, Jeff has earned the trust of viewers and his colleagues. He represents the best journalistic values and traditions that will carry the Evening News into a digital future."

"CBS News has an extraordinary history that is meaningful to so many," says Jeff Glor in the statement. "I am beyond grateful to continue to play a role in its future."

The CBS Evening News with Jeff Glor will launch later this year and will continue to be produced by CBS News executive editor and CBS Evening News executive producer Steve Capus.

The end of the CBS Evening News for DStv subscribers on Sky News as CBS News suddenly drops Sky for a new news sharing pact with BBC News.

For South African and African viewers it's abruptly goodbye to the daily CBS Evening News that DStv subscribers have been able to watch on Sky News (DStv 402) for years, with the BBC's news division, BBC News and the news division of America's CBS broadcasting network that have joined forces to share resources.

The BBC News and CBS News deal means an end to the deal Sky News and CBS News had.

One of the casualties for South African and African DStv subscribers is the loss of the daily half hour TV news bulletin CBS Evening News.

African and South African DStv subscribers can also watch the NBC Nightly News on CNBC Africa (DStv 410).

Until now, the only one of America's big three nightly TV news bulletins that couldn't be seen in South Africa was ABC's World News Tonight. Now the CBS Evening News is gone too.

The Sky News electronic programme guide (EPG) on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform still shows the CBS Evening News listed at 03:30, although it's been dropped immediately, with the new BBC News and CBS News deal that has come into effect immediately.

It's not clear if the BBC might add the CBS Evening News to its BBC World News (DStv 400 / StarSat 256) channel, although its unlikely since it didn't show ABC's World News Tonight while it had a news deal with ABC, the one that is being replaced by CBS.

The BBC News and CBS News deal means the two global news operations will share resources, including news gathering and editorial output in New York, London, Washington and around the world. Both would be allowed to access news videos and reports from each other.

In a statement Jonathan Munro, head of news gathering at BBC News, says BBC News "will benefit from CBS News' focus on original journalism, their significant radio and digital operations and their extensive affiliate network which covers every state in the Union."

James Harding, the BBC director of news and current affairs in the statement says "there's never been a more important time for smart, courageous coverage of what's happening in the world".

"This new partnership between the BBC and CBS News is designed to bring our audiences - wherever you live, whatever your point of view - news that is reliable, original and illuminating. Our ambition is to deliver the best in international reporting on television."

CBS Evening News on Sky News changing to CBS Weekend News on weekends with new anchors Reena Ninan and Elaine Quijano from this Saturday.

The CBS Evening News seen in South Africa on Sky News (DStv 402) is being retooled, renamed and changed to CBS Weekend News on Saturdays and Sundays starting this Saturday, 7 May with  correspondent Vladimir Duthiers who will replace longtime Jeff Glor as anchor.

Correspondents Reena Ninan and Elaine Quijano will now anchor CBS Weekend News over weekends.

Around 10 people were fired in the reorganisation but moved elsewhere within CBS. The longtime weekend anchors Jeff Glor and Jim Axelrod will remain with CBS Evening News.

"It would be better for us as a news organisation to come up with what I think is a smarter, 24-hour approach to covering the world, and making sure we've got all the bases covered," says Steve Capus, CBS News executive editor and executive producer.

CBS Weekend News will continue to have original reports but will also contain rebroadcasts of stories from the week.

e.tv and the eNCA has no investigative news show on the air. SABC3 has Special Assignment and M-Net has Carte Blanche.

Debora Patta appeared on television in America and around the world when she did a story on the new hospitalisation of Nelson Mandela for the daily American evening news bulletin on Thursday evening.

Since the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley is also shown on Sky News (DStv 402), the adjacently located 24-hour British news channel next to the eNCA on the DStv channel number line-up, it means that although Debora Patta works for eNews and the eNCA, that she appeared on the direct competitor TV news channel to the eNCA to do a news story.

Debora Patta has been clocking up on face time on international 24-hour TV news channels this year.

Besides now having been on the CBS TV network in America and their daily news show, and being seen on Sky News last night doing the link from Johannesburg, Debora Patta appeared on CNN International (DStv 401) in February.

Then however she was not reporting a story as a correspondent, but appeared on the air as an analyst and opinion-maker for her perspective on the Oscar Pistorius case.

BREAKING. 'Eery', 'shock to many', as Tropika Island of Treasure and Reeva Steenkamp makes the main news in America on NBC Nightly News and CBS Evening News.

Tropika Island of Treasure 5 which started on Saturday night on SABC1 with the now dead Reeva Steenkamp as a contestant made the main television news on America's big daily news bulletins on Saturday night there, the NBC Nightly News and the CBS Evening News.

Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead just two days prior, early on Thursday morning, in the home of the Olympic and paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is facing a charge of premeditated murder.

On Saturday night both the NBC Nightly News (seen in South Africa on CNBC Africa) and CBS Evening News (seen in South Africa on Sky News) featured Tropika Island of Treasure 5 and Reeva Steenkamp prominently in the serious news bulletins.

Both serious news bulletins covered how South Africans are watching Tropika Island of Treasure 5 after the producers decided to go ahead with showing the advertiser-funded production (AFP) featuring the dead model.

NBC Nightly News and the CBS Evening News called it "eery" and "a shock to many" to describe the news as South African viewers watched Reeva Steenkamp in Tropika Island of Treasure 5 on Saturday on SABC1.

The Oscar Pistorius story and Tropika Island of Treasure 5 was the second lead story Saturday night on the NBC Nightly News in America with Michelle Kosinski of NBC News who reported from South Africa and from in front of the police station and jail in Pretoria where Oscar Pistorius is being held.

"A production company decided to air the first segment of a television show his girlfriend starred in and was excited about. This is a first look at model Reeva Steenkamp's first television show" said Michelle Kosinski. "Yet now it seems eery to see and hear someone, now gone, who was only days ago savouring life."

"The way that you go out, not just your journey in life, but the way that you go out and you make your exit is so important. You either made an impact in a negative or a positive way," said Reeva Steenkamp in another of the clips from Tropika Island of Treasure 5 seen on the news broadcast.

"She was our mommy. She was our mom and she was always making sure that everyone was okay," Katlego Molai, a Tropika Island of Treasure contestant, told NBC Nightly News on Saturday evening.

"It has been a shock to many - especially seeing Reeva in life on their television screens," said Michelle Kosinski.

The Oscar Pistorius murder charge and Tropika Island of Treasure 5 was the second main lead story on the CBS Evening News on Saturday night as well.

The CBS Evening News also showed South Africans watching "the reality TV show that aired tonight". "The producers decided to go ahead despite her death. The family agree, even as they plan her private memorial."
