Canal+'s subsidiary StudioCanal is developing "one massive South African story" which it plans to produce in South Africa as a feature film, and envisions doing "many more projects" in the country.
In an interview with the American outlet Deadline, StudioCanal CEO Anna Marsh said that StudioCanal is making plans to develop and produce "many more projects" in South Africa.
Canal+ is busy with an aggressive buyout bid of R35 billion for South Africa's MultiChoice and already co-produced drama series like the Cape Town-set Spinners for Showmax which is getting a second season and which StudioCanal distributed internationally.
According to Anna Marsh, StudioCanal wants to tap into South Africa's local TV and film production industry which will be accelerated when Canal+ takes over MultiChoice.
Anna Marsh said StudioCanal is working on "one massive South African story" as a feature film, the details of which will be announced soon.
StudioCanal recently filmed the revenge thriller Huntington in South Africa, starring Glen Powell, Ed Harris and Margaret Qualley with a local production crew and taking advantage of South Africa's 25% tax rebate for foreign productions filming locally.
Huntington was written and directed by John Patton Ford and filmed in and around Cape Town.
According to StudioCanal, it spent R147 million to produce Huntington, used 305 local crew in South Africa, 45 local cast members and employed 1 876 extras.
