MultiChoice and SuperSport have reportedly abruptly pulled the plug on its sponsorship of the PSL's DStv Premiership more than a year before its sponsorship and funding was supposed to end in September 2025, plunging the PSL into a financial crisis.
MultiChoice and SuperSport signed a multimillion rand 5-year deal in September 2020 with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to take over sponsorship of the DStv Premiership.
MultiChoice stepped in to fund the PSL with hundreds of millions of rand after ABSA bank abruptly terminated its sponsorship after 13 years.
MultiChoice is suddenly facing very difficult financial headwinds, with its awful financial year that ended end of March 2024 which is probably the Randburg-based pay-TV company's first ever, and with MultiChoice that is now technically insolvent.
MultiChoice and SuperSport didn't immediately respond to a media query made on Wednesday seeking confirmation on ending its sponsorship of the DStv Premiership and comment will be added here when received.
SABC Sport reports that Irvin Khoza, PSL chairperson is "in advanced talks" to find a replacement sponsor for the premiership, with the online gambling company Betway apparently the frontrunner.
The 2024/2025 Premier Soccer League season is set to start in August.
