MultiChoice and M-Net's Mzansi Magic TV
channel have decided to scrapped this year's 2023 DStv Mzansi Viewers' Choice
Awards, known as the DMVCAs and might revive the awards show again in 2024.
The 4th DStv Mzansi Viewers' Choice
Awards took place in June last year at the Sun Arena in Tshwane after it was
revived after a 2-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic but the awards show
has once again been scuppered for 2023.
The DStv Mzansi Viewers' Choice Awards
hands out awards across a dozen categories ranging from Song of the Year, Favourite Actress, Favourite Actor, Favourite Radio
Personality, Favourite DJ, Favourite Comedian and Favourite Rising Star to
Favourite Sports Personality, Favourite TV Presenter and several more.
Last year's 4th DStv Mzansi Viewers' Choice Awards made up for the absence of the awards in 2021 by
rewarding achievers in the various categories over the preceding two year
period.
According to insiders,
MultiChoice and Mzansi Magic decided to forego this year's MVCAs due to budget
and to rather allocate money to the media launch in Johannesburg last month of
Bomb Productions' Shaka iLembe drama series.
Shaka iLembe
chronicling the origin story of King Shaka is MultiChoice's most expensive TV
production yet and is intended to run for three seasons with MultiChoice
Studios hoping to translate media and viewer buzz, as well as critical acclaim,
into several overseas licensing deals and foreign sales for the series.
Asked about June's
absence of what would have been the 4th DStv
Mzansi Viewers' Choice Awards, MultiChoice and Mzansi Magic told TVwithThinus in
response that "The DStv Mzansi Viewers' Choice Awards (DMVCAs) is a
significant event to MultiChoice".
"Not only do the awards celebrate our
extraordinary local talent but they also put the fans, who are our customers,
at the centre. We will advise in due course when the next edition of the DMVCAs
will take place."
