America's Recording Academy has indefinitely postponed 2022's 64th Grammy Awards that was set for 21 January, due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 coronavirus in the United States.

South Africa's Trevor Noah was set to be the host for a second time.

"After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual Grammy Awards show," the Recording Academy says in a statement.

"The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority."

"Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on 31 January simply contains too many risks. We look forward to celebrating music's biggest night on a future date, which will be announced soon."

The 64th annual Grammy Awards is produced by Fulwell 73 Productions for the Recording Academy with Ben Winston, Jesse Collins and Raj Kapoor as executive producers and Jeannae Rouzan Clay as co-executive producer.

Hamish Hamilton returns as director with Raj Kapoor serving as showrunner.
