MultiChoice is increasing the prices of movie rentals for its DStv BoxOffice video-on-demand (VOD) service on its satellite pay-TV platform from 1 June.
It marks the first price increase since MultiChoice launched DStv BoxOffice as part of its DStv on Demand offering in July 2011.
From 1 June DStv BoxOffice rental prices will increase from R25 to R27 per new movie. DStv Premium and DStv Extra subscribers will pay R27 for new releases through their PVR and online, while all other non-DStv subscribers will now pay R32.
The rental price of older movies which are available online will remain unchanged at R10.
The price increase of movie rentals will apply to all new titles added to DStv BoxOffice's playlist from after 1 June.
Despite initial technical problems when it launched in July 2011, DStv BoxOffice has proved a success with DStv subscribers who have been able to rent movies at R25 over the past almost three years, putting pressure on cinemas and video shops, and steadily increasing the available number of movie titles for rent with the help of bigger decoders like the DStx Explora.
"It's become one of South Africa's go-to places for convenient access to the newest, hottest movies available to rent - all from the comfort of your couch," says Mark Rayner, the chief operating officer (COO) of MultiChoice South Africa.
"We're committed to bringing you a service that is great value for money and will keep innovating to deliver better experiences".
