Quality new movie channel coming to Africa for the first time - but not (yet) available in South Africa.

The quality movie channel, Sundance Channel, is coming to Africa, but won't be available in South Africa.

The Sundance Channel - formed as a joint venture out of Robert Redford's annual Sundance Festival in the United States - is branching out into Africa for the very first time, but South Africa is not the African country it will be available in first.

The Sundance Channel will become available in North African countries from Wednesday, 15 January on the pay-TV operator's OSN's channel line-up, and in high definition (HD).

The Sundance Channel shows independent and world cinema films, documentaries, shorts, dramatic series and other original programming such as Rectify and the political thriller Secret State - programming from the world of film not generally available on most movie TV channels.

The Sundance Channel which started in the United States, have branched out and is now available in Canada since 2010, is spreading its reach throughout Europe and is now also available in Asia.

"This exciting launch will significantly extend the reach of the Sundance Channel into new territories throughout the Middle East and North Africa for the first time," says Bruce Tuchman, the president of Sundance Channel in a statement.
