ICT INDABA 2012: Minister of communications, Dina Pule, says digital TV migration in South Africa 'is on track'; unveils SANS862:2012.

Dina Pule, South Africa's minister of communications, says the country's long-stalled process of digital migration and switch to digital terrestrial television (DTT) "is on track".

Dina Pule spoke earlier today at the ICT Indaba 2012 currently taking place in Cape Town with hundreds of delegates from across Africa attending this week's conference - the first of its kind in Africa.

Dina Pule officially unveiled South Africa's long-overdue SANS862:2012 standard for set-top boxes (STBs) for digital terrestrial television. The SANS862:2012 will be the new measure for STB manufacturing specifications, and replaces the previous STB specifications for digital terrestrial television, SANS862:2009 which the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) published in July 2009.

"The launch of the standard also helps us to answer the question that many people have been asking about our ability to meet the targets for delivering digital terrestrial television," said Dina Pule. "My answer is that we are on track."

"Through this standard, we are inviting localmanufacturers to be innovative, within this framework, to deliver decoders that willimprove the television experience of our citizens. We have always insisted that we want our products to compete with the best in the world," said Dina Pule.
