BREAKING. SABC2 starting a groundbreaking television inisiative to broadcast university lectures during late night on weekdays.

SABC2 just announced that the channel will start an groundbreaking initiative to broadcast university lectures during a dedicated late night timeslot on weekdays to help students.

Open Varsity will start on Monday, 21 March on SABC2 and run on weeknights, covering diverse tertiary education subjects ranging from the arts to law, commerce, engineering and natural sciences. Open Varsity will provide lectures on physics, financial accounting, commercial law, physiology and constitutional law with SABC2 saying ''student cards and enrolment forms are not necessary. All that's needed is for students to tune into SABC2 every Monday to Thursday''.

The Open Varsity presenters are Vusiwe Ngcobo and Amukelani N’wankoti. Open Varsity will be broadcast on Mondays at 23:45 and from Tuesdays to Thursdays at 23:00. Television students would also be able to download information on academic as well as non-academic issues affecting their lives from http://www.openvarsity.mobi/. The show is produced for the SABC Education division by Tsiko Productions. Open Varsity ''brings the lecture hall to viewers where professors and lecturers with expertise provide lessons without a charge,'' says Fani Matsebane, commissioning editor at SABC Education, who says that Open Varsity will also revise lessons that students struggle with in various courses.

''Open Varsity will educate and supplement university students' specific course content and provide additional study material,'' says Zandile Nkonyeni, SABC2 publicity manager.
