The South African government's confirmation of the European DVB-T2 standard as opposed to the Brazilian ISDB-T, brings to an end a tumultuous year. In 2010 the South African government and the previous minister of communications (who has now been replaced) who were lobbied by Brazil and local business powers with vested interests, created huge uncertainty in the South African television industry when the government appeared to backtrack on its 2006 decision that DVB-T will be used.
The minister of communications Roy Padayachie announced that DVB-T2 will be used as South Africa's digital television standard. He also said that the original deadline for analogue switch-off of 1 November 2011 will be moved to December 2013.
