''For the first time ever it will be independent TV news in Afrikaans which I think is a very good thing,'' Freek Robinson said when he appeared on Kwêla, the weekly magazine show on kykNET (DStv 111) to talk about the nascent eNuus bulletin that will be broadcast on the channel from most probably August.

eNuus will be produced by e.tv's eNews Channel (DStv 403) for kykNET and will go out seven days a week in the 19:00 timeslot daily. Talking to Kwêla host Coenie de Villiers, Freek Robinson said eNuus will provide ''bigger variety for Afrikaans TV viewers. I think that is one of the aspects that's within the media that's very important these days.''

''On DStv there's tens of TV channels providing a choice to viewers, there's new TV competition that entered the market in the form of TopTV and there's digital shifts taking place which means that there will be more TV channels available in the future anyway. So the world is expanding and subsequently I think that the Afrikaans community should be sharing in that benefit and here [eNuus] is the opportunity now,'' he said. Freek Robinson said eNuus will not be direct competition to SABC2's daily Afrikaans news bulletin, Nuus om 7. ''It is so that DStv pulls less viewers simply because you have to pay for it, but you have to keep in mind that in the modern media world its extremely difficult for traditional broadcasters to survive because the digital world is taking over. It costs more, but its a model that works,'' he said about subscription television.

Freek Robinson said the new eNuus team are all busy with training ''because its a new thing of course for all of us. Its a whole new team - that's what's so exciting. From the cameramen through to right in the studio - its new people who have to get to know each other and suss each other out. A final date for when eNuus will start to broadcast is not certain yet, but we hope it will be very soon.''
