The SABC will be setting up what the public broadcaster is calling the SABC Broadcast Centre which will be at the Sandton Convention Centre for the duration fo the 2010 FIFA World Cup and won't be paying any money for the space as has been rumoured.
The SABC decided to set up the SABC Broadcast Centre at the convention centre at not at the SABC's headquarters in Auckland Park because the convention centre is also where Bafana Bafana as well as the FIFA headquarters will be based during June and July. The SABC says the broadcaster ''wants to be at the heart of the action as opposed to being at Nasrec or the SABC headquarters''.
For the space that the SABC will get to set up the SABC Broadcast Centre, the SABC is not paying R25 million as has been rumoured, in fact ''no money has exchanged hands'', says the SABC. ''The SABC will pay for the venue through a trade exchange deal, where the SABC will pay for the venue through unsold advertising inventory worth R13.9 million, with adverts from the company flighting over a 12 month period, once the World Cup is over. The structure of the deal has ensured that there will be no disruption to regular SABC programming.''
