BREAKING. SABC no longer pursuing a separate sport TV channel to broadcast World Cup soccer.

You're reading it here first.

I can exclusively reveal that the SABC is no longer trying to get a separate TV channel to broadcast the matches as well as additional coverage of the Soccer World Cup tournament during June and July.

The South African public broadcaster applied at the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) for a temporary, separate, free-to-air and public TV channel to be broadcast during 2010 and cover the Soccer World Cup.

Now I can reveal that the SABC is NO LONGER pursuing this. The SABC tells me they haven't heard back anything from Icasa on the proposal and have decided to move on and no longer pursue the possibility of a new, temporary sport TV channel. ''We are not pursuing it anymore,'' Kaizer Kgangayo, SABC spokesperson told me. ''We have already finalised our plans using the platforms that are available.''

This means that South African TV viewers - as far as the SABC are concerned - will see most of the matches on SABC1, some on SABC2, with repeats on SABC3 as chosen by viewers.
