BREAKING. MTV Networks Africa ''very excited'' about new-look Nickelodeon channel and commercialization opportunities.

You're reading it here first.

MTV Networks Africa is ''very excited'' about the new-look and rebranded Nickelodeon kids channel in Africa, as well as the channel becoming ''commercialized'', meaning that Nickelodeon (DStv 305) can now sell, insert and broadcast its own TV commercials and advertising campaigns.

I was first to tell about the rebranding and show the new channel logo of Nickelodeon RIGHT HERE last month. Now I can be first to tell you why. I spoke to Alex Okosi, senior vice president and managing director of MTV Networks Africa and asked him specifically about Nickelodeon's logo change and commercialization.

''The Nickelodeon channel is one of the most powerful channels that we have globally,'' says Alex Okosi. ''It performs better than most channels in all our key markets. The refreshed look is something that's in line with the global Nickelodeon strategy. It tested really well with young people and that's the reason why we did it.''

''Nickelodeon shows are rated highest in a lot of markets where various kids TV channels exist. The Nickelodeon content - whether its Spongebob Squarepants or Dora - they all extend and live beyond the TV screen. It's incredible characters that everyone recognize. We're very excited.''
''We're commercializing Nickelodeon because Nickelodeon is a commercial channel for us globally,'' says Alex Okosi. ''We of course did not initially have commercial insertion capability at the beginning for Africa. We've built that in over time but we wanted to launch the channel first, then get commercial insertion capability, and then roll it out to advertisers. Nickelodeon is obviously a fantastic opportunity for our commercial partners to put their commercial messages on - it's a very safe and a fun place for kids and families.''
