After gobbling up M-Net's premium shows MultiChoice's Showmax is taking on SuperSport by live streaming sports content as part of a beta test.

The MultiChoice Group's subscription video-on-demand service (SVOD) Showmax has started live-streaming sports content that until now has only been available on its DStv satellite pay-TV platform and its DStv Now Catch Up service, as part of a trial run.

With the live-streaming of sports, Showmax is now taking on SuperSport directly.

It's similar in the way that which M-Net's content and the exclusivity of its premium offering - especially as the "exclusive home of HBO" and "first on M-Net" - has been diluted by MultiChoice and M-Net through the ongoing shift of making premium American series available on Showmax before it's broadcast on M-Net.

Showmax says it doesn't currently have plans to offer full sports bouquets of sports content but will be testing different content on the service over time.

Showmax is now giving certain subscribers the option to watch sports on its streaming service as part of a Beta test trial run, including live sports broadcasts and pre-recorded sports content, found under the "Sport" horizontal on the navigation bar.

This includes the matches featuring the South African cricket team during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, highlights programmes, SuperSport magazine and discussion shows, the SuperSport Rugby challenge and selected other live professional and amateur events, as well as certain sport-related films and documentaries.
