BREAKING. SABC1 doesn't show the Captain Jack Hackness sex scene in Torchwood: Miracle Day after saying the episode will be shown unedited.

After first stating that tonight's third episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day will be shown "not edited and the channel will transmit as is" the gay sex scene between Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and another man, it ended up not being shown on South African television and was cut out.

SABC1 showing the censored version of Torchwood: Miracle Day after the channel originally said will broadcast an unedited version, is in line with the BBC which also censored this specific episode of the show when it was shown in Britain on the public broadcaster there.

Torchwood: Miracle Day (which SABC1 wrongly credits on-screen as "The Torchwood Miracle") is actually an original drama production of the Starz TV channel in America similar to the Showtime and HBO channels on satellite TV. These channels' content offering features much more explicit violence, nudity, sex and language than public broadcasters.

The closest SABC1 came on Monday night in Torchwood: Miracle Day was showing Captain Jack Harkness in bed after sex with another man and taking a telephone call. The episode on SABC1 carried an on-screen 13V age restriction advisory, whilst the DStv EPG indicated a 16 age restriction in effect for the drama.

SABC1 ready to go gay tonight with the unedited sex version of Torchwood Miracle Day on public television.

Captain Harkess! SABC1 will be going gay tonight at 22:00 with the third episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day which the channel will be showing unedited and unsensored and which contains a racy gay sex scene between Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and a bar man he picks up in a casual sex encounter.

In years of covering television I can't recall public television in South Africa showing or going anywhere as far as this before when it comes to the portrayal of same sex sexual encounters. The BBC edited and made cuts to the episode in question when it was shown on Britain's public broadcaster.

After asking for a week regarding the specific episode, SABC1 finally responded on Friday indicating to me  that the episode of tonight of Torchwood: Miracle Day will not be edited. "Torchwood is not edited and the channel will transmit as is, with a consumer warning ranging from 13 PG V to 16 L," said SABC1.

Torchwood: Miracle Day is actually a science fiction drama from the Starz channel in America, similar to Showtime and HBO. While tonight's sex scene was shown unedited on the satellite TV channel in America since less stringent rules apply, the BBC edited the sex scene when it was shown on public television in Britain.

BREAKING. An omnisexual time travelling space captain from the future is coming to SABC1 which acquired Torchwood.

You're reading it here first.

My guess would be that SABC1 doesn't really have any idea what it bought: I can exclusively reveal that SABC1 has acquired the broadcasting rights to a futuristic space captain with a rampant libido who sexes all kinds of genders and aliens - SABC1 nabbed the show Torchwood with Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman).

How exactly SABC1 will be handling the first season of 13 episodes of Torchwood (a British spin-off drama from the Brits' Doctor Who) that contains risque sex scenes and all kinds of kissing (an omnisexual time travelling space captain needs some relief from time to time) is not clear.

Torchwood centres around the swashbuckling Captain Harkness from the 51st century who runs Torchwood in the present time - a secret British organisation dedicated to fighting alien threats. The show, although great, has dark themes and seems somewhat inappropriate for a channel such as SABC1's audience.

Are SABC1's channel execs aware of the second episode of the first season for instance and the sex monster who seduces her prey and have her men evaporate at their point of orgasm which releases the energy that she feeds on?

Torchwood was already shown on BBC Entertainment (DStv 120).

I can tell that earlier this week SABC1 scheduled Torchwood to start at the beginning of March in the late-night Monday timeslot of 22:00 on the channel - 5 March to be exact.

When I asked SABC1 whether the channel really-eally has Torchwood, I was told that it was just pulled from the schedule and has been postponed to a new starting date on SABC1 of Monday 28 May.

It would be interesting to see if henceforth Torchwood will remain on SABC1 or now suddenly be shipped over to late night on SABC3 where riskier fare such as Californication and Nip/Tuck has been shown.
