TV NEWS ROUND-UP. Today's interesting TV reports and articles to read - 26 February 2021.

Here's the latest news about TV that I read and that you should read too:

Disney is creating massive confusion and big questions for its international partners making use of its content distribution system for shows ... that are and will dry up.

An idea that seemed like a real plus when video streaming was newer, has now become a cliché.

In an era of way, way too much TV, things get lost.

From reboots and spinoffs to streaming services - enough already!

The struggle to speak truth to power in the age of streaming.

Disney remains silent over why Africa remains ostracised from its Disney+ streaming service, touts its 'regional commitment' to the UK and Europe whilst ignoring the A in its EMEA region.

by Thinus Ferreira

You can buy a fast fashion T-shirt for R99.99 adorned with a Baby Yoda print from The Mandalorian on Disney+ from your local Pick n Pay Clothing store - just don't ask or expect Disney to actually answer why you can't get Disney+ in South Africa, or when its video streaming service that remains non-existent might launch in Africa.

The Walt Disney Company on Wednesday chose to continue its self-imposed silence about why Africa remains conspicuously absent from the global rollout plans of its Disney+ and Star video streaming service that is now accessible by consumers in countries across the globe except for the African continent.

Neither The Walt Disney Company, Walt Disney Company Africa, or executives for The Walt Disney Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region have said a word or have felt the need to give any information or explanation as to the absence of Disney+ since its announcement and waves of regionalised launches of its streaming service.

While South African consumers and citizens across Africa have access to the internet, have access to smartphones and apps, and while Disney is aggressively and bizarrely pushing merchandise and branded clothing in Africa for Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian that people can't actually legally watch, Mouse House execs are continuing their stony silence on why the video streamer isn't available in Africa.

On Wednesday Disney execs once again chose to ignore the elephant marked "A" on the map and in the room when Africa wasn't mentioned once in Disney's virtual press event with journalists from the United Kingdom including Europe.

Disney executives - including Jan Koeppen, president of The Walt Disney Company EMEA; Liam Keelan, Disney EMEA's vice president of original productions; and Luke Bradley-Jones, senior vice president of direct-to-consumer and general manager for Disney+ EMEA - on Wednesday held an in-studio done, virtual presentation for the media.

They touted the expanding Disney+ rollout across Europe, the tie-in rollout of Star from 23 February in Europe and further international territories, Disney's slate of Europe Disney+ Originals, as well as plans to announce British Disney+ Originals soon.

And Africa? They just get to wear the Baby Yoda branded T-shirts, Mando.

Jan Koeppen said that Star - as the 6th branded tile within the Disney+ service and essentially the global version of America's Hulu streamer - will make Disney+ even "bigger, bolder and even more exciting" when it gets added to the existing 5 tiles of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic.

This "bigger, bolder and even more exciting" claim is, of course, irrelevant to consumers in South Africa and across the wider African continent who don't even have Disney+ and can't watch The Mandalorian but got the T-shirt.

With the addition of Star to Disney+, Disney is hiking the subscription fee in Europe, and comparable TV markets to South Africa like the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand that all already have access to Disney+.

These countries are getting Star added in from 23 February with Latin America will get Star in June.

Star as the "adult" entertainment section of Disney+ is stacked with self-produced and owned content from Disney Television Studios, Touchstone, ABC and Searchlight Pictures, as well as the rebranded banner brands and their content from 20th Century Studios, 20th Television and FX after Disney bought 21st Century Fox in 2019.

Yesterday Disney announced the slate of its first 10 Disney+ Original commissions from out of Europe. Of course with Disney+ nowhere on the map in Africa, the idea of new productions commissioned out of Africa for the streamer is an even bigger hakuna matata.

Disney is set to announce Disney+ Originals done from the United Kingdom soon.

Liam Keelan said that Disney's European commissions for Disney+ "underscores Disney's regional commitment to outstanding and diverse talent, reflecting our desire to work with the very best storytellers in the industry".

Absent on Wednesday was any utterances from Liam Keelan about any regional commitments in relation to anything to do with Africa where pay-TV subscribers recently lost the Disney XD and FOX Life TV channels.

Besides Disney+, global streaming services still to possibly launch in South Africa are Discovery Inc.'s Discovery+, WarnerMedia's HBO Max, ViacomCBS' Paramount+, NBCUniversal's Peacock and the BBC and ITV's BritBox that will launch within a few months in South Africa.

Already aggressively competing in South Africa are Netflix SA, Amazon Prime Video and MultiChoice's Showmax that are all available through MultiChoice's latest DStv Explora Ultra decoder, as well as Apple TV+.

Disney reveals the new executive leadership structure of its general entertainment division that will now focus on TV content creation with digital streaming and Disney+ as its main priority.

by Thinus Ferreira

The Walt Disney Company is further reorganising its entire TV and video streaming content divisions as it pivots to place its main focus, money, attention and resources behind its subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service Disney+, that might have interesting consequences and impacts for South Africa and the sub-Saharan Africa region in future.

While Disney's internationally distributed linear TV channels remain important to the Mouse House - for instance those seen in South Africa and across the rest of Africa on the services of pay-TV operators like MultiChoice's DStv and China's StarTimes - Disney+ and Disney's video streaming ambitions are now clearly taking top priority.

Interestingly, Disney+ and Star - the two brands of its streaming service - are not available in South Africa or anywhere else in Africa for that matter and The Walt Disney Company and Walt Disney Company Africa have remained silent about a possible launch and roll-out date as Disney+ expands everywhere else in the world.

Now Peter Rice, Disney General Entertainment Content (DGE) chairman, in an internal memo is telling staffers that Disney is moving away from its legacy linear TV channels structure.

"For our team, this means we will wholly focus our resources and efforts on developing, producing and marketing exceptional content to fuel the company’s streaming and linear platforms while our colleagues at Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution (DMED) will distribute and monetise that content and run the linear networks and streaming platforms," writes Peter Rice.

Peter Rice writes that Disney is pivoting into a new structure that is "a big change to our legacy television structure which was built around linear networks".

"Focusing our structure around content engines and centralized support functions will make us more effective, flexible and prolific as we focus on our core strength: making great television. Over the last several months, in the face of unprecedented change and enormous challenges, your collective efforts and tireless commitment to keeping our television business running have been nothing short of exceptional, and I am incredibly proud to work alongside all of you," Peter Rice writes.

"We will undoubtedly face more questions and challenges as we implement these changes, but I am confident that together we will continue to rise to the occasion with resourcefulness and resilience."

The new executive leadership team under Peter Rice is now Ravi Ahuja (president of DGE business operations), James Goldston (ABC News president), John Landgraf (FX president), Gary Knell (National Geographic Partners chairman), Gary Marsh (Disney Branded Television president and chief creative officer) who previously was Disney Channels president, Courteney Monroe (National Geographic Content President) and Dana Walden (Walt Disney Television chairman).

The Walt Disney Company is also consolidating its marketing, publicity and media planning divisions into one division that is headed up by Shannon Ryan, with Jayanta Jenkins joining Disney as head of content marketing for Disney+ and who will also oversee marketing, publicity and media planning for Disney's linear TV channels including Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD and National Geographic.

BREAKING. TopTV loses 3 further TV channels as Turner Broadcasting immediately yanks the Showtime, Silver and Star! channels.

You're reading it here first.

It does not look good for On Digital Media (ODM) and its TopTV platform: TopTV is losing another 3 TV channels within days as Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) is yanking its Showtime, Silver and Star! channels from the struggling South African pay-TV service.

The triple whammy loss of content from its bouquet is the latest barrage of bad news to hit TopTV which has faced a constant uphill struggle with losing channels during the whole of 2012 and even before.

TopTV is not saying why Turner Broadcasting System is immediately removing Showtime (TopTV 111), Silver (TopTV 112) and Star! (TopTV 179) other than that it's happening for "operational reasons" - the vague non-descript reason airlines give to passengers for a litany of problems they do know the reason to, but don't want to be specific about.

With no reason given, it's all but certain that South Africa's TV industry will speculate that the channels are being removed because Turner - which is definitely knowledgeable about TopTV's problems and a company in business rescue since October - no longer has faith in the platform with the resultant implications which arise once a company is placed in business rescue.

TopTV might not be able to pay its debt or money owed to Turner in exchange for getting the channels. Turner might possibly be afraid that it won't be paid and now wants out of carriage agreements to try and cut potential financial losses should TopTV not be able to exit business rescue in the way in which the 1time airline which recently folded and which also entered business rescue, was unable to recover.

TopTV says Turner Broadcasting System (which also runs Boomerang, CNN International, Cartoon Network and TCM on rival MultiChoice's DStv) "recently informed" TopTV that the 3 TV channels will suddenly be discontinued from 31 December.

Showtime was a movie channel. Star! was a general entertainment and entertainment news channel with a strong emphasis on Hollywood and Hollywood news and the only way South African viewers could see the daily entertainment news show Showbiz Tonight (produced by CNN). Silver was South Africa's only real cinema nouveau TV channel with some art house independent movies from a library catalogue of titles from mostly the 80's and 90's.

Turner has been piping all three of these TV channels into South African from Scandinavia through the Scandinavian television broadcaster NonStop Television which is part of the Turner Broadcasting System.

TopTV is now again telling subscribers that the ailing South African pay-TV operator - which is urgently looking for local investment and backers with deep pockets - will once again begin the process of looking to find replacement channels - a process TopTV has had to do several times just this year.

"The supplier of the three affected channels, Showtime, Silver and Star! has taken the decision to terminate the African distribution of its channels for operational reasons, and this decision is thus beyond the control of TopTV," says the Woodmead based pay-TV operator in a statement issued late on Wednesday.

Last month TopTV lost the 1KZN TV channel after the community TV station jumped from TopTV to DStv, quickly followed by Manchester United TV (MUTV) which suddenly disappeared without warning and terminated its contract with TopTV with immediate effect because it no longer wanted to be on the platform.

TopTV lost Hi Nolly and One Music in November 2011 and 2012 started with TopTV losing Current TV in March.

The ongoing loss of channels means that TopTV's product and channel offering to subscribers are not expanding like MultiChoice's DStv offering, since TopTV's newly added channels - which happens after a lag period - only serve to replace channels which had been lost. TopTV added no new big commercial TV channels in either 2011 or 2012.

"TopTV is grateful for the continued support of its loyal subscribers during this period, and would like to reassure them that the company is working hard on a renewed product plan for the New Year," says TopTV about the latest channel loss crisis facing the company.

Ian Woodrow, TopTV's vice president for channels says in the statement that "although this comes at a challenging time in the company's development, with a business rescue process currently underway, TopTV is confident that it will be able to secure alternative channels early in 2013."

"In the interim, and until these replacements are found, we will endeavour to secure additional channels and programming that will be of interest to our subscribers," says Ian Woodrow.

With Discovery Networks International which started the Discovery Science, TLC and Investigation Discovery on TopTV but suddenly made TLC and Investigation Discovery also available on DStv a year ago thereby diluting TopTV's exclusive product value offering (the great Discovery Science is still only available on TopTV only), TopTV has only one remaining strong and unique channel distributor left on its ailing platform: Fox.

Fox International Channels Africa (FIC Africa) supplies the Fox Entertainment, FX and Fox Retro channels to ODM which can only be seen on TopTV.

FIC Africa, through Fox Entertainment and FX has brought and continue to bring South African pay-TV viewers who are subscribed to TopTV great series and exclusive TV properties like The Walking Dead, Hell on Wheels, Falling Skies, Copper as well as other shows very close to the American broadcasting dates.

This excellent programming and international distribution strategy adds big value to TopTV's platform since these remaining unique channels have exclusive content which are rolled out quickly and can only be seen on TopTV in South Africa.

Hollywood Uncensored with Sam Rubin on Star! is renewed for 26 more episodes.

Hollywood Uncensored with Sam Rubin, seen in South Africa on Star! (TopTV 179), has been renewed for another 26 episodes.

Sam Rubin, who can also be seen in Hollywood Dailies on the same channel, assembles an interesting and clever group of celebrities for Hollywood Uncensored - a kind of ''talk show'' panel discussion on Los Angeles' TV and film industry who share their surprising insight on various really interesting topics.

Although Hollywood Uncensored with Sam Rubin is seen daily in South Africa, its actually a weekly show in America.

Topics often range from anything like are stars really concerned about scandals and showing their bad side and how do stars get fired and does anyone feel bad, to whether people are watching reality shows to see who wins or because they want to see the failures.

BREAKING. Star! op TopTV secures the broadcasting rights to the 27th Film Independent Spirit Awards for 27 February.

You're reading it here first.

I can break the news that Star! (TopTV ccc) has secured the broadcasting rights to the 27th Film Independent Spirit Awards which will be shown in South Africa on - co-incidentally - the same day that M-Net (DStv 101) will be showing the 84th Annual Academy Awards: 27 February.

The 27th Film Independent Spirit Awards, an annual ceremony honouring the best of independent films in America, actually takes place a day or so before Hollywood's annual Oscars, but Star! which secured the rights, will be showing it just a few days later, making it the same day for South Africa as the day after the 84th Annual Academy Awards taking place in Hollywood on 26 February.

Star! has the 27th Independent Spirit Awards scheduled for 12:00 (South African time) on 27 February, with a repeat broadcasts on 28 February at 08:00. In America it takes place on 25 February this year, with Seth Rogen as the host.

In keeping with its free-spirited tradition, the Film Independent Spirit Awards takes place each year inside a beachfront tent in Santa Monica, attended by several Hollywood stars.

Programming note: TopTV's Star! channel adds Showbiz Tonight as a new daily, hour long entertainment magazine show.

You're reading it here first.

For the first time ever South African viewers can now watch the daily, hour long entertainment news magazine show Showbiz Tonight after the show has been added as a daily show on Star! (TopTV 179) on TopTV at 17:00. Showbiz Tonight makes for great and a quality new TV magazine show addition to the Star! schedule.

Showbiz Tonight that started in 2005 is a revival of Showbiz Today that South African viewers saw on CNN International until 2001. Showbiz Tonight is anchored by AJ Hammer from New York and Brooke Anderson in Hollywood who've both been with the show since the beginning in 2005.

The South African episode of Showbiz Tonight - the most credible of the American entertainment news magazine shows around - is the exact same day's episode going out in America. In America Showbiz Tonight is broadcast on HLN, a CNN spin-off channel.

Besides interviews with the stars from the world of television, music and movies, Showbiz Tonight covers the biggest (and often controversial) celebrity entertainment stories and breaking entertainment news. Showbiz Tonight will be on for 7 nights a week with a new edition daily, similar to America.

The daily (also hour long) E! News at 03:25 on E! Entertainment (DStv 124) with Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic now has strong competition with Showbiz Tonight that has behind it the full news gathering resources of CNN. Showbiz Tonight calls itself ''TV's most provocative entertainment news show'' and is already planning Oscar as well as Grammy specials for upcoming episodes.

BREAKING. Mix-up of TopTV's Silver! and Star! channels' feed the result of technical problem in Europe, says pay TV operator.

You're reading it here first.

The ''silver star'' broadcasting mistake yesterday whereby Star! (TopTV 179) disappeared for hours to be replaced by a second channel feed of the Silver! (TopTV 112) movie channel is because of a European technical problem, says TopTV.

Angry TopTV subscribers wondered yesterday what was going on (story RIGHT HERE) when first Star! and Silver! switched channel numbers, after which Star! completely disappeared and Silver! could be seen on both channel numbers. Both Star! and Silver! are provided to TopTV by the same company, the Scandinavian television broadcaster NonStop Television that's part of the Turner Broadcasting System.

''The Silver!, Showtime and Star! feeds all go via Estonia to Munich [in Germany],'' says Danny Noble, TopTV's Network Monitoring Room manager. ''It seems that there was a technical issue from the source.''

ALSO READ: TopTV's Star! channel gets a Silver! lining: TopTV's Star! channel turns into a second channel feed for its Silver! movie channel.

Sunday, January 30, 2011

BREAKING. TopTV's Star! channel gets a Silver! lining. TopTV doesn't notice its Star! channel is gone and showing the Silver! channel feed.

You're reading it here first.

TopTV viewers are outraged and angry since the movie channel Silver! (TopTV 112) has now been shown for hours (and still is shown!) on the channel usually reserved for the entertainment news channel Star! (TopTV 179) - without TopTV's final control centre either noticing, or in a position to do anything about it.

Viewers immediately notified me hours ago when suddenly the channel feed of the two channels initially switched, and Star! was available on TopTV's channel 112 and Silver on TopTV's channel 179. Then, after a while, Silver! regained it's normal channel number spot, but became simulcast on Star! as well - which is still the case and has been for the bigger part of the today. Both channels are showing Silver! Viewers have not been told by TopTV what is going on through other media or though an on-air channel scroll.

Both Star! and Silver! are actually provided to TopTV by the same company, the Scandinavian television broadcaster NonStop Television that's part of the Turner Broadcasting System.

UPDATE Monday 31 January 09:00 - Star! is once again being broadcast on TopTV's channel 179, with Silver! on only channel 112.

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Programming note: Miss Universe pageant 2010 broadcast on Star! in August, and possibly on M-Net too.

For the first time South African viewers will possibly have two choices this year to watch the Miss Universe 2010 pageant that will be broadcast on both Star! (TopTV 179) and probably also on M-Net (DStv 101) as well.

Viewers will be able to stare at the beautiful young things from all over the globe with the pageant taking place this year at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on 23 August. South Africa's Nicole Flint (22) will be taking part, along with 82 contestants from all over the world. No Miss Universe 2010 host or presenters have been announced yet.

Star! (TopTV 179) will broadcast Miss Universe 2010 on Tuesday, August 24 at 08:00 with a repeat later during the day at 16:00, Wednesday August 25 at 06:00, Saturday August 28 at 12:00 and Sunday August 29 at 07:00. I have asked M-Net who told me that no contract has been signed yet but that negotiations are underway to secure broadcasting rights to Miss Universe 2010.
