BBC and Netflix to roll out a new Dracula drama series from the makers of Sherlock.
The BBC and Netflix are working together on a new three-episode Dracula miniseries from the makers of Sherlock.
While Dracula will be broadcast on the BBC's BBC One channel in the United Kingdom, Netflix will have the worldwide rights outside of the UK of the Hartswood Films produced show. BBC Studios Distribution is the international distributor.
The new version of Dracula based on Bram Stoker's classic horror tale picked up by Netflix comes after the deal that saw Netflix take the rights to the new British drama series, Bodyguard, that just finished on the BBC and was produced by ITV's World Productions.
Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, who was also an executive producer for several seasons of Doctor Who, are behind the latest take on Dracula, with the two who previously worked together on Sherlock.
Dracula will have three film-length episodes, with the story that will start in Transylvania in 1897, where the vampire count is plotting against Victorian-era London.
"Genius duo Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss turn their attentions to Dracula for unmissable event television on BBC One," says Charlotte Moore, the BBC director of content, in a statement.
In the statement Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss say "There have always been stories about great evil. What's special about Dracula, is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero".
Piers Wenger, the controller of BBC Drama, says "Steven and Mark’s ingenious vision for Dracula is as clever as it is chilling. In their talented hands the fans will experience the power of Bram Stoker's creation as if completely anew. We are thrilled to be collaborating with them and the brilliant team at Hartswood on yet another iconic British series".
Sue Vertue, executive producer at Hartswood Films, says "We are absolutely thrilled to be back at the BBC, and also delighted that Netflix are coming on board with Dracula. There’s nothing like fresh blood".
Larry Tanz, Netflix's vice president of content acquisition, says "We can't wait to bring Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' brilliant storytelling to our members around the world and we are eager to collaborate on yet another series with the BBC".

M-Net has Dracula, with the new drama series reinventing the vampire legend, tentatively set for March 2014 and M-Net Series Showcase.
I can reveal that M-Net has the uber-ooh Dracula - and I can spill that the South African pay-TV broadcaster has tentatively earmarked the fantastic new drama series for the M-Net Series Showcase (DStv 113) channel.
TV with Thinus can also reveal a tentative starting date for Dracula on M-Net Series Showcase of 24 March 2014.
The brand-new (and awesome) American drama series starring the real life sex-drugs-bite-you Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
Dracula is exceptional in the clever cool way in which it plays with the Dracula legend and for the way in which it up-ends nearly every single thing you thought you knew about vampire and the vampire - besides the rules of drinking human blood and of not being able to cope with direct sunlight which remain true to the rules.
What if Dracula was actually a good guy? What if Van Helsing was actually not such a good guy? What if Dracula wanted to help (save) the world? What if an evil and nefarious secret society was destroying the world and Dracula was fighting them and their evil deeds?
What if Dracula was a clever inventor and was really in love with a girl who was killed and who he somehow just found again? This great new drama and must-see television gives viewers just that.
It's set in the Victorian era and the look is simply sumptuous. Dracula comes with a lot of great special effects, cool scary moments, great story, action, costumes and just impressive scale.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers to play Count Dracula in 10 episode, Victorian Era set drama, Dracula.
On the heels of the new pilot episode which the Starz TV channel in America will be filming and which could become a new TV series, Vlad Dracula, comes an announcement from NBC in America today there will be a second TV project about Dracula, simply entitled ... Dracula.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers will play the iconic Count Dracula in the straight-to-series Dracula which will have 10 episodes and which will be shown on NBC in America later this year. He was previously seen in The Tudors which was shown in South Africa on M-Net.
In Dracula, Jonathan Rhys Meyers' character will arrive in Victorian Era London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society.
In reality, he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who've ruined his life centuries earlier - but he falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.
