It's a brand-new record for the South African and Southern African box office, with the phenomenal Spider-Man: Brand New Day that has now become the new all-time highest-grossing film in the territory with a cumulative ticket sales haul of over R125 million.
Sony Pictures and Disney's Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken major records and currently ranks as the third highest-grossing film of all time, worldwide.
While the Tom Holland arachnid-man movie now holds the record as the film that has made the most money in South Africa, ever, in August the webslinger also shot to a new opening weekend record in South Africa and Southern Africa when it made R44 million in ticket sales.
The film has shown incredible legs to turn the R44 opening weekend record into a R125 million bonanza record for the studios and distributor, Filmfinity.
The previous Southern Africa record was held by the live-action remake of The Lion King, which was released in July 2019.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has currently achieved a gross box office (GBO) of over R125 million, surpassing The Lion King live-action film by approximately R4.5 million.
With the film still in theatres, expect this record's final GBO to grow even further over the coming weeks.
Sony tells me "This marks a significant box office milestone for the film and makes it the biggest-grossing film ever in the Southern African market".
"Filmfinity and Sony Pictures extend their sincere gratitude to South African audiences whose incredible support made this historic achievement possible".
"The company also thanks its valued exhibition partners and stakeholders across the country for their collaboration and commitment in delivering an exceptional theatrical experience for moviegoers nationwide."
