FULL WINNERS LIST: 2022's 16th South African Film and Television Awards delivers barely passable clip show with mistakes and a mixed bag of winners, horrific 'red carpet' show.

by Thinus Ferreira

As a 90% clip show that still managed to somehow mix up and play the wrong acceptance speech clips, the National Film and Video Foundation's 2022's 16th South African Film and Television Awards broadcast on Saturday night done by Don't Look Down was a barely passable pasticcio of adults doing repetitive primary school oral presentation reading, followed by a clip, an acceptance speech clip - and a spread of wins for various broadcasters without any standout wins.

The 16th SAFTAs which had its craft awards on YouTube on Friday night, started out with an absolutely horrific "red carpet" half-hour pre-show on YouTube and SABC3.

It had no actual red carpet, bad audio and handheld mic levels as well as unprepared presenters - standing in front of a bad and not even clipped properly, rumpled step-and-repeat banner, asking daft questions, as the cameraman showed the white brick walls of Urban Brew Studios.

It all looked amateurish and school hall, side-entrance bad.

The NFVF and the SAFTAs snubbed and decided it won't give veteran TV news anchor Noxolo Grootboom a Special Achievement Award - in fact, news coverage for 2021 was completely left out and ignored once again although South African TV news contributed many indelible TV contributions over the past year like the July 2021 unrests and that baby filmed by BBC cameraman Thuthuka Zondi in July 2021.

Standing inside Urban Brew Studios, with pre-recorded clips and pre-recorded acceptance speeches, the various presenters rambled off category nominations during the 2-hour "awards show" broadcast on SABC3 and Mzansi Magic (DStv 161), interspersed with musical performances, an In Memoriam segment and an unnecessary and badly-done pre-recorded and perfunctory speech by Nathi Mthethwa, South Africa's inept minister of sport, arts and culture.

Notably, eMedia's eVOD video streaming service won its first-ever SAFTA, for Is'phindiselo.

Notably, shows across MultiChoice's DStv channels won the most awards in total, with Netflix South Africa making a good showing as well, winning several film categories.

The bulk of awards was won by Afrikaans and English shows, being completely over-represented.

The Wife in Zulu on MultiChoice's video streaming service Showmax won a few awards, with a complete absence of content in South Africa's other official languages either nominated or winning anything.

Tali's Baby Diary (Showmax), Glasshouse (Showmax) and DiepCity (Mzansi Magic) were MultiChoice's three biggest winners at the 16th SAFTAs, each winning five awards. M-Net's Afrikaans TV division kykNET won 12 awards.

The South African public broadcaster won 9 awards for its content across its channels.

"All the awards received by our passionate storytellers demonstrate that investing in local content and local content creators is essential," said Yolisa Phahle, MultiChoice Group CEO of general entertainment and connected video, in a statement.

"The breadth, depth and diversity of MultiChoice's content across its various platforms accommodates and caters for Africa in all its diversity. These awards are not solely ours; they are for the local TV and film industry that we continue to unceasingly invest in."

"MultiChoice would like to salute the talent and production teams that delivered quality content despite what has been a challenging few years. These awards are dedicated to you; thank you to the hearts and minds that contribute to our industry's growth and society at large."
