2022's 16th SOUTH AFRICAN FILM & TELEVISION AWARDS: Full 16th SAFTAs nominees list with Netflix SA, Showmax, 1Magic's The River, kykNET's Suidooster and Mzansi Magic's DiepCity leading with most noms.

by Thinus Ferreira

The nominees were announced for 2022's 16th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) on Thursday with streamer Netflix SA - followed by The Wife, Dam and Tali's Baby Diary from MultiChoice's streamer Showmax, as well as 1Magic's The River, kykNET's Suidooster and Mzansi Magic's DiepCity - leading the pack.

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) decided to move the SAFTAs from its usual March-April berth on the country's entertainment calendar to later in the year. It's not known if this is going to be a permanent move.

The 16th SAFTAs, with the theme of "Frame the Future", will be taking place as a 2-day affair on 2 and 3 September this year, with the main awards which will be a simulcast broadcast on Saturday 3 September during prime time on the public broadcaster's SABC3 channel as well as MultiChoice and M-Net's Mzansi Magic channel on DStv.

Some popular South African TV shows and production companies continue to boycott the NFVF's SAFTAs for various reasons, with Ferguson Films' The Queen on Mzansi Magic again nowhere to be seen and Word of Mouth Pictures producing Muvhango on SABC2 again not bothering to enter. e.tv's Durban Gen is also conspicuously absent.

Similar to what's happening overseas with awards show nominations, video streaming services are making ever bigger inroads in SAFTA category nominations with MultiChoice's Showmax and Netflix South Africa once again snagging several nominees, and eMedia Investment's new eVOD streamer making its debut by snagging some nominations.

The feature film leading the 2022 nominations-tally is Netflix South Africa's I Am All Girls from Nthibah Pictures with 11 nominations, while Netflix SA also scored 16 nominations for the second season of the South African filmed drama series, How to Ruin Christmas produced by Burnt Onion Productions.

The Tshedza Pictures-produced telenovela The River on M-Net's 1Magic (DStv 103) channel snagged 11 nominations, with 11 nominations also going to Showmax's Afrikaans drama series Dam, and 11 nominations also going to the Showmax mockumentary Tali's Baby Diary produced by Sketchbook Studios.

DiepCity from Black Brain Pictures on Mzansi Magic, the Afrikaans soap Suidooster from Suidooster Films and Showmax's telenovela The Wife from Stained Glass TV each snagged 10 nominations.

The kykNET Afrikaans mockumentary G.I.L. from Penguin Films got 9 nominations, e.tv's Scandal! (Ochre Media) got 9, e.tv's House of Zwide from The Bomb Shelter got 8, and SABC1's forever-young series Skeem Saam from Peu scored 6 nominations.

"Last year we faced our greatest challenge ever post-Covid; this year we celebrate the connectedness that helped us get through, while actively promoting optimism without our local industry," says Makhosazana Khanyile, NFVF CEO.

"We are looking forward to a remarkable show that will showcase the creative innovation that our local industry has continued to display despite the circumstances that have been faced." Viewers will be able to vote for two categories this year - Best TV presenter and Most popular soap/telenovela.
