The actor Themsie Times, known for her role as Maria in the SABC2 soap 7de Laan has died. She was 72.
A 7de Laan spokesperson confirmed on Friday that Themsie Times had died, with Danie Odendaal Productions that learnt the news from a family member. The cause of her death is not immediately known.
"We are saddened by the news and a statement will be issued collectively with the SABC," 7de Laan said.
"It is with great sadness that 7de Laan learns of the passing of South Africa actress Themsie Times. Themsie warmed her way into the hearts of many South Africans, through her character Maria."
Themsie Times played the role of Maria Zibula, a domestic worker helping Hilda and Oubaas in 7de Laan for 13 years, from 2003 after which the character exited in 2016.
When she was 17 years old, Themsie Times she left Gqeberha and moved to Johannesburg to pursue her dreams of acting.
Besides 7de Laan, Themsie Times appeared in the first season of SABC1's Yizo Yizo as Ma Jordan and in films like Cry, the Beloved Country and Beat the Drum, African Express, 1986's Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold, 1997's Dangerous Grounds, and portrayed a shebeen queen in 2003's Stander. She was also a housekeeper in 1986's Kampus: A Varsity Storie.
In the 2016 film, Eintlik Nogal Baie, she portrayed Liena.
On television, Themsie Times played Beauty in the 1981 TV series Oh, George! and also had a recurring role over two seasons of Isi'thembiso on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) and appeared as a nurse over two seasons of the sitcom Madam & Eve on e.tv.
Themsie Times also appeared in Shadow, was Gogo Nqobile in Isipho on e.tv, made an appearance in SABC1's Generations, and was Eunice in Dead Places.
