Arrow, seen on M-Net, cancelled after a shortened 8th season of 10 episodes.

The drama series Arrow seen on M-Net (DStv 101) with Stephen Amell as the green caped vigilante has been cancelled after a shortened 8th season that will have only 10 episodes.

The series that started in 2012 followed the adventures of th superhero, whose real name is Oliver Queen, after he was shipwrecked and presumed dead, but returned to Starling City five years later and decided to become a crime-fighter.

Arrow gave rise to several other drama series set in the same DC "Arrowverse" shown across M-Net's channels ranging from VUZU to M-Net City on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service across Africa, including The Flash that started as a spinoff, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow that successfully did several cross-over episodes.

A new pilot is being filmed for Batwoman with Ruby Rose as a possible new series.

"This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we've made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind," says executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Beth Schwartz in a statement.

"We're heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come."

"We're excited about crafting a conclusion that honours the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and - more importantly - the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years."

On Twitter Stephen Amell said "Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life… but you can't be a vigilante forever…There's so much to say… for now I just want to say thank you."
