SABC CEO Madoda Mxakwe tells Port Elizabeth staffers 'better programming and diversity' is coming to SABC2 and SABC3 to help increase revenue; new skills audit for staffers to ensure they're in the right jobs.

Madoda Mxakwe, SABC CEO, told staffers at the South African public broadcaster's Eastern Cape regional office in Port Elizabeth that "better programming and diversity" is coming to the SABC's SABC2 and SABC3 channels to help drive an increase in revenue at the beleaguered broadcaster, along with yet another skills audit to ensure that staffers are in the right jobs.

Madoda Mxakwe who addressed SABC staffers in Port Elizabeth on Thursday last week, said part of the SABC's focus is on improving the content offering on SABC2 and SABC3, the two channels from the broadcaster that has seen ratings and audience share erosion.

Last week Nomsa Philiso, the SABC's group executive for television, in parliament said the broadcaster will be "re-energising SABC2's prime time shows and reposition SABC3 for the "premium space"to try and reverse these channels'ratings slide.

Madoda Mxakwe said the SABC has a new turn-around plan to improve the SABC's horrific financial situation and to rebuild public confidence after years of mismanagement and looting, corruption and wasteful expenditure at the South African public broadcaster.

"One of the focus areas is to ensure we build trust and regain the confidence and credibility we have lost," said Madoda Mxakwe.

He said that the SABC over the next few months will yet again be doing skills audits to ensure that SABC staffers are in the right jobs as the broadcaster announced that it's starting a process of possible retrenchments to get the SABC's runaway wage bill of R3.1 billion per year under control.

The SABC's last independent skills audit that was carried out four years ago in 2014 by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) revealed horrors like a finance administrator working at the SABC with just a diploma in beauty therapy

More than 2 200 SABC staffers the SABC had no proof on file that they actually passed matric. SABC employees have also been uncovered to have fraudulent matric and Grade 10 certificates.
