It didn't start on Thursday or during the first hours after the news of the death of Nelson Mandela, but the SABC has now finally rolled out an understated and beautiful, high quality, and hauntingly amazing Nelson Mandela tribute interstitial or promo for the various SABC TV channels.
The short In Memoriam bumper of Nelson Mandela, played in heavy rotation and at random times, can be seen on SABC1, SABC2 (which is currently a simulcast of SABC News), SABC3 as well as the SABC News channel.
The bumper is shown and used in various permutations, with differing durations, and in slightly altered versions. There's also sound differences, with some being instrumental only, and some with singing.
SABC1 broadcast the full version of the "promo" which comes with various quotes of Nelson Mandela and using a black-and-white photo, beautiful understated green, black and gold lettering and singing.
SABC3 carries only the title card right at the end, as well a shorter, and instrumental version of the bumper only.
SABC2 (which for now is) and SABC News also broadcast different versions.
The SABC's appropriate, elegant, well-made on-air Nelson Mandela bumper is by far the best of all the local South African TV channels.
