Sky News switches all its on-screen lower third graphics to the HD version with a single line text block.

Sky News (DStv 402) has switched its on-screen graphics and graphics blocks used in the lower third of the TV screen all to the high definition (HD) version of the 24-hour TV news channel, using it even for its standard definition (SD) channel feed from now on which South African viewers will see.

Sky News is done with the double block of text following a headline even for its SD feed, opting for the wider, and single line graphic its been using for its HD news channel feed.

In addition Sky News is now scrolling and showing the text over a wider screen area of 14:9, instead of 4:3, even on SD, which means that on some TV screens of some DStv viewers in South Africa, some of the text might disappear or appear cut off.

"If you can't see all of the on-screen text when watching Sky News, your television picture settings may be cutting the edges off our widescreen broadcast," says Sky News. "To get around this, you'll need to change your picture settings either on tour TV or on your box."

"If changing the settings on your TV set, try changing the picture format to a letterbox view (which will give you a black space at the top and bottom of your screen but will display the whole picture). Please consult the manual supplied with your TV for further instructions. Alternatively, if your TV supports "smart" view, this will automatically set the correct picture settings for you."
