SABC workers want R55 for meals - part of a demand for a 10% rise across the board which include a R1 500 allowance for housing and R300 for subsistence and travelling.
The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union and the Communication Workers Union says their members have mandated them to "push their demands through, which is unprecedented in the history of the SABC".
The SABC is offering a 7,4% salary increase and the two unions claim the South African public broadcaster's executive managers and management had paid themselves "lucrative bonuses", saying "increases of over 40% to some executives were effected last financial year when the company was bleeding financially".
The SABC just launched its new 24-hour TV news channel, SABC News on MultiChoice's DStv platform for which the satellite pay-TV platform is giving the SABC more than half a billion rand over the next few years.
